Ivy and Abe were inseparable as children until an accident tore them apart. Several decades later, when they are both in their seventies, a chance encounter reunites them.

This is a well written book, but unfortunately it was not for me. The book centres round Ivy and Abe and how their relationship developed. There is a lot of different timelines to this story. I did enjoy some of the scenarios, but sadly not them all. Each scenario/chapter needs a new setting and a lot of explaining. I'm sure there will be many readers who will enjoy this book.

Time forks perpetually towards innumerable futures...

“Ivy and Abe” takes the theory of the multiverse and uses it to tell the story - the many stories - of two people destined to meet in many different timelines. Sometimes Ivy and Abe meet as children, sometimes as adults, at different ages. They’re friends, or lovers, or a married couple - sometimes, they’re just passing strangers. But there’s always a connection of some kind. Their story - stories - are told through a series of narratives by Ivy which are self contained yet interconnected.

Some things echo throughout: a lorry load of hay bales, a family shadowed by hereditary disease. The words “I’m so glad I found you.” From time to time Ivy experiences a sense of deja vu, that what she’s experiencing is somehow familiar.

I very much enjoyed the book, which takes an original concept and executes it very well. I was afraid it would feel ultimately unresolved, but in fact the end is satisfying. I did at times, when I had put the book down and returned to it later, find it difficult to recall - due to the similarities between the timelines - what the relationships were in the current timeline and had to flick back to remind myself.

Incidentally, thinking about the book yesterday while driving to a meeting, I suddenly found myself stuck behind a lorry piled with hay bales, small pieces of hay flying off and hitting my windscreen. It was a little bit unnerving....

Beautiful. Powerful. Stunning. Superb. These are all words that I would use to describe IVY & ABE by Elizabeth Enfield and I still don't feel that they do this story justice. Ivy and Abe's story moved me in ways that I have never been moved before and showed the power of love and timing to perfection.

This is the story of one love story: Ivy and Abe. Their love is that magical kind of love, that once in a lifetime kind of love that takes your breath away when you read it. But what would happen if Ivy and Abe met at different times of their lives when they are different people in different circumstances - would their deep connection be enough to overcome wrong timing and obstacles that would block their path in these alternate realities? Can love overcome everything?

IVY & ABE by Elizabeth Enfield makes you look at love and life in a new way and I could not put it down. I fell in love with Ivy and Abe myself and invested so much in them as a couple that I laughed and cried alongside each of their possible love stories. The writing in this book is simply stunning and the ebbs and flows of life, loss, and heartbreak are portrayed expertly and in such a way that it really hits home to the reader. There are drama and adventure, grief and desperation, hope and inspiration throughout this magnificent story and at the centre of it all will always be Ivy and Abe, just the way it should be.

IVY & ABE by Elizabeth is destined to become a huge success and in my opinion, would make a perfect fit for the silver screen. So waste no time and buy your copy now!

One Day by David Nicholls is one of my very favourite books so I was attracted to Ivy and Abe by the comparisons to that book. Ivy and Abe is rather unique though in that it’s not a continuing storyline, rather a series of intriguing vignettes. When is the right time to meet your soulmate? Now, I am a huge believer in fate and how one little change of direction can affect the ripples of time that spread out from that point but Elizabeth Enfield puts a totally different slant on this belief and each chapter has Ivy and Abe meeting for the first time at different points in their lives. The resulting relationships are all believable and with often unexpected outcomes.

It did take me a couple of chapters to feel comfortable with this unusual narrative and I would definitely recommend that you make sure you have time to read each complete chapter as each is a short story within itself and it’s definitely easier to follow one at a time. Each follows a different path, showing how age and circumstances come together to create believable and poignant snapshots of their love story. Sometimes things work and other times life and other mountains get in the way. I liked how it worked backwards starting with Ivy and Abe as pensioners and I think that the first story was possibly my favourite.

Elizabeth Enfield has crafted a mature love story that is full of emotion, using the “what if” scenario in a unique and timely manner. Her characters become unexpectedly familiar yet out of reach at the same time. There’s no predictability about any of realities explored with each one sharing a different path until we are back at the start and get to witness them meeting as children.

This is a moving and poignant love story between two wonderful characters that swept me away. Elizabeth Enfield writes beautifully with a true understanding of love, loss and friendship. Ivy and Abe will capture your heart in this unforgettable series of encounters that will make you think about lost opportunities, past loves and confirm that nothing in life is ever guaranteed so the time to grab your happiness is NOW!

to be honest, I expected a different thing and this was a little bit confusing, is was not a story, it was just some short stories from Ivy and Abe.

Additionally, there were no emotionals.. important things, like weddings, deaths etc got explained within a sentence - so there was no excitement..

