Letters to Kelly

Rate this book
HERO: Tyrone Jackson Winchester II — HEROINE: Kelly O'Brien — LOCATION: Boston and Cape Cod, Massachusetts — Either Way He Was A Condemned Man. — So here I sit, writing letters that have no hope of reaching you until I am free to deliver them myself. With luck, that will be soon. For your eighteenth birthday is coming, and I intend to be there, like I promised . . .

For years, a trumped-up charge -- and a Central American prison cell -- kept Jax Winchester from claiming the girl he loved. Now he was a free man. Or was he?

For only the memory of Kelly O'Brien -- and the letters he'd composed to her -- had kept him going. But once he was released, he knew he was still a prisoner -- in a jail of his own making. The way out this time? Keep that promise he'd made to Kelly all those years ago -- and claim her for his own . . .

After childhood plans to become the captain of a starship didn’t pan out, Suzanne Brockmann took her fascination with military history, her respect for the men and women who serve, her reverence for diversity, and her love of storytelling, and explored brave new worlds as a bestselling romance author.

Over the past thirty years she has written sixty-three novels, including her award-winning Troubleshooters series about Navy SEAL heroes and the women—and sometimes men—who win their hearts. Her personal favorite is the one where her most popular character, gay FBI agent Jules Cassidy, wins his happily-ever-after and marries the man of his dreams. Called All Through the Night, this mainstream romance novel with a hero and a hero hit the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list. In 2007, Suz donated all of her earnings from this book, in perpetuity, to MassEquality, to help win and preserve equal marriage rights in Massachusetts.

In addition to writing books, Suz writes and produces indie movies and TV including the award-winning romantic comedy The Perfect Wedding. Her recent feature, Out of Body, is streaming on Amazon Prime.

In 2018, Suz was given the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award from the Romance Writers of America. Her latest projects are Blame It on Rio (Tall, Dark & Dangerous # 14), available in print and e-book from Suzanne Brockmann Books, and Marriage of Inconvenience, a six-episode LBGTQ rom-com TV series, streaming on Dekkoo in April 2023.

Opening Line:"Kelly O'Brian lugged her heavy canvas bag of books into the back door of the university newspaper office.

This was an awesome little read that took me all of about 3 hours to finish and gave me everything I could possibly want in a romance. Charming, super fun and sexy. This story also contains a reunited lovers theme which is one of my personal favourites and comes complete with a sensitive, somewhat tortured (and very cute) beta hero as well as the hilarious historical romance character he’s writing and bantering with throughout. (The character talks back)

Letters To Kelly was also my very first foray into the world of Suzanne Brockmann. Why I’ve waited so long I have absolutely no idea?? Because if this little book, without a Troubleshooter, conspiracy or Navy Seal in sight is any indication of her talents then I’ve got a ton of fantastic reading ahead of me.

After agreeing to take his best friends little sister to prom, T Jackson Winchester II (thankfully also known as Jax) suddenly see’s the 16 year old Kelly in a whole new light. Realizing that he’d actually been in love with her for years (this was a bit of an ick factor considering he’s known her since she was 12) He admits his feeling to her that very night and promises that the second she turns 18 he’ll propose. Kelly’s brother later catches them in a compromising situation and threatens to have Jax arrested unless he leaves town. Kelly never hears from Jax again and when her 18th birthday comes and goes she’s heartbroken.

Little does she know that for the past 2 years Jax has actually been a prisoner in a South American Jail. He hasn’t forgotten Kelly or his promise but without any way to reach her he starts composing letters to Kelly in his mind. The letters also serve to keep him sane and were another great aspect to this book. By the time Amnesty international steps in and frees Jax, Kelly has moved on and married someone else. The meat of this story takes place 3 years later with our persistent hero fighting to win back the woman he loves while maintaining a successful career as a romance writer.

My absolute favourite parts of this book (other than the scene with the suntan lotion) would have to be the scenes where Jax is writing his historical romance novel and arguing with its hero Jared. And anyone even slightly interested in the craft of writing will appreciate these clever and often hilarious scenes. So, it seems I’ve now joined the league of Brockmann fans. Cheers.

“Don’t use words like bitch and dude” Jax reminded him tiredly. “You live in the 1860’s or have you forgotten?”
“Look at you.” Jared ignored Jax’s question. “You look like total crap--”
“Crap. Another fine word for a historical romance hero.”
“--You haven’t showered in days and your drinking beer at 9 o’clock in the morning--”
“Morning, night what’s the difference anyway?” muttered Jax.

I would've loved this one a lot more if the heroine wasn't so annoying and, IMO, unreasonable. I loved T. and the letters. Even T's romance novel was fun(even though it had a secret baby plot, lol)

Here's one letter...

Dear Kelly,

Another day dawns and I am still here in this damned miserable cell. But then you come, if only in my dreams….

You come after sunset. Tonight you are sixteen, and when you smile, I suddenly realize you are wearing your prom dress. You are so beautiful, my heart nearly stops beating.

You lean forward to kiss me, and I can feel your soft lips, smell your perfume. You take me with you, back in time, and for a while I am out of here. I sit with you in my sports car, wearing my tuxedo, and we kiss.

You are still so young, and I still don’t know any better. I can’t stop myself.

I love you.

Love, T.

A few things I struggled with...

-The author waited till the very end of the story for the hero to tell the heroine about his time in prison. Why? Why why WHY? It’s a big thing to keep a secret and was one of the reasons that kept them apart for years and she didn’t know about it and kept thinking he abandoned her. Drove me nuts.

