So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours.
It’s a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn’t belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.
In a dangerous world where magic is real and people can level up and gain classes, Erin Solstice must battle somewhat evil Goblins, deadly Rock Crabs, and hungry [Necromancers]. She is no warrior, no mage. Erin Solstice runs an inn.
Restarted reading Vol4 from the beginning on 01/4/2020 01/04-07/17/2020 - It took fooooooooorever to read KofD POV. 07/17-24/2020 - Read 4/5 of Vol4 & finally finished it. =D
- Irony: It took more effort & time to read the King of Destruction POV at the start than the rest of Vol4. Technically, I should like KD a lot but I don't care for the way he is portrayed within the story.
- Most of the characters or portions that I don't enjoy reading as much tend to feel like parts that are not as well drawn out or the ideas were not presented well. That's easy to do when there are a lot of ideas floating around and trying to make it's mark on the page.
- Concepts are wide ranging and that gets 4.5 Stars. However, execution is how a story unfolds and that is an inconsistent, lumpy ride of rises and falls. Plus, there are still various errors that were not caught and still in the chapters.
- Tom the Clown: Loved the idea for him and the brainstorming behind it but the actual chapters are more rough than polished.
- In this Volume, I really enjoyed Erin, the Gold teams that are staying at the Inn and most of the Antinium the most.
- While not all writing experiments/style trials work well, the way the Antinium Wars and the various character POVs was cool. It was a nice way of showing off new aspects or giving a bit of insight into various POVs. Most of them were minor side characters.
- A whole lot happened in this one! Way more than Vol1-3. Off to start Vol5.
This series is one of the best I've ever read. The introduction of characters full of such depth and diversity you want to keep reading about them. An abundance of subplots that fit seamlessly into the whole. There was also a greater understanding of the various races and their history giving us a more complete picture.
There are so many great things and characters that I want to mention, but there just isn't the space. But please give Relc, the Liscore Drake guard we love so much, his wish of making his Relc Punch into a real Skill. I adore the new addition to volume 4, the Unseen Emporer. Please keep us abreast of his empires growth. And last, but definitely not least, more Toren the skeleton. Highly recommended series found for free on the authors site. You won't regret reading this, just the lack of enough hours in the Day to read more of this amazing story.
So good but oooooh so long and they are only getting longer. This is by far the darkest ending of any of the books so far. Now for a small break to finish off a small pile of library books before moving on to Vol 5.
The only reason this book isn't a 5 star is because Erin's POV wasn't around much. I get why it wasn't, but it was a huge disappointment considering how much I adore her character. It's hard to say who the main characters are in this book because there are many. Some show up for brief periods and others for longer periods. The story is definitely getting more complicated and a bit harder to follow. However, that doesn't stop me from loving this book and getting all the enjoyment out of it I can. I'm sitting here so upset because I haven't bought the rest of the series yet and will have to wait! This series is intense. There are a lot of moving parts, but it's been worth the read. I'll probably only be able to get to volume 5 or 6 before the end of the year and so many more to go. Book 4 is a good one with lots of complications. Ryoska is still one of my favorites, along with Erin. The goblins antics like in other books made me smile.
Book 3 had me almost lose my interest in the series, luckily book 4 set its hook back into me!
I loved the backstory of Pisces and Ceria! Their time at the magic academy" Seema to have bored some people, but I adored it. While, like quite some other moments in the series, it felt a bit too ... easy? However I do love me some training / school episodes in my fantasy, so it was right up my alley anyway.
I was so here for the Pisces Backstory and also him being great at kissing. There is so much happening again with so many different characters and their stories. The Wandering Inn is at this point definitely one of the great temporary fantasy works out there!
This volume keeps going strong and builds on the things i have grown to love from volume 1,2 and 3. We got some very cool insight into the free Antinium and their history / motivation, especially they have diverged from what the former Centenium and the remaining hives believe they should be doing . The goblin arcs showcased their brutal lifestyle and (again) the contrast of a normal dwarf / hob versus the mountain hall faction made for great reading.
A lot of fun to had with the new characters introduced, and again the Antinium stand strong. Torens new arc is splendid and him actually just interacting with someone without stabbing them to death is nice. The gold rank crews really grew on me, such a fantastic addition to the Inn! Feels like the batshit adventure crew archetype got covered really well.
However i think my favorite parts of this volume is threefold, Ryokas fae mishaps and the ice cold contrast we get from the fae vs everyone else, the Wistram days and the backstory for Prisces and Ceria , cant wait to see what happens with Amerys (there was some heavy foreshadowing i feel). But i think the strongest part of the book for me was the Doctor, very harrowing, hit like a truck and fantastic reading.
