Princess Tabby loves playing in the palace with her brothers and reading about brave kitty heroes. When Tabby and her brothers accidentally give away a magic scroll to the evil King Gorgonzola, they must leave the safety of their castle to get it back.
But reading about adventures and going on a real quest are two very different things. Tabby's never been afraid before, but suddenly she doesn't feel so brave. Will she be able to find her courage and save Mewtopia?
"My favorite is the cats, the girl cats, Tabby and Clawdia are the best. I didn't like the rat, but I liked the part where they defeted the rat. And when they said "Take this rat to jail" (I don't think they said that) The brothers were cool, still amazing. The mine was cool too, but I really didn't like the rat, or the stinky cheese."
Welcome to Mewtopia, a kingdom run by Cats and Kittens. The story opens with 3 rambunctious kittens (Tabby, Felix, and Leo) who are getting ready for their parents to host a royal ceremony. The royal cats are getting ready to have their laws recorded on the golden scroll, while the kittens are listening to stories about the evil rat king and the old heros of Mewtopia. When their nanny falls asleep, the kittens sneak off to have an adventure and are playing around in the treasure room, thats when they see the scroll stolen. The kittens work together to escape the castle, hunt down the scroll, defeat the rat king and save the kingdom!
Tabby, Leo, and Felix are the three kittens of the royal couple. While their nanny is dozing, the sneak out into other parts of the castle to explore. They stumble across the a golden scroll important in a ceremony for the kingdom that evening. The King and Queen will declare the laws for the kingdom which will appear on the scroll in the last rays of the sun. But the scroll is stolen, and the royal kittens are the only ones who know. Can they rescue the scroll before it is too late?
I was quite pleasantly surprised by the depth of world building and complexity of plot in this. It is a bit deeper than the average lower grade fiction book, and definitely deeper than the cover makes you think. The author actually took time to come up with unique phrases that are very fitting for cats that hints at an otherness to their language. The kingdom has a folklore that ties into what happens. The mystery of who took the scroll has just enough clues for the reader and the kittens to figure things out. There's an adventure where character development happens in the three kittens, and the ending leaves things open to further build on both the baddy introduced and the kittens incognito hero/rescuing adventures. Highly recommended to lower grade readers looking for a little more depth in their stories, especially fantasy/adventure story fans.
Notes on content: Some potentially perilous situations but no one is seriously hurt.
Luis & I read this book aloud to Juliana in spring of her 1st grade year. It's great to see her get into beginner chapter books. This is a quick to read series about the Kitten Kingdom - with King Pouncealot, Queen Elizapet, and their 3 kittens which are undercover superheros - they have to fight the mean rat Gorgonzola.
This is a good, easy to read 1st book in a series that I read aloud to Juliana. It's a chapter book with a few black and white pictures scattered throughout the book. Juliana liked it. It was about cats, dogs and rats.
