Fantastic. Phenomenal. Jam packed with adventure, zombies, military action, emotion, love (not the romantic kind), suspense, mystery, the right amount of science fiction, wide array of interesting and balanced characters and relationships - overall it has become one of my top favorite series. And not just because I love it intellectually like I usually do with other series or books, or because of the excitement it offers. Although those experiences are there. I love it because it captured my heart. Now, don’t shy away because I said that. This is no mushy-gushy tale BY FAR. It’s the realistic manner in which the bond between the twin brothers is spun, as well as all the other relationships in the story. It comes across as completely authentic. Therefore, translating to quite meaningful. I think reading the six books as a set engenders this as well. There are no stop gaps. I’m a huge reader, most especially in the military zombie apocalypse genre. Generally 3-5 books per week, and the blood, sweat, and tears apocalyptic struggle is alive in this story. From start to finish I had to cheer on the main characters as they experienced trail after more difficult trial. The military presence was right in the forefront; a defining aspect of book. And the zombies. Nothing too exceptionally unique here. Except how they .... well, I’ll let you find out. ;) It’s interesting. Character development is masterful. Scene setting, also masterfully crafted. As the characters you come to know so well move through their days and nights, you are right there with them. Feeling the dry air, the maddening thirst, hearing the gravel underfoot, seeing the ship so clearly out off your beach, out on the ocean, smelling the salty air - or the rotting corpses, feeling your anxiety rise and your own adrenaline pop up a bit as a favorite character is being hunted....and a hunter is so, so close as you hide just below him in a rock nook. And more. It’s superbly created! And wildly fun to experience. There are a few editing errors that do stand out, but are easily forgiven as the entirety of the story is so great. Such as a Major being referred to as a Captain a month later. *shrug* Forgivable. Overall, this is not a series to be missed. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into it. Still wasn’t sure a month in (it’s in a journal format - wasn’t sure about that either). But by the 15 day mark, or maybe even before, I’m not looking back, sorry, I was DEFINITELY not leaving Aaron and Matt’s side for anything. I was INVESTED. Then the story just kept getting better and better. Richer, and deeper. The journal format, which I usually dislike, was the ideal way to tell this story. It was perfect. I can’t believe I just said something about ANY book that was “perfect” - but it’s true. Thus, with that, I’ll just say —- don’t miss out on this one.
This epic story is well written, great character development, and has the action, pathos, emotional tensions, and at times it gives the reader a sense of dread, anticipation and emotions welling up from within. Definitely a MUST READ ! This author has TALENT & SKILL and I look forward to reading more stories.
The only criticism I provide here is that one must regard editing just as important in knowing how to write the story. The editing or lack thereof in this book served only distract the reader and break the momentum of the story. I chose not too as the overall story etc still carried the book fabulously and well into the 5 star zone.
This goes beyond some misspelled words that should have been easy enough to auto correct. A few Sentences missed a word or two that altered the meaning etc. Normally I would have deducted some stars however it was the overall story & talent that kept it at 5 stars. The author, if reading this, needs to remind themselves that editing or lack thereof could cause the reader to put down the authors book and find someone’s book to read.
In this day of walking dead wannabe clones, the story of Matt and Aaron King stands out as more human than most. Ironically, the genre hopping twists and turns don’t derail that basic humanity, even as the story reaches further and further away from typical post apocalyptic fiction, into places that I’ve never seen it taken before. Without having to dwell on the heart of darkness of the human soul, when faced with desperate times, the author manages to convey the gravity of the situations, without resorting to gratuitous descriptions. I’m not a teen by any stretch, but this could be read by young adults and adults alike without the need for censorship. We can get the point, without it being ruthlessly jabbed into our brains. A story well told and worth the read.
Downloaded this series of books by mistake.....I’m not a massive fan of zombie apocalypses, but I’m glad I did. It’s one of those books where you just have to know what’s going to happen next. I’m a tad disappointed there isn’t a follow up as I would have liked to know what happened with......nope can’t say anything further as it would be a serious spoiler if you haven’t yet these books. Even if, like me, this isn’t your cup of tea, give it a try, you might be surprised.
