Little league baseball and a zombie - (!/?) But it really does work! Great 'team trial' book that teaches many lessons that are applicable in life and play! Always like to read books that combine two seemingly unrelated topics - and this book really does just that! The art meshes very well with the story.

This book was not for me. I didn’t like the art or the type. And the whole zombie witch baseball team wasn’t my cup of tea.

I have to confess that I would never have thought of combining a story about family and competition with the elements of baseball and zombies. But it works well here and makes me wonder if the author plans a second installment of this story. As often happens with families, two sisters are at odds and think they have nothing in common. Each one suspects that the other sister doesn't like her, which is, of course, not the case. Stacy and Gina Cavallaro both love to play baseball, but Gina is much more talented. In fact, Stacy's team has struggled all season, not even winning a single game. When their conflict prompts Gina to delve into the dark arts, her magic and Stacy's movement on the ball field awake a zombie. The girls come from a long line of witches, but they haven't been trained yet. The scenes with the zombie are frightening at first, but once the sisters and Stacy's teammates band together to figure out how to handle the zombie, things turn out okay. Although she makes only brief appearances, I loved their grandmother, and I got a kick out of all of Stacy's odd teammates. In the end, readers will realize that sisters really are forever, on and off the ball field. This graphic novel features a relatable story with an original plot and colorful, action-filled panels. Readers in fifth grade and up are likely to enjoy it.

Dugout: The Zombie Steals Home by Scott Morse, 249 pages. GRAPHIC NOVEL. Graphix (Scholastic), 2019. $13

Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Two sisters are on different baseball teams and the rivalry is fierce. They also happen to be the grand-daughters of a witch. When one sister puts a potion in the other sister’s glove, a zombie appears, followed by a ghost, and they must work together to control the chaos they have unleashed.

I think younger readers will enjoy this graphic novel, even though they will have to just go with the plot and not ask too many questions (why did the potion just bring one zombie and how do you have a potion that casts a spell, etc.). I think the only questionable part was when one of the sisters was possessed by the ghost in order to find the body it belonged in. Possessions are pretty creepy and this might be too much for some readers.

I thought this book was very fun. It is about a team who's field got flooded so went to a abandoned space to practice. And one players family is a witch and one of her sisters which is a witch cursed her baseball glove and when she dropped her glove a zombie came out the ground but the zombie was good and helped them get better. And the zombie saved one of the players little cousin. Thats the part I really liked.

The Cavallaro sisters are rivals, both on and off the baseball field. The twelve-year-olds are pitchers on their own teams, but Gina is just so good, how can she be such a good pitcher? Stacy is more than a little jealous, and she just wants her sister to like her. And for her team, the Rooks, to actually win a game or two. Gina, on the other hand, doesn't know how to handle her sister's jealousy. Oh, and Gramma is a witch. Everyone in town knows it, and yet, they don't seem to mind it. I guess it's because Gramma's magic is good. But when Stacy and Gina start messing with the magic, weird things start happening. Mainly, a zombie shows up in the middle of Rooks practice. And, wonder of wonders, this losing team starts playing a lot better when they are battling a zombie. Like Beans says, "Nothing makes you run faster than a dead guy on your butt."

Not gonna lie, I just had to reread this one, like, immediately. There is just something wonderful about teams with great characters, and the Rooks are one of those kinds of teams. Each kid on that team has a unique character, with absolutely hilarious funny quips, and a heart of gold. You can't NOT cheer on the Rooks as they get better and better - and as the Cavallaro sisters work together and grow closer while saving a poltergeist and a zombie. Trust me, this is a great book!

Goodreads seems to think this is going to be a series, and I am all down for that! The art style is what I would call the "classic comic book" look. Basically, it doesn't look cartoon-y, but the style rather looks more adult-ish, which is cool.

Thank you to the @KidLitExchange network and the publisher for the advance copy of Dugout: The Zombie Steals Home by Scott Morse which is set to be released June 25, 2019.

This is novel about sisters, rivalry, baseball, zombies, and witches. Stacy and Gina are twins who play on opposing baseball teams; Stacy plays for the Rooks while Gina plays for the Knights. They also happen to be the granddaughters of a witch and will inherit their powers and be taught the ways of a witch when they turn sixteen. Gina is a natural athlete and her team excels while Stacy's team has lost every game this season. They're so bad, most of the players believe they're cursed. Following a fight, Gina borrows Stacy's mitt and coats it in one of her grandmother's magical ingredients: corpse breath. By doing this, she unknowingly releases an actual curse on Stacy's team. When Stacy drops her mitt, a zombie breaks through the ground where it landed. In order to break the curse and set everything right, the two sisters will have to set aside their differences.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel and found it to be an engaging and quick read. Normally when one thinks of baseball or zombies, one assumes the main character will be male, so I was excited to discover that this book had two strong female main characters. This book is full of humor with puns and witty quips. The sibling rivalry is real and something that many readers can relate to. I also liked that this wasn't the traditional zombie story in that the zombie wasn't out to eat their brains and it wasn't full of violence. This was a very cool and interesting concept and I think my students will really enjoy this novel.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. I thought, riven the title, it would be super cheesy but it wasn’t. It was really well-written, funny, and fun. As a baseball fan I enjoyed the baseball facts in the back of the book. I really liked the artwork as well. I look forward to reading more in this series!

