Mates for Monsters #3

A Mermaid's Heart

Rate this book

Sentinel, virgin, mermaid.

Meet Ebby, the siren who won't use her voice.

After watching her father wither under the mate bond, Ebby will do whatever it takes to help others avoid the same fate. She must remain chaste because giving in to her desire will turn her into a violent, sex-obsessed creature. But when she interrupts a coven of mermaids seducing a human male, her mission to protect him leads to the need to protect something else - her heart.

A captive human.

On a lone swim, Cruz encounters a mythical world that isn't supposed to exist, full of savage sirens and underwater magic. All seems lost until an apricot-tailed beauty arrives, one who stirs an unbidden fire in his veins and a strange sense of home in his soul. The other mermaids’ aggression toward her awakens an urge to protect her, even if he drowns in the process.

An innocent kiss to renew Cruz's breath-spell has Ebby teetering on the brink of ecstasy, drawing her to the one thing she's avoided all her life - a mate. Cruz is strong, clever, and immune to the mermaids' song. Yet no human can be strong enough; the other mermaids are relentless, and he'll only be safe on land.

Destiny has given her a mate. But will love make her send him away?

AN ORIGINAL MERMAID STORY THAT FOR ONCE ISN'T SOME FUCKED UP, CRAPPY SHIT. THIS WAS BEAUTIFUL AND I LOVED EVERY ODD SECOND OF IT!

EBBY is our curious and brave virgin mermaid who vows never to become like her Father who is a slave to his mate bond with her Mother who didn't want to be with him. Welcome to adulthood, children! Love and lust are two matters that fuck up relationships all the time. Anyways, baby merchildren are genderless till puberty, so Ebby chose to be a female because DUH, the female holds more power and won't have to suffer the mate bond. Ebby's also not like the other vicious mermaids in the waters who openly play, fuck and then kill the humans they capture. When the mermaids caught CRUZ, Ebby is inevitably drawn to him and protects him as much as she can, taking care of him and befriending him when he was locked away by an evil mermaid, guarded by an octopus. Yes, you guessed it, just like Ursula from the little mermaid. I liked Ebby. She may be quiet and appears timid, but she's got a lion heart when the situation calls for it.

CRUZ is at a party with his friends when he decided to go for a swim in the ocean and ended up as mermaid bait instead. I gotta say, the fuckfest in the water was freakin' hot. And, Cruz got raped. LOL. Several times by the mermaids. Not that he was complaining. But, he soon realizes that this mermaid orgy isn't a dream, and his life might just forfeit at the whims of these vicious creatures. All except one, an apricot tailed mermaid who tries to protect him and save his life.

OVERALL I loved the interactions between Ebby and Cruz because there was a sense of unpredictability to it that made everything much more intriguing. Their attraction while there only intensifies when trust and friendship builds between the two. I hope to read more from this series, fo sho!

This is NOT The Little Mermaid and thank goodness for that!!

First off, readers really should go out and read The Merman's Kiss and The Merman's Quest before picking up this book. Don't get me wrong, you CAN read it alone, but trust me, you won't enjoy it nearly as much if you don't understand Ebby's family history (the first is her uncle's book, the second her dad's).

Also good to note, this is not a Disney story, so if you're looking for everything to be sparkly, your going to be disappointed. This is an adult novella, not meant for under 17 if I were placing it. That being said, I'm not a fan of young adult novels because they're too childish, so it's really quite a positive note.

On to the review! I was so excited when I heard Mrs. Ley was writing Ebby's story I can't even describe it. I loved both her father and uncle and was thrilled to get to see this family all get their HEAs. Mrs. Ley sticks more to the older mermaid mythos with her stories, so mermaids tend to be bloodthirsty. Mermen on the other hand, are the nurturers. They are also capable of choosing their own gender when they hit puberty. That being said, Ebby picked female back in Merman's Quest and broke her father's heart, though it's very hard to blame her for it since the females of her species are the powerful ones and she was only trying to protect herself.

We open up this story with Ebby as an adult mermaid a few years past her choice, having lost her family a while back, but holding onto the teachings of her father and choosing to be a better 'person' than her species expects. This is a decision that is causing Ebby no small amount of heartache as her 'sister' mermaids torment her endlessly for her kindness. When she finds a school of mermaids engaging in 'fun' with a human male they've absconded with, she makes it her mission to save his life. From there our story emerges. I won't give too many spoilers here (because where's the fun in that?), but there's lots of action, romance, soul searching, psychological growth, and even some absolutely heart bursting reunions. Also, there is a very tiny superhero named Kato. He's awesome.

I received an arc copy, but I also bought the book as soon as it released. That should speak for itself.