Ivy And Abe by Elizabeth Enfield is a most unusual story with a unique plotline that I really enjoyed. It was very different from anything I had ever read.
"Life is a series of moments." It seems like a game of chance as we interact with different people at different times. Our lives intersect but just a minute of difference in time and it could be a whole new story. The novel follows Ivy and Abe as they meet at different times, different scenarios play out. It was all very cleverly done.
The characters were extremely likable. Their unique bond was visible throughout.
I certainly had my favourite scenario. I wonder which one yours will be?
A very unique idea, cleverly executed.
I will leave you with what I found the most poignant and beautiful lines:
"All you were ever really looking for was someone to hold your hand through life."

5 stars - a beautiful book that is well written with brilliant characters. The story centres on Ivy and Abe, and how their relationship develops and changes depending on when and how they meet. It shows that certain people are meant to be in our lives, and are meant to have an impact. It takes a bit of time to understand what is going on (basically there are a load of different timelines that take place in this book, its a bit sciency at the beginning but tries to explain what is going on, but think Sliding Doors). I loved the different stories that took place, and I fell in love with the two lead characters and their stories. I also loved the consistency points that happened throughout (the hay bales) giving a good grounding point for each story. The ending is amazing and made me smile and well up at the same time. I had to take a break.

I feel that I am not giving this book justice in this review, is a beautifully complex book that tells us that there are certain people we are destined to meet, and who will impact our lives, regardless of the decisions we make. Its amazing, the characters are well written and it is a purely character driven book, and I loved it.

Effectively, this is nothing more than a string of romance short stories (and in some instances, there isn't even any romance), so if you're expecting some kind of mystical or magical theme to explain all the different ways in which Ivy and Abe meet, you'll be disappointing.

Unfortunately, the vignettes don't really establish the characters strongly enough for you to care about them or root for Ivy and Abe. Lots of details across the multiverses change, presumably to reflect the theory behind what's supposed to be happening, but it only serves to make the novel more pointless - it would have been more interesting to keep all the details the same, simply changing the ages at which Ivy and Abe meet.

Underlying all of this is an interesting concept. It is an intriguing question to ask, whether someone is Mr Right, regardless of the circumstances or nature of meeting, but in some of the stories, Abe and/or Ivy are so unpleasant as to not be the same person at all, which very much defeats the purpose.

Overall, it's very disappointing.

Salve Confine,
tra una cosa e l'altra questo fine settimana ho letto un romanzo molto particolare, "Ti aspetterò" di Elizabeth Enfield, edito Garzanti, che ringrazio per l’invio del file.
Ivy ed Abe sono amici di infanzia, non appena si conoscono diventano inseparabili, tanto che diventano "IvyedAbe", tutto attaccato.
Poi qualcosa arriva a dividerli e i due ragazzini si perdono di vista per incontrarsi di nuovo quando entrambi hanno superato ormai la settantina.
Da quel momento decidono di passare il resto della loro vita insieme, riconoscendo che è sempre stato amore ciò che li ha legati allora e che li ha ritrovati adesso.
La vita li ha tenuti distanti e l'amore, forse il destino, li ha ricongiunti, ma cosa sarebbe successo se il caso avesse operato in maniera diversa sulle loro vite?
Se si fossero conosciuti in un altro momento?
Se si fossero reincontrati tempo prima?
E così ci ritroviamo a leggere ancora di Ivy ed Abe, tutti gli "e se..." che si sviluppano sotto i nostri occhi mentre leggiamo.
Si incontreranno per caso su una panchina a parlare delle loro storie d'amore o consumeranno un incontro fugace senza conoscere molto l'uno dell'altra, si incontreranno in un momento sbagliato o quando ormai è troppo tardi, tutte le possibili combinazioni a ritroso nel tempo.
Ma saranno sempre Ivy ed Abe, le loro strade che si incroceranno, incontreranno, andranno in parallelo e così via, fino a un finale inaspettato e meraviglioso.
"Credo che sia possibile incontrare la persona giusta nel momento giusto, la persona sbagliata nel momento giusto o la persona giusta nel momento sbagliato. Chissà che cosa sarebbe successo se ci fossimo rivisti in un’altra occasione."
"Ti aspetterò" è un romanzo che non mi sarei mai aspettata!
E scusate il gioco di parole ma sono davvero ancora molto elettrizzata da questa lettura, che ho terminato solo un paio di ore fa.
Ho voluto subito mettere su carta, o meglio su "Word", i miei pensieri, le mie emozioni, le mie considerazioni a riguardo, cosa che di regola non faccio mai, perché avevo paura di non riuscire a riprendere nella memoria le sensazioni che mi ha suscitato.
È un romanzo diverso, una storia d'amore raccontata in maniera nuova, dove il protagonista assoluto è il destino (o il caso o la coincidenza, come volete chiamarlo).
Ivy ed Abe, con il loro ritrovarsi quando ormai non si aspettavano più nulla dalla vita, ci insegnano che non è mai troppo tardi per l'amore, soprattutto non si può evitarlo quando il destino ha un disegno ben preciso da ricamare sulle nostre vite.
Tutti gli "E se..." di cui leggeremo ci faranno riflettere sul modo imperscrutabile che ha il destino, o chi per lui, di operare. Non importa il quando, il dove o il come, se due anime sono destinate a far parte l'una dell'altra, allora si incontreranno e si riconosceranno, così come Ivy ha la sensazione, ogni volta, di aver già visto o conosciuto Abe.
Le emozioni che ci regaleranno sono indiscusse, soprattutto dopo che ci abitueremo ai salti temporali e riusciremo ad empatizzare coi protagonisti.
Ammetto che in alcuni punti mi è riuscito difficile trovare il filo che mi legava alla storia, ma credo che una cosa del genere sia normale in un racconto come questo, dove i personaggi, che sono sempre gli stessi, in realtà cambiano ogni volta, perché sono persone nuove, forgiate da esperienze diverse fatte per avere preso decisioni diverse.
Nonostante questo intreccio di luoghi, tempi, persone, grazie allo stile leggero e chiaro dell'autrice, la lettura risulta scorrevole e veloce, dal ritmo costante.
Sebbene ci piacerà leggere di alcuni incontri e un po' meno di altri, apprezzeremo l'intero romanzo, o almeno io l'ho fatto, perché tratta un concetto che spesso tormenta il nostro animo, quello delle scelte che facciamo, giuste o sbagliate, e dei meccanismi che si mettono in moto, degli effetti che provocano nella nostra vita e su quella degli altri.
Non direi che "Ti aspetterò" sia una lettura leggera, da spiaggia, ma la consiglio per rendere più emozionanti queste notti caldi che ci trovani insonni.

