3.5 stars, rounded up.

I'm a little (okay, a lot) late with this review, seeing how this was published in early November, but life gets in the way so I'm playing catch-up.

This is the 3rd book in The Walker Boys series, which are all part of the overall Dreamspun Desires umbrella, but can be read entirely as a standalone.

Devin Walker wants to be a chef, but is currently working on the Poseidon, a cruise ship, as a bartender. He flirts innocently with the guests, and bides his time until a position becomes open that will allow him to get into the kitchen.

Paul Bailey is on the ship as part of his training to take over the cruise ship company as its heir, but he's incognito, pretending to be just one of the company execs, and there's only one person on the ship who knows his real identity. He's given Devin as a guide while on board, so he can inconspicuously visit in the areas that are for employees only.

Paul has another secret - he lost his leg in a car accident and believes that he really isn't attractive to anyone anymore because of that.

Devin makes it his mission to show the exec a good time, while also giving him a tour of the ship, as well as enticing the quiet man to enjoy exploring the ports in which they stop.

Romance ensues, obviously. I really liked the characters - they were opposites in some ways, but both were complex and nuanced. I enjoyed getting to know them both, and I definitely enjoyed Devin's efforts to pull Paul out of his shell. The descriptions of the tropical locales were well done, and I had no trouble at all envisioning the beauty of these islands. With close proximity, what with being on a ship, comes a relationship that burns brightly from the start, even if Paul hesitates to open his heart again. But Devin is persistent, giving him room to make choices, gently encouraging Paul to trust. I really enjoyed watching their budding relationship bloom.

As with all secrets - eventually they come out, and as Devin finds out just who Paul really is, and his manager sticking her nose where it really doesn't belong, he runs. It's not so much a big misunderstanding as it is Devin not wanting to be anyone's toy. Being lied to breaks the fragile relationship they have built so far, and I didn't blame the guy for tucking tail and going home to lick his wounds.

This is a romance, so obviously it doesn't end there. There's the expected grand gesture, and we get to visit with some of the characters from previous books in this series. I liked that the Walker family protected their own, and that the eventual reunion wasn't "forgive and forget".

There were a couple of things primarily around Paul's prosthetic leg that I questioned - walking on sand, getting it wet, that sort of stuff. I have zero experience with these things but I wondered whether the descriptions here were accurate.

I enjoyed reading this book. It's the kind of book you want to pick up to spend a few quiet hours sitting on your back porch and enjoying your favorite drink.

Shipboard romances have a charm all their own, but the one at the center of this very entertaining novel has a few twists. First there are the complex main characters, one of whom, Devin, is an ambitious cousin of the Walkers in books one and two, while the other, Paul, is a man dealing with having lost a leg in an accident. Then there is the touch of corporate intrigue due to the fact that Paul is trying to assess the cruise ship’s performance as part of his taking over the company from his father – but nobody on the ship is aware of his heritage. By the time you add the exotic setting and a few surprises to these secrets, the result is a touch of suspense, a touching romance, and an ending that could not have been better designed to make me a happy reader.

I didn’t really care much for this book. I listened as an audiobook and would have walked away except John Solo kept me listening. This was my second book by Ari MacKay and I think it will be my last. The writing style was fine, but I just didn’t care for the story. I hate it when characters break up about 80% into the story. Some authors can carry this off without ruining the story for me, but this story didn’t do that . This just seemed like miscommunication for the sake of keeping the story going. I also noticed that Devin’s cousin and his husband spent 10 years apart over miscommunication and I sure don’t want to read that book.

5 Hearts Audio reviewed by Prime for MM Good Book Reviews

Seeking Solace is the third book in Ari McKay’s series The Walker Boys. It isn’t essential that you read the previous books, though it would probably make life easier when one of the MCs, Devin Walker, talks about his family back home in Buffalo Lick, Texas. Much like the previous two books, Seeking Solace is a sweet and simple romance at heart. Of course, there is a good dose of drama, mostly fuelled by miscommunication and running away from one’s problems, but it is a fun and adorable story.