Synopsis:

‘A newly-made mermaid wants to protect a human male from her deadly siren sisters, but her own carnal desires may spell disaster for them both… When Ebby discovers a coven of mermaids torturing a handsome human, she's determined to set him free. But one small kiss to renew his breath-spell has her teetering on the brink of ecstasy, drawing her to the one thing she's avoided all her life—a mate. Mermaids don't bond for life, but Ebby can't deny the irresistible hold Cruz has on her. He's strong, clever, and immune to the other mermaids' song. For the first time in her life, she dreams of a home and family. Yet the other mermaids are relentless, and swear if they can't have him, then no one will. Together, Ebby and Cruz must overcome deadly odds to survive. And happily-ever-after? That may require more than either of them has to give.’

“Sighing, Cruz looked out over the glittering water, imagining the sound of the waves against the hull and the cry of gulls in the distance. Deaf since the age of seven, he vaguely remembered the sounds from TV shows he’d seen. He’d also learned that his voice tended to come off as less than charming, and as a rule remained silent.”

This book was sooo good!! I loved it probably more than the first two.

“Two years ago, she’d chosen to be female. Not out of any biological urge, but because mermaids were obviously the stronger sex.”

4/5 Stars!

I see you Ebby!

If only all Mermaids remembered childhood abandonment like Ebby. I actually didn't want this to end and want to know more about her and her father's relationship with Madison. And Ebby's relationship with her father as well.

In the underwater world, mermaids are fierce, strong, heartless, and cruel, and love to have sex with anyone they can ensnare. When mermen fall in love, they can only have one partner, and they will whither away whenever their mate leaves. Mer-children are born sexless and can choose whichever sex they want to be upon puberty. After seeing her father waste away and disappear into the Deep after her fickle mother left him, Ebby decided to be female and strong. But when she sees human Cruz ensnared in a mermaid sex orgy, and the most malicious mermaid among the lot decides to keep him as her plaything, Ebby knows she has to do something to rescue him. She realizes she might have a heart after all.

This is set after both The Merman’s Kiss and The Merman’s Quest, and brings in the characters from both of those stories (including the heroine herself who was a child in The Merman’s Kiss). While this doesn’t really hinge on having read both of those stories first, it does help fill in some of the missing gaps of knowledge. I loved the idea that Cruz was deaf and had to use sign language, and so couldn’t hear the mermaid’s hypnotic siren song, giving him an advantage in the water. I liked the idea that mermaids were these strong, fierce, malicious creatures (totally reinventing the idea of what a mermaid is), and I did like seeing that in The Merman’s Kiss, but I really didn’t go for the story opening on an orgy scene where the guy pretty much gets raped by a group of mermaids. It set an ugly tone for the rest of the story (along with the idea that the octopus would be allowed to eat the guy once the evil mermaid was done toying with him), as opposed to The Merman’s Kiss that had a wonder of the ocean world being brought to life around it (this story really didn't touch on the setting at all, mainly just the characters) and a beautiful romance. The romance in this story was sweet and I did like that Ebby was trying to convince herself that she could be kind and caring, rather than follow the example of all the other mermaids around her. Cruz felt a bit absent at times in the book as just a damsel to be rescued. Personally, I liked The Merman’s Kiss better, but it was nice to revisit the characters and bring their stories to a satisfying conclusion.

This was a 3.75 star for me. It's continues on with the world that the author has built in the last two books. So you definitely want to have read those before this one. The major difference is this time instead of the POV being a merman and a human women, it's a mermaid and a human man. I liked getting to read from the viewpoint of a mermaid after the other books. It made the world a little bit richer.

Four stars because the couple was adorable, both their own intern struggles and growth as people and a couple were really great to read. The story was better written/planned and just as cute and sweet as the first but also less fluffy and with more happening.

This is Ebby's story, she has chosen to be a mermaid much to her Father's upset, but she did not want to be a merman and be at the back and call of a matebond and grow lovesick. She is determined to be different from the wanton and spiteful mermaids, trying to rescue any human males that are dallied with, but often it is a fruitless exercise so she keeps her distance until Cruz. He's on a party boat, but grows bored and decided to go snorkelling,he's deaf,so doesn't respond to the siren's song and is soon sucked into an underwater prison as a plaything, until Ebby mounts a rescue.

This was an entertaining read. It was lovely to see the little merchild from book one blossom, the determination and reasoning still very much her mantel and not falling into a shallow and selfish siren.

I liked the reunion at the end, it tied everything up - maybe a tad overly sweet, but I was content.