Dieses Buch ist etwas ganz anderes. Als ich den Klappentext gelesen hatte, hatte ich mit einer Geschichte wie „Love, Rosie“ gerechnet. Dieses Buch ähnelt diesem nur ein wenig, aber das Interessante eigentlich ist, dass es nicht in der chronologischen Reihenfolge erzählt wurde. Wir lernen Ivy und Abe als 70 Jährige kennen bis hin wo sie noch Kinder sind. Und es erzählt keine Lebensgeschichte der beiden, sondern was passiert wäre, wenn sie sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt kennengelernt hätten. Schade, dass mir dies erst nach der Hälfte klar wurde, da ich anfangs sichtlich irritiert war und mir das etwas den Spaß am Lesen nahm, da es für mich unlogisch war. Weil mir bewusst war, dass ich etwas übersah.

Davon Mal abgesehen mochte ich die Hauptprotagonistin Ivy sehr. Wir lesen alles aus ihrer Sicht der Dinge über all die Jahre, wie sich jedes einzige Mal wieder in Abe verliebt. Es war immer schön anzusehen, wie zwischen den beiden ein unsichtbares Band war, welches sie zueinander brachte. All diese Geschichten, wie sie ausgingen. Und dieses Buch zeigte, dass es auch den falschen Zeitpunkt gab.

Das Leben ist nicht einfach. Besonders nicht das von Ivy, da es in ihrer Familie ein Gendefekt gibt, so dass sogar ihre Mutter und ihr Bruder nicht das 50. Lebensjahr erreichten. Ivy plagt ständig diese Unsicherheit, ob sie auch dieses Gen mit sich trägt, da die Wahrscheinlichkeit bei 50% liegt. So erleben wir in den verschiedenen Jahren, welches Stadium ihre Mutter hat, wie sie erfuhren, dass sie krank war und das es nicht die Menopause war, so wie anfänglich vermutet. Und auch wie diese Unsicherheit ihre Liebesbeziehungen beeinflusst.

Abe war mir auch sehr sympathisch. Wir lernen immer wieder einen liebevollen Mann kennen, der in Ivy seine Seelenverwandte findet. Doch es gibt sind immer andere Variablen vorhanden, in einer, wo er auch verheiratet ist. Doch trotzdem findet er einen Weg zu Ivy, was auch nicht unbedingt gut ausging.

Die Idee hatte mich sehr begeistert, doch wie gesagt, wurde mir das erst nach der Hälfte klar. Wäre das auf dem Klappentext geschrieben, so dass ich mich darauf einstellen hätte können, hätte mir das Buch definitiv besser gefallen.

Der Schreibstil war sehr angenehm. Auch wenn die Idee an sich mir gefallen hat, sowie die Charaktere, musste ich mich des öfteren selbst dazu motivieren weiter zu lesen, da es mich nicht all zu sehr gefesselt hatte. Dennoch flogen die Seiten davon, da der Schreibstil grandios war.

Zu dem Ende kann ich nicht all zu viel sagen, da an sich das Buch eine Sammlung aus vielen verschiedenen Geschichten ist. Es gab welche, die mir sehr gut gefallen hatten und andere, die etwas abrupt endeten, so dass ich hin und wieder auch schockiert war.

Fazit:
Ivy und Abe ist eine interessante Reise durch viele „Was wenn?“. Wie verschiedene Ausgangszustände sich auf eine Beziehung auswirken können. Das es doch manchmal nicht den richtigen Zeitpunkt gibt. Es ist eine sehr schöne Liebesgeschichte, die sich darin von anderen unterscheidet, dass es nicht in der chronologischen Reihenfolge erzählt wird und auf parallele Universen hindeutet. Wäre mir von Anfang an dies bewusst gewesen, hätte es mir definitiv besser gefallen, aber bis zur ersten Hälfte war ich verwirrt davon, dass sie sich in jedem neuem Jahr, in der eine neue Geschichte startete, nicht kannten. Dennoch ist es ein tolles Buch!