I really enjoyed this story when I read it and looked forward to the audio. When I grabbed the audio from Audible, I was even more excited to see that the narration of this book was done by John Solo. I absolutely love Solo’s narration, he has the magic touch – the magic tonsils? – when it comes to bringing emotional depth into the characters with just the tone of his voice. Some of Solo’s performances are also so good that a book that I didn’t like when I read it, or pick it up to read after listening to audio, are far more enjoyable than just reading the written text. That is the sign of a good narrator, in my opinion. Seeking Solace is no exception in terms of performance, I loved it and connected to Devin and Paul so quickly, especially when the drama of the story comes into play.

The story is about Devin Walker, one of the famous Walker boys from Buffalo Lick, Texas. Unlike his many cousins, he had it a little tougher time growing up when people out of town hurled racial abuse at him. Like many others in Walker clan, he has the cooking bug. He wants to be a chef but before he can get there, Devin is working as a bar tender on a cruise ship, where he meets Paul Bailey.

However, Paul Bailey is Paul Mercer. He is on the cruise ship undercover, as he is in fact the heir of the cruise line company. He just wants to be seen as another exec who has to spend time on ship before settling into a job at head office. Devin becomes Paul’s staff liaison and the two quickly develop a friendship that becomes something a lot more meaningful.

The problem being, is that when Devin discovers Paul’s true surname, he feels betrayed and goes back to the only place he knows to recover. Paul is confused why he didn’t see Devin and again and when he discovers what has happened he is determined and sweet enough to take the biggest risk.

These guys are well suited. Their chemistry is strong but there is something deeper to it than their physical attraction, which does bring in something of an instalove aspect to the book. This is the perfect escape book for a relatable and relatively uncomplicated romance. Fans of the previous books in the series or fans of Ari McKay or people that simply love the romance and sappiness that comes from many Dreamspun Desire books, you won’t be disappointed. For anyone else, if you’re into simple and sweet romances then this is the book for you.

Though this book is part of The Walker Boys series, it can certainly be read as a standalone since the connection is a loose one based on certain characters from the books being from the same family. This one is a hurt/comfort story, and though I know some readers may categorize it as kind of insta-lovey, the close proximity of the two main characters in the short timeframe of the cruise along with the large amount of time they spent together were factors that contributed to the quick, intense buildup between them.

Devin is an intelligent, perceptive young man and has an outgoing, bright personality. He’s cautious though when it comes to relationships thanks to a prior partner, and has had his share of poor treatment in the past due to his mixed heritage. Paul may seem like he has it all being the heir to his family’s cruise line, but he has had challenges when it comes to relationships thanks to an insensitive partner and other potential ones who can’t handle that Paul lost part of one of his legs in an accident. He has his own feelings of inadequacy thanks to that…but Devin sees past Paul’s loss to the man he is and what he is capable of. He just needs to convince Paul of that.

While Paul tries to keep Devin at arm’s length to both maintain a professional distance and to protect his heart from another anticipated rejection, he’s so comfortable with Devin—and Devin’s pretty hard to resist—that you know that’s not going to last. Devin proves to be quite insightful, often saying things that make him sound like a therapist (something Paul acknowledges to him as well). But the chemistry that quickly develops between the two of them overrides everything else. They quickly feel like a couple that’s been together for a while, and the physical chemistry is definitely there.

There’s some angst introduced to the story courtesy of Paul’s slight deception, and that actually winds up escalating later in the story once Devin finds out the truth. It’s the one main hurdle for them to overcome in the story, and it’s at this point in the story that we get to see some of the characters from the previous books make an appearance. But as I mentioned earlier, it’s not necessary to have read the other books first, though I’ll bet if you haven’t then these characters will definitely pique your interest even with the short amount of time they appear in this story.

Seeking Solace was a solid 4-star read for me, and is one I’d definitely recommend to any M/M romance fan. This book is for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

This book is about leaving your past behind and embracing what the future holds.

Paul Mercer is next in line to inherit the Triton family business of cruise ships. Paul has never been on a cruise, so his father sets him up on a two week business opportunity aboard the Poseidon’s Pearl, where he is somewhat undercover, using a false last name. He's trying to get a read on the staff hospitality and needs, but when he sees bartender Devin Walker, he can't help mix business with pleasure.