The were parts i was not a great fan of, at times it felt like Erin stagnated a bit, we do get some exmachna for this when she explains her "airhead" act, but still. The literal beach ending for the Doctor felt a bit off as well , but if anyone deserves a break its her!
At last, long live King Flos.

Again, there are a few things like spelling mistakes and minor errors.
9.11.2022 I think it could be edited a tad, partially for length and partially for melodrama. There also seems to be an aversion to words that people might have to look up? I'm reminded of the fact that... I don't really like anyone over the other characters, or see anyone worthy of admiration, apart maybe from Geneva. I'm curious about the changes that might be in the edited versions but until print versions come out...
Despite certain negative events I feel like this is a mostly optimistic series. Which doesn't seem realistic?
It doesn't make me laugh hysterically like other books have.
I know I shouldn't feel sucker-punched like this at the end of the novel, but here I am, gobsmacked and shook.
A little description of the book as a whole: Mostly we've got a good amount of comfort food here. Erin especially. I'm really enjoying the errant skeleton and our baby goblin lord, too, but here's the strange bit: When we get to the full, or some might say, exhaustive, recounting of the second great war, I imagined that a lot of readers might start getting sleepy or something. To me, I was engrossed in it and loved every second. We got a fairly dry recounting of great past events, but it's fascinating to see how so many of the characters who were IN that war are listening or re-reading the account on the eve of ANOTHER great war. Their reactions, recollections, and us getting so many pieces of the big story all at once was pretty damn fantastic to me.
And then, because we all knew this was just the calm before the storm, the actual battle was rather mind-blowingly good. The scale was great. And Silvertail? Hats off to this guy. Seriously. My new favorite character in this already impressive series.
Now, it's rather interesting to see a series focus so much on healing and socializing and becoming better people smack you on the back of the head with an extremely competent and moving battle (several, actually) that is rife with hate and desperation. It is SURPRISING.
I think this is where I start to see the series as getting a bit closer to a WoT successor. Not quite yet, perhaps, but I'm becoming seriously impressed. Now, thanks to this novel, I have nothing but the smell of popcorn with yeast on it. And yes, it IS quite tasty. It's a wonderful bit of synesthesia.
Personal note: If anyone reading my reviews might be interested in reading my own SF, I'm going to be open to DM requests. I think it's about time I get some eyes on them.
17.8 hours. That's how long it takes to move forward from the last moment of the last book. Literally. Actually. This book is 50% flashback. When I read this section of the book myself, I mostly just skimmed this story. I very much didn't care about the exact circumstances of pices and ceria's rift, and I certainly didn't care why montressa hated pices so much. It doesn't matter. It doesn't add anything to the story. It might even take something away from it.
And that's my main problem with the wandering inn in general. The author lacks focus and spends far, far too much time exploring the lives and circumstances of side characters. The whole Wistram arc could have been the basis for a decent stand alone "side" book. It could have even been a decent one, but it's not. Not enough meat to stand alone, and far, far, far too much for a flashback that's only tangentially relevant to anything.
Some day, I hope that pirate aba hires a real editor who's willing to chop up and reorganize this monster into 4-6 parallel series with the off side book so that you can actually read each story straight through. Then, I hope they can do the same thing to the audiobooks and that it isn't overly cringy to string together the disperate pieces, because Im pretty darn sure that nobody else will ever be willing to re-record them. Maybe he can get them done one at a time.
Overall this series has been pretty great and I love the main Erin story line... I’ve spent over a week devouring the whole thing (well bk 1-5)
But around book 3 I noticed I’d started skipping entire chapters because the characters, arc or side-storyline just bore me or depress me. Hogwarts (Wisteria? sorry forgotten the name of the magic academy) - yep skip.
Not sure if it’s a reflection on the quality of the writing (I did it in game of thrones when grrm randomly introduced a bunch of irritating characters) or more a reflection of my headspace..
The series started off a bit bubbly/lighthearted lit-RPG (which I loved) but it’s going over to the dark side big time. I think a lot of people would love that - but it’s bumming me out too much to carry on. Sorry!
These are big big books and free to read via pirateaba’s blog, but I think better read in the way it’s published - one chapter at a time - rather in the dense chunk of reading. (My husband barely saw me for a week)
Hope pirateaba publishes to get it out there more (maybe fixing the first few chapters of book 1) Definitely deserves more attention!
I hope this is the only volume of The Wandering Inn that I feel I need award one less star. The overall series is truly magical: mesmerizing, outstanding character-driven story, stupendous world building and "class" leveling, and just really well-written web serial, typos and all.