Das Buch ist mal etwas ganz Anderes. Es ist nicht chronologisch aufgebaut, sondern beginnt im Jahr 2026, in dem die beiden Protagonisten schon über 70 Jahre alt sind, und geht dann Rückwärts bis zurück in ihre Kindheit. Leider habe ich nicht sofort verstanden, dass die einzelnen Kapitel viele was-wäre-wenn-Kurzgeschichten sind und es sich nicht um die Lebensgeschichte der beiden handelt, wie ich nach dem Lesen des Klappentextes angenommen hätte. Dadurch bin ich mit falschen Erwartungen an das Buch herangegangen und war zunächst sehr verwirrt beim Lesen, was mich auch aus dem Lesefluss gebracht hat. Eigentlich hätte man dies aber schon früh merken können, da sich bereits eines der ersten Gespräche um die Quantentheorie dreht und darum ob es vielleicht Paralleluniversen gibt, in denen die beiden sich bereits früher getroffen haben.

Das ganze Buch dreht sich daher um die Frage, ob es für die Liebe einen richtigen Zeitpunkt gibt, aber auch Trauer, Verlust, Krankheit und Familie spielen eine große Rolle. Es war schön immer wieder zu sehen, was Ivy und Abe zusammenführt und wie sie sich immer wieder verlieben, dabei hat man als Leser einfach gemerkt, wie verbunden die beiden miteinander sind. Auch tauchen einige Objekte, wie ein Heuballen und ein Buch in vielen der Geschichten auf, jedoch wäre das für mich nicht notwendig gewesen.

Die Geschichte wird ausschließlich aus der Perspektive von Ivy erzählt.
Ivy leidet sehr, da ein Teil der Familie unter einem Gendefekt leidet, der dazu geführt hat, dass ihr Bruder und ihre Mutter schon früh sterben mussten und auch Ivy betreffen könnte. Diese Krankheit und die verschiedenen Stadien, die sie bei ihren Verwandten miterleben muss, kriegt man als Leser durch die Zeitsprünge mit und merkt, wie sehr sie ihre Liebesbeziehungen und ihren Charakter beeinflussen. Abe wiederum ist ein liebevoller und sympathischer Mann, in dem Ivy immer und immer wieder einen Seelenverwandten findet.

Der Schreibstil selbst war okay, oft wirkte zwar alles wie ein Bericht, dass hat mich beim Lesen aber nicht gestört.
Ich habe bei Büchern aber lieber kurze Kapitel und bin kein großer Fan von 50-Seiten-langen Abschnitten wie hier, auch wenn jedes der Kapitel eine andere Zeit abdeckt. Leider waren besonders diese „Kurzgeschichten“ in der ersten Hälfte des Buches sehr repetitiv, da sich kaum etwas an der Lebenssituation geändert hat. Als die beiden Protagonisten später im Buch jünger sind gab es zum Glück etwas mehr Abwechslung und das Lesen hat wieder etwas mehr Spaß gemacht.

Fazit:
Die Idee des Buches an sich hat mir sehr gut gefallen, die Umsetzung lässt aber zu wünschen übrig. Ich hätte es besser gefunden, wenn der Inhalt des Buches schon aus dem Klappentext klargeworden wäre und ich habe es eher als Sammlung vieler Kurzgeschichten als als zusammengehöriges Buch empfunden. Mir fehlte leider einfach die Spannung oder wenigstens die Aussicht auf ein richtiges Ende. Dadurch, dass ich persönlich die „Kurzgeschichten“ als viel zu repetitiv empfunden habe kann ich dem Buch auch nur 3 Sterne geben.

I was attracted by the blurb and the cover of Ivy and Abe, which is why I chose this book. It started off very well with the first story being about how Ivy and Abe are childhood friends who meet each other after many years.

But as I read on, the charm started wearing off. The short stories have a few constants, like Ivy, Abe, and Richard, some of the children, a truck with bales of hay, and being architects and fountain designers, among other others. The stories didn't seem very complete, and they felt very rushed. For example, in the first story, it seemed like it was all too facile for Ivy and Abe to sort out things and get married. I am not disgruntled that things went very smoothly for them but the fact that all decisions by everyone there seemed too fast.

I liked the concept of the book, and I did like a few passages here and there. But I could not read on halfway through the book. The repetitive 'what if's' without too much going for them did not give me incentive to continue.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, though I guess 'enjoy' is potentially the wrong word to use. There are some stories that are combinations of joyful moments or happy scenarios and others that combine the good and the bad. I feel this book was a combination of good and bad and honestly depicted strikingly relatable happenings in the lives we lead.

It's a book that you need to concentrate on as you read. The subtle changes and pieces of knowledge that become important as the book unfolds, make huge differences. Look at character names or hints at potential problems characters face.