A fun but ultimately light story by one of my favorite comic creators. Morse's strength in conveying motion is in full force here, and the kids feel real in a Sandlot sort of way.

A variety of oddball elements but a good story about sibling rivalry at heart. Carries with it the sense of non-stop commentary you might expect from a group of sweet but hyper 11 year olds.

Gina and Stacy are twin sisters. They both love to play baseball. They're rivals in everything they do. Gina and Stacy might also be witches. Their grandma certainly is.

When sibling rivalry involves the sisters going through Meemaw's trove of enchanted ingredients and casting spells on each other, Gina and Stacy unearth a zombie in their hometown... literally.

Dugout: The Zombie Steals Home was published in 2019 by Graphix. I thought with baseball being a summer pastime, that this book might be a fun late July read. And I was right! Written and illustrated by Scott Morse, this was one of the freshest, funniest, and freakiest books I have ever read. I did not want the adventures to end!

The dialogue is really what won me over. Stacy's baseball team, The Oakvale Rooks, was composed of 9 hilarious little leaguers. I felt like I was reading a book set in perhaps the funniest of all all-ages baseball universes: The Sandlot! The quick wit. The banter. The spoonerisms and malapropisms. It was brilliantly written.

The artwork took a little while to win me over. Once the characters went from static to frantic, the pace of the artwork zoomed into the stratosphere. Morse's work on this book reminded me a little of a cross between the master artists of EC Comics and the all-ages work of Eric Powell.

As for age appropriateness. I would say readers 9 to 12 will really enjoy this book. There is some witchcraft, which I didn't expect as I neglected to read the back cover intro. However, it was on the level of Bewitched instead of something like The Conjuring. The zombie main character does look a little bit like he came from a George Romero zombie flick and there is a poltergeist giving Gina fits throughout the second act of the book. So there is a bit of an element of fright.

I really felt like this was a flawless read. Perfect for the dog days of summer or for just when the major league regular season is dying down and the playoffs are starting to heat up. Really, the only issue I had with this book was the publication date!

I mentioned earlier that Dugout was published in 2019. That's 5 years for those of you keeping score. It also means, that this book, which was clearly intended to be the kickoff to a new series, didn't get the attention it so deserves! I really feel like if Netflix turned this book into a streaming movie (animated, of course), it would do so freakin' well. I consider this opener to be The Sandlot of this generation. It's that good.

A spooky, smart fun read with a lot of laughs, this is a book parents and guardians of young readers should jump on board with, as long as the subject matter is deemed appropriate in your household. Hopefully, if this book catches fire, it might encourage Graphix and Scott Morse to continue the misadventures of Gina, Stacy and the Rooks of Oakvale!

Gina and Stacy are twins who play for rival baseball teams. This flows off the field into intense and sometimes unfriendly competition. The two live with their grandmother, who is also a witch. After the competition becomes a little too fierce, the two break into their grandmother's spell-casting stash and chaos ensues- beginning with a zombie coming out of the ground during Stacy's team's practice.

Stacy's team had been having a rough losing streak, but the zombie may just be what they need to whip the team into shape. As the two girls try to resolve their magical problems, they reconnect over their sisterly connection and ultimately love for each other.

What I loved: The illustrations in this graphic novel are great, and the dialogue bubbles are easy to follow. This is a good choice for reluctant readers. While the topic matter might seem scary, this is not your typical zombie (no brain eating- just baseballs). The book holds a lot of comedy as the kids realize they have an adult who will do what they want and try to take advantage. The ultimate message is one of family love and the strength of working together vs. against each other.

Final verdict: A solid story with great pacing and pictures makes this a middle grade graphic novel worth picking up. With ultimately good messaging, magic, and zombies combined with a hand of the comedic, this book is sure to appeal to even reluctant readers.

Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.

Hi everyone! It’s Ariel here, and I’m excited to tell you about a super fun graphic novel called "Dugout: The Zombie Steals Home".

In this book, twins Stacy and Gina Cavallaro are on different little league baseball teams. Gina is amazing at baseball and is the star of her team, while Stacy’s team is not doing so well and hasn’t won a game all season. The twins are also the youngest in their family of witches!

One day, Gina accidentally uses her magic to raise a zombie, and guess what? The zombie ends up coaching Stacy’s team! It’s really funny and kind of spooky, too. Stacy’s team is full of misfits with cool names like Billy, Sanchez, Levi, Beans, Paddy, Killroy, Gomez, and Boots. Even though they haven’t been doing well, they now have a chance to get better with the help of their zombie coach.

I loved this book because it’s full of action, magic, and funny moments. The illustrations are colorful and make the story really exciting. It’s fun to see how Stacy’s team, with their zombie coach, works together to try and win games.