I enjoyed the easy relationship between Paul and Devin. Paul had been burned in the past when an accident claimed his leg. Living with a prosthetic had been difficult to manage and his ex had wanted no part in his recovery. But Devin wanted Paul to enjoy life to the fullest and find happiness anywhere he could. He really changed Paul's outlook and it was fun to read the change in Paul.

While I thought the story was fun, it was somewhat slow for me. I loved that the relationship between the two was the main focus, but I guess I was waiting for more action or adventure to take place.

This was a good, fun, low angst read with plenty of good times and a HEA.

I'm glad to see a variety of characters coming out more lately. It makes things so much more real. In this story we have someone with a handicap and someone who is used to being picked on because of race. I really enjoyed it. This is another good one in this series and I think you guys will like this one as well. Of course, I'm a sucker for happy.

Another sexy Walker to add to the mix and I want to keep him. Blessed with Native American genes, he's got tall, dark, and sexy down. Reading how he looked, I wanted to jump in this book and drag him off to my cave. Lol. Plus, he's got a personality to match. Sweet as can be and unconditionally accepting of people. Of course, he can be hurt. He has his insecurities like anyone. Being picked on because you're different is so hard. But Devin is just a doll. He's worked so hard to get where he is. He dreams of the day he can own his own restaurant and have someone to call his own. Working on the Triton Cruise Lines has helped him to save money so he can acquire at least one of his dreams. Seeing the beautiful Paul walk into the bar on this cruise, makes him want to acquire the second one.

Paul is a sweetheart himself. And he's a tall drink of water. But the car accident he was in has left him with a disability that has earned him a lonely life. His boyfriend left him after the accident, he guesses because he didn't want to deal with it. And anyone else has seen the scars and ran. Which has left him with even more scars. He's undercover, so to speak, to see how the cruises are doing as far as staff, etc, for when he's ready to take over. Seeing Devin has made him feel things he hasn't felt in a long time but he's terrified. And who can blame him.

Watching these two learn each other is so sweet. Both have had some bad experiences and are gun shy. Devin is a little more outgoing lol. Well a lot, but even he is a bit guarded. I loved seeing him bring Paul out of the shell. To show someone unconditional support and like when they've been really scarred is a big deal. And Devin didn't care. Scars don't make a person. They just add a bit of flair. The more they got to know each other, the better it became. It was sweet and new, refreshing.

The bad part was when the secrets out. And because of insecurities, communication was nil. And that's bad. And of course, I am screaming at the book for them to get it together. They are perfect for each other. So get it together lol.

It is such a sweet story though. I've enjoyed this series. The bonds that are made and the families. And how families are supposed to stick together. Good book.

Sweet story but... I have been cringing so hard all the way. It took me a week of forcing myself through it. And it was complete torture going through the sex scene because they talked more than normal people would in that situation, and it made my entire being writhe in agony.
And that dialogue... omfg... sometimes it sounded like two girls talking, and yes they are gay but they are still men! And the rest of the time, I just thought, I have never heard anyone talk to each other like that. Not natural at all. I wished several times that they would just shut up already!
The authors are too happy to use the word 'pleasure' and I started to get sick of seeing that word.
Too many clichés! Holy shit! So many vomiting worthy clichés...
But the worst of all!!!! And I'm very mad about this!!
The fact that Paul is missing a leg has no influence on the story what so ever... I felt the authors pissed on people with this kind of injury. They have not researched it what so ever.. saying that 'he's limping when he has walked a long time' and then they are sight seeing all over an island but he is not complaining about hurting or being tired! Wth! The weather is hot and they are sweating, that can be a very big problem for the prosthetic gel liner, because it can get uncomfortable and start to slip off the limp. And when he is taking the leg at off at night, there is no talk about the liner and the hassel to clean it. Plus, I have heard many complain that the liner stinks at the end of the day because of the sweat. But nothing at all. And what about backpain from walking weirdly on the stiff leg? No? Because the authors thinks he can go totally normal on it. No bullshit, if you look closely, then even the most normal looking walk on a person with a prosthetic leg has a slight limp. And why doesn't he have a biomechanic leg? He's rich, for crying out loud!
And then there is the fact that the socket has to be readjusted at some point as he is gaining muscle. And what about phantom pain? I know it's not all who have big problems with that, but come on, I want to feel bad for the guy, there has to be a meaning of taking such an injury into the book. And I properly could find other things, but if the authors see this review, they can research it themselves. Or you as a reader. It's a very interesting topic so it's so sad it has not been performed better in the book. Paul could have had the accident, been traumatised, having scars, without having to lose the leg, because it had no impact on the story. And what about PTSD? I would think that after such an accident you would be very scared about going into a car again, but that worked just fine for him.. it doesn't make any sense at all.

