In 1833, Bernadette, a live-in helper on a farm, comes to New England for good schooling. She befriends Miriam, a student at Prudence Crandall's school for black girls, but the community destroys the school.
An orphan, Bernadette, moves from her home in Ohio to Connecticut to attend a private school with the family of the brother of the people she'd stayed with in Ohio. She doesn't ever attend the school because the mistress had started letting black girls in. She becomes embroiled in the controversy and questions her role as a woman in the early 1800's.
