A crazed, muderous Russian billionaire seeking immortality steals an ancient chest lid from a secret society and unknowingly unleashes hell on earth.
His chief scientist, Dr. Lauren Martinez, watches in horror as her patient transforms into something otherworldly. She fights for her life as the creature goes on a killing spree.
An ancient intelligence awakens deep beneath the Egyptian desert.
The bubonic plague, smallpox, and many other diseases aren’t what we think they were because history is wrong...
I'm always game for a good zombie story, especially one with a different twist. In Awakening, M.C. Bass takes the usual zombie apocalypse scenario and adds in an ancient plague curse and nanotechnology. The results? A really good zombie tale with great sci-fi elements and lots of action!
Dr. Lauren Martinez is in Russia working on nanotechnology that could extend the human life span, possibly indefinitely The experiments aren't going very well though. Becoming impatient, the man financing the research comes across an ancient box that contains ancient Egyptian technology. Although he is warned not to open the box, he does so anyway. And....BOOM....the apocalypse descends. Cue grisly deaths, narrow escapes and nano-zombies running amok everywhere.....
This book is a mix of sci-fi, zombie horror and military action story. I'm always up for a guns-blazing action story...the zombies were just the cherry on top the cupcake for me. Made for a great afternoon of entertaining reading!
Awakening is the first book in the Ancient Purge series. The second book, Evolution, continues the story, as the zombie outbreak threatens humanity. I already have book 2 queued up on my Kindle. Book one ended on a cliffhanger....and I have to know what happens next! :)
From page one you're up to your wars in edgy, nail biting, knew jumping action. You start out in the mind of a doctor, fighting her fear and trying to get away from a very bad situation. She's forced to forsake her Hippocratic oath, and is terrified or the man she works for. This is the perfect blamed of humanism, military might, humor in a dark situation, and compassion in the face human annihilation. The technology that is written in these pages are amazing. The nano tech is being improved upon every year and can do miraculous things even now. The way Bass wrote this story you can come to fear something like this happening in the near future. It was/is profound and terrifying. This would be one hell of a great movie. Similar to zombies but not zombies. I believe this is one book to pick up this year. You have drama, humor, humanity, compassion, bravery and the courageous hearts of our people. Facing a truly devastating future of creatures the evolve faster than should be humanly possible.
I enjoy reading Zombie genre books. But after reading so many, most are formulaic. Awakening (Ancient Purge 1) is NOT your typical genre novel. Immediately the author begins a roller coaster ride for the reader. There's a little bit of Tom Clancy-type explanations but they are necessary for the characters to fully develop within the plot. There is also excellent characters with extremely clever names and the things they do. I'm writing generally because I don't want to give away the enjoyment you'll have. Excellent book. p.s., I'm not a "shill." I'm doing this because I love to read and think creative writers like Mr. Bass are due paying attention to. I already started the second in the series. :)
Ok, I admit I will call them zombie books are not my cup of tea. Mr. Bass at least to me spent to much time on the 'creatures', and not enough time on the science behind and in front of this. I will give him credit for his proper use of weapons, some good research went into this. I at least now want to see what happens next with the good Dr. and her boyfriend - who just happens to be a Tier 1 Seal, has in store.
I loved this book!! It was just enough of all things to make the story believable. I think I could join the military...or become a scientist..or a CIA agent with the knowledge this book provided. It was entertaining and informative ....and I'm heading straight for book 2. Thanks MC Bass!!
Enjoyable with an interesting premise. Good relatable characters and well thought out settings . Some editing errors, but not too many. Looking forward to the next in the series.
An interesting variation on the end of the world zombie hoards. An ancient scourge is released......then the book just suddenly ends. Whew! I dislike cliffhanger endings in books. Otherwise this is not a bad story, just not a really great one.