This is a book about learning to live again. A book about finding love. A book about letting go of past hurts to be able to have an incredible future. Ari McKay did a great job on this book. It was such an interesting read from one of the main characters having image issues about having his leg cut off. Too the other main character trying to help him find his confidence in himself again and not letting the fact that he has a fake leg define him. This was beautifully written.

Paul is the heir to Triton Cruise lines. But before he takes over he has to take a cruise on one their ships to learn the ins and outs of it. What Paul does not expect is to meet a man the first day on the ship named Devon. Devon is a bartender and reached out to Paul the moment he got on the ship.

What Devon nor Paul knew was Devon is going to be Paul’s liaison on the ship. So this gives both men much more time to get to know one another. When Devon finds out that Paul is having self confidence issues because of his leg, Devon takes it upon himself to try and help Paul to overcome his self issues.

The more these two get to know one another and the more time they spend together the more attracted to one another they become. As Paul starts to open up and start to trust in himself and not his looks, he starts to become a happier, lighter version of himself. Devon can not resist Paul and the same for Paul happens with Devon.

Once the cruise starts to come to and end, both men decide that they want to continue their new Found relationship and see where things go. But before that can happen a secret is revealed and both men are left missing the other. All this happens because one man gets scared and cannot face the other man.

Can these two find their way back to one another and start again? Will they be able to overcome the secret that came between them?

This was a great read and I definitely look forward to more books by Ari McKay in the future.

A sweet romance, with a side of heat.

Seeking Solace is the first book I've read by Ari McKay and I liked it a lot. It's the third book in The Walker Boys series but can easily be read as a standalone. I haven't had time to read the first two yet and I didn't feel lost at all by reading just this one.

This was a really sweet story with a few sexy scenes that weren't overly graphic. Both of the MCs (main characters) have been hurt by past relationships. Paul lost part of one leg in an accident and it has left him feeling less than whole after his boyfriend dumped him and other men he tried to date couldn't handle his scars. Devin's past relationship ended when he found out his wealthy boyfriend was just using him to make his parents mad.

Paul is incognito on board a ship in his family's cruise line to learn more about how things work on a ship since he will be taking over the company reins when his father retires. Devin is working as a bartender hoping to move up to a position in the kitchen so he can use his culinary school training; he eventually wants to open his own restaurant.

I really liked the sweet, yet hot, chemistry between Devin and Paul. Both are afraid to start anything since they expect to be parting at the end of the two-week cruise. When Devin is assigned to liaison with Paul, to help him learn more about the ship, they both find it impossible to resist the feelings they have for each other.

Things go wrong when Devin learns who Paul is before Paul has a chance to tell Devin himself and Devin feels used again by a wealthy man.

I really enjoyed this story. The pacing was good and the words flowed well making it an easy and entertaining story to read. Now I want to go back and read the first two stories!

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I'm not normally one for shipboard romances but this one was really well written and enjoyable from the beginning. The characters are well rounded men that you can relate to, both with their own problems but with each other their personalities really start to shine through. Especially so with Paul, who's past trauma has led him to a fairly isolated life but upon meeting Devin he can start to break through some of the stresses that were holding him back.
Devin is an easy man to fall in love with. He's fun, laid back, really friendly but stays professional when working. Reading as he takes Paul on visits to places that he loves is a treat as as a reader, I felt included and excited by what they got to see and experience. Ari's descriptions of the Caribbean islands are brilliant, really brings them to life.
The easy and quick connection between the two men, though fast considering it's a cruise holiday, felt believable in the way the story played out and the way in which the men related and connected with each other. I do enjoy insta-love stories as I can fully enjoy building of a relationship between them.
We were introduced to several great supporting characters, friends of Devin's from working on the ship as well as his family back home. Their interactions were charming, funny and got to show off Devin's lighter side. Due to Paul just focusing on work and being solitary for quite a while, there was no one for him to introduce but I got the feeling that will be changing when these two decided on their future.
I really enjoyed this book and it's not necessary to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy or understand. I myself will be going off to find them and add to my TBR pile!
I received an ARC from the publisher and am happily giving a review.

