Another book I am in love with, Cari is such a relatable character and I think that is what I needed. Another heroic story!

I listened to the audiobook and the only thing I had a little trouble with was the voice of the little princess, she sounded a bit off to me.

I am a lifelong gamer, from early RPGs like D&D to current MMORPGs (if you don’t understand those acronyms don’t worry - they’re to show fellow gamers I’m not a noob; they’re not something non-gamers need to understand), so it’s no surprise that I absolutely love Jamie Davis’ LitRPG books. I started these with his first such series, the Accidental Traveler trilogy where the lead, Hal Dix, finds himself transported to another world in which - thanks to a magical spell - he alone (or practically alone) had the ability to guide his life through quests and focus on his abilities in a manner that allowed super fast development. In effect he lived as if he was the sole player in a virtual reality RPG. It was cool stuff with him starting off as a nobody and then ending as a master rogue, warrior and mage as he saved an empire from a cruel usurper. Pretty neat, right? So good that I grabbed at the opportunity to read the sequel series, Accidental Champion. This time the protagonist is Hal’s daughter Callie (though Hal and his wife do have a real role by book 3). The story line is similar - protect the sole surviving imperial heir against a usurper wanna-be - but the setting is Renaissance Adventure (think Italian Condottieri and French Royal Musketeers: swords and muskets). The fun? Spectacular. I’ve gobbled up the series’ books, and in Accidental Dragoon (Accidental Champion, Book 3) the main story line comes to a wonderful resounding conclusion. I can guarantee that if you like LitRPG you’ll love this, and that if you know nothing about RPGs at all but like good stories you’ll still love this series and third book. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. Even though this is described by kindle as the final book in a trilogy there is room for further stories, perhaps a follow-on trilogy involving Callie. I’m certainly hoping this happens and, if it does, I will look forward to the books in that series.

Sad to see it end

Another great chapter in the like of the did family. In this book a couple things that are minor but overlooked. One there is a point where they use the last of their silver on something then they keep using silver or copper coins. Two, they were talking about Cari maybe being on some islands (no name given) and no one knows what islands then Mona says the cairne islands but no one mentioned them specifically so she wouldn't have known the name. A few more minor things, Cari really didn't live up to telling people about the dwarves. She did mention it to chance but that was it. But otherwise I am very happy I read all the books. Now overall I was very happy to see the dix family all together but would have liked it sooner in the story as it was a great read. Also the ending was a let down. Ok we saved you all now bye. Would have been nice to stick around a few days maybe a week. Already we had Kay die in lonliness and without knowing anything going on and jayce having a rough life and she has to be so adult and she even asked them to stay a little but nope. Again I loved the books just me rambling my own ideas but I am not the writer so it does not matter what I think 🤪

This final book of the Accidental Champion book is full-on action from the moment you pick it up. Cari and the Princess find themselves betrayed, some of the Raiders of the island having grown tired of everything, and deciding to turn the Princess in. Some Raiders remain loyal though, and with their help, Cari, the Princess and the rest of her Group, get away onto the mainland.
It is here, that Cari finds the real truth, and just how much of a predicament she is truly in, as there are Dukes men everywhere. Left with little choice, the group run into some unexpected assistance (This is kind of one of the funny bits of the book, although at the same time, it has some full-on action scenes as well!)
Whilst this is happening, they learn that Empress Kareena has passed on from old age, and that now, unless they can get Princess Jaycee back in time to be crowned, Prince Timron will be made Emperor, or puppet of the Duke, and it suddenly becomes a race against time.
After this, Cari and the Princess, as well as some of her Loyal Crew, must make a perilous quest deep into the mountains, as there is only one way to get back to the City in time to get Jaycee crowned.
It is not long after they set off, the Cari tells Jaycee, and she makes her a loyal protector – and thus we get the title of this book, as Cari becomes a Royal Dragoon, Protector of the Empress.
This makes up a large part of the story, and is an intriguing journey, as we learn a lot of really interesting stuff about Fantasma, not just those that lived under the Mountains (and Davis does a brilliant job of not just turning this into a ‘Lord of the Rings’ type thing with great Dwarven Halls etc that has been done so many times before. Even though there is an underground section, (no real spoilers), he hasn’t just done the standard ‘Template’, but he has created a story that is uniquely his own, and a lot of fun!),
As I said, Davis has made it so that you learn about Fantasma, and its history, not only expanding on the world building, but doing it in a way that is interesting to the reader, as it is relevant to the story, and was really well told.
There is also several other aspects of the story, relating to the other Dragoons and their missions to save the Empress, the Kingdom, aiding Cari, and of course, there is the story surrounding the return of Hal Dix and his wife Mona.
It was rather interesting having Hal back in the story, having had the previous 3 stories of Hal, and all his incredible adventures, but they sort of get lost in the background of the ‘Legendary Cari Dix’, as she cuts a swathe through the Dukes Men doing one heroic thing after another. Especially being the ‘Dread Pirate Cari’, which her Father was very amused at, given the obvious cultural reference.
However, Mum and Dad are also terrified about how their Daughter is coping, is she ok, and has anything bad happened to her, knowing what Hal went through and the impact, both mentally and physically, it had on him. It is really well done, as there is a lot of introspection on various different things, such as the violent actions they have had to take, even though they were in self-defence, taking a life still has an effect on you. Taking hundreds can have a much more profound effect, especially when a lot of them are in close combat. The gritty, realistic and brutal nature of the combat, and its impact on Cari has not been hidden, nor has the impact on Hal, and it is really good that The Author has made sure to face these issues openly. Hal admits to suffering from severe PTSD on his return, and needing help, and there is concern Cari will need similar assistance.
(Having dealt with PTSD from the Police – it’s at this point I should say, if you have any issues, get some help, there are people out there to help you, if you need to talk, PM me – PTSD is serious, but you are not alone)
As with each of the other books, the character work has again been exceptional. You can not only relate to Cari, really understand her, but as an intelligent young woman with an attitude, I know exactly how she acts, as I have one (a 15yr old Daughter going on 30 LOL). What is really great though, is the character growth, and how she goes from being the angry youth, to this mature, confident, and intelligent Woman. It not only affects her personality, but her fighting style as well, how she wields her sword, and the skill she shows with it as she grows. Cari learns a lot of valuable lessons, not just about how to kill, but about how not to kill, how to be a better diplomat. It is intriguing watching her character development, and it has made for an extraordinary story.
The other exceptional Character of course is Hal. It was (as I said before), fascinating having Hal back in the story, but his character has changed. Not able to draw as much magic as previously, and being a bit older now, Hal is not quite the same as once was, but what he might have dropped in speed or strength, he has gained in knowledge and maturity.
Hal is a real leader on his return, and it is fascinating watching the changes in his character – Davis is such a clever Author.
For those that love LitRPG, this has those elements, there is great character development, I have found that the mechanism that Davis has used to operate his LitRPG is on the one hand informative, gives great insight into the character, their development, attributes, skills and leveling up – all the stuff that makes LitRPG the fun thing it is – but at the same time, it is not lost in it, or overwhelmed by it – Davis has really found a great mix. He has also managed to combine the LitRPG elements into the actual story, so that the characters are a part of it to (Hal listening to the strange dice noise as he uses his luck, and things of this nature). Davis has made the LitRPG elements an exciting part of this story, rather than just an element of the story, it is very clever.
This is a brilliant end to what has been an exceptional series, and if you like Fantasy, LitRPG, or just a great action read, you will love this Series, not just these 3 books, but the original 3 to – this is a must read for any fan of LitRPG or Fantasy!!

