All Through the Night by Maggie Robinson
Four stars
Carrie Moore is dismayed to miss the last ferry, especially when it means she's stranded with her employer's turkey for Christmas dinner. She soon realizes that not only is she stuck with a frozen bird, her employer's beloved nephew, Griffin Archer, is also trapped in the same dire straits. The strengthening storm means they have to quickly find improvised shelter.

Maggie Robinson's forced proximity is fun, flirty, and charming. Carrie and Griffin make the most of their evening, and it isn't hard to imagine their growing attraction and camaraderie lasting beyond the melting snow.

While It Was Snowing by Elyssa Patrick
Four stars
Felicity and Harry have been best friends for years and years, since they became neighbors when they were seven. So when Felicity notices Harry looking at her differently, she decides to address it head on.

Elyssa Patrick's characters feel very real and relatable. Felicity is a go-getter, and is willing to take a chance. Harry is simply a more cautious soul. Their friendship is everything to him, and he's not willing to ruin it on a whim. These two need to work through their differences carefully, and watching them navigate the minefield that a romance can sometimes be is definitely ultimately satisfying.

A terrific duet of Christmas cheer!

All Through the Night by Maggie Robinson 99 pages 4.5* 12/7/18

This was a light and entertaining Christmas novel - even if not very realistic . Since I liked the characters, plot development (all but the mentioned issue) and the writing style pretty much I was willing to overlook this one big issue in this case.

Since I expected the novella to be very fun (a romantic comedy according to blurb) and didn't find it very humorous I just can't give it the full 5* though with an additional bonus for the language I think a very strong 4.5* rating is fitting.
I'm very interested to improve my English languge skills and learn as much as I can about the differences between British and American English: the two main character's parts and language (including internal mologues / thoughts) mirror their backgrounds so well I learned some new expressions and differences between those two English 'languages'.

While It Was Snowing by Elyssa Patrick 70 pages 3.5* 12/7/18

This one's tough to rate - the first four chapters of the book was so great I expected it to be a 6* book - it's fun, great characters, sweet romance with much steam between the characters and nice development.
Than it all crashed so much I wasn't able to read through the next three chapters in one go and switched to other books to cool down (and it bacame a 0* story for me at that point).
The last chapter was much better again but still not that good I could imaginge to give the novella 4* but don't think 3* fair - so I'm going for unsatisfactory 3.5*.

Holiday for Two, a duet of Christmas novellas:

All Through the Night by Maggie Robinson - Carrie Moore is a personal assistant who gets stranded during a snow storm with her employer’s attractive nephew, who just happens to be an English lord. Griffin Archer has been working hard to try to repair the damage his father left to his inheritance, and his fiancee has decided an earl was a better catch, so taking shelter in a carriage house with his aunt’s assistant is not what he was looking for on Christmas Eve. It might not be what they wanted, but it turns out it’s exactly what they needed.

While It Was Snowing by Elyssa Patrick - Felicity Evans has realized her best friend Harry Walsh has been noticing her lately and has decided to get him alone in his parent’s cabin and seduce him, since she’s realized she loves him. All does not go as planned, with a series of humorous events and misunderstandings until the happily ever after finally arrives. I enjoyed the humor and to see just how much they hadn’t shared with each other, even though they were best friends, was entertaining.

The first half of this duet, All Through the Night by Maggie Robinson, was absolutely wonderful. Four stars and a delightful read. Truly enjoyed it. The second half of this duet, While It Was Snowing by Elyssa Patrick was hard to read. Two stars at best. It was wanting and longing, turned into fighting and hating. Dreadful. Although advertised as a Christmas book, it was not.

Sweet hookups

I was surprised how both books turned out. I didn't not like it but it was like a speed date. The characters were good likeable and the weather perfect too.

Disclosure: I received this copy from Maggie Robinson. (Maggie wasn't expecting me to review it because it is contemporary, but I did. Thank you, Maggie and Elyssa!) And, yes, this is an honest review.

