Crown Agent Jev Dharrow’s good dwarf friend Cutter is missing, as is the city’s master gem cutter. Jev doesn’t know who would want them, but he’s determined to find out. He hopes his fellow agent, Zenia, can help him locate the missing dwarves. Even though she rejected his offer of a romantic relationship because of their status differences, they have become good friends, and she has years of experience finding criminals. But this kidnapping is anything but simple. Jev and Zenia find themselves entangled in a snarled plot that threatens the entire kingdom while making them realize their true feelings for each other. If they can’t rescue the dwarves, deter an invasion, and stop an explosive plot to destroy half the city, they may lose everything they love. Including each other.

Let’s try to make this moderately quick and painless for once, shall we?

Okay, so this installment clearly suffers from second book syndrome. Yes, I know it’s the third book in the series, but there’s no such thing as third book syndrome, and if there is, it probably isn’t the same thing as second book syndrome, and it’s second book syndrome that this third book in this series is suffering from, so there and stuff.

Indeed it is. Thank for your unfailing support, Spockie dearest.

Quite sorry to report I am that this installment not nearly as joyfully entertaining as the previous ones is. “Why the shrimp is that?” you most obligingly ask. Because this, I most agreeably reply:

First, the plot is thinner than an anorexic razor shell, and slower than an anaemic barnacle. Also, I finished the book only three days ago and had to look at the blurb to remember what it was about. Not an overwhelmingly positive sign, methinks.

Second, said fairly inexistent plot is so fairly inexistent that Buroker had to fill in the gaps with, you know, something and stuff. To try and give some much-needed substance to her story and stuff. Only that the something in question is lovey dovey crap . And not the tolerably tolerable, nearly not allergy-inducing kind, either. Oh no, that would have been way too crustacean-friendly. This here is the immature-as-fish-MCs-act-like-sexually-repressed-hormonal teenagers kind of lovey dovey crap. (The fact that said MCs are well in their thirties—quite the ancient creatures they are—only makes this slightly a lot more ridiculous and stuff.)

You know something is really wrong with your lovey dovey crap when Silly Snowie gets so freaked out she runs the fish out of the forest.

Third, Buroker’s trademark ha-ha-ha banter and dialogues are there but they a) much like the most frolicsome scalloped hammerhead, seem to be nearly extinct and b) are kinda forced as shrimp and sorta formulaic as krill. Which is quite a little disappointing, if you ask me.

Fourth, because the reasonably delicious secondary cast of characters is not nearly as present as in previous installments, ergo less opportunities for potentially ha-ha-ha-ing banter and dialogues there are (QED and stuff). Well at least Rhi, the bo-wielding ex-monk and Whacker-Thumper Extraordinaire (WTE™), is around to provide some much needed entertainment and prevent the reader from falling into a deeper slumber than Sleeping Beauty Shrimpy. So I guess I can’t complain and stuff.

Okay, so this ↑↑ probably doesn’t sound Super Extra Titillating (SET™), but really, it’s not that bad. It’s just not very good, that is all. There’s the whole Dragon Tear Thingie (DTT™), which sounds promising enough. (Yes, I could tell you about it, but also yes, I feel uncharacteristically lazy as fish today, so I won’t. You are quite welcome.) And there are also lots of fluffy cuddly friendly pets like water golems and orcs and trolls and ogres and puny humans and well-endowed stags (don’t ask) and fairly voracious remote-controlled crocodiles (this is giving me ideas, just so you know). And then there’s talk of finger nails being ripped off, which is always a plus, if you ask me.

See, even Ernie agrees with me on this one.

Nefarious Last Words (NLW™): Bridge installment begone! Let’s go back to the Slightly Very Good Stuff (SVGS™), if you please, Ms. Buroker. I might somewhat unleash the crustaceans on you if you don’t. But hey, no pressure and stuff.

💌 Very Private Message to Jev and Zenia: please do everyone a favor and “start mating like overly libidinous orcs,” would you? We’d ALL be VERY glad if you did, methinks. Thank thee kindly in advance and stuff.

Book 1: Eye of Truth ★★★★
Book 2: Blood Ties ★★★★
Book 4: Elven Fury ★★★★
Book 5: Dragon Tear ★★★

[Pre-review nonsense]

Too much teenagey romancing *shudders*, not enough (choose all that apply):
a) Lively happenings
b) Joyous shenaniging (yes, that is a word)
c) Gleeful bantering

Full review to come and stuff.

Three and a half stars.

Cutter and Master Grindmor have gone missing, 500 dwarves are travelling to Korvann to settle as part of King Targyon's attempts to make the country less xenophobic now that the war with the elves has ended.