2 years ago Emmy chose her fate to become a mermaid. Her reasoning was to make sure she didn't wind up like her Da . Mermen are bonded to the first female they have sex with but it only leads to misery n heartache as the women lure innocent humans to seduce n toy with. Emmy watches from a distance as human males are used, abused & abandoned during the mating frenzy. Sweeping in afterwards to toe them back to the shore. Unfortunately, those she try to help, who weren't already dead expired from their wounds before reaching land. But that never stopped her from trying. She is unique for her kind in that she's a virgin.
Cruz was snorkeling for crustaceans when he finds himself encircled by three females. Only to his horror, does it become clear that they r in fact honest to god mermaids. When they tire of him, Emmy is thrust by the others to partake in the pleasures.
Turns out that Emmy n Cruz r kindred souls. Each with their own secrets. Emmy finds that the slightest touch from Cruz ignites the fire in her while Cruz recognizes with the first kiss that she's a virgin. Alpha tendencies to protect kick in as he tries to shield her from the others.
Emmy still wants to help him return to land. The problem is how was she going to carry him to the surface, once freed, if she couldn't even be near him without losing her mind?

Ebby who we meant in book one and some in book two is now all grown up and Ebby chose to be a female. After watching her dad go through depression she knew she didn’t want a life as male, she she is a female who does not use her siren song. She tries to free and help the men that the other mermaids capture. Cruz is swimming when a group of mermaids surround him, at first he thought it was a dream until he tried to leave and they drew blood. Cruz just let them do what they wanted until they tried to force Ebby to give up her virginity. Ebby is determined to free Cruz. Cruz does not fall prey to the mermaid song, since he is def, and Ebby calls him lucky, I like how the author made this story inclusive. The author does a great job describing the underwater world, and I still like that the mermaid / mermen have swapped gender roles. Ebby does have character growth even with it being a small book when she realizes having a true mate doesn’t have to be a bad like that with other mermaids, that she is in control of herself. The book also had a cute ending with the rest of the family.

When I saw that a sequel novella to The Merman's Kiss about Ebby, I knew I had to read it! Especially as Ebby chose to be female! I was surprised that she chose to be female after watching the other mermaids, but I knew the choice was almost inevitable from a plot standpoint. And so fabulously done!

I adored Ebby; she maintained her innocence and compassion despite choosing to be a mermaid. Then she found love! I loved Kato, her fierce little shrimp pet...much more awesome than Flounder. I enjoyed the additional world-building in this story, and it seemed to be a pretty seamless addition to the merfolk of her Mates for Monsters. I spent a fantastic evening reading this and The Merman's Quest. If you loved The Merman's Kiss, give this one a try.

Tamsin Ley, could you just keep writing about mermaids and mermen? I can't seem to get enough yours. Maybe later I'll shamelessly beg for more djinn and other mythological creatures/monsters who need mates, but for now, I'll beg about merfolk. :-)

Most of the romances featuring mermaids as the main character do not show show brutal the mermaids can be to males as well as each other. This story starts out with a very dangerous situation for Cruz and Ebby trying to save him from the cruelty of her fellow mermaids. They develop a strong bond and it really changes how she views herself.

Cruz is a good guy that lost his hearing at a young age. He finds himself thrown into this dangerous situation but instinctively trusts Ebby to rescue him. I enjoyed how the author developed their relationship. You really got to see the struggle they faced to find a future together..

It is very well-written and has some very good supporting characters as well that help bring a richness to the story. I especially enjoyed her relationship with her uncle. He really supported and guided her when she was left without anyone to help her.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

I absolutely love Tamsin Ley’s books they are so full of excitement and sexy scenes. Ebby is a Siren who won’t use her voice especially with what happened to her father. Cruz goes for a swim all alone in the ocean when he is surrounded by Mermaids vicious nasty blood thirsty Mermaids who want to take him to his death. Along comes Ebby and she tries to save the human but the Mermaids turn their aggression on to her, so now Cruz has this beautiful mermaid being attacked trying to save him so now he tries to rescue her even if that means it will kill him in the end. I loved this story and the chemistry between Ebby and Cruz is hot and this is a fantastic addition to the A Mates for Monsters series. This is not your normal mermaid story the females of the species are vicious and bloodthirsty but not Ebby she is a kind hearted soul and she has a great mate in Cruz. A fantastic story a 5 plus ⭐️ read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

I think this can be read as a stand alone, but the background from the other two merfolk stories gives it more depth.
According to the lore, to put it simply, mermaids are bad. There are some non-consentual themes in the story. I didn't see anyone else mention it, but it's definitely there, so sensitive readers beware. That aside, I think the story was cute.
Ebby is a mermaid, but she doesn't want to be like other mermaids, so she dedicates her life to attempting to rescue the victims of other mermaids. Cruz, the main love interest, is deaf. It's an interesting premise when you consider mermaid victims are manipulated by the fact they can hear.
I can't really explain why I think the story is cute without spoiling anything. The best I can do is describe it as an accidental romance.
It was a nice wrap up for the merfolk section of the series. It seemed like it was left open for another mermaid story, and I would gladly read it if another one is released.

