Sam isn't really the party going type, but he tries to keep an open mind when his friend Bart drags him along to a raucous college party. And if nothing else, Sam's dream girl, Jodi, is expected to be there. If the party's half as wild as Bart is making it out to be, who knows what could happen?
But when an uninvited guest arrives, things quickly escalate out of control. And before long, there will be depravity unlike anyone has ever seen...
Let's face it, you don't expect a masterpiece with a title like CANNIBAL ORGY. At least, you shouldn't.
Lynne Hansen designed a great cover for this book and it was a free download...so, while I'm having trouble getting into the characters of the thriller I want to read, I decided to tackle this short book in a different genre. My hopes, after reading the blurb, was that it would be an amusing take on a silly idea. Oh boy, it was not.
For those who know me (or at least my reviews), it is obvious that I don't like to tear an author a new one if I didn't like the story. I try to stay objective and find something good about almost everything I read (unless I abandon it, in which case I don't review it), always keeping in mind that tastes differ and somebody is most likely trying to make a living from writing.
So, the best thing about this story was the cover - I have a lot of respect for Lynne's work. The story itself was...um, maybe best suited for the young college frat guys who likes to read about sex, blood, sex, tits, sex, parties and sex.
I'm not going to describe the story - read the blurb if you are interested. The writing of this story was absolutely juvenile - I was actually not making a joke about the college frat guys. If you want to make a drinking game out of it, take a shot every time hell breaks loose or somebody can't believe what is happening - it will get Keith Richards wasted. If you ever wondered how somebody with a broken ankle can swivel and repeatedly kick the rabid monsters while fighting off about a hundred of them with no weapon, this is the book for you. And, finally, if people break out in pus leaking, red blotches all around you, you don't have to wonder if they are okay. No, they are not. Get the hell out of there.
I apologize to those who really enjoyed this story - there is a very good chance your taste will improve some day.
I love extreme horror. Gore? I eat it up like candy. Violence? Sure, why not? Sexual perversions? No problem! Torture? All part of the fun! I don't get easily offended or squeamish.
You pretty much know what to expect from a book entitled Cannibal Orgy. In this story, experimentation yields a contagious disease that renders its victims sexually aggressive. When an infected man shows up at a crowded party, all hell breaks loose as the disease rapidly spreads amongst the (naturally good-looking, well-endowed) college students.
I'll start with my criticism. My biggest problem with this story is that it's so ridiculously far-fetched--not just the plot, but also the characters and their reactions to the situation. I grew increasingly annoyed and frustrated. There are also discrepancies--some trivial, like mixing up the gender of the cat, and others more significant. Plus, the ending gives the word "silly" a whole new meaning.
BUT...
I know it's a work of fiction and not everything has to be realistic, possible or even probable--especially given the nature of the story. It's for fun, after all--sort of like those old, cheesy B-movies. Well, if this were a movie, it could easily take its place beside Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (which I've never seen) and The Blob (which, as silly as it is, I honestly enjoyed)!
Was it engrossing? Despite my eye-rolling, yes it was. Entertaining? Definitely.
All in all, it's just what a book called Cannibal Orgy should be. And by the way, I do like the title--it's what drew me to the story in the first place.
If you're looking for a serious, no-nonsense read, I advise you to look elsewhere. If you are willing to suspend your disbelief, just want a little fun and don't mind a little gore and debauchery, get ready to have a blast.
Oh, and as a side note...
Who is foolish enough to get killed by a tomato? Well, I guess that's one way to improve the gene pool! 😃
Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. I almost always do, it works. And this book was just so unabashedly, vigorously itself. Which is to say it was very much the cannibal orgy it promised the readers with its lurid cover and title. It’s short, brutal and positively soaked in guts and gore. It’s set at a teenage party, so there’s all the getting laid at all costs mentality and T&A that goes with that. And it pretty much unfolds exactly as you’d think it would when a toxic agent that turns people into hungry horny homicidal maniacs is introduced into a raging hormonal pool of teens. It’s seldom you read a book and it’s just so…itself, but here you have it, a cannibal orgy on every page. Kind of refreshingly honest in a way. Mind you, it’s absolutely silly and over the top, but it’s meant to be. And every so often the brain might be just in a mood for a sort of laughably mindless gorefest…you know, as opposed to the tragically unfunny strategically horrifying clusterfuck of what’s going on in the real world. It also works as a quick palate cleanser in between more serious and more intelligent books. And yes, it is quick, the author sized it correctly as a either a very short novel or a fairly long novella, because you can’t really read that sort of thing for longer than that. Or maybe you can…Who knows. Maybe someone out there reads it as a how to manual for throwing a proper rager. Don’t know, refuse to contemplate. It was fun or a dumb fun variety for what it was. All the orgiastic cannibals you can handle. Some not too annoying kids. Lots and lots of action. Oodles and oodles of viscera. Very silly, very cheesy, might not even be a B movie…are there C movies or NC17 rated B movies? This would fit the category. Oh yeah, and a freebie.
Not bad, but not the best writing out there either. I could tell within the first few pages that this could've used another proofread, especially when it comes to punctuation. The author seems not to know that questions in dialogue end with a question mark and not a comma or period.
All the characters here were pretty flat and one-dimensional, and seem driven solely by sex, even those not infected with the disease. The women were objectified the most, differentiated by breast size every time one was introduced. But the treatment of the men wasn't much better either.
All that aside, there were some redeemable qualities of the story. The pacing was good, and it was an interesting enough premise to keep me reading. The action at the climax of the story flowed pretty nicely. Also, there were some passages that had me equally aroused and disgusted at the same time, so good job on that, I guess? I mean, that's gotta take some skill.
First off, let me say that I love gore, blood and gross. And this book was good, but it just wasn't a 5 star in my opinion. First of all, the title has big shoes to fill. Yes, there's a cannibal orgy, but it's almost a love story. It starts and ends with a military storyline. Yeah. Blah. Failed experiment. Blah. I liked the cannibal part. But there was a ton of action. Like fist fighting. Not my thing so it was hard to follow. Still. It's a good story. Just not what I was expecting