Jev and Zenia have to deal with office politics from the captain they effectively demoted, Jev also has to deal with gossip about his private life and fears that his father will arrange a marriage to a high born Zyndari woman.

I liked this but I didn't love it, maybe it's swords and sorcery fatigue from devouring three books in as many days, I felt we covered a lot of the same dithering about Jev and Zenia's romance as we did in the second book, just man up and marry her NOW. Also Zenia dragon's tear is so powerful and can do anything that it obviates the need for cunning or bravery, it's a get out of jail free card all by itself. Finally, after what felt like a very long time in the swamp the ending felt a bit rushed and I had lots of unfinished questions.

So, we still don't know what Zenia's dragon tear IS, we don't know who is writing Zenia the cryptic warnings (I suspect it's the dragon tear somehow), will Jev and Zenia ever get together, will Rhi find romance? I hope that some of these questions are answered in the next book.

Novel ketiga dari siri Agents of the Crown, bergenre fantasi+penyiasatan.

Typical book by this author. I enjoy her work. I’ve read most of her books. They have a good plot. The characters are talented and she compliments the main characters well with supporting characters. The dialog is smooth and easy. If you like a pleasant book with suspense, drama, mystery, friends and camaraderie, plus a little romance, this is definitely a book and a series for you. Strong female characters blend well with strong male characters. I enjoyed from the first page to the last.

Lindsay Buroker is on the top of my absolute favorite authors list. She consistently writes the best science fiction, steampunk, sci-fi romance (done under the pen name Ruby Lionsdrake) and fantasy. So now we come to her latest, Duty Bound, the third in her Agents of the Crown series and as wonderful as the prior two. This book (and series) once again show this author’s incredible talent. It’s stars Jev and Zenia certainly have an overwhelming pile to handle in their roles as Crown Agents, not just rescuing two dwarves (one of whim is Jev’s good friend and the city’s master gem cutter) but also deterring an invasion, stopping an explosive plot to destroy half the city and, oh yeah, somehow deal with a romantic attraction they have to each other. Fantastic stuff and a total reading pleasure. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

I cannot rave about this series as I did with The Emperor's Edge. Maybe this days is hard to concentrate in reading as I did. I probably read Covid-19 news too much. However I am grateful for the adventure. Jev is not the funniest but he's a nice type. I do like him. Lornish and Cutter reminds me too much of Lord of the Rings's characters but I want to know more of Lornish past. So, onto Elven Fury!

Another adventure

Crocodiles! Criminal guilds! Explosives! Threats of marriage! And fifty pounds of paperwork!

I enjoyed this one. Jev and Zenia barely manage to rescue their friends and save the city.

Magic, swords and roses

I stopped reading at more than 95% through it. I thought that the first two books had weaknesses but there was a lot to like too. I hoped that the glimpses of real people would develop into full portraits at least, they did.

The two main characters are just sexually repressed, self-deluded and reckless. Instead of facing responsibilities, challenging values or organizing their emotional houses, they whine about how unfair a life of privilege is (the noble) or how wonderful life would be if they could get sexed up by and married to a noble (the commoner). In both cases, the character isn't particularly choosy, which is OK but what's with the "love" bit.

It would read better if the noble spent a few ducats/crowns/whatever at a brothel and maybe even act like an adult and ten year veteran. Admitting that "I'm good with an arranged marriage" or get the finances in order and let the title pass to a more desperate candidate, would make sense to me. So far, it ain't happening. If the other co-captain would go out on some dates with a normal adult (not man-chlid and after putting on her big girl pants), put it out there that she's in the market for a serious relationship and also drown any sexist clown with an attitude, that would work for me. She doesn't.

The elves and dwarves are much more interesting individually and as a group. The orcs, ogres, dragons and others seem like they could be interesting (and maybe a little vicious, brutal or murderous but really who doesn't have flaws). As long as the major non-human characters stay consistent, the 2D quality of the cast would be OK except that the silliness of the romance overwhelms the better parts of the book.

At the end, it actually underscores the stupid decision making of the main human characters and turns the preceding high paced action into a setup for kisses and roses. Ugh!!! The series is a "romantic" fantasy, which is done as well as any other (I guess), if you're into that sort of thing.

Jev and Zenia are...well, I can't actually say they're settling into their new job. I mean, it's been one crazy thing after another since they first crossed paths and they've barely had time to study the handbook for agents (well, Zenia found some time, but Jev's almost a lost cause on that, isn't he?), but they are finding themselves smack-dab in the middle of everything.

