After childhood plans to become the captain of a starship didn’t pan out, Suzanne Brockmann took her fascination with military history, her respect for the men and women who serve, her reverence for diversity, and her love of storytelling, and explored brave new worlds as a bestselling romance author.
Over the past thirty years she has written sixty-three novels, including her award-winning Troubleshooters series about Navy SEAL heroes and the women—and sometimes men—who win their hearts. Her personal favorite is the one where her most popular character, gay FBI agent Jules Cassidy, wins his happily-ever-after and marries the man of his dreams. Called All Through the Night, this mainstream romance novel with a hero and a hero hit the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list. In 2007, Suz donated all of her earnings from this book, in perpetuity, to MassEquality, to help win and preserve equal marriage rights in Massachusetts.
In addition to writing books, Suz writes and produces indie movies and TV including the award-winning romantic comedy The Perfect Wedding. Her recent feature, Out of Body, is streaming on Amazon Prime.
In 2018, Suz was given the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award from the Romance Writers of America. Her latest projects are Blame It on Rio (Tall, Dark & Dangerous # 14), available in print and e-book from Suzanne Brockmann Books, and Marriage of Inconvenience, a six-episode LBGTQ rom-com TV series, streaming on Dekkoo in April 2023.
3,5 estrellas.
I love the series and this is a wonderful holiday addition.
This is action packed but the small package of a category romance Brockmann spends as much time on the romance as she does the larger plot. The heroine is wonderful and Crash changes to believe that love is necessary. Their love story will really warm you up!
Opening line: "It was only two days after Thanksgiving, but the city streets were already decked with wreaths and bows and Christmas lights."
Well this was another excellent instalment from Brockman’s Tall Dark & Dangerous series. Here with this 6th addition we get Billy “Crash” Hawken’s story and jeez did I ever fall hard for him. A member of “grey group” (who occasionally work alongside SEAL Team 10) Crash is aloof, loyal to a fault and oh so sexy in his secretive, lethal sort of way. He’s a man of few words and even less emotion, or so it seems.
HAWKEN’S HEART is a well written and moving story, told here in two distinct sections each taking place a year apart. Brockmann also manages to encompass one of my favourite themes with this one; that of reunited lovers, made even better here as they’re on the run and that always guarantees a good time. With a fast paced plot, memorable characters, searing love scenes (which for the most part take place in hotel bathrooms and against walls) and an ending that had me saying “perfect, how does she do it?” This one is not to be missed.
Navy SEAL Crash Hawken is the prime suspect in the assassination of his commanding officer. Charged with treason, conspiracy and murder he’s been stripped of his commission and awaits the death penalty. The last person he expects to visit him in prison is Nell Burns; I mean things didn’t exactly end well between them last Christmas and he hasn’t spoken to her since, avoiding any contact by accepting multiple overseas missions. Her faith in him is unwavering though and as she tries to clear his name Nell unwittingly becomes a target, forcing these former lovers on the run. When it becomes evident that Crash is going to give his life (are those explosives in your pocket or …) to keep Nell safe and find the man responsible for killing the Admiral, SEAL Team 10 finally enters the picture to back up our boy.
Waiting almost the entire book to hear from our SEALs had me full of anticipation, (which I’m sure Brockmann did on purpose) because when we’d last left them several team members had been injured and I wasn’t entirely sure of their fate. Thankfully she didn’t disappoint, with all playing roles. I also really enjoyed the significant subplot involving Admiral Robinson (The Admiral's Bride) and his wife Daisy. This is bittersweet as Nell and Crash find each other but ultimately we witness the last days of Jake and Daisy’s love story. Cheers people.
Thanks to Buggy for recommending this book! This was my first foray into Suzanne Brockmann’s Tall Dark & Dangerous series, and it certainly won't be my last. (The cool thing is that "Harvard's Education", which I think is #5 in the series, also came in the ebook package I bought for my Nook). When Buggy mentioned that a hot uniformed man was imprisoned for murdering his commander, I knew this book was right up my alley!
Some things I really enjoyed: * Nell's character. She had a softness about her but she was also very strong. I also laughed when she made fun of "Crash's" name. What the heck kind of name is that? Very appropriate for a SEAL, I guess. I thought she should've called him Will. * Crash/Billy. He epitomized the brooding, stoic hero, and I loved when his walls finally came "crashing" down (with Nell's help). * The line "If you'd die for me, why won't you LIVE for me?" Go Nell! * The little surprise at the end. * The tightness of the story. The book was on the short side, mostly because there wasn't unnecessary fluff, and I liked how I could finish it in one weekend.