I thought I'd read parts of this before and the author confined that. I thought it good then, but the changes were a vast improvement as is the coming of age of the author 's viewpoint. It is well worth the read even if you don't like zombies, and I don't.
I’m glad I read this whole series, even though it took awhile to get through it..It’s really complex, yet so intense you don’t want to stop reading. I’m not a huge fan of zombies, but the author made this series interesting by throwing in a reason the dead became zombies that was scary fascinating.
What a ride! Honestly I am not a series fan. For one it feels to much like a money grab (just me), lure them in and keep them paying and 2nd I often find I get bored as it seems to get repetitious. This series was a winner in every way. With well developed characters Matt and Aaron we start a journey through a post apocalyptic Australia where zombies are really one of their least concerns. Carrow weaves a story with highs and lows, with characters you'll grow to hate and some you'll grow to love. The action is plentiful and exciting but the relationships that form are the glue that holds it together. There are plenty of surprises in the series to keep a reader interested and on top of that it is really well written. I really enjoyed this series and am glad I picked it up I highly recommend it to zombie and post apocalyptic fans. I will definitely be looking at other books by Shane Carrow.
The story was very good with relatable characters. I spent a few late nights engrossed in these books. My biggest complaint is not with the author but with whoever edited these books. I'm not usually such a stickler for misspelled words that I had to look up to make sure weren't part of the native language. There were also several discrepancies that threw off the flow of the story and caused just enough disruption to make them noticeable. I wish they could be re-edited and re-released. Aside from those minor things, I thoroughly enjoyed reading these books and even shed some tears over some of the characters. I've read several zombie/post apocalypse type books and this is one of my favorite series. I wish there would be another book or two since I wasn't quite ready to let these guys go.
Got this set box because I found another book that I enjoyed by the same author (Vampire on the orient express). The box set is six books, the first two are quite good, lots of zombies like an apocalyptic zombie book should be. But trouble begins at book three, suddenly there’s an alien race behind the zombie outbreak, then there’s a intergalactic war between an alliance and the “bad” ones that we discover are machines gone bad. Add a military religious leader, a totalitarian state, telepaths, political treachery, a battle ID4 style and there you have it. Tough to bear. One of the books become to repetitive (the main character it’s captured and escape, only to be recaptured and escape again). Don’t get me wrong, ain’t that bad, but it could be a shorter story or just mix fewer ingredients, or stick to the zombie line.

I've never read something this long. Typically, I get bored part way through. But, this series kept me turning the page.
I'm also not a huge fan on zombie-fiction. The premise of reanimation being powered by alien tech I teigued me. And that there were good and bad guys that were human as well as alien.
If I'm being honest, I skimmed through a lot of the description of Matt's seemingly endless journey to find the code book. I was like, enough already! Having said that, I love that Shane Carrow had the guts to end Matt the way he did. It made sense.
Lastly, I don't usually write long reviews but this series was worth it.

This was a very good serial. Zombies caused not by a virus but something else. Can't tell you it's a secret. Aaron & Matt, twins, look a like, dreams they're both having about future events, when some come true they are flabbergasted and the cherry on top they feel each other's pain. Oh, and they are young 17. Most people think they're joking. End up with SAS soldiers, British "seals". They can do anything. In fact a few times you think, no that can't be right. We have torture, violent torture, alie.... just can't say it, death, eaten alive, bad folks that invent their own cities with walls, guaranteed protection. It is a rollicking good time had by all, NOT.
I’ve read a LOT of zombie fiction, often it’s not that great but I enjoy the ‘imagine if I were in this situation’ feeling of them. This zombie fiction however was highly enjoyable though because after the usual start of the apocalypse storyline it took a completely different turn & brought in my other favourite type of stories science-fiction plus a bit of magic/fantasy with the telepathy side of things. I did find the beginning slightly less engaging but enjoyable nevertheless but as characters were developed the books got harder & harder to put down.