Everything. Criminal underworlds. Kidnapped master gem cutters. Plots against the kingdom. A literal boatload of dwarves.

While all this is going on, Jev's trying to abide by Zenia's wishes and keep their relationship strictly professional. But, you know, lingering looks and accidentally admitting to some late night fantasies happen. Right? I mean, sometimes those things just slip out and once it's said it's not like it can be unsaid.

On top of all this, Zenia's dragon tear is massively powerful and...well, honestly, I don't think Zenia's the type to turn all power-mad or anything when she gets a taste of it, but that tear is far more than it seems. FAR MORE.

I'm not thrilled with the news Jev's cousin dumped on him at the end of the book, but I'm completely ready to see how he gets himself out of his situation. Completely. Onto the next book.

This is a review of the series.

I enjoy LIndsay's books. They are contain fantasy, action, mild romance and silly, lightweight dialogue. They aren't for people looking for serious, hardcore fantasy. The worldbuilding is never as in depth as some series. The characters are the main draw. Her females are strong in their own various ways. They contain a ragtag group of seemingly disparate characters that go together well anyway. They provide good escapist reading.

This series is no different. Her humor might not be for everyone so try out a sample. However, I like the silly and sarcastic dialogue and the lack of taking itself too seriously.

These characters seem to have no problem finding trouble. And not much trouble solving the problems. The elf is irritatingly elvish.

This is the third of the series of five in the Agents of the Crown series. Though this is not my normal reading material, this has been a very good set, and I am truly enjoying the read.

Though this could be read as a stand alone, there are so many events in the previous two volumes that are necessary for understanding it that it really should be read as a set.

The setting is in imaginary lands and in medieval times except for poetic license taken to add steam driven carts and ships, firearms, pistols, and rifles. In this volume, Zenia and Jev are agents of the crown who are trying to determine who had caused the deaths of the three sons of the king, cousins of the now new king, Targyon. There is fear that the new king is also targeted.

The setting is in a time where classes in the kingdom are prevalent. Along with the humans, there are dwarves, trolls, and elves present, along with magic. There is an honor code among the zyndar, the equivalent of the noble class, and there are those who break the codes. There is disdain for the "commoners" relative to class boundaries for their arranged and acceptable marriages. Jev's father will not allow him to marry Zenia, a commoner, but they are very much in love. Through the volumes, there is an underlying, subtle romance story that would reflect medieval times. Jev is afraid to say too much to Zenia for fear he may offend her and Zenia is afraid to say too much because she doesn't know his true feelings. She had told him of her vow to herself to be chaste until she is married, and he respects and honors that. The underlying love story does not detract from the action of the overall plot.

This is really a good series and I would recommend it.

I have to first say that I hated the ending, I knew an arranged marriage was going to happen for Jev, but to throw it in at the end of the book with no mention of how long we'll have to wait for book 4 is beyond frustrating. Also, I hope this book is leading to a major overhaul of society where the social constraints that forbid marrying a commoner and dictate that commoners need to grovel around the zyndar, because those people are so annoying.

Despite this, I really enjoyed the book. Cutter and Master Grindmor have gone missing. While investigating leads, Zenia and Jev come to believe that their disappearance may be far more troubling for the kingdom at large. There is a plot to overthrow mankind by the trolls.

Zenia learns more about the powers of her dragon tear, Jev deals with his stupid sense of responsibility as a zyndar, people treat Zenia like crap and his annoying and pathetic, but still somewhat nice ex fiance shows up.

As usual Lindsay Buroker has delivered another great book Duty Bound. I have loved all of Lindsay's books. I believe I own them all. I love her strong female leads such as Zenia, very capable on the outside but full of quivering nerves on the inside. And let's not forget the leading man, Jevlain Dharrow, an emotionally secure man who can except a strong female personality. And all the characters in the books who help make the stories the success they are. Keep em coming Lindsay, can't wait for the next book.