I wish more of the story took place in prison but I think it was important to know the development of their romance in order to connect deeply with the characters. A great read!
It is simply amazing how Suzanne Brockmann manages to make the characters so interesting, to give us so much insights in their lives, their feelings, well enough to make myself sorry to leave them at the end of the book, while managing at the same time an investigation about who's the mysterious bad guy. All of that very successfully, in under 250 pages. The first part is extremely affecting, when we share with Nell and Crash the last days of Daisy. Both main characters are perfect and perfect for each other.
Reread March 2014 - definitely among my favorites in this series, spellbinding suspense, unreserved love between both leads, as well as a secondary couple. I up the rating to 5 stars
Everyone knows Brockmann is one of my favorite authors so I won't re-mention what a master craftsman she is with the written word. This book is one of her best. I still think "Letters To Kelly" is numero uno, but this book ranks a close second. Crash and Nell are both such deep characters. They're strong, yet vulnerable and flawed, tough, yet sensitive, as well as honorable, passionate, and amazingly unique. The story is hanging-by-a-nail intense. This is one of those books I wish I could re-read for the first time again. No doubt, it is also one I will enjoy reading over and over.
Tim Alpha Squad akhirnya membantu Crash, itupun hanya sedikit saja porsinya.
This book was sooooo good!!! I was only halfway through it before I started planning on reading it again immediately after I finished it. A wonderful, magical, heart-warming story...lots of depth of emotion here and the fact that it was set during Christmas made it even more perfect. LOVED this book!
It is the 2nd book located in the newly released Tall, Dark, & Devastating book by Suzanne Brockmann. The original book was released in 1998 and is 6th out of a series...that I think goes to 11 books total. I am going to have to find the other 5 books the hard way because they haven't been rereleased like these original 6 have and I NEED to read the whole series. It's been very, VERY good!!!
Cuma baru meletup-letup stl Daisy meninggal. Dan Crash menghilang.
Setahun kemudian, Crash tertimpa musibah. Dia dituduh membunuh Jake. Tapi anehnya, Crash sdh tahu siapa pelakunya. Mungkin utk mempersingkat ceritanya. Crash & Nell CLBK lagi dah intinya. Suspense-nya biasa aja dan gak greget lagi (mungkin beda rasanya kalau saya bacanya 20 thn yg lalu). Karakter kedua tokoh utamanya biasa saja walau Nell lebih cenderung emosional dan impulsif, tapi msh dlm ambang batas.
Nilai kekeluargaan yg kompak sangat kental dlm novel ini. Gak tau dah knp hal begini skrg malah bikin mood baca jd males.
Intensely emotional and sexy read, renamed Hawken's Heart
Navy SEAL Billy "Crash" Hawken was practically raised by his cousin Daisy and her common-law husband, Admiral Jake Robinson, after his mother died when he was ten years old, and his uncaring father neglected him. In his adult life, he is closer to them than anyone on earth. Then he learns that Daisy has an inoperable brain tumor. Getting through the tragedy of Daisy's last days on earth is made both more difficult and more bearable by living under the same roof with beautiful, sensitive Nell Burns, Daisy's personal assistant. Crash works for "grey ops," super-secret missions as an assassin, with Jake as his direct supervisor. He is out of the country most of the time, and he feels he is a terrible prospect for any woman as a long-term mate. Until meeting Nell, he's never had any trouble maintaining emotional distance, but the combination of Daisy's final illness and Nell's empathy and compassion has him breaking all the rules he's set for himself, and massively falling for Nell. With extreme difficulty, he convinces himself as much as Nell that he has nothing to offer her and drives her away.
Crash ignores every attempt Nell makes to contact him for an entire year. Then she suddenly views on the evening news Crash's arrest for the murder of Jake Robinson. Strong evidence is stacked against Crash, but Nell has not a single doubt of his innocence, and she is determined to prove it to the world, even though Crash tells her to stay out of it when she visits him in prison.
This book is memorable on two counts. First, we get to experience Crash and Nell, an amazing couple. I fell in love with both of them, and the passion and tenderness between them is mind-bogglingly intense.
Second, it is great to experience the backstory of another one of Brockmann's amazing heroes, Admiral Jake. He is the hero of The Admiral's Bride, which is the next book in this wonderful SEAL series.
