I would like to know what the author was reading when she wrote this book, because it has more 2-page chapters than I have ever seen in my life. The main character is interesting, especially because she has such a calm response to many events. Might be based on a true story.
This novella was a pretty simple story of 80’s life of beautiful people.
Kate is thought to have murdered her fiancée two years before. The crime’s stigma follows her and hurts her modeling career. Kate is caught up in the fakeness of society. She moves on and moves in with her new boyfriend whose job is very vague, but he is always traveling. Between the parties and beach life, the police still have her on their radar as she tries to regain a career and try acting.
The beauty of this book is the short chapters that skips back and forth in time and comes quickly to name the murderer.
This was nice and short, and somehow struck me as beautiful, though it's hard to say how exactly. It's technically set up as a murder mystery, but it's more about the survivor and her beautiful fragility. I don't think this book is for everyone, but it might draw you in when you want something sort of different.
I thought at first that this was very dated; it was written in the late '80s and has that Hollywood sheen to it (and it doesn't help that the author photo on the back gives me the creeps). But upon completion, I think it's more artistic than I at first thought. The twist was great - I didn't see it coming. But I never felt invested in any of the characters.