Seeking Solace is a Dreamspun desire. This means it is based on a usual trope, full of romance and usually a HEA ending.
Seeking Solace is also book 3 of the Walker Boys and where this stands alone pretty good, I think I would have gotten more if I had read the others. I felt like this was more Paul’s story than Devin who is one of the Walker Boys.
Paul is the son of the owner of Triton Cruise lines, a high luxury vacation line. He is being groomed to take over as CEO of the company when his father retires. He also been in an accident and lost his leg, his boyfriend and confidence.
Devin is the bartender on the Pearl and loves his job though he is hoping for a job in the kitchen to open up as his dream is to be a great chef and open his own restaurant. He and Paul hit it off from the start, then Devin finds himself as liaison to Paul to help him meet everyone. This makes both men happy. They become good friends, hoping for more, but will Paul’s secret tear them apart when the cruise is over.
I liked this story. It was very sweet, and a good vacation read. I loved getting a tour off the cruise ship and resorts and felt swept away.
I listened to it on audio and have to say this wasn’t the perfect choice for a narrator for this story. I have listened to some John Solo and usually like his narration but the voices he gave these characters just didn’t fit. Devin is a Texan and he had no accent or any personality. Other than the voices the narration was good.
If you like, cruises, bartenders, men that are physically challenged, a sweet romance you will like this book.

Devin Walker is a chef biding his time as a bartender on the Triton Cruise liner Poseidon's Pearl. He's saving money to buy his own restaurant and enjoying being able to see part of the world. He's been hurt in the love department before but he's willing to try again.
Paul Mercer AKA Paul Bailey is the heir to the Triton Cruise Line. His father's retiring next year so he needs to take a crash coarse on how a cruise line runs from the bottom up. When he lands on the Poseidon's Pearl he's directed to Devin to show him the ropes.
Devin and Paul have an instant connection. They get along great and have a lot of fun in the learning process. Devin takes Paul to obscure places on all the port stops and introduces Paul to new things. After the 2 week cruise Devin and Paul make plans to meet off ship but it's interrupted by Devin finding out who Paul really is and the miscommunication causes hurt. Paul gives Devin time to calm down and then he goes after him full tilt.
The first 2/3 of this book is slow and reads like someone took a romance and a travel book and mixed them together. The parts of Devin showing Paul the ship and the port stops were too interspersed with travel details and not enough of their having fun and falling in love IMO. Both men had had previous bad relationships that they had to deal with and it interfered with their relationship and caused the miscommunication at the end of the cruise. The romance was nice but wasn't hot or passionate. I was hoping it would heat up but it didn't. The book ends in a HEA and is a nice ending to the Walker trilogy.

ARC received for an honest review.

This was a really sweet love story, not to mention a very romantic one with “love boat” vibes of the very best kind. Very much a feel good romance with a little dash of hurt/comfort, but low on angst and conflict.

Devin is working as a bartender on a Triton cruise ship when he meets Paul, who is an executive for Triton Cruises. Devin is put in charge of showing Paul around and explaining the day-to-day workings onboard ship. They both instantly like each other and go from a tentative friendship to something more almost seamlessly.

Paul has been in an accident and is understandably self-conscious about his scars and prosthetic leg after being dumped by his boyfriend because of them. He’s well rid of that guy, of course. I adored Devin for being so sensitive, supportive and full of wise advice. Paul slowly learns to trust him, and to trust in the attraction and feelings that they have for one another, but he’s been keeping a secret from Devin… One that might very well ruin everything.

I loved the dynamic of the Walker family and how they stick up for each other. There’s teasing, but also a united front when one is needed, very heartwarming and uplifting to read.

This can be read perfectly as a standalone, although I have to admit I’m super curious about the other books in this series now! But that’s okay, I’m in total control of my TBR-pile…not.

Seeking Solace is book three in Ari McKay’s Walker Brother series. Though I never recommend this, it’s possible to read this as a stand-alone BUT, I really like this series and characters so before you get all crazy and jump right in, maybe you should just start at the beginning!