* * *

This is two firsts for Love Saves the World : my first contemporary review and my first anthology review.

When Maggie Robinson mentioned she was releasing a Christmas story, I was intrigued. Then she added that it would be a contemporary and that really, really piqued my curiosity ( I even asked her about it in her feature on my blog ). And, finally, when she mentioned that she would be writing about an English viscount working in America, that sealed the deal -- I knew I needed to read this story.

Holiday for Two also gave me the chance to read a new author, Elyssa Patrick (who is one of Maggie's critique partners).

So, here goes:

All Through the Night by Maggie Robinson
The word "Kindle" in the first few pages of this novella was jarring to me and reminded me that I was no longer reading a historical romance. ^_^

The two novellas have the same set-up: snowbound on Christmas Eve. In this case, it's Carrie, the personal assistant to a world-famous mystery writer and Griffin, an honest-to-goodness viscount and nephew of said writer. Carrie's quirky and brash (and very American) and Griffin is very reserved, staid (and very British) -- but, missing the last ferry and a snowstorm forces this unlikely pairing to break into a nearby carriage house to seek shelter.

I liked the contrast between the hero and heroine and the witty banter that results from their differences. (Though, I felt it stereotyped each culture just a little, little bit.) The author's challenge was how to get these two strangers in a romantic situation in such a short period of time (overnight) and she accomplishes this through a fantasy story weaved by the two: of how they would have met if they had been in England instead of the US.

"I haven't seen you here before, have I?" I thought I knew all the pretty girls in the village."

She set her cup down with a splash. "Oh, really, just no. None of this pretty girl business. And don't ask what's my sign. You're being cheesy."

Griffin brushed his hair back. He did have that floppy High Grant hair thing going on. "We are at the Cheese and Plunder. Well, what should I say?"
- p. 61

I LOVED that story -- and wished it was longer because it left me breathless how Griffin would've "picked up" Carrie at the pub in his town. I also enjoyed the self-reference to romance novels as well, how Carrie kept thinking of all the novels she read and how Griffin reminded her a bit of Mr. Darcy.

Lastly, how Robinson chose to end her novella was very well done: a great balance of Christmas magic as well as modern reality. ^_^

While It Was Snowing by Elyssa Patrick
As I said, Elyssa Patrick is a new-to-me author but, I will tell you now, the minute Elyssa decides to publish a historical romance, I will be first in line to pre-order a copy. She's a fun, quirky writer and I'm definitely curious how her vision, voice, and characters would translate to a historical setting.

I love Felicity! The author captures her spark so well! I laughed so hard at her first attempt at seducing Harry -- and Harry was endearing with all of his insecurities. Felicity and Harry are childhood friends who yearn to take their relationship to the next level. Felicity has a plan and Harry has his worries -- trapped in a cabin during a snowstorm, our hero and heroine need to work through the transitional/awkward phase as they tentatively move from friends to lovers.

There's a very real conversation that happens between the two friends and it's at once painful and wonderful how they work through their issues and Harry finally figures out his way into Felicity's heart.

Just like that they were kissing.

A touch of lips, a hello. An introduction. Pleased to make your acquaintance. May I kiss you some more? It was new, this sensation. Feeling her soft, full mouth on his. How she did the impossible and tasted better than candy, better than apple pie with drizzled sea-salt caramel sauce. How suddenly he wasn't afraid anymore of the unknown because this was Felicity -- and kissing her was everything he had hoped for and more.
- p. 148

As a whole, both novellas were very enjoyable to read and are great introductions to these two authors' writing styles. Holiday for Two is a recommended read for this Christmas Season and even during the summer, when it is sweltering hot.

When I saw Elyssa Patrick had written a Christmas novella, I was ecstatic. I read and loved her novel Stay With Me a few months ago, so naturally when I saw this I immediately added it to my TBR pile!