I went into this book with no knowledge of it whatsoever and that made the experience even better, hence why I am trying to write as little as possible.

For me, I finished the book feeling satisfied. Admittedly, it did lose it's momentum in the final 50 pages or so and I felt more could have been achieved. The final chapter was perfect though and ended it well.

Overall, this felt rather refreshing and a different take on fictional narratives and character progression, that echoed One Day and even Disney's Up in places. I recommend. x

This reminded me very much of Versions of Us, and though it didn’t grab me in the way I’d hoped it was certainly a charming story.
Part of me expected there would be an element of cohesion to the novel, but it really is made up of a series of stories featuring Ivy and Abe. We see them at different times and in different circumstances; sometimes they are friends, sometimes they are lovers and sometimes they are nothing more than passing acquaintances. Whatever the situation, they have some form of bond. There are recurring motifs throughout the stories, but it was a little confusing to establish exactly how they all fitted together.
This isn’t particularly fast-moving, and though it captured my interest as I read I don’t feel either of the characters or the scenarios will remain in my mind. Though not really what I expected I did enjoy it, and can see it striking a chord with many readers. Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this prior to publication.

It was very interesting to follow the various timelines and alternative versions of Ivy and Abe. I found the last two, the young Ivy and Abe and later life Ivy and Abe the most touching, the others I felt were written to play with the idea, with the hay bales, Fred the tortoise, the Van der Zees swimming pool and the hereditary illness and were more of a technical exercise to make a point about the multiverse, I didn’t find them as involving. Having said that as I gradually noticed the repetitions I did think it would be interesting to re-read the book and spot them from the start, to appreciate the nuances, however, there are too many other books waiting to be read to actually embark on that.

A sweet story told in quite an original way. Ivy and Abe's love story is told and retold to show what would have happened if they had met at different times in their lives. Would they have survived as a couple had they met as children, as teenagers, as 20 somethings, etc.

My only criticism would be that in the later years narratives there is a lot more telling than doing and it gets a little slow and boring but as the years go back and into the earlier years of their lives the narrative is a lot more dynamic.

A charming and beautifully written compilation of short stories all about the relationship between Ivy and Abe in a multiverse where they meet at varying times in their lives but always find themselves drawn to each other.
The only thing I found confusing was trying to remember which Ivy and Abe I was dealing with when I had a break in reading. Still a very enjoyable read.

Das Buch war toll, hat mich etwas an die Frau des Zeitreisenden erinnert. Es war auch teilweise verwirrend, so viele Geschichten mit verschiedenen Alternativen. Das Ende war gut, aber die Reise bis dahin eine reine Achterbahnfahrt 🎢 ⛲️

This book was a 4.6 because it kept me gripped as I wanted to see the fate of the characters. The two characters are Ivy and Abe, but the story is told from Ivy’s viewpoint. The story is basically about parallel universes or timelines and how these two people meet and their relationship. It’s amazing to think that one small choice can alter so much.

Ti aspetterò di Elizabeth Enfield, romanzo di narrativa rosa, in uscita oggi, 30 maggio grazie a Garzanti Editore.

«Credo che sia possibile incontrare la persona giusta nel momento giusto, la persona sbagliata nel momento giusto o la persona giusta nel momento sbagliato. Chissà che cosa sarebbe successo se ci fossimo rivisti in un’altra occasione Poteva essere il momento sbagliato per entrambi, e non c’è modo di far tornare indietro l’orologio.»

Ivy ed Abe si conoscono da bambini e diventano, da subito, amici inseparabili. Sono come una giovane coppia sposata da anni, così diceva la madre di Abe quando li vedeva insieme. Tra loro non c’era imbarazzo, non c’erano silenzi, sin da bambini era esplosa una bellissima sintonia. Erano quel tipo di amici “a cui la gente si riferisce tutto d’un fiato: IvyedAbe”. Ma poi, un grave lutto nella famiglia di Abe, aveva fatto prendere alla madre la decisione di trasferirsi e dividere quei due ragazzi che, sin dal loro primo incontro, si erano in qualche modo amati.

Quando cominciarono a scorrere le lacrime che mi ero rifiutata di versare davanti a mia madre, fantasticai che in uno di quei mondi riflessi avrei incontrato Abe in un altro momento e che le cose sarebbero andate diversamente.

Ma cosa sarebbe successo se il destino, la vita, i momenti, gli attimi, avessero seguito strade diverse? E se Ivy e Abe si fossero rincontrati? E se si fossero conosciuti in un altro momento? E se … e se … comincia così la narrazione di questa storia d’amore, che non è una storia sola, ma più storie, in diversi luoghi e diversi momenti, ma i cui protagonisti sono sempre loro, Ivy e Abe. A settant’anni, quando ormai entrambi non sperano più di potersi permettere ancora la felicità, a sessant’anni seduti su una panchina a cercare spazio tra due amori finiti, ma che ancora reclamano il loro posto, a cinquantacinque anni, in un momento fugace vissuto tra due persone sconosciute. In una vita Ivy è stata un’amante, in un’altra una moglie tradita, una volta si erano trovati, ma troppo tardi, in un’altra han creduto di amarsi, ma non era il momento giusto, da giovani avevano fatto scelte differenti, lei voleva viaggiare, lui voleva laurearsi … una serie infinita di possibilità e di vite, in cui il destino ha finito per metterli sempre uno, sulla strada dell’altro.

