Cisco Bandits

Rate this book
Newly trained and ready to rock her first assignment, Gwynn Reznick is about to go undercover for the first time. She will investigate one of the highly private companies who call on Ruben Dordi’s Investigation Group. Ruben is the boss—and he also happens to be Gwynn’s boyfriend.

When Ruben gives Gwynn her assignment—to pose as an accountant for the Prudell Energy Company—Gwynn resists asking exactly what she’s supposed to be investigating. She knows Ruben has his reasons—she’s just not sure why they require her to go two months without even a hint as to why she’s there.

But things change quickly when Gwynn witnesses the death of a Prudell employee. It’s made to look like an accident, but when Gwynn learns that another employee died just before she arrived, it seems like a little too much of a coincidence.

When the CFO tells Gwynn about missing project files and data that just doesn’t add up, Gwynn finds herself suddenly in over her head. Will she be able to maintain her cover, follow Ruben’s orders, and get to the bottom of the mystery? Or will the killers get to Gwynn before she cracks the case?

With a stunning cover, an eye catching title and written by an author whom I have been following from the start I could not wait to get started on this read. I was not disappointed.
The story is less intricate than the previous book. It still keeps you on the edge of your seat. Gwynn is a fast learner and once she hooks up with Holly the story really takes off.
I mentioned this in my previous review of a book this author penned but it needs to be stated again. The fact that this author has gained confidence in her writing skills since her first publication is obvious. In this book you find less diverging story lines. The romance is almost completely underplayed throughout offered instead for character development.
Since it is book two in a series I must say I was a bit hesitant when I found so many new characters. I should not have bothered. This book reads perfectly as a stand alone. The backstory necessary for the reader to be on the same page as followers of the authors book is present but it does not down weigh down this story at all.

The reveal was amazing and logical. Not for this author is the modern tendency to have faith that readers "must" make a leap of faith. No. The reveal followed a believable, logical story line into a believable logical conclusion.

My favourite part of this particular book was the introduction of Holly. She is an amazingly like able character that adds va-va-voom to an already sizzling story.

A suspenseful, well written action thriller

I enjoyed this novel. It’s a thriller alright, a tightly written action caper complete with martial arts stuff, gun-play and nighttime car chases. It’s also a well wrought “whodunit” that will keep you guessing to the end. I don’t like the term ”page turner”, but that is what it is.
The story opens with action; a dramatic, violent murder in progress, so immediately the reader is hooked. It’s a first case for investigator Gwynn Reznick. And her target is her boss, Ruben Dordi’s Investigation Group. But in a nice twist, Ruben also happens to be Gwynn’s boyfriend. How neat is that?.
Cisco Bandits is the second book in the Gwynn Reznick series, The Cost of Crude being the first. I haven’t read The Cost of Crude, but I’m about to correct that discrepancy. I do believe it’s better to read in sequence, but sometimes we miss that trick. And in this case it matters little as Cisco Bandits can be read in isolation on its own merits.
The author writes well and with authority and is well aware of the importance of entertaining her readers. She also reveals an intimate knowledge of her subject, the oil industry. The pace is lively and maintained throughout.
For me, as a man, having a female protagonist is refreshing. And Gwynn is a cool cat who performs her multi-task role as well as any man; truly, a girl for all seasons.
I highly recommend Cisco Bandits and look forward to more stories from Inge-Lise Goss.

Cisco Bandits: A Gwynn Reznick Novel by Inge-Lise Goss

3 Stars

Working undercover as an accountant for the Prudell Energy Company, Gwynn soon finds herself witnessing a murder, and a broken shoe heel almost exposes her, but good training and quick thinking allows her to convince police she saw nothing. She soon learns this is not the first suspicious death to befall a company employee in recent months and the race is on to solve the mystery before she herself becomes a victim.

Gwynn’s assignment isn’t fully clear to her, for some reason her boss and boyfriend Ruben, has decided to keep the details of it from her, which I found odd and dangerous especially as this is her first case as an undercover agent. It takes time and help for her to begin to unravel the dealings going on here but will she succeed in before it’s too late?

This fast paced thriller with a strong female lead has an uncomplicated and easy to follow plot. Though part of a series this story is complete within itself and works as a stand-alone novel. This is my first book by this author and was an exciting introduction to her work.