All Through the Night by Maggie Robinson was first. It was a light-hearted, cute story about two strangers (kind of) that get stranded together for a night, since they missed the last ferry to their destination. I say kind of strangers because Carrie Moore knows of Lord Griffin Archer and he knows of her. He is her employer's nephew and is headed to see his Aunt for Christmas. Carrie knows he's off limits as he is engaged to someone else (oh and he's a Viscount for pete's sake!), but she can't help but notice how attractive he is.

Carrie was a humorous character. Her inner-monologue made me laugh and it cracked me up watching her try to use English expressions with him. He, on the other hand, really was a bit stuffy to start. Griffin clearly lives on the straight and narrow and is not happy with how he and Carrie had to procure their staying arrangements for the night. However, his stuffy demeanor starts to fade away as the night wears on and he finds himself surprised to be thinking of Carrie in more than a friendly way. She is not his usual type at all, but then again, nothing about their situation is usual. It's easy to pretend to be people you're not and do things you wouldn't normally do. That is exactly what happens with Carrie and Griffin.

I did feel that Griffin acted a bit out of character at the end of the book and I had trouble determining whether or not he was serious or not. That was the only thing that threw me that I felt could have been left out.

Overall, Robinson provides us with the right amount of steam and humor to make this a fun, enjoyable read.

"I'm not sure what a prat is," Miss Moore said, "but it sounds about right. And you should call me Carrie. If you don't mind, I don't think I can Lord Archer you all night, either. Is it okay if I call you Griffin? I won't get beheaded for my lack of etiquette?"

"Alas, my sword is in my other suitcase."

While It Was Snowing by Elyssa Patrick concluded the duet and I found myself laughing out loud during it. I must admit, it went a completely different direction than I expected from reading the blurb. While, I enjoyed this one, I found myself quite frustrated with our main characters Felicity and Harry.

Felicity and Harry have been best friends forever. Both of them have harbored feelings for one another, but have never acted on them. Now, Felicity has decided she's tired of hiding from Harry. The two find themselves together at their parents cabin and Felicity wants to show Harry how she feels. However, much awkward hilarity ensues. Seriously, I was cracking up reading this. Let's just say the old whipped cream bikini did not exactly work out in Felicity's favor.

Felicity is a fun character. She is bold, brazen, and not afraid to put herself out there. Harry, on other hand, has an adorable geekiness to him. There were some points where I wanted to bop him over the head for being so dense and naïve. Even though he has been in love with Felicity for a long time and she is finally offering herself to him, he freaks out. He wants her, desperately, but he is terrified of ruining their friendship. He lets his self-consciousness and his doubts weave their way in and ends up making their time together really strained.

I felt Felicity and Harry were both a bit immature in their reactions to each other. In fact, I really want to knock their skulls together and yell at them for being so ridiculous. Harry is afraid of not only their friendship being damaged beyond repair, but he is also afraid of being hurt by her. Which in turn, hurts her because she is appalled he would even think that way about her. Both are incredibly stubborn individuals, but after some introspection, Harry realizes that losing Felicity completely would hurt even more.

If you are looking for a holiday read that will provide you a good laugh, this is definitely the novella to pick up.

4 STARS

Holiday for Two is a Christmas duology by authors Maggie Robinson (whom I’ve never read) and Elyssa Patrick (whom I’ve read and love). This is two novella sized holiday stories packaged together for one low price. The stories are not connected other than they both take place during the holiday season but both are provide some sexy holiday fun.

All Through the Night by Maggie Robinson 4.0 stars

This is one of those books that makes me smile, two very different people wind up stranded on Christmas Eve during a blinding snowstorm. After finding shelter, they soon find themselves immersed in a little role playing which allows them to step outside of their lives and have some sexy fun. The light of the day brings a whole host of new issues but sometimes life has a way of working obstacles out.