«Ti sei mai chiesta», domandò Abe quella notte, prendendomi la mano mentre eravamo sdraiati a letto, «come sarebbe andata se ci fossimo incontrati in un altro periodo della nostra vita?»
«Ma è successo.»
«Intendo in seguito, non da bambini. Se ci fossimo incontrati al momento giusto.»

Voi vi siete mai persi negli “e se…” della vita? Ci avete mai pensato? Io tantissime volte. E se avessi studiato un anno all’estero? E se non avessi accettato questo lavoro? E se ci fossimo lasciati quella volta?
È curioso mettersi a pensare a come sarebbero andate le cose se avessimo fatto scelte diverse, se avessimo incontrato la persona giusta al momento sbagliato o la persona sbagliata al momento giusto. Mi piace pensare che, il destino abbia un piano per noi, e fa in modo, prima o poi, di ricondurci alle persone a cui siamo destinati. Magari quando abbiamo perso le speranze, magari dopo anni di sofferenza, chi può dirlo? Certo è che, la versione romantica delle infinite possibilità di Ivy ed Abe mi ha aperto il cuore. Non sempre c’è stato il lieto fine, eppure loro erano lì, in qualche modo, in quel momento e in quel luogo. Perché come dice la correlazione quantistica: «gli elettroni, che hanno interagito in passato e poi si sono separati, pur allontanandosi milioni di chilometri o di galassie l’uno dall’altro, continuano a influenzarsi reciprocamente. Solleticando una particella, l’altra danzerà.»
Proprio come Ivy e Abe, che separati quando erano bambini, si sono continuamente ritrovati, non importa in che momento, non importa quali scelte avessero fatto, ma per loro era inevitabile. L’amore, in fondo, non conosce regole e sa sempre come sorprenderci, come trovare la sua metà a dispetto di qualsiasi logica.

E proprio le parole che Abe ripete ogni volta: “ Sono così felice di averti trovata”, “adesso che ti ho incontrata, non voglio lasciarti andare”, Volevo soltanto dirti che sono felice di averti incontrata”, “Da quando ti ho incontrata non riesco a pensare ad altro…” generano una sorta di déjà-vu, Ivy non riesce a spiegarselo ma, le fanno provare la sensazione di conoscere Abe da sempre, di averlo già incontrato e di sentirsi completa solo con lui accanto.

Il romanzo è indubbiamente ben scritto, con continui flash back all’interno di ogni capitolo/episodio/momento di vita, che aiutano il lettore a contestualizzare meglio la storia. Più si procede nella lettura, più le vite dei personaggi, la loro caratterizzazione le loro scelte, prendono forma e senso. Come già vi dicevo, ogni capitolo è una parte differente della vita di Ivy e Abe, si procede a ritroso, dai 70 anni fino ai 18 circa, e ci propone storie differenti, eppure, in qualche modo, legate. Proprio come sostiene la legge di Murphy: “Se qualcosa deve accadere, non c’è modo di impedirlo. Non significa necessariamente che accadrà a te. Può darsi che la tua fetta di pane non cada sul lato imburrato, ma lo farà quella di qualcun altro.” Non sono le circostanze a cambiare, sono le persone e il riflesso di ciò che accade loro, a darci una dimensione diversa, a farci vivere da un’altra prospettiva.

Non so se vi ho incasinato più le idee o se vi ho incuriosito. Ammetto di aver faticato un pochino all’inizio, continuavo a perdermi nella conta degli anni, e poi ad ogni capitolo, mi sembrava di iniziare ogni volta un libro nuovo e faticavo a resettare; invece man mano che procedevo nella lettura, ne ero sempre più affascinata: ognuna di quelle vite narrate sono infatti legate in qualche modo e presentate nelle diverse sfaccettature. Trovo questo romanzo sorprendente e credo sia qualcosa di nuovo, che esula dalla classica storia d’amore con il “vissero felici e contenti”. Direi davvero un ottimo esordio per Elizabeth Enfield, che, anche se con un sottofondo dai toni forse malinconici e commoventi, ci regala l’idea dell’amore unico, che non si arrende, mai, e fa di tutto per ricongiungere due anime gemelle.

Rezension zu Ivy & Abe von Elisabeth Enfield

Ich habe diese Buch gelesen und leider etwas ganz anderes erwartet. Ich habe auf einen süßen Liebesroman gehofft, der sich leicht verschlingen lässt, leider wurde ich doch sehr enttäuscht.