It's not essential to read the (currently, as of 2022) 13 books in Brockmann's Tall, Dark and Dangerous series in order, but it greatly adds to one's enjoyment to do so. Each book sets up the book that immediately follows it, introducing the SEAL who will be the hero of the next book, along with pertinent backstory, for the first 11 books. In the case of this book, the events of the book just prior to this one, Harvard's Education, are highly significant to the suspense plot. The last two books in the series, written many years after #11 are slightly different in that regard. In particular, the hero of #13 King’s Ransom is an important subcharacter in #3 Frisco’s Kid. This is the order in which this series was originally released:
1) Prince Joe, June 1996 2) Forever Blue, October 1996 3) Frisco's Kid, January 1997 4) Everyday, Average Jones, August 1998 5) Harvard's Education, October 1998 6) It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, December 1998 (Renamed: Hawken's Heart) 7) The Admiral's Bride, November 1999 8) Identity: Unknown, January 2000 9) Get Lucky, March 2000 10) Taylor's Temptation, July 2001 11) Night Watch, September 2003 12) SEAL Camp, May, 2018 13) King’s Ransom, December, 2020
There are three main reasons to buy this book: 1) Suzanne Brockmann wrote it, so you know it's going to be good; 2) it IS a great story, and 3) both Ms. Brockmann and MIRA are very up-front about this book being a reissue of one of her previous releases.
Originally published in December 1998 as IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR, the story has lost none of it's originality, sensuality, or action/adventure.
The story revolves around William "Crash" Hawken, a member of SEAL Team Twelve who gets framed for the murder of his Admiral boss and mentor, Jake Robinson. With his SEAL Team, superiors, and once friends convinced that he set the Admiral up for assassination, Crash has no one to turn to. Thankfully, someone comes to HIM.
Nell Burns spent a lot of time with Crash the previous year, at the home of Admiral Robinson and his live-in lover, Daisy Owens. The couple had been together for over twenty-years, and although they'd never had children of their own, they considered Crash to be their son. When Daisy is diagnosed with a deadly brain tumor, both Nell, her personal assistant, and Crash, her nephew, decided to make her last days as wonderful as possible.
That last year, Nell and Crash were lovers--for one night. But neither has ever forgotten the other, and now that Crash is literally fighting for his freedom, reputation, and very life, the two are on the run to find the real murderer of Admiral Robinson.
You won't go wrong with this book, or any other in Suzanne Brockmann's SEAL series.
This is probably, after Prince Joe, my favourite...Certain part had me in tears!! My heart ached for the characters!
A very well writing and moving story.
Once again I borrow the review of another, as others have the ability to put into words what I feel and wants to say, but lack the words.
Buggy:"Navy SEAL Crash Hawken is the prime suspect in the assassination of his commanding officer. When it becomes evident that Crash is going to give his life (are those explosives in your pocket or …) to keep Nell safe and find the man responsible for killing the Admiral, SEAL Team 10 finally enters the picture to back up our boy."
My favourite line out of the book: "If you'd die for me, why won't you LIVE for me?"
Third time reading. Yep! Still going strong. I skipped the action-packed resolution, but the romance and the hero and heroine are still worth the 5 stars.
And since I'm rereading my favorite books and have already downgraded three former 5-star reads, I'm very happy to be able to keep a few.

Just finished this book for the second time and it totally blew me away. This is, in my opinion, the best one of the entire series. The tension is so thick all through the book and the emotions are raw and real. Wow.

Review after first time reading:
One of the better books in this series. I actualy liked the heroine in this book. It didn't feel like part of the series though, and when it started to include seal team 10, it kind of felt forced. But i liked this book a great deal: lots of plot twists to keep the story going and a great set of secondary characters: Jake and daisy with their own love story.
As Christmastime settled quietly over the countryside, Navy SEAL William "Crash" Hawken was faced with a deadly conspiracy. And he had only one person to turn to -- the caring passionate Nell Burns. For though Crash had long ago accepted the fact that there was no place in his dangerous world for the simple pleasures of home and family, Nell had been the only woman who had ever tempted him to dream of another kind of life...
Now, as he needed Nell more than ever before, he was beginning to see all that they could have together. What the future might be. If only he could be assured that they had one..."
I can't help but compare this book to the story of Cosmo from the TS series (Hot Target). Both men were considered silent by nature, found the woman of their dreams and opened up. The difference is that Crash's journey is much more believable than Cosmo's was. I also liked Nell much more than Cosmo's Jane...she was tougher and and more personable at the same time.