This is the third in the Agents of the Crown series, and once again follows our two main characters Zenia and Jev. Having just thwarted the attempt to kill the King, and uncovering those responsible for killing the King’s relatives, Jev and Zenia have now been tasked with a new challenge. They have to locate the Master Dwarf as she is still missing, and there is a very tight time limit, as the King has invited a steam ship full of Dwarves to the city, who are expecting to be met by the Master Gem Cutter or it will mean disaster. Jev’s friend Cutter is also missing, having gone looking for the Master Dwarf and her tools, and now having disappeared as well.
This is an interesting story, things are strained between Zenia and Jev, as Zenia decided at the end of book 2 that she would not date or be in a relationship with Jev due to his status as a Zyndar, and because he could not marry her due to her being a commoner. Whilst in books 1 and 2, both Zenia and Jev worked incredibly well together, as they ‘flirted’ around each other, but also got on with their roles, working in a strange synergy together, in this book, due to their strained relationship, their partnership does not work as well.
The two of them go off on separate adventures, Zenia working with Rhi more, and Jev working with Lornysh. It makes for an interesting story at times, and Buroker uses it to create some ‘amusing’ situations.
Duty Bound though is a story that is full of intrigue and adventure, but there is also a lot more at stake than is originally known, as several things are soon uncovered. Without giving too much away, the dynamic duo soon discover that if they do not find the Master Dwarf soon, and secure the friendship of the Dwarves, it could mean the end of the kingdom.
This book sees a lot of characters involved, from the various Temples, to the Elves and Dwarves, to the various criminal organisations, and some new characters as well.
This is an interesting book for our main characters, Zenia finds herself troubled and unsure of her decision not to date Jev, but knowing that she cannot possibly be able to marry him? She is caught up in the troubles of her past, worried about all the Single Mothers who have been abandoned by Zyndar after they get pregnant, as well as her own sorry excuse of a father, who was Zyndar who refused to both acknowledge her, or help her dying mother.
Meanwhile Jev is torn between his honour as a Zyndar, and the knowledge he must marry someone to carry on his lineage, but at the same time, consumed by the love he has for Zenia, and unable to let that go. Jev’s father further complicates things as he not only shows utter contempt for commoners, but also tries to organise an arranged marriage for him.
Meanwhile, the two of them desperately try and uncover what has happened to both of the Dwarves, as well as uncover who is trying to bring down the kingdom.
Buroker’s story telling is magical, with a beautifully crafted world, one that you get fully immersed into. There is so much detail in these stories, from the streets and the cities, to the Elvish garden that surrounds their Embassy, to the cities underground where some of the criminal organisations hide. Each of the locations is so intricately detailed and allows the reader to become completely lost in both this world and the story.
Duty Bound is a wonderful story, full of adventure, intrigue, and two broken hearts that are desperate for each other, as well as some exceptional characters and some of the typical humour we have come to expect from Buroker, this is a brilliant third part to what is an outstanding series. If you enjoyed the first two books in the series, then you will love book 3, it is absolutely worth the read (and I am already into book 4 as I write this!!!)
If you love a good Fantasy, then this series is for you!!

About 3.5 stars again; maybe a little more, so I rounded up.

Action-wise, book 3 centers on trying to find Cutter and Master Grindmor, while investigating the possibility of trouble from within and/or without, as the criminal guilds scheme, and other races (orcs? trolls? ogres?) may be trying to capitalize on and increase the human kingdom's lack of allies (since its recent rulers had been increasingly insular) ... and the two issues may be connected. A major section takes place in a swamp, so herpetophobics be warned. Ethical issues include the necessity of killing the enemy, even if not in a fair fight.

Relationship-wise, this volume focuses on Jev's unhappy sense of duty that keeps him from pursuing more of a relationship with Zenia, while Zenia is having her own second thoughts (especially after meeting Jev's one-time fiancee).

Magic-wise, Zenia continues to be surprised by how much the dragon-carved dragon's tear stone is able (and even troublingly eager) to do.

Style-wise, it's Lindsay Buroker: an entertaining, easy, light read. With Cutter missing, most of the teasing and wisecracks have to come from Rhi or Jev, though Zenia's trying to be less unapproachable. Maybe it was the gray weather today, but sometimes it felt a little flat or immaturely lame to me. Not to say that I don't still like the characters, just ... I got a smidge impatient.

Proofreading-wise, I only caught one missing comma, and a plural-possessive error that makes sound like ruminants: "[Jev] slammed a boot into one of his adversary’s stomachs."

I wish I were better at discussing books w/o verging on spoilers. Once again, the immediate crisis is resolved, in dramatic fashion. Personal matters take a step forward, but then the epilogue brings a new complication. I suspect book 4 will have more to do with elves, so maybe I'll finally get some of my answers about the cryptic Lornysh.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as its predecessors.

The main reason for this is that the will-they-won’t-they romantic relationship is growing tiring for me. Or, rather, the portrayal of it is. Jev and Zenia have valid reasons to not be together, and completely reasonable evidence that they should be together despite the odds. There relationship is real and understandable.... but completely irritating to read about sometimes.

