I read the first book earlier in the month and that book was basically just a book version of an episode. This wasn't really the case for this book, it was a wholly original story set sometime in either season 2 and 3 (I might be wrong on that, it doesn't really say). That being said it did really feel just like an actual episode of the series and I could see it fitting in somewhere in the series.
Okay story about many of the main characters finding a hidden island of magical creatures. Cute idea, but given that the animals are never seen or mentioned in the show it made the ending really obvious.
Two issues: 1. Glimmer was called "Glitter" by Queen Angella and 2. At one point Perfuma said there were flowers she'd never seen before but then immediately identified one and knew it was dangerous.
I think the island of animals was a very cool plot line, but the whole Swift Wind and Adora miscommunication seemed a bit unnecessary, and Swift Wind pissed me off more than usual. I think these books definitely need to be edited better - a couple of the mistakes make it seem like the author didn’t even read it a second time. it was a fun read overall. don’t know why Tracey West described Catra and Adora as having a “sister-like bond” after that dance at Princess Prom but whatever
This one was a decent read, but it felt like nothing happened or was resolved at the end. It felt like an unnecessary chapter that didn't need to be included in any capacity.
I am of two minds about not only about this new series, but about these books. I realize that it is being presented in a different way, for a new generation, and that is fine. I also will say that there are some wonderful ideas, and lessons, being imparted having to do with things like teamwork, friendship and solving problems. What bothers me is the attitude, and the way the characters interact with each other. The Swift Wind in this story had an ego the size of Etheria, which is not in keeping at all with the character I knew growing up. Many of the Princesses were either extremely childish, or very petulant. The whole tone of the book, in that regard, was very off putting.
What I did like about this particular installment in the series was the Island of Magical Creatures. The idea reminded me of a mix of Unicorn Island and Beast Island, but all the animals on it were so creatively and imaginateively drawn as characters. That was the most exciting part of the story for me. I liked how the animals had a society of their own, and would work together to live side by side and help each other. Treeleaf and Winda were my favorites. I hope we get to see more of them in the future.
A lot of what I loved about the original She-Ra was the attitude of the characters. They seemed, for the most part, to genuinely love and care about each other. They did whatever they could, whenever they had to, to help each other and support one another. Swift Wind and She-Ra's relationship especially was so full of love and friendship. The episode For Want of a Horse especially highlighted this, and when she freed him from the Horde Ship, their reunion was so touching. A lot of that feeling and emotion seems to be missing from this new series, and to me, that is a loss.
I do look forward to more installments, and I hope the tone improves somewhat.