Devin Walker is living his best life working on a cruise ship as a bartender. He loves the travel, his job and his life. He hopes to eventually work as a chef on the ship, but he’s in his element regardless. When Devin is asked to show a new executive around, he gives Paul the experiences that the tourist misses on the ship and islands. Paul isn’t new to the ship, but keeps his secrets. Neither man expects the time together to become something more.

This is such an easy series to fall in love with! The characters are well-written and brought to life. Though I’m not sure I’d ever want to take a cruise I found the cruise experience fascinating! There is so much behind the scenes action happening in the book, I really hope this is what it’s like! And if it’s accurate and you’re thinking about a cruise, read this because you’ll immediately sign up for one when you’re finished! The author did a great job bringing to life the islands that Paul and Devin are exploring.

And, I was happy to see some familiar characters included in this book! They’re just a small part of the story, which is why, if you have to, you can just read this one. The only reason it’s not a 5-star rating for me is because of the misunderstanding and miscommunication. I get it, it was easily taken care of. Eventually. I just am not a fan, personally. Otherwise, this was another terrific addition to the series and one I’d highly recommend!

A very strong 4 stars

After getting past the initial first chapter of unfortunate info dump where I wondered why I had to see everything little thing on the cruise ship, Paul Bailey, aka Mercer, the heir to Triton Cruises, does the whole meet/cute in the ship's bar.

Devin Walker, cousin of Beau and Liam of Books 1 and 2, wanted a position in the kitchen, but took the bartending job when it was available, with an eye towards getting in front of a stove. Wouldn't you know it but Devin is chosen to be Paul's liaison on the ship, and as they spend more and more time together, they fall for each other.

I really enjoyed how these two men connected and used their personal experiences and stories to learn about each other. The dialogue was smooth and the interactions between the main characters and other side characters were wonderfully written. Oh, and there's hints of hidden gems of description along the way. I loved seeing glimpses of the inner workings of a cruise ship (I've personally only taken one trip so far to the Bahamas) and the different ports of call. Now, I'm ready for my next cruise! Lol.

This might have been even a 4.5 - but I had an issue with most of chapter one, so I'm going to leave it at the 4.

This book was received free from the authors in return for an honest review.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

from that review "The Walker Boys series by Ari McKay all center around main characters that are or have aspirations to be chefs with their own restaurants. Seeking Solace (The Walker Boys 3) by Ari McKay falls into the latter category.  Devin Walker, of the enormous Texas Walker clan, has been working on board the Triton line cruise ship learning the kitchen and "the ropes", waiting for the chance to move up into the role of chef.  It's a job he loves, even though he wants it to be temporary in the long run with his goal of opening his own restaurant, just as a trained chef would.

Everything is going according to plan, until he is assigned the role of liaison to a visiting executive who needs to learn more about the Triton cruise business from the bottom to the top, never realizing who the man is that he's showing around."

Ari McKay's Seeking Solace is a fun romance. It's the 3rd book in the Walker Boys series, but it is easily read as a standalone.

Devon, a worker on a cruise ship, meets Paul, the son of the owner, when Paul comes on the ship incognito. They connect when Devon shows him everything about the ship.

It's tender and beautiful the way that Devon helps Paul to realize his self-worth. As Paul's recently lost a leg, he's been lonely and depressed. Now, with Devon's help, he's able to realize he can still do a lot of things, he just might have to find a new way to do things. Devon compassionately teaches Paul that he isn't broken, that he's still a whole man.

The ways in which Paul opens up to Devon are brave and intense. It's with Devon's help that he's able to do so. These moments are eloquent and inspiring.

Seeking Solace is a fantastic and entertaining read. Be sure to check out this one by Ari McKay when you're in the mood for something sweet and nurturing.

A cute shipboard romance between a bartender and the company official (who just happens to be the owner's son) who he has to show around the ship. The owner lost his leg in an accident and feels self-conscious but it doesn't take them long to connect. I question a) the logic of taking up with one of your employees b) how it was going to work long-term with him based in the US while the guy is on a ship most of the year, but it was cute.