Every single page seemed to have some comment about “I wish he would leave his arm around my shoulder” or “we can’t be together” or “I can’t give up my lands and people for her - as much as I want to” or... you get the gist. I didn’t need to be reminded of it in every single chapter how angsty they are about wanting to be together but not being able to. Forbidden love has never been my thing, but normally I can tolerate it. This time... it really started to grate my nerves and it distracted me from the fast paced action and other important plot lines.

I could look passed this flaw because everything else about this story is great. The plot is always interesting and compelling. The characters are flawed and real and likable (and there’s a bunch of them). I was invested in finding the dwarves, and the investigation went on in a believable fashion. This book had a lot more world building and opened up more potential story ideas for sure.

I would absolutely recommend this series, especially if you don’t mind forbidden relationships (because there’s a lot of emphasis on it, the only downside for me)

Overall: 4.5
Romance: Slow, slow, slow burn
Adventure: 4
Story: 5

Another great mystery adventure by Lindsay Buroker.

There is great relationship building in this, although I don't think we even get to see a single kiss in this book. Jev is as wonderful as always with his wit and humor, and I cannot wait to see them finally getting hitched by the end of the series.

The mystery leads us into some swampy areas with exciting twists. Zenia's tear is omnopotent and can do everything for her, including solve every mystery and conquer every city, yet we don't see Zenia using it on people she ought to, like Archmage Sashan, and holds back. That is probably because it is invincible and would ruin the plot. However, it would've been better for the story if it could only do things that dragons can do.

We get to see more of Lornysh, but not his good side. This grumpy elf has a violent streak and I suspect that the fourth book will reveal more of his past.

There are more fighting scenes and lots of killing in this book, which I didn't like.

This book introduced some more mystical creatures. We had some trolls and the introduction (though brief) of 500 dwarfs.

I was hoping that Lornysh's back story would come out more in this book. However I get the feel that will happen in the next book. Poor guy needs a friend, cutter and jev do seem to use him a lot 😬

Plus there have been definite hints he has crazy amounts of magical powers..

Jev is having a nightmare struggling with his duty and his heart where zenia is concerned.

Zenia has been giving some very mixed messages about whether they should date or not date. I mean logically their relationship is kinda doomed... However confronted with a wet shirted jev, 2 inches away it no wonder a girl can get confused.

All of this is happening while jev ex fiance is still sniffing ( that girl is up to something 😒)

THEN at the end he's now engaged 😮

I feel I should also mention the massive plot line of the trolls trying to kill the dwarf to get the kingdom.

Cute series so far. I'm loving the traditional/nerdy/fantasy going on. I sort of transitioned away from this after I quit playing everquest and stopped reading my old books. Once I had my stroke I just happened to start picking up different kinds of fantasy.sci-fi/pnr/UF books. I'm glad one of my favorite writers pointed me back to it. Now I want to go back and re-read old favorites.
I love her plots, characters, their relationships, and just about everything else she brings forth from her imagination.
Yeah, I know this review didn't talk much about what happened in the book and it was basically me fan girling, but I didn't write the review right after I read it and all I get now when I think of it are warm fuzzies and I love fan girling over her books....
I've enjoyed every one of her books I've read no matter the genre and believe anyone should give one a try.

The adventures of Jev Darrow and Zenia continue on this third volume of the "Agents of the Crown" series. After their last struggle which included dealing with the Elves and their embassy, Jev is not surprised the Ambassador has decided to leave town. But the timing of the leaving is really making it uncomfortable to him and the King.
To make things worse Cutter is missing and presumed kidnapped by the same people who took the Master Carver. Now the King has invited a delegation of Dwarfs and the fact the Master Carver is missing is going to be a huge issue. So Jev and Zenia find themselves without time to solve another major problem that threaten the Kingdom.
Love this series and the characters that keep expanding as we move along on it. Zenia and her new dragonstone make for a great team and joined by Jev seem to get into all the problems the Agents can ever handle. Fun read

Crown Agent Jev Dharrow’s good dwarf friend Cutter is missing, as is the
city’s master gem cutter. Jev doesn’t know who would want them, but he’s
determined to find out.

He hopes his fellow agent, Zenia, can help him locate the missing dwarves.
Even though she rejected his offer of a romantic relationship because of their
status differences, they have become good friends, and she has years of
experience finding criminals.

But this kidnapping is anything but simple. Jev and Zenia find themselves
entangled in a snarled plot that threatens the entire kingdom while making
them realize their true feelings for each other. If they can’t rescue the
dwarves, deter an invasion, and stop an explosive plot to destroy half the
city, they may lose everything they love. Including each other.