Cisco Bandits is Book 2 in the Gwynn Reznick series, but it also reads fabulously as a standalone. In this exciting story, Gwynn poses as an uncover accountant in an oil company where employees have been murdered. She’s well trained and clever as she observes, spies, and unearths secrets. I never guessed who was guilty, and that’s the final plus in my book for an enjoyable read. I also liked the fact that Gwynn maintains her romance with Reuben, her boss and boyfriend, without sacrificing her femininity. That alone makes her extra likeable while still being strong.

The previous book in the series, The Cost of Crude, was terrific but Cisco Bandits ratchets the suspense up higher while giving you characters you’ll love and twists and turns you won’t see coming. If you enjoy exciting detective stories with a strong but likeable female leads, you will love Cisco Bandits. Well done, 5 stars!

A suspense thriller to include all the elements of a murder mini-series is contained in Cisco Bandits. Intriguing characters keep the reader engaged throughout the story.

The investigation starts with the murder of Arne Boden. Intertwined with ownership and interest in oil wells, you can imagine the high stakes involved, both legal and illegal.

The author adds treacherous conspiracy to the plot, which of course leads to sex and deception.

If you like whodunit crime novels, I recommend Cisco Bandits by Inge-Lise Goss.

“Cisco Bandits” by Inge-Lise Goss is the 2nd book in the Gwynn Reznick Mystery Thriller Series. This book was a finalist in the Readers’ International Book Awards Mystery/Murder category, and I can see why. It is definitely engaging and really draws you in from the first chapter and keeps your interest clear through the finale. There is plenty of personal drama involved in the mystery as well, since the main character’s boyfriend happens to be the boss of the company hiring her to investigate another company.

In an odd twist, Gwynn takes the job, not even knowing what she really is investigating, although she quickly starts to piece it together when she witnesses the death of someone in the company – a death made to look like an accident, but clearly isn’t if you look beneath the surface and to the recent history of tragedies related to the company. As she delves deeper into the case, naturally Gwynn finds herself caught in the crossfires and risking her own life in pursuit of the truth. Overall, this is definitely a gripping thriller that will keep you guessing.

With a strong female lead, Cisco Bandits: A Gwynn Reznick Novel by Inge-Lise Goss is again a riveting mystery thriller, fast-paced, with well developed characters. With a strong opening scene, Goss hooks the reader into becoming fully engaged in the story. The main character, Gwynn Reznick, has been assigned an undercover task to find out about the inner workings of the Prudell Energy Company. What she is looking for, she doesn't know. However, as she becomes more involved, she soon discovers some discrepancies with the company and it's financial dealings. She also witnesses a murder and knows there is a cover-up. Is there something that Prudell is hiding and why? This book is the second in the series, but could easily stand on it's own as a solid whodunit. Gwynn is a likeable and realistically portrayed character. A little romance is also added to the book and doesn't detract from the overall plot. Highly recommend as a strong contender in the mystery genre.

This is the second book in the Gwynn Reznick series. I loved it!

Gwynn Reznick is a wonderful character. I really liked her when I first met her in The Cost Of Crude. However, I still wanted to shake some sense into her when she took unnecessary risks. I'm surprised that Ruben's temper didn't flare more often at her recklessness. But, saying that, she is quite resourceful and thinks quickly on her feet when in stressful situations.

Having read a couple of other books by this author, I couldn't wait to read this one. I started to read and didn't put it down until I reached the end. The action starts right from the beginning and doesn't let up. There are several surprising twists full of danger and excitement. This is a fast paced roller coaster ride of suspense, mystery and action. I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat during certain scenes. The story is told through mostly Gwynn's point of view, but a few other characters have their view shown too, especially Ruben and Holly.
It was nice meeting some of the members of Ruben's team again. I liked Holly, who certainly got the town talking! However, don't underestimate her, she's extremely deadly to boot! It did disappoint me that Ruben was not as prominent in this story, but I can understand why he wasn't.
I loved the way Gwynn has grown as an investigator, but she still has a lot to learn and I hope to find out what she has learnt in the next installment of the series.

Inge-Lise Goss has written an intriguing thriller full of danger, mystery and suspense. This is the third book I have read by this author, and I find her writing greatly improved compared to her first book. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow of the story was wonderful. I am now looking forward to reading more of her books in the future.

Due to some violence, although not too graphic, I do not recommend this book to younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love thrillers full of mystery, suspense, danger, action, adventure and romance. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I would definitely recommend you read The Cost of Crude first. - Lynn Worton

Gwynn Reznick is working under cover as Gwynn Wagner, accountant for Prudell Energy Company in Bloomfield, New Mexico. She witnesses the murder of Mike Drumlin, a Prudell employee and reports back to her boss, Ruben, who is also her boyfriend, who gives her instructions as to the information he needs her to acquire. Holly, aka Susan, her cousin, also joins the company as a temp while Paul monitors their movements from a distance.

