Loren Do you remember your first love? I do. Andrew McKeon. My best friend. My dark angel. My creative genius. He showed me his world through art, and encouraged my writing. He loved me. I loved him, too. So much. And my parents hated him. Yeah, years later, I still think about Andrew.

Loren, Mike and Andrew became good friends in high school. They were in classes together so often worked on projects after school and hung out in the weekend. It was a bit of a sore point for Loren's parents though as they did not like her friendship with Andrew and strongly discouraged her from spending time with him.
Things changed for Loren when she was pulled into the social life of the 'popular' people and caught the eye of the very handsome Bryan. While she still remained friends with Mike and Andrew she spent most of her time in this new circle. A circle that did not like Andrew. Despite this, they remained good friends and in their last year of school, just before graduation they realised there was more than friendship between them and that in fact it was much more than that.
'I feel like you're one of those presents where there is a box inside a box, and I anticipate opening each one.'
Six years later, Loren has returned to her hometown to attend a funeral and she sees Andrew for the first time since she left. He has done everything he set out to do with this life and has a very successful career. Loren feels like she let him down, not just because she never pursued her own dreams but the way they parted ways all those years ago.
Andrew is shocked to see Loren again and is trying to understand how a girl with so much potential to be an amazing writer seems to be quite unhappy and struggling through life. One thing that hasn't changed is how beautiful she is and how much he has missed her friendship. He also remembers how much he loved her. He now lives in another city and has a girlfriend so is feeling quite conflicted about his reaction to Loren. He has this urge to wrap her in his arms and take care of her. At least he can be a good friend to her now.
As much as he tries, now that Andrew has returned home to his everyday life, he cannot get Loren out of his thoughts. Loren too finds herself looking forward to any contact from him, once again he has spurred on her passion for writing. This is the one thing she has really missed, how easy their conversations were and their shared love of music & literature.
Maybe it's best to leave all those other feelings in the past and be satisfied with what they have found again now. What if the life you were living suddenly feels so wrong and the only place you truly feel at home is with the person you first gave your heart to?
This was my late Saturday night / Sunday morning in bed reading indulgence. This story begins in the present day and then we go back in time to fill in the back story and to give the rest of the story some context. This is a debut novel for this author and I was really impressed with her writing.
Rose Croft is a debut author and High School Lover is her debut book. I was unsure of what I was going to experience prior to reading, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had surmised that it was a ‘friends to lovers’ type of setting, but it is so much more.
Andrew and Loren are good friends but are also friends with Mike. Loren and Andrew’s relationship eventually transitions into a love relationship, however, not all are happy with their new pairing. Because of this, they are forced to breakup and eventually lose touch with each other. An unforeseen and unexpected moment happens in their life that brings them back together.
Now you need to read this book to see what happens up to this point and after their reunion. Rose wrote a well-written book that takes you on the journey of these two main characters from high school to adult. Many hard-hitting topics were discussed and written well. I believe that we all could be transported in time from our own high school self through adulthood. I, truly, felt for Loren and Andrew. There were many times that I was screaming in frustration (at both these two characters and Ms. Croft) for the quest that she had created.
Besides, teenager angst and adults that had communication issues. She touched upon the stereotypical ‘norms’ that unfortunately are present in modern society. The concept of ‘judging a book by its cover’ is well covered throughout. It made me stop and think about this concept in real life.
High School Lover is well written with good topics. The ending is phenomenal!! The pacing and flow of the book was consistent, except for a small portion of the middle. The progress was still forward, just at a slower pace than the rest of the book. As I mentioned though, the ending was spectacular and made it all worth it!!
Congrats Rose on a job well done!! PS...you will fall in love with John, Andrews brother. I can't wait to read his story!
Overall an enjoyable read but I think I was expecting more.
This is a story about a lost love and believing it’s gone forever, until a tragic event brings them back together. Loren is trying to write a novel but seems stuck in the dark ages and when she sees Andrew again for the first time she knows that he is what she has been missing. Your first love is always the one you remember. But you can’t always go back as we learn in this story. Their teen love was forced to end and they are definitely unfinished business. Can they become friends or should they part ways forever?
Andrew has moved on from his small town life and has tried to forget about the girl he loved and was forced to part from. He’s finally in a place where he’s trying to love again and is in a serious relationship when fate intervenes and throws Loren back into his life. He tried to forget her and not love her but what he feels for her is something that will never die. How can he still have theses feelings fir another woman and be with Amber? He has a choice to make but will he make the right one?
This is a debut book by the author and although I enjoyed it I found the fact he had a girlfriend hard to get around especially after he returned home. Still a decent read and would love to read about John and Rosie!!!
I honestly loved this book! It showed high school kids being high school kids, parents being over protective but loving and two kids who were opposites but somewhat similar fall in love....it took years for them to reconnect and when they did their passion and love was still there....now the questions are do they get a happily ever after or move on for good? And do parents accept the relationship now that they're adults (if they even have one)...
I cannot wait to see what Rose comes up with next.
High school years are filled with everlasting emotions. Who does not read this book and goes back to those years? and who does not read this book and remembers their first love? To the author: Thanks for the memories!! I always enjoy the opportunity to read debut novels and finding new writers.
I am looking forward to reading more from Rose Croft
Best friends to lovers... to nothing??? Is it worth it to rehash old memories and old loves?
This book explores the lives of high school sweethearts who were from different sides of the tracks. :) who shares love of poetry and books. From best friends to lovers... and at reuniting with one another, wondered if their old love could stand a second chance. This is rehashing that good old love and seeing if it gets the happy ending they missed the first time.
Some life lessons:- This book also touches base on how you simply cannot judge a book by its cover. Who knows what potential they have to become something so much more than just the shell of tattoos/mistaken darkness/weirdness/brooding you see??? That was one of the things I loved was those lessons I think we ought to be reminded of constantly. There’s a lesson about morality. Doing right by the people we’re attached to one way or another.
Thanks Rose for the arc. Cheers to your first book on goodreads 💛💛💛
I say this a lot when i come across a contemporary romance that i fall in love with i dnt normally like them but this was so good i love second chance romances as well and this was a really good debut story from rose i really excited to see what she writes next
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It takes one back to those days when everything seemed so important...and it was, at the time. Excellent read. I highly recommend.
Awesome debut novel Rose Croft! High School Lover flowed along nicely for me! Loved Loren & Andrews journey being high school lovers to something that happens to break them apart! To years later being brought back together by a tragedy! Perfect ending! Gotta say l love John, Andrews brother and cannot wait for his story!
I loved this book! From the details of love, loss, and regret to the playlist that is inside of the book!! Yes, a playlist! And I must say, the author has great taste in music. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for more from this author!
3.7 for me, for a debut novel I think this author did well. We’re given a friends to lovers slow burn romance where from the beginning until a little over the 60% mark its the past when both Andrew and Loren were in High School and then back to the present time and where they are in their lives today. As we heading into strictly the present time I felt things pick up and I was even more I intrigued to see where things were heading. John and Rosie has perked my interest as well, I see their personalities being very different and hope they have their own story soon. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