In Volume 4, though, we open with a series of long chapters on King Flos, which really put me off and bogged me down. I spent months on volume four because of the emphasis on wars/horrors...I read the Erin and Inn chapters speedily and loved them. I do hope the talented author revises this volume when prepping for Kindle and later, Audible. Also...I was extremely unhappy with the author's decision in the end...but no spoiler here.
Overall, I highly recommend the series, but was terribly bogged down in this volume. That's just me...but it took me over four months of before-sleep reading (from the web, on my kindle), and that just shouldn't be the case. Maybe I will feel differently in the long distant day that I re-read it.
I like the book I really do but I just feel like there are so many characters that I just kinda goes off course sometimes. I am enjoying the story of the two main characters. I mean they all are the main characters but I feel like Erin and Ryoko are the two most important characters and almost everyone else's stories are just not that interesting. There are just a lot of filler and unimportant things being told.
I always find myself reading books with multiple view points and always end up hating but it can't be helped because there are so many books like that. But still when I'm so invested in a character I want to know about thats going to happen next like right away. Not jumping from here to there then back to here you know what I mean.
Any ways will continue to read to next book because its a good book. I can't wait until the fight starts like actual fighting. Just praying that Erin and Ryoko gets super strong soon.
That pisces got pushed away by the academy was expected. But that ceria would not be friends with him with her only two reasonz that he didn't tell her and that he was a necromancer felt off. He stood by her at the beginning which she was thankful for. But once he had the stickma of necromancer she didn't want anything to do with him because, they are bad, just like others think of half-elf's... She complains that he always kept secrets. But the first secret he kept she ran away from him so it's not like she gave him a chance to trust her with more secrets. Or if he would she would probably run away again seeing her past reaction

I'm always waiting for the next one in the series I have really enjoyed this series and I read that #8 is in the works so I plan to read them all. Imagine you wake up in an RPG world that has all the characters from the different games. You have to level up, restore your manna and use healing potions. Yes there is magic and you have to level up in magic also. You also have the bad creatures that you have to fight or out smart, some can be tamed in a manner of speaking. There's some off the wall characters and they all speak English for the most part.
The story is good and solid and all is well until we meet a new character that is doing something far far away from the main story.
Most of the time these new characters cross paths with the main characters (if there even any "Main" ones at the moment), but so far these encounters are mildly interesting at best.
I think that 15% of this book was about boring things and the rest was interesting, so all in all it was good.
3/5 if you are still here, keep going, it's worth the read.
This series will be the end of me. Some parts I loved, some parts I dreaded. I started last year and it's sooooo long that I'm starting to fear that I won't have time to read anything else in 2024 again. BUT I love going back to innworld and reading about Erin and Ryoka. This volume was following too many characters, that there was not enough time spend in Liscor. Fingers crossed I will eventually catch up to the 9th volume cause these books were not written to be binged on
Parts of this book are almost like novellas. One follows Rags, the goblin. Another is a flashback with Seria and Pisces. The rest of the book follows the main timeline and main characters. But it all ties together. It's all part of the epic scope. What a large world!
These are addictive. I'm reading the next one now.
I really love this series. It spends all the time that you could want (and more) to develop characters and build this world. I don’t love all the story lines but I appreciate the commitment. So much of this series is slice-of-life so the pacing is so different than what I normally read. It is tremendously refreshing.
I really LOVED all the Wistrim parts of this. It did feel jarring to have so much of that inserted into a book that then went back to focusing on other things, but I was so glad we finally got some significant backstory on some of these characters.
Erin CONTINUES to be deeply annoying in every possible way.
Sooooo good! I'm glad to have gotten back to the main focus of our story. I love Erin to bits and she's back to her old self. I didn't even mind Rypka's part that much either since the events happening to get was interesting even though I hate her narrative most of the time.
This book builds on the rich world that has been developed over the past volumes. I enjoy how vast this world is but how pirateaba doesn't bombard you with all the information and slowly builds the world.
Highlights of this book are the emperor timeline and the building of his skills. As well as the wistrim chapters where "two mages" start their schooling.
The more traditional Fantasy elements of the story really shine in this volume, as well as the secondary characters really rising to the forefront. The emergence of really unique classes and magical powers also serves the story well.
I loved it a lot! I couldn't put down this volume. It never got sad for too long, and the humor was top notch. Loved the new characters, loved how often we got new perspectives, and I can't wait to read on.
Once you start it's hard to stop, although this one could use a bit more structure/goal to work towards. At the end of the volume it still feels like things are getting into place instead of reaching some conclusions.
With so many characters meeting each other, reunions and first introductions, it was exciting to see how the characters played off one another. I loved the flashback chapters too. A very weird ending gives some hints to the future. I hope I don't have to wait too long for #5.