I read this book under its reprint version called Hawken's Heart (a much better title than the one Brockmann's publishers talked her into all those years ago).
Diskip beberapa halaman karena boring.bingung sama narasi&dialog yg ngalor ngidul ga jelas.narasi kmana, dialog kemana.crush jg ky patung aja.nell jg antara iya dan tidak.pkknya jelek bgt
Navy SEAL William "Crash" Hawken first gets to spend time with Nell Burns when they are dealing with a horrible situation. Artist Daisy Owen has been like his mother since he was ten years old and Admiral Jake Robinson was her lover and almost like a father to him since then too. Nell is Daisy's personal assistant.
When Daisy is diagnosed with a brain tumor and given less than two months to live, both Crash and Nell are determined to make her last days wonderful despite the grief and loss they are feeling. And despite their unresolved feelings for each other. Billy doesn't do relationships. His job is both incredibly secret and incredibly dangerous. There is no way he wants to give his heart to someone he has to walk away from. Nell isn't afraid to love him though she prefers a more risk-free life.
After Daisy dies, just days after marrying Jake, Billy heads out of the country on special missions for Jake. And Nell begins a new job in Washington DC as the personal assistant for an actress who is trying to start up a theater. All of her letters to Billy go unanswered, but she hasn't moved on to another man.
One year after Daisy's death, Billy gets an assignment to take care of Jake and finds that he has been suckered into a mission that will wind up with Jake dead and Billy carrying all the blame. But Billy is determined to find out who set him up and who had Jake murdered. And even when it looks like all his military colleagues have turned against him, Nell refuses to believe that Billy could ever have killed Jake.
A couple of attempts on Nell's life send Nell and Billy off to try to find out who set him up and who killed Jake.
This was excellent romantic suspense. I loved the romance between Billy and Nell. It was also action-packed suspense with Billy and Nell on the run from a wide assortment of formidable enemies.
This story, written in 1998, is one of the reasons I became a fan of romantic suspense. It has held up quite well in the twenty-five years since it was first released.
Again.. again the author portrayed a stupid in love h. And I don't know how readers like this kind of h ..Who are useless, talk like broken record, pathetically in love with H .... and so on🥱🥱🥱 God I'm so bored. I just want to finish this series. I already dnf-ed one book. And disliked more than that. Ok if my friend/bf/husband is someone who works secret op. or for govt., i sure as hell never ask him to tell me what he do there! There is a reason for this kind of information concealed to civilian right? God what is wrong with this woman?? H has said that he can't tell anything but h is like 'u can tell me, I'll never tell anyone' or after listening 'what?how could u do that? omg u kill people..nooo' ..🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
I just couldn't like the h. Okay if you don't wanna fuck why inviting someone? This is the only reason i have no prob with guys. I mean when they need sex they casually do that.no strings no attachment..just simply having sex. Why can't woman do that..ohh because they are very loyal ..they can't fuck other in the meantime..but they can do dinner dates..kiss..and use other gentleman but not sex.RIGHT😂😂 OHMYGOD how much I hate pathetic woman .... Okkk. Now I'm thinking it was a bad decision to want to complete this series. Because seriously I'm half of the time wanting to DNF it and other half skimming through... I don't even like the H. I liked Cowboy better. He was not asshole with his h .. and totally honest. I think the story was good. But the story is not only element in a novel. There are characters also. If this h was more matured, intelligent and used some of her brain cells rather than being pathatic and H was not trying to be an asshole the whole time, this novel would have been better.
I sure don't remember reading this book before, but it's shelved with the rest of the series in the "read" book case, so I must have. I did like reading about Jake and Daisy, because Jake's story comes up later in the series. Daisy is amazing! I wish we had an entire book about their romance.
Crash and Nell are terrific. I wonder if SEAL team men are really like the characters in this series? They sound too perfect to be true.
Gabby is at it again. I love this character! The story starts with odd occurrences happening with Christmas decorations around town. Then evolves into Gabby investigating in her quirky way to finally end up solving the mystery. This is a quick read. It has interesting twists. A hint of romance with Gabby and Riley but the romance isn't quite started yet.
I love the flow of this story. The characters are wonderful and the romance unfolds slowly. There are action/suspenseful parts, but the characters are the story. There are some sad parts, but the book is very enjoyable!
The H is a complete mess and cannot get past himself. The h was a solid person and put up with a lot. The constant head negative babble takes up a lot of the story and I found myself skipping quite a bit. Still like the series and am looking forward to reading the next.
