I was thrilled to find out I won a copy of this book (and several others) through the Scary Goods Sweepstakes I entered on Lauren Lee’s Facebook page...and a $50 Amazon gift card! Woohoo 🎉 🥳. Thank you Emerald O’Brien and Lauren Lee!! 💜 I absolutely love this cover!!
Maybe it was just me, but i really couldn't get into this. It started out slow and for me, it just never picked up. About the time I thought it was starting to, it went off into past events again that had happened with the two sisters when they were children. By the time it returned to the current day story...I was just past caring. The story had crime, a mystery and action...some of the things that I need to be in a good mystery...and I can't even say that it wasn't well written. I bet anyone with more patience and tolerance than I have will probably be crazy about it. I'm not writing it off. I may try it again some other time.
Another thrilling case for Knox and Sheppard! O'Brien weaved the tale so perfectly, I didn't want to put it down once I started! Looking forward to the next one!
Another amazing read. Great author. These books are hard to put down. Can't wait to finish one & start another. As soon as you start reading, the story brings you in. Great plot. The story starts on the first sentence. It doesn't drag on & on before it gets interesting.
I really liked the two lead characters but especially Madigan. She's fighting her demons and fighting the baddies. Her detective sister Grace is working to solve a murder from a different angle.
Emerald O'Brien has done it again! A little while ago, I read the first book in the Knox and Sheppard series, The Girls Across The Bay, and the author was kind enough to send me the second book, The Secrets They Keep. I was anxious to find out what would happen next to Grace and Madigan and I was not disappointed!
When a dead body is discovered outside the reception hall at a wedding, Detective Grace Sheppard is called to the scene. As the investigation takes place, she finds herself struggling as her professional relationship becomes muddled with attraction. As for Madigan, she becomes obsessed with a traumatic event from her past, leading her closer to the truth than ever but further away from the one person who loves her the most. Grace and Madigan and both willing to find their suspects at any cost, but will it be too much?
Emerald O'Brien is a masterful storyteller. Her murder-mystery works draws psychological pictures of each of her characters, sharing their past and their present struggles. The author knows how to suck you in from the very beginning and when you think you have it all figured out, the story makes a total 180 with a twist you never saw coming. I cannot wait for book 3 in this series!
Another great story from Emerald O'Brien. This story takes off from the last book and draws you in with the suspense, drama and all the twists and turns you could want. You will find yourself turning page after page to find out what happens next, and you won't be disappointed.
Madigan and Grace's relationship has always been closer than blood siblings, but they both have secrets that may be pushing them away from each other.
Grace is called to a wedding where there has been a murder. Meanwhile Madigan is still frightened and trying to come to term with what happened to her after a recent attack and she's putting herself into dangerous situations trying to find out who attacked her and why. On top of that, she is dealing with her adoptive parent's behavior and why they act like the don't even like her anymore.
Even though this story ended without a cliffhanger, I hope to see more of these Girls by the Bay and their secrets along with their evolving life.
I highly recommend this and all books by Emerald O'Brien. I did receive an Advance readers copy (ARC) to review. The above is my honest review.
In this story Madigan and Grace are both fighting their own inner demons and trying to hide it from the other. Little do they know, that as they both do their own investigating it will come full circle back to them both! Grace is investigating the death at a wedding that Madigan had attended as a guest. Grace is also trying to keep a professional relationship with her partner Mac, but they both feel the chemistry between them. This causes even more problems during the investigation, but Grace is bound and determined to get back to being the Detective she was in the big city. Madigan is trying to find the person who attacked her and left her afraid of her own shadow. Even an alarm system and her dog isn't keeping the feeling of helplessness away when she is alone. In the end, things get really interweaved between the two investigations. Whose life will be lost in the end? You will have to read the book to find out who the winner is and who is the loster. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and this is my opinion of it. A wonderful suspenseful story!
Sometimes your closest family is not blood. Grace and Madigan are something special. This continues after The Girls Across The Bay, so if you have not read it, I recommend stopping here and reading that one first. After reading over half of this one I learned that Wrong Angle ties in between them. While this one can be read as a standalone I don't recommend it. You don't want to miss out on all the goodness.
Emerald is a newer to me author, and I am loving her stuff. I can't wait to read more. There is so much mystery and suspense, with just a little romance mixed in. This is mostly about the girls and their relationship with each other.
Emerald O’Brien is a masterful storyteller. In the guise of a murder mystery she draws a psychological picture of each of her characters, sharing their past and their present and how it impacts the story.