Carrie Moore can’t believe her luck when she misses the last ferry to her employer’s remote Maine island forcing her to look for shelter due to the impending story. The last thing she needs is to find herself stuck with her employer’s nephew, Lord Griffin Archer, who is an actual viscount. Even worse is finding herself attracted to him and forced to spend the night with him in less the stellar accommodations.

I absolutely loved the story of these two and everything they did to make it okay for them to spend some sexy time together without things getting overly messy. I also loved the way they both realized how much they enjoyed each other’s company and they possibility of more to come between them.

All Through the Night is a delightful story with some engaging characters and just enough sexiness to make it a fine holiday treat!

While It Was Snowing by Elyssa Patrick 4.0 stars

I really love the friends to lovers angle especially in a novella because it makes it easier to understand the quickness of the relationship when two people have known each other for a long time. In While It Was Snowing our heroine, Felicity, has noticed her best friend, Harry, has been looking at her differently lately and she’s found she doesn’t mind, in fact she rather likes it. So, she orchestrates a weekend for the two of them alone only to find out that Harry has been keeping a big secret from her and that makes both of them stop and reevaluate.

Funniest freakin’ first few pages ever in a book, so funny I swear I almost wet myself from laughing so hard. I really loved Felicity’s take charge and live in the moment attitude and I also appreciate a plus sized gal who simply doesn’t let it change who she is. Harry, loveable, quirky, stable, Harry…the epitome of a beta man and it was so hard not to love him but also feel a little bit sorry for him because he was seriously freaked out. I appreciate how he worried how moving forward would change their relationship even though Felicity promised it wouldn’t. I applaud him for making choices that were right for him and not giving in just to go with the flow, but taking the time to make sure it was what he wanted.

While at times a little heartbreaking, watching these two work out their differences and figuring out that the best thing in their lives has always been in front of them made this story an absolute joy. While It Was Snowing is a fantastic holiday story that will warm your heart for years to come!

I got my jingle bells on with the new holiday duet, Holiday for Two, by Maggie Robinson and Elyssa Patrick. Maggie Robinson is a favorite author for me (can anyone say auto-buy?), and I’m delighted to say that Elyssa Patrick is a new find. Both stories feature couples stranded in a snowstorm-one of my favorite storylines. Oh, this is delicious -- both novellas feature heroes who wear glasses. ; )

Maggie Robinson’s All Through the Night is the first one up. A blizzard keeps Carrie Moore, personal assistant for a famous mystery writer, from making the last ferry to the island where her rich employer lives. It’s Christmas Eve, and she’s stranded. The night gets interesting when she meets up with her employer’s nephew. He’s a genuine “frigging” English Viscount named Lord Griffin Archer who’s missed the last ferry too. (BTW, he’s so hot!)

With the blizzard in full force and no place to stay – the local inn is closed – the intrepid couple finds refuge in the inn’s garage! Seems Carrie is a wiz at breaking locks. Let’s just say the hijinx continue in typical Maggie Robinson fashion. There’s a “Jag-U-ar” (not “Jagwar”) car, picnic on the garage floor, and other delights. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I have to share this; Carrie and Griffin get special presents this Christmas – each other. It makes me sigh thinking about it.

This is a laugh-out-loud story that left me happy. For my tastes, it’s perfect for the holidays. During November and December, I may only have an hour or so a day that I can dedicate to reading. This story is short and satisfying. It’s what Santa knows I need to make it through the busy holiday season.
Elyssa Patrick’s While It Was Snowing features Felicity Evans, a successful small business owner of the Fat Lady Sweets candy store. (Love the name!) Imagine this opening scene: She’s naked with cold whipped cream covering her “woman parts,” and she’s waiting to seduce her best friend since childhood. When her bestie, Harry Walsh, walks through the door, reality hits both of them in the face.

I was immediately rooting for these two. Harry is a shy and awkward accountant, but he’s been crazy in love with Felicity for years. Felicity, a refreshing normal size romance heroine, has been noticing that Harry is looking at her in a way that will take their relationship to a whole new level. Oh, by the way, did I tell you that HARRY IS A VIRGIN? Yep! There’s a shiny bow for your Christmas package. Thanks, Elyssa!