My favorite part was when Stacy’s team plays a big game and tries to use their new skills and teamwork to win. It was so cool to see how they all came together to save the day!

If you like baseball, magic, and funny stories with lots of action, you will definitely enjoy "Dugout: The Zombie Steals Home." It’s a fantastic graphic novel with lots of adventure and laughs!

Happy reading!

A graphic novel with baseball, magic, and zombies?! Sign. 👏🏼 Me. 👏🏼 Up.👏🏼⁣

Y’all this graphic novel is something special. Usually graphic novels get a lot of lame-o comments about them from adults like, “that’s not real literature” OR “I don’t want my older kids reading a picture book”. BUT YOU GUYS!!!!! Don’t dismiss these wonderful works of literature! Graphic novels are just as important in developing reading skills as chapter books. When reading graphic novels you’re using decoding skills by grasping at a story through both text and pictures. I know that when I read a graphic novel I am immersed into a whole new experience. I more so feel like I’m a part of the book than when reading a chapter book. DONT KNOCK EM’ UNTIL YOU’VE TRIES EM’.⁣

This book kept me chuckling the whole way through with characters that definitely will be voted as class clown in their senior yearbook. This book brought back memories of watching the Sandlot as a child and I am so fond of that movie. I love magic. I love baseball. I love graphic novels. And I LOVED this book. 🧟‍♂️ ⚾️ 🤘🏼⁣

There are some things here that warrant a lower rating. I think that the plot takes awhile to get into. The first part of the book is a play by play at a baseball game, and that may turn some readers off. The font used here was a bit difficult to read, and the way the book uses a different bubble for (what feels like) every sentence made it difficult for me to follow along. There is also a large cast of characters, which means that almost every character feels like a caricature rather than a fleshed out person.

However, there were some good things here as well. Once you get into the zombie part, the plot really picks up and there becomes more plot elements which will appeal to a wider reader. The witch subplot was very well done (who doesn't love two girls finding out they're actually witches?). The ensemble cast caused some hilarious dialog (which made me laugh out loud TWICE to the chagrin of my husband.

Fun read. Twin sisters, whose grandmother is a witch, are fighting. They are on rival softball teams. Stacy's team tries hard but hasn't won a game but Gina's team is doing great. Gina throws that fact in Stacy's face causing Stacy to get upset. When Gina gets into grandmas things it causes Stacy to be part of a weird spell that makes her team better but it also raises a zombie from the dead. As the team tries to control the zombie things get out of hand. Stacy retaliates and puts a spell on Gina causing a spirit to arrive. They have to work together to make things right again bringing them closer as sisters.
It's a fun, fast paced story with characters you can love, root for and laugh with. Bold ,colorful illustrations showing the action clearly draw you into the story.

I read this book in a few days. Dugout was a fun graphic novel book with a little horror. I would have given it 5 stars but I didn't really like the ending. I feel like they could have added something to make the ending a little more interesting.I really liked this book and I think teens will too. I also didn't like the part when some of the team went to the movies without Stacy's permission knowing that they might get caught. I was glad that Stacy and her sister got along and Stacy’s team got better at baseball. I honestly thought the zombie would be messing them up and I was surprised he was helping them. I would recommend this to people who like looking at pictures and like surprises.

As the cover promises, this is a humorous baseball story, comparable to the movie The Sandlot if you add witches, ghosts, and zombies. Feuding sisters play on separate and competitive baseball teams. When they start dabbling with their grandmother’s witchcraft tools, things get messy and supernatural, but the co-ed teams pitch in to help the sisters, and ultimately, the zombie and ghost, too. This is a sure-thing for tween graphic novel and sports fans.

Twin sisters who play baseball, one on a winning team and the other on a losing team, don’t get along. Oh, and they also are descendants of a witch family, when Gina put a spell on her sister Stacy’s glove, bringing a zombie out of the ground, a whole new pot of trouble brews. Will they be able to avoid being eaten by the zombie?

This rating is a combination of my son's thoughts and mine. We read this book together. He loved it...a graphic novel with zombies and baseball. For me it was okay. It's not the type of book I would read but we have a tradition of him picking out a book we read together. The illustrations are really well done. The story was nice.

Little League Baseball and a zombie. I didn’t think it would work, but it somehow did. Super cute story; I very much enjoyed it. My only complaint was that it wasn’t divided up into chapters, so it was sometimes hard to find a good place to stop. However, I still definitely recommend trying it out.

My 11 year old reading companion dreaded reading this. It was one of several books given to her for Christmas. She had had enough of zombies in THE LAST KIDS ON EARTH, knew nothing of baseball, just toiled through FAIREST OF ALL (with its own witch), and it was my pick! She loved it. She is really coming along with the fluency and voice of the characters. This book was fun and funny.

Identical twins Stacy and Gina are on opposing baseball teams, but are also budding witches. Although always at odds with one another they have to work as a team when a spell goes awry, and summons a zombie, it's up to the both of them to set things right.