Grace is called out to a wedding where one of the groomsmen has been killed. Her sister is a guest, there with her adoptive parents. While Grace is trying to solve the case she is also working hard at keeping things business only with her partner. Madigen, still traumatized by the intruder attack, is determined to find and face her attacker. She also need to come to terms with her adoptive parents behavior.
I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.
This is the second book in the Knox and Sheppard series and I hope there are more. I love Madigan and Grace and of course Emerald's mysteries are so good. She sucks you in from the very beginning and you don't want to stop reading as you have to know what happens next. Just when you think you have it figured out...BAM, nope sorry go back and turn around because Emerald always throws in a twist you never saw coming. Book 2 sees the return of our favorite characters from book 1 as well as plenty of new ones. I highly recommend this series for anybody who likes a good mystery, you won't be disappointed!
This was another GREAT story from Emerald O'Brien and the reason I always find the perfect escape from Romance. This story draws you in with the crime, but keeps you there with the feeling, you keep flipping pages because you want to know what happens and see how the story unfolds - both personally and professionally. I became invested in Madigan and Grace's relationship in the first book, so I have to admit parts of this hurt a little - then again that is what makes it more "real".
Another great Grace and Madigan thriller. Grace has been called to a wedding where a murder has occurred. Cory, the victim, is a compulsive gambler and the list of suspects includes his wife, his ex business partner, his friend who is in love with his wife and the people who run the casino where he gambled away his fortune. Madigan is fighting demons trying to figure out who attacked her.
Lots of twists in this story. I am looking forward to book three in this series.
All I can say is WOW!! Each book I read by Emerald O'Brien makes my appreciation of her talents grow. She is a wonderful storyteller as well as a master of character development. In "The Secrets They Keep" we continue following Grace and Madigan from book one. Full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing from start to finish. Highly recommended. I received a free copy of the book but my review is completely voluntary and unbiased.
Book 2 of Knox and Sheppard was as thrilling as the first. The ladies are dealing with their own demons as they deal with their daily lives. Madigan is determined to find the person who attached her and Grace is facing her own issues while trying to solve a murder that happened at a wedding Madigan was attending. There are so many twists and turns, the true killers are hard to figure out until the very end. Great job!!
This book left me wanting more, hope to read the continuation of this story about Madigan and Grace as they continue on their journey through life. Madigan and Grace have ghosts as well as secrets and they are hopefully on the road to recovery. Really enjoy Emerald O’Brien’s writing style. Cannot wait to read the further adventures in this series.
This book was an AMAZING read! I absolutely loved the two different story lines built around Grace's case and Madigan's hunt for the truth. The plot was diverse, interesting and flowed so smoothly and seamlessly from sister to sister. This was a fantastic follow-up to the first novel, and I am very much looking forward to more offerings from O'Brien in this series.
Too complex a story - and the "thoughts" (in italics) were often confusing as one had to work out who was thinking what! However, the author managed to steer clear of blasphemous language, and there was only a limited amount of foul language. A good proof-reader would have picked up the errors that I have noted!
I received this as an ARC, and am voluntarily providing an honest review. Emerald has written another fantastic book. I got to know the girls history a lot better in this book. It was very interesting. The storyline was great. It held my interest from page one. I highly recommend this book.
Heart-pounding, thrilling, couldn't-put-it-down! O'Brien strikes again with an amazing sequel in the this fantastic series. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and can't wait for the next! I feel such a close connection to the sisters, and I know other readers will, too.
Secrets can be deadly for a lot of people. Grace is investigating a case where the murderer struck at a wedding. Her sister Madigan is still trying to find the man that attack her. A tight story line with realistic characters
OMG! Anther great read from Ms O’Brien. I love books that keep you guessing right up to the end and she never seems to fail me! I am off to get the next one in this line up!
These books are so good!!!! Total page turners especially near the end!!! I love the relationship between Madigan and Grace!!! A little romance in this one, but not the focus of the book! Lots of suspects, and kept you guessing to the end!
The attack on Madigan changed her to the point of desperation! While Grace was investigating the murder at the wedding that Madigan and her parents attended, Madigan's search for her attacker would bring the two together in a way they would never imagine!
I think I am going to really enjoy this series of heroine books! These women have been through so much and truly show how strong they are and how they refuse to let any person break them! Its amazing!
I thought book 1 in this series was near perfect, this one is also. But it does have some aggressive foul swearing and profane cursing. No open bedroom doors or thought. Good plot, amazing story.
I liked this book, EXCEPT for the main character being one of those people who think they can't talk to or react or be with someone because they will think badly of them. Otherwise, a good story, and nice "sisters" stuff happens.