Absolutely delightful!
I loved this sweet love story born on the beaches of the Caribbean and on a dream cruise.
Even if Devin and Paul keep something hidden from the other and the scenario for the birth of their romance is obviously an idyllic and unrealistic one, the core of who they are and what they feel for each other is more than real!
I enjoyed this series so much that I wish there were at least another dozen of Walker cousins to read about!

3.75 stars rounded up

I enjoyed the previous two Walker Boys book that I kindly requested for the advanced copy for the third book.

Seeking Solace featured another Walker cousin, Devin Walker, who works as bartender at a cruise ship, Poseidon’s Pearl. Devin has been tasked to be a liaison for one of the top management who comes to supervise the day in and day out of the ship. Little does Devin knows that the top management person is actually Paul Mercer, the son of the Triton Cruise CEO, the company that owns the ship.

Paul comes to the ship under the name of Bailey, hiding his true last name to avoid the staffs to act differently around him. He is also a bit reserved at first. Paul survived car accident that amputated his leg, and suffered from broken relationship when his ex-boyfriend left after the accident.

Devin is more outgoing, friendly, and accepts Paul for who he is, never seeing the prosthetic leg as flaw. I loved reading how Devin slowly coaxed Paul out of his shell.

There’s near-the-end drama when Devin finds out Paul’s true identity, but just like any romance, our men find the way back to each other again. There is a brief cameo from cousin Beau and Liam (from two previous books) which made me quite happy.

Despite the short time that Devin and Paul spend together during the cruise, I never felt that their romance was too instant. Maybe because they did quite a lot of things together, there were dates and talking about each other’s dreams. It was sweet and fit the Dreamspun line very well.

A delightful HEA

The Walker Boys series is a great bunch of stories. I love this one. Just enough angst to make their Happily ever after that much sweeter. I highly recommend this book.

Romantic, easy read. The sort of story I've come to expect from this line, and done well.

Don't expect large amounts of angst, this romance is pretty much plain sailing.

Like his cousins, Devin Walker aspires to be a chef, but he wants to indulge his wanderlust while feeding his customers, and working a cruise ship seems like the solution. Since he can’t find an opening in the kitchen, he’s happy to start out in a position behind the bar.

While onboard Poseidon’s Pearl, Devin is assigned to shepherd a visiting executive. Paul Bailey is quiet and unassuming, and the car accident that cost him his leg also shattered his confidence. He doesn’t think he’s attractive to other men anymore, and Devin is eager to show him just how wrong he is. Paul has a surprising secret that might sink their passionate affair before it even leaves port.
I loved the idea of a cruise ship romance, even more that it wasn’t a passenger type thing but workers. Add in that Devin wants to be a chef and I thought this is a total win for me. Devin comes from a super close knit, large family who support each other unconditionally. That was another win for me. Paul’s family, though wealthy, doesn’t seem quite as close.
Paul is on board to check out the workings of the ship but he is there with a secret. One that really doesn’t affect much unless you start hanging out with and falling for the bartender who is assigned to be your ship liason. They both have baggage, Paul’s in the shape of an ex-boyfriend who after Paul lost his leg in an accident dumped him and assumed they would no longer be able to do the physical, outdoor things they had always done; Devin’s in the form of an ex-boyfriend who was using him as a way to upset his conservative parents.
The two bond over getting to know the ship’s crew and workings. Devin shows Paul how to chill out a little and enjoy life and in the process begins to fall for him. It was a little odd to read how much time off Devin got. With a relative who worked the cruise ships who always talked about how little time was their own, this was a little bit of a shock.
I felt like they got to know each other, even though the secret was in the way. It was insta-love to be sure, as the whole thing happens over the course of a two-week cruise. The final reveal of the secret is a little bit of a let down. There is no angst here, despite the baggage they each have, and they are pretty well adjusted. Paul gets over his insecurity about his missing leg and scars fairly easily as well.
A very weird thing was as I was reading about Beau Walker and Jake Parnell, Devin’s cousin and his husband, I kept thinking how much I would like to read their story. It wasn’t until I looked it up to add to my list that I realized I already read it!
There is a moment in Jamaica with a pair of shorts, when Devin realizes that he is really falling for Paul, that totally made my heart melt. It was my favorite moment of the book.