Hier handelt es sich um aneinandergereihte Kurzgeschichten, die sich um die Protagonisten Ivy und Abe drehen und aus der Sicht von Ivy erzählt werden. Das Buch beginnt als die Protagonisten 70 Jahre alt sind und werden erzählt bis die beiden Protagonisten 10 Jahre alt sind und sich das erste Mal begegnen, also in der chronologischen Reihenfolge, jedoch von alt nach Jung.

An und für sich finde ich diese Idee eigentlich ganz gut und auch diese „Was wäre gewesen wenn?“ Vorstellung, wie man sie auch aus dem wahren Leben kennt richtig gut, dennoch mangelte es hier an der Umsetzung. Das Buch konnte mich leider nicht packen und ich musste mich schon selbst echt überreden es wieder in die Hand zu nehmen.

Ich denke das dieses Buch eher etwas für die Generation ü40 ist und dennoch ist es auch mal etwas ganz anderes was ich vorher so noch nie gelesen habe.

Ich gebe diesem Buch 2 von 5 Sternen da ich die Grundidee gut gefunden habe und das Cover wunderschön ist. Leider überwiegen hier dennoch die negativen Aspekte.

This is a book about chances and opportunities and explores whether the situations we find ourselves in are the ones we were destined to have or were there other, alternate versions of our lives being lived out elsewhere. Whilst I understood what Elizabeth Enfield was trying to achieve and why she used this particular narrative device of many Ivy & Abes it didn't really resonate with me unfortunately. I really struggled to connect with the characters because they were so vastly different between each alternate life and this made it difficult to have any empathy or sympathy with either of them. The 'mystery' of Ivy's possible illness was the reason I kept reading it and although I understood the fear and her gratitude that she was loved regardless it didn't feel like a big enough pay off for me unfortunately.

Kürzlich habe ich den Roman von Elizabeth Enfield aus dem Diana-Verlag gelesen: „Ivy & Abe“, die etwas andere Liebesgeschichte, ist am 18.09.2017 erschienen.


Ivy und Abe – zwei Menschen, die füreinander bestimmt sind. Sie begegnen sich zu verschiedenen Zeiten in ihrem Leben. Doch das perfekte Glück verpassen sie immer. Mal wechseln sie ein paar Worte in einem Café, dann trennen sich ihre Wege wieder. Ein anderes Mal haben sie eine Affäre miteinander. Später sind sie verheiratet, aber ihre Ehe steckt in einer tiefen Krise. Ihr Leben lang tragen Ivy und Abe etwas von dem anderen in sich. Innige Momente, in denen sie ihre Liebe spüren. Wird sie je von Dauer sein?


Zuerst einmal muss ich sagen, dass ich mich riesig darüber gefreut habe, dieses Rezensionsexemplar bestätigt bekommen zu haben, da mich die Idee des Romans von Anfang an sehr angesprochen hat. Leider sind mir während des Lesens jedoch einige Kritikpunkte an der Umsetzung aufgefallen.

Der Einstieg in die Geschichte fiel mir als Leserin zunächst sehr schwer und ich würde behaupten, dass ich bis zum Ende nicht richtig in die Handlung eintauchen konnte. Zum einen liegt dies daran, dass der Schreibstil oftmals eher einer Nacherzählung gleicht: Der Leser kann die Handlung nicht selbst miterleben, sondern sie wird lediglich erzählt, sodass es alles in allem teilweise einem Bericht und keinem Roman ähnelte. Oftmals wird dies durch die Selbstreflexion Ivys hervorgerufen. Mich hat der Schreibstil im Lesefluss leider gebremst, da durch den Charakter der Nacherzählung gar keine Spannung aufkommen konnte.

Wie bereits erwähnt, habe ich mich sehr auf die Idee des Romans gefreut. Allerdings ist zu bemängeln, dass der Klappentext meiner Meinung nach den Roman in keinster Weise so darstellt, wie er wirklich ist. Betrachtet man als Leser den Klappentext, so erwartet man eine zusammenhängende Liebesgeschichte von zwei Menschen, die sich immer wieder finden und dann aus den Augen verlieren. In Wahrheit findet der Leser hier aber viele verschiedene Kurzgeschichten wieder, welche abgeschlossen sind und keine Auswirkungen aufeinander haben. Die Kurzgeschichten repräsentieren somit immer, wie es hätte sein können, wenn Ivy und Ave sich zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt begegnet wären. Dadurch, dass die Gesamtgeschichte so in viele, nicht zusammenhängende Teile gespalten wird, verliert der Roman schnell an Reiz. Noch dazu ist dem Leser zu Beginn des Buchs nicht klar, dass es sich um abgeschlossene Kurzgeschichten handelt, bei denen die Protagonisten zwar gleich sind, dies aber nichts mit den vorherigen Geschichten zu tun hat. So habe ich mich beispielsweise 100 Seiten lang extrem gewundert, warum die Hauptpersonen in ihrem späteren Leben eine angeblich vorherige Beziehung vergessen hätten. Aus meiner Sicht sollte dem Leser direkt klar sein, dass es sich um verschiedene Geschichten handelt, was sich der Leser hier aber selbst erschließen muss. Sonst kommt es dazu, dass man – so wie ich – mit falschen Erwartungen an diesen Roman herantritt.

