A brand new, fun filled chapter book series that answers the What if Frozen's Elsa went to regular school? It's Winter Break at Hilltop Academy and Lina couldn't be more excited. With time off from school, Lina's parents say it's all right for her best friend, Claudia, to come up to their cloud palace for a sleepover (as long as she double pinkie-swears never to tell the royal family secret!). Claudia can't wait to see what it's like to actually be a real princess! But she soon learns that all the stuffy palace protocol isn't nearly as fun as it sounds. The girls just have to get out and play! Claudia suggests they go down to the ground and have some fun with Lina's winter magic. They have a blast sledding and skating in the snow until an actual winter blizzard moves in. The girls are stuck on the ground, lost in the storm. They will have to get resourceful, be brave, work together - and use Lina's magic in a creative way - if they are going to find their way out.
Christina Soontornvat grew up behind the counter of her parents’ Thai restaurant in a small Texas town with her nose stuck in a book. She is very proud of both her Thai and her Texan roots, and makes regular trips to both Weatherford and Bangkok to see her beloved family members (and eat lots and lots of Thai food!). Christina is the author of the fantasy middle grade series, The Changelings, and the early chapter book series, Diary of an Ice Princess. Her forthcoming books include the middle grade fantasy, A Wish in the Dark, and All Thirteen, a nonfiction account of the Thai Cave Rescue.
In addition to being an author, Christina holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a master’s degree in Science Education. She spent a decade working in the science museum field, where she designed programs and exhibits to get kids excited about science. She is passionate about STEM (science, technology engineering, and math), and loves learning new things. She lives in Austin, Texas with her husband, two young children, and one old cat.
Fabulous second adventure with Lina and Claudia (and Gusty too!), and I'm obsessed with Great-Aunt Eastia! Without giving anything away, I loved the girls' solution incorporating Lina's magic and Claudia's science skills to solve their snowy problem, and want to make one of my own!
"I really like how this book was illustrated this book because their outfits are so pretty. The girls are usually wearing pink and blue dresses and the boys wore gray and white." -Cadee, age 9
Have you ever planned on having the perfect sleepover but then something goes wrong? Princess Lina is over-the-top excited when she finds out her best friend, Claudia, gets to spend their winter break at her cloud castle. She has everything planned out - extra blankets and pillows, flashlights and spooky stories, popcorn and pizza. What Lina didn't expect is her Great Aunt Eastia to be at her house at the same time. Great Aunt Eastia grew up in a time when princesses were supposed to be princess-like. Instead of pizza they had Aunt Eastia Turnip Winter soup. Instead of watching a movie, they had to play boring board games. And when Lina used her powers to turn the ballroom into an ice skating rink, her aunt complained that it was too cold. Lina's perfect sleepover was turning into a disaster. When Lina finds out that her dad is taking the plane to go down to the ground to go grocery shopping, Lina has the idea of sneaking onto the plane and turning a small area into a winter wonderland where they can go sledding. That will make up for a sleepover gone wrong, right? Things are going great until a giant blizzard is heading straight for them. Will Lina and Claudia get lost in the blizzard? Will they be able to find their way back to the plane before her dad leaves? Or will this be the final straw with her Aunt Eastia? Don't miss this precious second installment of Diary of an Ice Princess.
Christina Sonntornvat has a winner with her early chapter books. Her main character is a princess with magical powers, she lives in a cloud castle, she has family that supports her, and a best friend! What else could you want? These books are fantastic for kids who are just beginning to read chapter books. Make sure to grab your copy today!!
Lina is super excited that her best friend Claudia is going to sleep over at her family's castle during the school break. But she's also nervous. She's never had Claudia over to spend the night and she's worried about making everything perfect. And that gets even more challenging when her Great-Aunt Eastia shows up for a visit at the same time. Can Lina make sure Claudia has a good time?
Lina learns a little lesson about listening to others about what they prefer and chilling out on her perfectionistic tendencies in this story. The lessons and situations are relatable even if Lina and Claudia's adventures and misadventures are a little fantastical. I love that Lina's mom's family has touches of Thai culture mixed in with their magical abilities. And when's the last time you saw a story about an Asian girl and African American girl who are best friends? A nice little multicultural set of characters, relatable issues, and fun weather magic mixed in to create a great series. The plot in this was resolved a teensy bit fast for my tastes, but I think it was more due to the page limits of the book and target audience. It still works out. Recommended to lower fantasy fans, friend story fans, and multicultural cast fans.
Notes on content: The girls are in a potentially perilous situation but it works out ok.
Lina is back and this time she's invited her best friend Claudia to her palace in the sky for a 3-day sleepover. What could possibly go wrong? Everything! First Lina's great aunt Eastia, who hates the cold and expects Lina to act like a poised princess, shows up. Then the girls get reprimanded for coating the ballroom floor with ice and sliding across it in the name of science. Maybe things will start to look up if Lina and Claudia sneak away to go sledding? Fans of the first book in the series will enjoy reading about Lina's adventures and may even learn some science concepts along the way. Simple illustrations sprinkled throughout the text and a diary format will make this short chapter book appeal to a lot of readers.
Disaster strikes for Lina when she gets to have her best friend sleep over for 3 days, but her critical Great-Aunt is there messing up their fun. Only when the plan she concocted to get away and have fun puts them in danger does her great aunt's words start to ring true. A fun fantasy story, with a Thai main character (and author), that has an important lesson about keeping your promises, thinking of others, and listening to the wisdom of elders. Loved it!
I finally convinced her to read the second in the Diary of an Ice Princess Series, Frost Friends Forever! I think she knew how much I wanted to continue with the series and she kept picking something else to spite me. But once we started reading, she really enjoyed it.
In this book Lina and her best friend Claudia are having a sleepover, except for the first time it’s a Lina’s house. Lina is so excited to have her friend at her castle in the sky and plans a whole bunch of magic activities for them to do. But when her Great Aunt Eastia shows up, her perfect sleepover is in jeopardy.
I think what I love most about these books is that even if it’s about a princess with magical powers, Lina is so normal and her problems are still relatable. It’s great seeing Lina’s friendship with Claudia and how they work together to solve their problems. We both enjoyed this one and I can’t wait to continue the series!
Lina, the ice princess, who lives in the clouds, has her best friend Claudia come over for a sleep over in her cloud palace for the first time. She has all kinds of magical snow activities planned, but then her strict Aunt shows up, and her Aunt cannot stand the cold. Of course, Lina tries to sneak out for magical snow fun anyway.... which leads to a blizzard of trouble.
Easy chapter book. I think many students would like this and relate to the sleepover plans. Magic and princess who tries to fit in with her non-magical friend. Cute artwork and pictures of her notepads will appeal. Interest K-2.
A fun instalment in a series where you don't necessarily have to read the first book to enjoy it (though it is sequential). Themes: grandparent visit, following the rules, snow safety, and having a friend sleep over for the first time.
Lina and her best friend sneak out for some snow magic and disobeying a great aunt who wants her to be proper. Of course there is trouble, but also some science. Nice that the 2nd in the series isn't a total rehash of the first.
In this second book Lina and Claudia are going to have a sleepover at Claudia’s house. Then Claudia says that she has to go on a road trip to drop off her brother at college so they can’t do a sleepover. Lina says that she can go to her house in the clouds and a lot of stuff happens.
Still a very good read
