After witnessing the death of her friend, Hazel is left with pain that threatens to consume her. She goes to Northwood to be with her sister while she heals. When she arrives, she finds work in a bakery in hopes of keeping her mind off the memories that won't leave her alone.
While she works through the feelings of guilt and anguish that have taken over her life, Hazel finds friendship with the bakery owner's grandson, who is dealing with burdens of his own.
Is it possible for Hazel to let herself love, even when she doesn't feel she deserves the chance to be happy?
*The Bakery is the fifth book in teen author, Morgan Dawson's Carter Sisters Series - Professionally formatted and edited for publishing.*
I love the Carter Sisters series that is a heartfelt and emotional story. Each book in this series will read as a stand-alone, but I would encourage you to read each one in their written order because it does follow a timeline. It takes the reader on a journey of family, friends, loss, new beginnings, acceptance, and adventure. Ms. Morgan Dawson has wowed me, an avid reader and reviewer with her insight into the Carter Sisters and the hardships of life. She has spun five amazing stories that have wonderful characters and kept me turning the pages. I have purchased each book, and couldn’t wait to read them as soon as they released. I have bragged to others about her talent as an author, one that I know will take her to greater places—I want to join her on that journey.
The youngest Carter daughter, Hazel, is struggling with the accidental death of her best friend, Lillie. She is beyond mourning, she is in depression, and the sadness is not only affecting her but her family. The nightmares of the accident will have her crying out in her sleep and even screaming awake the household. It is decided that maybe if Hazel goes to visit Lydia in Northwood, Kansas, she can start to heal.
“I have realized the most unsafe place to be is in your own mind.”
The plot will have Hazel taking the train from Nebraska to Kansas to spend time with Lydia and be there for when she has her baby. She has missed her sister, and they enjoy catching up. Oliver’s sister Ada lives with them, and she and Hazel become fast friends. Ada is a kind and understanding about the nightmares and works with Hazel through them. Ada will find a stray dog, and it is agreed upon to bring her home, naming her Mollie. The little dog is like therapy for Hazel, but the accident still haunts her.
“I don’t blink. Just watch the bright orange flame flickering. Shrinking. Then growing. I realize that’s what I’ve been feeling lately. The shrinking and then growing. I can find brief moments of joy and happiness, but then the sadness and memories grow and come back to me. It’s on repeat.”
When the owner of the bakery, Mrs. Taylor, is hurt, it is suggested that Hazel help out, especially since she has a passion for baking. It is healing for her. Mrs. Taylor’s grandson, Sam, comes by often, even helping out while his grandmother is recovering. The friendship that develops between Hazel and Sam is sweet and eventually will be another step in the direction of healing.
“Don’t you wish we could go back to the days before everything changed. It just hard getting used to the change I guess.”
Sam and Hazel will start spending more time together, going on picnics, out for walks, and to ice cream parlors. When they take a picnic that will have them crossing a bridge over the river to get to a beautiful field, Hazel will panic, but she is honest and tells Sam what happened with Lillie. He doesn’t push her but lets her know he is there for her, and with his help, she will cross the bridge. Together they share bits and pieces of their childhood, and dreams of their future, falling in love with each other. Can Hazel make Northwood her home? This is the town her mother grew up in, meeting people like Mrs. Taylor, having her grandmother here and Lydia makes it possible. Falling in love with Sam allows her to accept the past and look forward to the future.
“Hazel, I like you because of who you are. I wouldn’t turn away from you, just because of some lingering effects of something you couldn’t control. I like you because you haven’t given up, and have kept going, despite all the pain you were in.”
The story includes letters sent between Hazel and her family, and she will find herself caught between two places as she and Sam are falling in love. She misses her family, but her heart is pulling her in a different direction. It is an emotional tale of dealing with the death of a friend, making peace with the situation, moving forward in life, and understanding that life does go on and knowing that your friend would never wish for you to grieve for them, but instead would want you to live your life to the fullest.
“Here in Northwood, I found someone who helped me across that first bridge, and ever since then, each day has gotten better. And while I know I will forever miss Lillie; I can now say that her memory lies peacefully in my heart. And a happy memory at that.”
It is so hard to believe a 15 year old girl wrote this beautiful family-centered book! The lives of ordinary families and the settings in the 1800’s—all my favorite reads other than my Bible. I loved every minute of it. She is such an inspiration and has the imagination and gift of telling a story with such feeling. I am looking forward to reading more of her books.
Morgan Dawson continues to develop as a writer. I enjoyed this story the most. Dealing with depression is addressed with care. The author always develops her characters. Last stories are always woven into the new story.
Book 5, wish there were more sisters to write about. This story isn't just about Hazel working in a bakery, it is about crossing bridges, moving on, believing in oneself and finding love.