Both Harry and Felicity are in love with one another, and it’s obvious to Felicity that she has to make the first move. Love is a rocky road with whipped cream (Sorry, I couldn’t resist!) for these two as hurt, angst, and the terror of losing their friendship is served up in a story that grabs you from the start. It has a sweet finish with an epilogue that I loved! Double sigh! I thought this was such a heartfelt story about friends who become lovers. I will definitely be purchasing additional books of Elyssa Patrick’s. Love her voice!!

It was fun spending time with these two couples. Both stories just sparkled. For me, holiday romances should be special, and these two stories hit the mark.

Posted on What I'm Reading

I was excited to read Holiday for Two by Maggie Robison and Elyssa Patrick. I must say that I have enjoyed both of their works. Thou Maggie Robison normally writes more historical romance, it was nice to get a chance to read something a little different. So, let's dive into my thoughts on these two stories.

All Through the Night
Maggie Robison

In this story we meet Carrie Moore who misses the last ferry to get to the island where her boss is at. Not only that she has to spend the night with her boss's nephew Lord Griffin Archer. Nothing like be stranded in a storm and with someone who rather be anywhere else.

All right, this story was a cute read with some heat between these two characters. However, Griffin isn't sure what to think about Carrie, but he feels this attraction to her. Yet, he doesn't want to take a chance. Eventually, he starts to warm to Carrie and possibly sees a future with her.

Honestly, I think I would like to see this story to go a little deeper. However, it's a novella and it has a great start if Maggie would like to make a full novel for Carrie and Griffin love story. Overall, a cute holiday get together between these two characters. Maybe I can hope to see more of story for them.

While It Was Snowing
Elyssa Patrick

I really liked this story. You have Felicity and Harry who have been friends forever, and they both have feelings for one another. However, they have keep that to themselves. Yet, Felicity wants to change the situation and become more than friends. So, she came up with the idea with a weekend getaway at the cabin. Nothing ever goes according to plan and becomes a big huge mess that might ruin the friendship.

I loved this story, because the awkwardness made this story funny. Trust me there was an awkward situation. I love how Felicity was willing to put everything on the line to be with Harry on a more intimate level. Now Harry isn't your typical hero. No; he's a dork, but a lovable one. Come on it takes a special kind of gal to love a guy who wears bow ties. However, he was afraid that she would reject him, because he didn't see himself good enough for her. Overall, the story had me laughing and tearing up.

Now my overall thoughts on these Christmas novellas. They are short, sweet, and get you in the holiday mood. So, if you are looking for a quick Christmas read, you might want to checkout Holiday for Two.

I love cabin romances, and I love Christmas books. Combine those two pluses with the fact that the authors of Holiday for Two are friends and former fellow Bon Bons, and I knew this one would be a winner. I was right. Both stories are delightful.

“All Through the Night”

This novella is Maggie Robinson’s first published contemporary romance. Thus, it seems particularly appropriate that the hero, Griffin Archer, is a viscount with an English accent and a likeness to Mr. Darcy that make him a fantasy come to life for the heroine. She is Carrie Moore, personal assistant to a successful mystery writer, who also happens to be the hero’s aunt.

The two miss the last ferry to an island off the coast of Maine where said aunt is expecting both her nephew and personal assistant. The snowstorm that closed the ferry makes travel hazardous, and Carrie and Griffin end up taking shelter from the storm in a carriage house conveniently winterized to protect a vintage Jaguar. A lot of chemistry and a bit of role playing make one snowed-in Christmas Eve a night to remember.

Both Carrie and Griffin are engaging characters. I found Carrie’s blend of pragmatism and imagination strongly appealing, and Griffin was a delightful mix of stuffiness and sexiness. I rank Robinson’s contemporary debut a smashing success, and I’ll definitely be among her eager readers if she writes more in this subgenre.