I am pretty much done with zombie books. I thought this was not one of those. It was. But a zombie book with a major twist. This one was different. It's a good thing considering this book was well over 1,700 pages long. The character's were engaging and action could be found in s good portion of the book. Actually, the entire book. The ending, however, left me a bit empty as if it was missing three more books after this. There was a lot more story left to tell. Maybe, one day.
This book was heading for 5 stars, even though it did need more editing, when July arrived.
The book is written as a journal, with one of two of the identical twins brothers writing in it, depending who has physical custody of the journal.
Great zombie story, great characters, great story! And then in July the "government" got involved, and of course the "religious zealot" and from then on it was written more like a bad military procedure, slow moving, constant infighting, spies, etc, and of course constant indecision.
This resulted in a sudden lag in the story, and instead of continuing as a great book, turned it into a mediocre long, drawn out series. It should have been 4 books, not 6 and it would have been wonderful.
Great to read a TEOTWAWKI series that wasn't all mach0-alpha-Americans. Loved the main characters and the setting. Loved the way it was written (as a journal)
I wish there had been chapters/divisions between each part though. It made reading hard - I like to move back and forth in a book and revisit earlier sections. And yes, highlights and bookmarks can do that, but I like a decent table of contents.
Fast moving, keeps your interest, great characters. Zombie apocalypse with a twist one doesn't see coming. Some laughter and some genuine tears, (I cried like a baby!) Entertaining until the very end. Thanks to the author for a couple of sleepless nights and a couple of days of complete distraction..
Recommended to all zombie apocalypse fans, sci-fi fans, and anyone who likes to immerse themselves in a world. Dive in and start swimming!
If there was a higher rateing, End Times, the complete set would have that rateing.
Of all the books of this nature, that I have read, and thereare many, this is number1. It has everything it takes to draw you in and keep you wanting more. Its fiction, but the people feel so real, you are one of them. You are a part of their story. You live through the horror, tears, and joys, as if you were there.
I must be really honest, I did not finish these books. They were good to start with but then it quickly became a bit too much of the same. Everyone gets in to a nice place n then something happens n someone gets caught then they get out of that n someone else dies or gets caught n so on n so on. I understand the whole zombie apocalypse thing (I loved the tv series The Walking Dead) but these books (there are 6, I only made it to book 2 before giving in. Sorry.
Came across these books after reading a pretty average set of apocalypse novels, thought I'd give these a go in so glad I did! Loved following Matt and Aarons stories, nice way of writing and I enjoyed the unusual aspects as to why the zombies turned up. Brilliant series.
I just finished all six books. I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. After six books, the characters are a almost my friends. Thanks for the ride, Shane!

I loved this series I couldn't wait to read the next page while at the same time I never wanted the story to end.
I love to read and always have. These books top my charts.
Thank you for writing them with an imagination I admire. Sad I'm done but thrilled to have read these. I will be looking for more from this amazing author. :)
Not my normal type of book but I found myself reading until the wee hours to find out what happened at the end. The author did an excellent job fleshing out the characters and I found myself rooting for them and many times biting back tears. There were undoubtedly parts in the book which dragged and could have been shortened but overall I would recommend this book.
I was sad to see the series end but it was so good! I read the entire box set in just a couple weeks and there were many nights I couldn’t put it down. This series was impressively well written and the characters were very well developed. I’m looking forward to see what else Shane Carrow has written!
If you're looking for a story with lots of meat on the bone this is a great read. It was actually quite emotional at times, good world building just very long. Took me a week to read the whole series which some people will really appreciate.
Best books I have read in a very long time. It was so nice to read such a great story and have familiar Australian places/brands etc. I read the lot in a week, I could not put them down. Thanks for reigniting my passion for reading!
Excellently told tale of alien invasion, zombies and complicated survival .
Excellently written and complex characters who are so real, you miss them when you are not reading about them. Very realistic events and reactions to them in an ongoing epic tale. So sorry the story ended!
Definitely a cut above the usual fare one finds in the cheaper ebooks. The characters of the twins, pretty much all the characters are very well done. There's a depth and a realism there, despite the scifi theme.