This is the last installment in this trilogy and I am very sad to see it go. However, I am excited to report that there are a couple loose ends at the end of the book which might lead to another trilogy, or maybe just some novellas. As I say in all my reviews for this series, if you aren’t a fan of LitRPG, please still pick this up. The elements are few and far between, just enough to intrigue you and not confuse you if you know nothing about LitRPG because this book was fun, had lots of action, and I loved how well the authors make it seem like you are there, experiencing everything going on around the characters. And speaking of characters, I have loved each and every one introduced to us throughout the series. We do get to see just about everyone in this last book, too, which was a treat. If you are already a fan, you will love this concluding title. This was a great adventure from start to finish! Highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

This book was a pretty good end to this trilogy. There was a race of people mentioned in the book that I would like to have heard more about. Things sounded mysterious about them, and the mystery was never looked into. Perhaps there will be another trilogy in this universe that looks into that. I would enjoy that. There was one ability that the main character gained and used a few times but I felt she under used. She could have used it much more to help solve problems that she was having. She gained the ability from the mysterious race, but I won't say what the ability was or who the race was so as to avoid spoilers. Aside from what I have said, the book was great. I recommend it.

A fairly standard series end, nothing too surprising.

It's really a wrap-up, with the interesting bits being when Cari finally discovers what her parents are capable of as adventurers (and we haven't really seen how Mona became one such... next trilogy maybe?). I was curious on how M. Davis would go with the ending, but he took the safe road. Would probably have given a 4th star if Cari had chosen differently.

Marvelous

Simply wonderful series.
The books are binge worthy.
I’m soo glad my friend recommended the “Accidental” book series.
Chases and escapes.
Treason and conspiracy.
Kings and Empresses.
Possible Spoiler
.
.
The ending is complete, no cliffhangers but there maybe a loose thread or two that leaves an opening for future books.

Read the Swashbuckling Trilogy

This is a well written but involved story of a amazingly competent teenager. It involves a slightly future ca.2032 period with her transfer to CA 1700s Fantasy world with some remnants of magic. Her parents had become immersed in a video game where the has saved an Empress. Orks, elves and goblins are involved. An excellent read throughout.

Swashbuckling fantasy at its best

This last book in the series takes the excitement of adventure mixed with great characters and an attention grabbing plot to hold the reader's mind. I continue to enjoy the this storyline.

Not bad for middle-grade fiction. Many things were not foreshadowed, thus seeming to be pulled out of the author's... imagination. Others were foreshadowed but weren't consummated. For example, I wanted to see Cari's solution to the Major's invisibility power.

I love the concept of both Hal 3 books prior, as well as now his daughter in this world. The idea of being stuck in a video game like situation was something I thought would be the coolest thing way back when I was a kid. I would love to see more like these stories.

I liked how this story played out, but I still wanted more. The fight scenes worked really well, especially when we switched who was talking about the fight. I liked seeing Cari interact with her parents as well.