“While It Was Snowing”

Felicity Evans and Harry Walsh have been friends since they were children, but some looks Felicity has been receiving from Harry have her thinking there might be more than friendship to their relationship. Since Felicity is a confident, modern woman, she has no hesitation in deciding an intimate weekend in a Vermont cabin will be the perfect setting. But Harry, who has loved Felicity since he entered his teens, is a self-proclaimed geek who thinks Felicity deserves someone better.

Felicity is primed for seduction, and Harry wants to talk. Misunderstandings ensue, but the special connection these two have is strong enough to survive the awkwardness, the missteps, and the risks of friends becoming lovers.

A beta hero par excellence, a friends-to-lovers plot that is endearingly credible, and an opening scene that ranks with the funniest I’ve read make Patrick’s novella a standout. The epilogue is the perfect finishing touch. The author says that this is a standalone work, but I bet I’m not the only one who would love to read Nora and Ben’s story.

All Through the Night by Maggie Robinson
Carrie Moore is an assistant for a famous mystery writer (think Jessica Fletcher on copious amounts of gin.) But she has failed in her latest mission - to make it onto the ferry with Christmas dinner before a snowstorm settles in. And now she's stuck with the mystery writer's nephew in the blinding snow. But a snowstorm might be the perfect time for a personal assistant and an English viscount to spend a little time getting to know each other
A little slow in places and a big bunch of insta-love but I finished it.

Two and a half stars

While it Was Snowing by Elyssa Patrick
I usually like a novella where the characters have a past. It means that there will be some basis of a relationship that might make sense. In this case, Felicity and Harry's families have been friends for years. Now, Felicity is ready to take things to the next level. But Harry is scared. And a virgin. He's not sure that changing their relationship is going to be good and he accidentally rejects her harder than he means too. Luckily (for him), a snowstorm traps him in the cabin and the two are forced to face each other and what their future could be.
This story was fine but just fine. I didn't connect to either character or have any real faith in their HEA (even though we were shown it in an unusually-long-time-later epilogue.

I have a weakness for snowbound stories and this time of year and these two were adorable. Both featured beta heroes (another one of my favorites) and plenty of unrequited longing in the second story which had a friends to lovers theme.

In the first story, by Maggie Robinson, the two leads are stranded in a garage at a deserted inn overnight after they miss the ferry, and the roads are closed. For both, it's an interlude out of their normal lives and a chance to connect with someone they would otherwise never have gotten to know.

In the second story (my favorite of the two), the couple are best friends, but Felicity has lately been looking at Harry a bit differently, and has decided to take advantage of a winter weekend alone in a cabin, to do something about it. She greets him at the front door covered in whipped cream and nothing else, but then loses her nerve - an absolutely hilarious scene to read. Poor Harry hardly knows what hit him and although he has always loved her, he's afraid to take it to the next level.

I definitely recommend both of these stories.

Yes, this is a review of two contemporary novellas. Why? Because I love Maggie Robinson's voice and, when I enjoy an author's voice, I sometimes read across genres.

In “All Through the Night,” I particularly like how Robinson gives the heroine, Carrie, the more alpha qualities while Griffin is the more reticent, hesitant hero. If you’ve ever read Robinson’s charming historical romances, usually the cautious personalities belong to the heroines while her heroes are the brash and daring ones. Here, it’s reversed, and most delightfully.

Grade: A- for both

I’m combining the review/grade for these because although the stories are both sex-in-a-snowstorm, the authors reveal their very different characters so perfectly that you think it’s all going according to plan and then it cocks up but you don’t care because you’re all swoony and everything.

I'd give a 3 to both stories.

I had a hard time feeling the chemistry between h/h in Maggie Robinson's story - although I like the idea of a present day viscount hero.

I liked the Elyssa Patrick story a little more, although the heroine got on my nerves a bit in the middle. She is cute to start. And the hero is a beta virgin. So win there.