Gwynn and Holly, with Paul's assistance, begin to uncover possible reasons for Drumlin's murder and his fellow employee, Arne Boden, and possibilities of the identities of the Cisco Bandits. Discrepancies between oil and gas production on the Cisco and Lander fields are queried by one of her bosses, Hayes at Prudell so under the pretence of working for him, she delves into filing cabinets while Holly hacks into computer systems.

My only two niggles are about Ruben and Gwynn's relationship and Gwynn's reaction to murder. Without giving anything away, Gwynn is often in danger while obtaining information and though the reader is told that the strict rules and safeguards put in place by Ruben are to protect his employees, I felt there wasn't enough feeling from him for her during these episodes. Again without giving the story away, when Gwynn has to defend herself, I would have liked to see some emotion from her after these events. Yes, they are professionals but I would have liked a little more reaction rather than 'You'd better get some ice on your face.' Just my opinion.

Like Cost of Crude, Goss' understanding of the oil industry allows her to paint a vivid picture of the technical side to this story which is fast paced and exciting. The characters are well conceived and believable and the reader is kept guessing about the identity of 'the man' and Gwynn's client until the end. I really enjoyed this book and if you are looking for an action packed, gun toting, car chasing thriller of a read, I can recommend it.

This is the second time I have read bout Gwynn . If you remember her in book one she meet Ruben while he was investigation her friends death. Now Ruben and Gwynn are dating and he has sent her on her first assignment without any help. Gwynn inserts herself very well into the company of Prudell Energy to uncover the shadiness going on with some employees. Murders are happening and they are not an accident which some believe it to be and with Gwynn's help hopefully she can uncover who is behind it all before it is too late for herself. Gwynn is a good character and of course made mistakes which I enjoyed her doing on her first assignment. It wouldn't have seemed "real" enough if she went through the whole undercover agenda without making any mistakes that she had to clean up. I honestly don't know how she handled not being able to have a long conversation with her fiancee as I know it had to be hard on her especially when one of the people she worked with kept hitting on her.
The author did a great job with the characters and being able to keep them straight especially the bad guys. There is murder, back stabbing, suspense, action all rolled up in this story that is goes together very nicely.
With this being book two in this series it can be a stand-alone as you don't need to have the backstory of who Gwynn is, but I would recommend reading it so you can just know about her and Ruben.
I do wonder if we will get more of Holly in another story as I enjoyed her coming in and helping Gwynn out when she needed via Ruben. Holly isn't a main character but she sure does know her stuff on the computers.
Hoping to read more in this series soon.

At the beginning of the book, Arne Boden, employee of an oil company, Prudell Energy Company, is gruesomely murdered by the Brotherhood. This is quickly followed by another man being shot dead. Gwynn Reznick, newly-trained private investigator posing as accountant Gwynn Wagner to the company, has been assigned to unearth secrets and the guilty. Romantic interest in this second book in the series is provided by Reuben, her boss and boyfriend. In this expertly-paced mystery thriller, Gwynn is the perfect investigator, observing, checking, recording and spying. The plot-line is taut and quickly addictive, and the interplay between setting, characters and investigation is riveting. There is everything you could wish in this gripping tale, with cleverly-controlled tension and suspense, gunshots, chases, blackmail, missing files, and a thrilling climax and resolution, let alone binoculars that not only hide a knife but can also be turned into a gun. But everything is held together by Gwynn, a great character and a great creation: she's feisty, resourceful, and knows how to use guns and defend herself. Superb.

This is an action packed story about a woman who is "undercover" at her new job. When several people are murdered or injured she turns on the investigative skills that keep you turning through the pages to see what happens next. I was quickly pulled into the story line and was saddened when it ended. The characters are very likable, and the author did a great job mixing in the heroes with the villains. I wish we had a little more of a back story, but I think there was a book before this with some of the same characters. The book gives you a definite ending on this story line, but it open and leading into another story. Cant wait to continue the journey with these characters.

Second book in this series, and just a great as the first one.
Lots of fast action, unexpected situations and an end you didn't see coming.
Was a fast read, great to keep your attention and with believable characters.
Gwynn was a very good first-time worker on a special case, with the mistakes you expect from an over-enthousiastic person. Funny parts in there too, nicely combined with the action.
And then a very small love story that doesn't disturb the rest.
Certainly a book I would recommend to persons that like detective stories.