Quick Read. Awesome Cover!💕🐙

Sentinel, Virgin, Dangerous Mermaid's, Destiny and a Mate Bond.
These words alone pull you into a world of seduction, mythical beings beneath the ocean waves and treacherous danger.
Get your feet wet with another well written addition to Tamsin Ley's "Even Monster's Need a Mate" series, that will have you quickly turning each page, cheering for our heroine Ebby to hold true to her innate goodness within, when surrounded by nasty adversaries and Cruz's . . . .
We'll, as this is a novella, I'll leave it there, and recommend you read it for yourself.
Thoroughly enjoyed, and looking forward to more of this series.
Well done Tamsin Ley, another wonderful riveting read.

I’m not going to summarize this book as the publisher’s blurb does a perfectly good job of it without spoiling anything. Instead I will simply note that with that this is where to come if you are interested in magic, mermaids, sirens, a wonderful (and wonderfully imaginative) plot, great leads (Ebby and Cruz), and a superb supporting cast. Yup, Tamsin Ley’s A Mermaid's Heart: A Mates for Monsters Novella pretty much has it all. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

A very fun, very easy read.

Cruz is a deaf guy... which means he can't hear the mermaid's siren song. Instead he just finds himself accosted by a bunch of really ferocious mermaids on a dive. There's no hypnotism to soften it for him. The attack is... sexual and kind of cool/kinky to a red-blooded man, but mostly he's a little freaked out and alarmed.

Ebby isn't like her sisters. She's afraid of her instincts and capabilities, and really doesn't want to get involved, but she feels for the human and is determined to help him get away. Which of course means she's involved, already.

Then feelings get involved. Factor in a cute little shrimp (her pet), an imprisoned octopus (his guard), and a chest full of treasures... and you have a really fun book.

A Mermaid’s Heart

Loved this sweet story. After watching her father suffer heartbreak because of her mother Ebby determined that the male mer was the weaker sex, but she refused to be as viscous and selfish as her mother and other females or as broken as her father. So when a group of mermaids captures a human male to toy with Ebby is determined to rescue him. As she fights her attraction for him, fearing that succumbing to the attraction will turn her into a monster like her mermaid peers. But Cruz was special in some way, he wasn’t susceptible to the other mermaids charms and he only wanted her too. Could he be different enough to help her resist the horrible fate she always thought would claim her ability to find happiness? Is Cruz strong enough to love her too?

A good closure to the trilogy, this final chapter was both heart-wrenching AND cathartic at it's core. I applaud the addition of a disabled character! Cruz fits seamlessly into the story and world of our characters. The female hierarchy is developed more thoroughly this time around, and new dimensions of the story are fleshed out. It was a beautiful conclusion, although I felt there is potential here for still another book for the oceanic nest, itself, and surrounding area. Not to mention for the humans who lost our protagonists at sea in the first part of our first book and this one! I crave more stories from this world and hope that the author can return us to this mer-universe some day in the near future!

Mermaids Like You've Never Known Before

A Mermaids Heart is a story about choices, standing up for you believe, about love, lust (lol) and maybe a bit of destiny! This is definitely not the retelling of the little mermaid story that you knew as a child... this is a story about some really nasty mermaids, a sweet one (Ebby) who wants to make her own choices and a human (Cruz) who wants to be accepted...what was seen as a disability from humans, may just end up saving his life where the mermaids are concerned. I enjoyed this latest book in the 'Mates for Monsters' series and I'd recommend this book, to 17 years and up (have to remember there are some naughty bits)!

A Unique Twist on Tamsin Ley’s Merman Series

I thought this was a great twist on Tamsin Ley’s merman series. You finally get to see a love story from the perspective of a mermaid. So far, the mermaids have been nothing but vicious creatures that cause suffering to all around them. This story challenges that narrative, even for the mermen who’ve lived with that reality all their lives. I like the kind of redemption this story brought to the race, and I also loved the unique characteristics of the hero that made him have defenses against the siren song of the mermaids. It was a fun read!

I’ve read the first three books in this series, and I’ve to admit I was intrigued by the whole premise - mermaids and mermen, with the ladies fulfilling the siren role of old and the men being the caregivers.
That said all though 3 mermaid stories are completed, the endings felt rushed, as if the author had grown tired of her characters and wanted to move on quickly. This is particularly obvious in book 2. Then there are cameo appearances in book 3 of characters from the earlier 2 books. However, again they were used minimally and felt a bit like a deus ex machina exercise to try and wrap things up.

Look.. it was fine.. nothing marvelous. She is a mermaid and tried to save a human guy from other mermaids.. apparently in this world mermaids are terrible and vicious but of course she is different.
Average spice scenes..
I liked that the guy is deaf, that's why he was not susceptible to the evil mermaid's song.
Overall is a very simple not exciting monster romance that instead of the guy being the monster she is. That was different and why I picked this book but I wouldn't say that is was good.