Zudem ist es so, dass sich alle Versionen von Ivys und Abes Leben stark ähneln. Dies ist natürlich verständlich, aber nach einer Weile verschwindet die Spannung, schon wieder zu lesen, wie sich Ivy und Abe zufällig treffen, sich daraus eventuell eine Beziehung entwickelt und ihre Wege sich – wie der Klappentext bereits treffend formuliert – wieder trennen. Mir hätte es deutlich besser gefallen, wenn die Kurzgeschichten sich stärker voneinander differenzieren ließen, d.h. wenn die Charakterzüge der Protagonisten sich auch durch die verschiedenen Verläufe ihres Lebens geändert hätten. Dies wäre psychologisch sehr viel realistischer gewesen, war aber bei Ivy und Abe in den Geschichten nicht der Fall. Auf diese Art und Weise ziehen sich die Seiten jedoch extrem aufgrund der enormen Ähnlichkeit der Kurzgeschichten.

Des Weiteren ist es so, dass die Kurzgeschichten untereinander Zeitsprünge aufweisen. Eine erzählt z.B. die Begegnung von Ivy und Abe, als sie 10 Jahre alt sind, die andere mit 70 Jahren. Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt ist daher aus meiner Sicht, dass sich der Erzählstil nicht dem Alter der Protagonisten anpasst. Obgleich die Hauptpersonen 70 oder 10 Jahre alt sind, in der Sprache ist dies nicht merkbar.

Aber auch die einzelnen Kurzgeschichten weisen jeweils weitere Zeitsprünge auf. Man kann sagen, dass die Geschichten definitiv nicht in der chronologischen Reihenfolge wiedergegeben werden. Zusammen mit Ivys gedanklicher Selbstreflexion wird der Lesefluss und vor allem Zeitüberblick erheblich gestört.

Um das kritische Bild etwas zu revidieren: Die Idee der Autorin, zu zeigen, wie das eigene Leben hätte verlaufen können, wenn man sich an mancher Stelle anders entschieden hätte, regt wunderbar zum Nachdenken an und ist in gewisser Weise sehr philosophisch angehaucht. Trotz meiner Kritikpunkte war es interessant zu sehen, wie sich unterschiedliche Gegebenheiten unterschiedlich auf Ivy und Abe ausgewirkt haben. Das Buch gibt insofern eine wichtige Botschaft für das eigene Leben mit: Manchmal kommt der Richtige zum falschen Zeitpunkt oder der Falsche zum richtigen Zeitpunkt.

Zusammengefasst konnte mich die Idee von „Ivy & Abe“ mit vielen kleinen Lebensweisheiten überzeugen. Durch die Umsetzung, welche leider Raum für viel Kritik meinerseits ließ, habe ich den Roman jedoch nur bedingt genossen.

-> Wieso wollte ich dieses Buch lesen?
Ich bin durch Zufall auf dieses Buch aufmerksam geworden, da ich zu den Buchflüsterern gehöre und dieses Buch als Leseexemplar zugesendet bekam.

Das Cover zeigt Ivy und Abe in jungen Jahren - bzw. deren Schatten und gefällt mir ehrlich gesagt richtig gut!

-> Story + Charaktere:
"Ivy & Abe" beinhaltet 11 "Kurzgeschichten" in denen es immer um Ivy und Abe geht. Dabei fängt die erste Geschichte an, als die beiden ca. 70 Jahre alt sind und man geht in der Zeit immer weiter zurück, bis man in ihrer Kindheit angelangt, als die beiden etwa 10 Jahre alt sind.

Die Geschichten von Ivy & Abe zeugen von einer gewissen Schwere, da sie sich so sehr wollen und doch nie das perfekte Glück finden... doch so richtig kann man die einzelnen Geschichten dann doch nicht als kompletten Roman empfinden - bedingt durch den Stil der einzelnen Kurzgeschichten. Dieser Stil störte mich massiv und unterbrach einfach den Lesefluss - was ich sehr schade fand. Ich bin sicher, als komplette Geschichte (auch vom Alter her abwärts) wäre die Geschichte viel besser angekommen und man hätte sich als Leser viel besser einfühlen können.

Auch fand ich keinen rechten Zugang zu den Protagonisten und konnte deren Emotionen nicht wirklich nachempfinden - was vermutlich ebenfalls an dem Kurzgeschichtenstil lag.

-> Schreibstil:
Der Schreibstil selbst ist angenehm, auch wenn ich ab und an etwas Probleme hatte, mich in die einzelnen Zeitepochen einzulesen. Geschrieben wird die Geschichte stets aus Sicht der Ivy.

-> Gesamt:
Insgesamt kam ich mit dem Kurzgeschichten-Stil nicht wirklich zurecht und hätte mir eher einen fortlaufenden Roman gewünscht - dann hätte ich mich vielleicht auch mehr auf die Charaktere und deren Handlungsweisen / Emotionen einlassen können.