“Cisco Bandits: A Gwynn Reznick Novel” by Inge-Lise Goss is a gripping thriller with a well-chosen heroine. Gwynn thinks fast on her feet and although new to her job as investigator she is resourceful and works her way through the investigation nicely. The plot throws a few surprises, always keeps you on your toes and the suspense is held throughout. Murder, blackmail, deceit and romance are some of the great ingredients in the mix. An excellent start to a promising series with a great heroine. Hugely enjoyable.

Great mystery murder thriller!!

I really enjoyed reading this mystery book. The author does a great job making you feel like your there in the story. I really got lost in it when I was reading it.

I loved that the main character in this book is a women sent to investigate a murder. It's nice to read about a women in a role that a writer typically makes a man.

The book is packed with a lot of action from escaping out of a building through the skylights to a car chase. The book WILL NOT disappoint you.

This is the second of this author's books I have read recently and I enjoyed it just as much as the first. Once again, Goss has provided us with a memorable, strong and accomplished female lead who is both smart, quick and resourceful. Gwynn Reznick is working undercover for an oil company when she witnessed a brutal murder. Quickly realizing she is in over her head, Gwynn relies on her judgement and training to prevail. The writing is suspenseful, dramatic and action-filled. The characters are well described and memorable a Gwynn emerges as a very capable sleuth. I will get another!

Well now, need I say more than my star rating? Perhaps, this. This book amazed me, left me missing sleep, reading by lamplight due to power outidges.
If I say I could not put this down, I mean it, even in my tea times at work, I read on my phone.
So that should tell you all I have to say about this book.
Get it. Read it.

Love the action, love the pace, love the plot.
This is not my usual genre at all, as in at all but it still rocks and I will make a point out of reading more books penned by this author.
This is for anybody who wants to read a book with intrigue without knocking themselves silly trying to follow an over complicated plot.

Loved it.

I did enjoy this book, although not my usual type of read. I'm afraid that I rushed through a lot of the technical stuff (but that's just me). I understand that it was well-researched. And I did feel sorry for Gwynn who has to put up with an absent fiancé for the sake of her work. Many wouldn't have.

I thoroughly enjoyed Cisco Bandits, book 2 in the Gwynn Reznick Mystery Thriller Series. This installment follows Gwynn as she embarks on her first assignment as an investigator, and what a ride it is! The story is fast-paced and packed with suspense, keeping me engaged from the very first chapter. Inge-Lise Goss has a knack for weaving intrigue and danger into a compelling narrative that never lets up.

Gwynn is a strong and relatable protagonist, and I appreciated how her character continues to evolve. Her determination and resourcefulness shine through as she navigates the challenges of going undercover at an energy company. The plot is layered with mystery and action, and I found myself constantly wondering what would happen next.

Natalie D.’s narration is excellent—clear, expressive, and well-paced. She brings the characters to life and adds depth to the tension and excitement of the story. The combination of Goss’s writing and Natalie D.’s performance makes this audiobook a standout in the mystery thriller genre.

If you enjoy stories with smart, capable heroines, corporate intrigue, and plenty of twists and turns, Cisco Bandits is a must-listen. I’m looking forward to continuing the series and seeing where Gwynn’s journey takes her next!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Cisco Bandits is a hard core mystery novel. Here a woman Gwynne single handed solves a mystery that is both bewildering and threatening to her life. Hard core criminals are involved and they would stop at nothing to realize their means. The book shows step by step process the different tactics and technique Gwynne uses to unearth the mystery surrounding the deaths at the oil well company. The best is that she probes through the mystery in a natural manner and while keeping a low profile. However, she still gets boosted and her life is at stake. Yet, the heroine is a fighter and uses all her woman's instinct, charm and resources to keep herself protected and covered while peeling the final layer of the mystery.

The best part for me was that I got to know many instances of the investigation work. The ending and the reason for the problems also came as surprise. The negative feedback would be the length. I was really eager to know the truth behind all the issues and in some places I felt that the book could have been condensed. Also unlike some other mystery novels the book was mostly all work with little play. I would have liked more lighter and humorous moments

Gwynn is a fairly new PI. Her employer has trained her well and she has a newly acquired skill set. She also has partners in the field who work for her boss too. She has a strange relationship with her boss. He's also her boyfriend/lover. But sometimes in their relationship he's the boss and sometimes he's her boyfriend.

