Toot & Puddle

Take a Leap!

Rate this book
Toot wants to fly like a bird, so he persuades Puddle to join him for skydiving lessons. "You only have to watch, Puddle," he says. They learn to jump as if they were jumping from a plane. They practice on a trampoline. When the big day comes, Puddle looks on as Toot’s plane takes off. With a little encouragement from his instructor, Toot is soon soaring through the air. And Puddle is on the ground, ready to remind him to bend his knees upon impact. Both friends feel great about their roles in another amazing Toot and Puddle adventure.

Toot and Puddle: Take a Leap by National Geographic is not nearly as good nor as charming as the Toot and Puddle books written by Hollie Hobbie, nor are the illustrations as cute. I was disappointed.

According to the MIT website:

It's impossible for pigs to fly, so when someone says this, they are saying that something will (most likely) never happen.

No wonder this book isn't titled:

Two little pigs learn how to fly.

Apparently, though, that's the goal. When pigs fly!

Okay, I'll put on my Picture Book Reader hat and let all of you know what I think of this book, published by National Geographic.

LET'S GET THIS STRAIGHT

The pig named Toot tells friend Puddle, "You know, I've always wanted to skydive."

* Since when do pigs (or children) use that sophisticated tense?
* Since when do pigs (or children) say, "I've always wanted to"?

Is this book vying for the IMPOSSIBILITY AWARD IN FICTION?

Because I like that certain steps of practice have taken place, I'll rate this book with FOUR STARS. But really, I'm no fan of this book.

Too earnest, too derivative, too made-for-TV. If you love the quirky charm of the originals by Hobbie herself, skip the wannabees.

This was a very cute Toot and Puddle storybook! For once the both go on an adventure instead of one staying home and the other going. Although they both learn that if you don't try you never know if you will like it or not, and not know what all you will miss if you never try.
