From the New York Times bestselling author who brought us The Littlest Elf comes a sweet new Halloween story filled with gentle spooky fun and one adorable little witch friend! In this companion to The Littlest Mummy , Mae the Mummy's friend Wilma is the littlest witch in the Spooky Woods. But even though she knows the flying routine by heart, Wilma just isn't able to fly yet. Will Wilma be able to find a way to participate in the broom-flying fun, or is the littlest witch still too little? With adorable Halloween stickers!
The Littlest Witch tells the story of Wilma, who is the smallest witch in her community. She'd like to fly in the broom-flying demonstration, and she knows the routine perfectly... but try as she might, she just can't keep up with the bigger witches. As she moves through the community offering assistance to the other witches, her small size keeps sabotaging her efforts. Finally, she has to admit that she's just too small. But on the day of the broom-flying demonstration, something goes wrong... and it turns out that, with the help of her mummy friend, she's the only one who can fix it.
The message here is that, even if you might not measure up physically, you can have other strengths that are just as important. I like the way Wilma is empowered to take charge and set things right with her ingenuity, preparation, and knowledge.
The illustrations are quite cute here. There's really nothing scary to look at, so it's a very gentle Halloween sort of story. (It seems that Mae the mummy previously appeared in her own story. If it's anything like The Littlest Witch, then it might be worth taking a look at.)
Overall, this is a strong Halloween picture book with lovely illustrations and a nice message. Recommended to those who like books about little witches who use their smarts to overcome their seeming disadvantages.
Wilma was the littlest witch in the Spooky Woods, and although she was determined to participate in the annual Halloween broom-flying demonstration, she found that her arms and legs were just too short to do the spins properly. Her efforts to help other witches with various Halloween preparations were similarly unsuccessful, leaving her feeling very down, until she ran into her friend, Mae the mummy. Then, when the director of the broom-flying demonstration went missing, Wilma was able to step into her shoes, saving the day and proving that although she was little, she did indeed have something to contribute...
One of a number of related paperback picture-books from author Brandi Dougherty about the 'littlest' member of various communities - other titles include The Littlest Pilgrim and The Littlest Elf - The Littlest Witch features a sweet, winsome little witchy story, and cute artwork. The character of Mae the mummy also appears, in a starring role, in The Littlest Mummy. This story, and the series to which it belongs, will have great child appeal, as many children will be able to identify with the feeling of being too young to contribute to group activities. The positive, upbeat conclusion of the story here will offer such readers/listeners reassurance, and the page of stickers included at the rear will add another element of fun. Witchy picture-books are a pet project of mine, so I am grateful to my friend, La Coccinelle, for bringing this one to my attention! Recommended to picture-book readers looking for sweet, rather than scary Halloween fare, and to any child readers who has felt sad about being the youngest or littlest of the group.
Wilma the witch is so excited to participate in the broom flying demonstration for the Halloween Bash this year. However, things don't go as planned when she realizes she is still too little to hold onto the broom and perform all of the tricks. So, Wilma sets off to find other ways to help make the Halloween Bash perfect.
She tries to help her sister, her aunt, and other witches, but instead, she makes things worse. Feeling upset, she runs into her friend Mae who is in the same boat. Even though they weren't able to help with the Halloween Bash this year, they can still go together and have fun. But when the conductor for the broom flying demonstration is missing, it's up to Wilma to save the evening.
THE LITTLEST WITCH is a story about friendship and never being too little to help. Even though things didn't go as planned, Wilma still found a way to be helpful and she couldn't have done it without her mummy friend Mae. Thanks to Wilma, the Halloween Bash is a success. There are also stickers in the back of the book that my daughter loved.
I would recommend this to fans of Halloween, witches, friendship, and those who are upset about being littler than others.
{My thoughts} – Wilma is a small witch and she is having trouble finding her place in the new Halloween celebration. It is quite similar to the situation that was happening to Mae her mummy friend in the book The Littlest Mummy.
Wilma goes from family member to family member trying to find her place. She doesn’t have a whole lot of luck. On the day of the celebration both Wilma and Mae figure out what they need to do in order to be helpful during the celebration.
This book is well done and it helps to show that even if you are little, you still have the potential to be an extremely beneficial helper. I look forward to reading more books in this series in the future.
I’m certainly not the biggest admirer of this picture-book. If you have to literally spell out the 'moral of the story' in the end, I don’t think it’s a good book to start with. On top of this, the picture-book is unnecessarily long and too wordy — takes away half of the magic.
This book is part of a whole series of "Littlest" characters. Our Littlest Witch, Hazel learns that everyone is important and can contribute. When the bigger, experienced witches flew off on the brooms, Hazel & her fiend discovered what needed to be done for the community. Enjoy.