Gwynn is quick thinking and talented. Gwynn has been positioned in the office at an oil drilling company. Something is off about production and that's why Gwynn has been placed there. Also, an employee has apparently taken off with no notice, other employees are puzzled, but the reader knows he's dead.

It turns out there is a whole lot going on, as Gwynn discovers. It's dangerous, but she's determined to do her job and uncover the dirty-doers.

I like Gwynn, admire her bravery and skill sets. I am looking forward to reading more of her exploits.

I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator is ok, but while she does a decent job narrating, she mispronounces some common words and that bothered me.

Ms. Goss takes the Gwynn Resnick series five steps higher in Cisco Bandits. It was/is a book that is a thrill a minute, leaving you guessing from the beginning to the last page just who, what, and why so many people were dying (supposedly) by accident.
I adore the characters and Natalie D really brings them to life. Each one is fully formed, and you feel as if you’d love to know some of them, and yes, work for Ruben, except of course that danger is usually best read about.
The twists and turns of the plot keep you reading far into the night. I even had to plug my kindle in to finish listening, as I couldn’t put it down and the book was way to engrossing to stop for the night.
Ms. Goss has a rare talent for pulling the reader into the story and making it so real you feel as if you are there.
Natalie D’s narration is perfect. Gwyn sounded exactly like I expected her to, and it was easy to differentiate the players. Her voice is smooth yet brings the thrilling moments to life. A wonderful addition to my audio library.

Inge-Lise Goss keeps us in suspense over who “the man” is that is controlling the Cisco Bandits. The five men who made up the Brotherhood are slowly dying off as issues arise over the oil deeds they control. Ruben was hired to find out who murdered the first Prudell Energy Company employee. He sent in his rookie, which happened to be his girlfriend, to dig up a little information. Gwynn snoops further that she was suppose to and find her with back up and an irritated boyfriend.

I found Cisco Bandits very enticing as Inge-Lise Goss focuses on different key characters within the Prudell Energy Company that could be the ring leader of the group. The action became more intense as the novel came to a head. I enjoyed Gwynn’s sweet spirit; though at times her drive to get more information clouded her common sense. It must have been difficult for Ruben and Gwynn to work together and keep their relationship in check.

Gwynn Reznick is one of those characters you can’t help but fall in love with. She is now assigned to her first case and, obviously, it couldn’t be a simple one. She finds herself immersed in a murder mystery and, against the advice of her boss, she goes snooping around and finds herself has the next on a hit list.
The plotline is well thought and well executed. It’s solid without compromising the good pace of it and offering some very interesting backstories. The characters are interesting and multi-layered. For me, the strength of the book really lies on the great dialogues. They are believable and give important information about the story but also insight on why the characters behave the way they do.
Although it’s the second book from the series, this could be a mystery standalone book. Great for everyone who enjoys reading about murders and conspiracies.

I'm not at all interested in the oil industry. But this story was amazing! Full of action. Full of sub plots. Cleverly written. Lots of characters. A real murder-mystery. I had no idea who the bad guys were. Wonderful, clever, sharp, beautiful, brave Gwynn. Working to solve her first case. Her absentee boss/boyfriend ruled the job from the phone and monitors.

I listened to an Audible version of this book gifted to me from Story Origin. The narrator had her work cut out for her. There were so many characters. She had several different voices, but not enough for everyone. Still she brought alot to the feel of this story. Very easy to listen to and understand.
Because of the numerous characters, and some of them had alias'; I wondered if I wouldn't have been just as happy to be reading and have visual names.

Another page turner..

I really need another fix!! Gwynn, Holly and Ruben are quite an addictive characters!!

The second book in a series it's really better if you read the other first to understand Gwynn's background and where it all starts.

As per her other novels Inge-Lise keeps the pace steady throughout; no drifting off from the storyline as it unfolds, no unnecessary padding yet it maintains description of people and places so you can visualise the action.

No more as I don't want to give anything away accidentally!! I hate reviews that are full of spoilers!!

I hope that this series will continue... Soon!!

A fast, fun read!

Sometimes you just want a book that you can read without thinking. A book where you just slide into the storyline, put on the cruise control and enjoy the ride. This is one of those books.
I read a lot of history and non-fiction. This book falls way outside both those genre, which makes for a good change-up; kind of like clearing your palate.
If you are looking for an easy read with a pretty good pace that takes place in the New Mexico oil patch, try this book. You'll probably like it.