-Jax was in prison for 2 years in Central America. He was beaten, whipped and punished severely. So where the hell are all his scars? You can not tell me he didn’t walk away from that without a few physical scars. I was waiting for Kelly to see one and ask him about it but...nope. It was very conveniently missing. Contrived and totally disregarded detail of the hero’s past history. It was such a contrived loophole to keep the secret going.

-The hero is a total sweetheart, he’s romantic, affectionate, sexy and leads with his heart and just wants the woman he loves. Nothing wrong with that. But I felt he was a little *too* emotional at times and his reactions were a bit much in some cases. I guess I wouldn’t have minded it as much if the heroine didn’t keep pushing him away and coming off so cold and detached. I honestly didn't see what was sooooo wonderful about Kelly that had Jax jumping through hoops to get her to give him a chance. *shrugs*

-Hated the hero’s name. Tyrone Jackson Winchester III. Blech. It's a mouthful and the countless nicknames were no better. He likes to go by "Jax" which is lovely but for some inane reason the heroine prefers calling him "Tyrone" or "T. Jackson" (cause that sounds so much better RME), or just "T" in some cases. What the hell kind of name is T. Jackson anyways? Hated it. So there’s Tyrone, T. Jackson, Jax, and T. The author kept flip flopping with all the different nicknames in the dialogue. It’s very inconsistent. And why Kelly couldn’t stick to calling him by one name irritated me more.

-The dialogue and plot were a little too corny for me. I would have loved the love letters if they weren't in present tense and summarizing everything in 1st person narration. Meh.

I selected this book thinking it would just be a nice, light, romantic read and I always enjoy Suzanne Brockmann's books. It was so much better than I anticipated. The novel completely revolves around the two main characters, T. and Kelly but there are four stories going on. Story one is when they first met and the history of their relationship until they were separated, story two is T.'s letters to Kelly he writes in his mind while he is imprisoned in Central America, story three is what is happening presently as T. tries to win back Kelly's love, and story four is the book T. is writing which is really biographical of his relationship with Kelly. I loved how T. has conversations with the romantic hero of his novel, Jared, and how Jared argues with him about how the story should go. I have heard authors say their characters tell them how the story should go but it was fun to read in a novel.

Kinda squirmy with the hero out of college going to prom with high schooler. Didn't mind the age gap after she grew up. Didn't really see what made the hero fall for the heroine and stay devoted to her. Not that there was anything wrong with the heroine but felt the author told more than showed the love development.

Cinta Lama Bersemi Kembali.

Nooooo ¡NO!

Me deja moñeca.

I've got mitigated feelings regarding this book.
First thing to know : the story starts when Kelly is 12 and Jax 18; they both realize they're in love with each other at 16/22. Nothing happens then but kisses. However I'm never really quite comfortable with this kind of setting and anyway do not usually appreciate so much stories of teen love ever lasting.
I really liked Jax and getting to know him, his past, why he did not fulfill the promises he gave to Kelly, how he tried to sway her once it became possible again, the letters he wrote before, those he wrote in the beach house they share. He's really a good hero.
Kelly, on the other side, is more a disappointment. I understood she turned to someone else a few months after being 18 and feeling turned down by Jax who did not show. It seemed so hasty that she should marry her new boyfriend after not more than a few months and move with him to California. Then after her divorce, she always assumed the worst, without asking for explanations or trying to see the differences. Well she really did not impress me and I thought a few times times Jax would be better off moving on and trying to find out someone else.

Listened to this as an unabridged audio. This was a little different Brockmann story, but still very enjoyable. Narrator made it even better. Lawlor didn't disappoint, never does. Makes a casual story riveting. His delivery is always spectacular! Just wish I could have Patrick Lawlor do ALL my audiobooks. He does such a wonderful job he should get an academy award every time.

Dan banyak hal lain yang kurang fit to the story.

Cukup 2/*5 saja kali ini. Maaf.

What a great story

I loved this book! It has a unique spin. T Jackson Winchester the second is Kelly’s brother’s college friend. Jax falls in love with Kelly even though she’s too young. Kelly, as young as she is, loves “T” as she calls him. He takes her to her junior prom and promises to wait until she’s old enough to get married. However, circumstances separate them for years and Kelly is broken hearted. She’s been married and divorced by the time “T” walks back into her life determined to marry her as he promised. He has it all planned out, but things don’t go according to plan.

Jax had been a prisoner in a Central American country. That is where he composes all his letters to Kelly but lack of pencil or paper, she never receives them. Kelly, believing T deserted her, refuses to get involved with him but he is honest and open about his feelings and doesn’t give up.

I loved that, as a writer, Jax has conversations with the character in his book. It is a unique spin on how he reasons out his problems. I also loved how warm and loving the intimate moments are.

Suzanne Brockmann is one of my go-to authors. I look forward to more from her.

It's been years since the last time I read Ms. Brockmann's works and I am glad to say that she hasn't lost her touch.

I like Jax very much and I ached for him when Kelly refused him over and over again. It was true that he should tell her what happened to him seven years ago, but if it happened, this beautiful story won't exist, so I think I could forgive this slip. I also love the letters, how wonderful it would to be the recipient of such love letters. Kelly was one lucky girl

I think I would re-read some of Ms. Brockmann's earlier works to refresh my memory

Gripping and romantic

In LETTERS TO KELLY, there are really three stories going on, and the way the past and present timelines were interchanged was good. The benefit of third line you’ll have to experience for yourself.

While it seems like a second chance love story, it’s one of those where the love between the two never died but they endured the confusion and painful of separation. I liked that there was no fooling around on Jackson’s part when it came to his feelings.

Letters to Kelly

Typical romance novel. Everyone is rich, talented and famous. The tension between the characters is predictable and overpowering. This novel was unique in that the author was also having a sidekick with one of his novel characters which he created.
