Into the Deep: Diving into a Life of Courageous Faith

Rate this book
Following Jesus doesn't guarantee sunny skies and smooth sailing. In fact, the waters of life are often tumultuous, crashing over us. Sometimes we can feel that we're drowning in a sea of confusion, division, frustration, complacency, or disillusionment. We need more than a shallow faith to survive these deep waters.

Into the Deep is an invitation to dive headfirst into a life of courageous faith. With endearing warmth and authenticity, Lauren Gaskill shares how she and others have learned to swim with Jesus in the deep waters of life--facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, and chronic illness--only to discover a more authentic, enduring faith that cannot be shaken by circumstances. In addition to examining the character of God and the lives of women and men of the Bible who chose to dive deeper with God, she provides practical examples and tools that help us take our faith to the next level by learning to make decisions by faith alone, control our reactions to overwhelming situations, and live a life rooted in love.

Get ready to exchange fear and frustration for the boldness, courage, and holy confidence that lead to a life of deep faith and joy!

This book came at a time when I was really struggling spiritually. I had never felt so far away from God. Lauren helped me see that God doesn't change. He doesn't move, I do. I don't trust, I don't have faith in him in the little things. I firmly believe that God is in control so I need to fully trust God and his goodness even when I don't feel it or see it. "Our heart is deceitful above all things".

He allowed me to be a part of this launch team to show me he is still here. He never left. He lets us go if we decide to, but it pains him. He gladly and willingly draws us back to him when we ask. Thank you Lauren for sharing your story and helping those who read this book know that God is just one prayer away.

There will be storms in your life. There will be trials. There will be moments when you feel as if you're drowning and have completely forgotten how to swim. THIS BOOK reminds you that your Lifeguard is closer than you realize. The powerful words that Lauren shares touch your heart and increase your desire to trust in the power of the One who created you.

"Learning to swim is a lot like learning how to exercise faith. We have to want to try. We have to pursue a solution. We have to commit to practice skills and work toward building endurance...Stop entertaining the thought of sinking and learn to swim."

Life can be pretty scary, it can feel like trying to swim in a stormy ocean, trying to keep our head about the giant waves. But in some of the darkest moments of my life I've learned that I can make it through this, I have a Savior who makes sure that I con't even drown. Looking back over the storms of my life I can see that He was always right there beside me and always will be. The waves of life will come and go, but they don't have to take me out. Victory is already mine.

Into the Deep is a great Read. Lauren bravely shares how Seeking God in her suffering restored her faith. She had no idea God would take the Storms She faces Daily and make her an eager believer who courageously embraces the waves of life.Luke 17:6 says But we must be willing to step out and say, “God, I may not trust You fully, but I’m going to choose faith over fear in this situation or area of my life; show me what You can do, and help me discover (or redisocover) You.

"Into The Deep" is a stirring story of triumph over the challenges of health concerns, all while finding joy in the middle of it all. Lauren Gaskill is the founder of She Found Joy ministries and her story is one that will stick with you long after the read is over.

Lauren shares her journey with chronic pain and Ehlers Danlos syndrome throughout the book. She explains how her walk with Christ has been pushed into the deep waters because of this disease, yet manages to survive the challenges.

Each chapter has a theme that ties to the title, and the book is split into two parts :"Out of The Undertow" and "Swimming With Jesus." The chapters end with a set of questions for deeper reflection, along with a prayer. Lauren is relatable, honest and her sweet spirit is evident in her writing. She is always edging the reader towards a more optimistic, Christ-centered outlook, no matter how bleak things may be.

I enjoyed the book immensely, learned a lot about my walk with Christ, and found myself using the suggestions Lauren gives to enrich my journey. This book would be a perfect gift for someone who is struggling with facing health challenges, grief, or chaotic time in their lives.

I received an early reader copy from Abingdon Press and chose to review. All opinions are my own.

I was so blessed to accidentally stumble onto Lauren Gaskill’s Facebook page, and discovered that she was having a Launch Team for her book “Into the Deep”. I eagerly applied, and I was thrilled to be accepted onto the team. The cover of her book looked so invited, and the topic sounded like it was exactly what I needed at this time in my life. I was not disappointed!

Oftentimes, it feels as if we are drowning in the deep waters of life. Problems and hardships surround us, pulling us down. However, we have the ultimate lifeline in Jesus. We can choose to live out a life of courageous faith despite the circumstances that are thrown at us in this life. This is the message of Lauren’s book. The book contains 12 chapters of encouragement and practical advice. I especially loved how Lauren included personal stories, scripture, and ended each chapter with discussion questions and a heartfelt prayer.

Some quotes that really touched my heart were:

“Faith is not the absence of fear but the presence of courage.”

“God’s love and Jesus’s sacrifice have already set us free, providing a rescue for our weary souls. We just have to be willing to die to our doubt and cling to the faith and freedom we received when we first believed in Christ.”

“Joy is not the absence of problems but rather the presence of a Savior.”

“When we feel unsure of everything around us, faith in God’s Word and the hope of swimming through the deep waters of life with Jesus is what sustains us.”

“If we want to trust God, we must let go of control and spend quality time discovering who He really is.”

“If Jesus promises to always be with us, we can trust and believe that He’s here even when we can’t feel Him.”

“As we swim through the deep waters of life, we need to arm ourselves with God’s truth – the only thing that can truly hold us together and cut through the enemy’s deception and schemes.”

“Faith is our compass in the deep.”

I highly recommend this book to anyone at any stage of life. If nothing else, grab a copy and read chapter 8, which contains the faithful swimmer’s battle plan, and the personal stories in chapter 12. You will not regret picking up a copy of this uplifting book!

Gaskill’s voice is friendly, gentle, and endearing. The book reads like a conversation with someone who knows how to skip the small talk- in the best possible way.

Through Into the Deep, Gaskill partners with readers desiring a deeper faith by sharing:

• Personal stories
• Illustrations
• Scripture references and applications
• Good old-fashioned commentary
• Listicles

If you’re not familiar with the term, listicles are lists composed of short articles explaining each item on the list. Many of the chapters in this book feature listicles offering practical points and actions readers can take to enjoy a deeper faith.

Some of the quotes that stood out to me include:

• “When we fight for and step into faith, God’s Word and His promises begin to unfold in our lives.”
• “Relationships take time, and surrendering control is the only way to cultivate trust.”
• “The secret to surrender is trust.”
• “Faith isn’t meant to create more work in our lives; it is a gift that is meant to usher us into a beautiful new way of living.”
• “Ongoing connection is key to experiencing deep satisfaction and relationship with Christ.”

One of the unique qualities of Into the Deep is how honest Lauren is about ways her faith has been shallow. In one instance, she describes how her desire to get closer with God was really only because she wanted God to fix things for her. In getting closer to God, though, she realized that a deep relationship with God was a better goal and more satisfying.

For readers whose faith is shallow or who faith has grown stagnant, I believe Into the Deep will help mature and reinvigorate faith in our amazing God.

Into the Deep is an invitation to increase your faith by wading into the deep. Sounds scary, doesn’t it? But as Lauren gently reminds us, we don’t have to be afraid of the deep because Jesus will be right there with us. Each chapter ends with a set of questions inviting us to go deeper into the topics discussed. Our introspection is requested to lead us into a deeper faith walk with Jesus.

Know God – Lauren encourages her readers to have a relationship with God. Jesus is the one who goes into the deep waters with us and so we have to cultivate and maintain a connection with Him. We not only have to know Him, but we also have to believe Him.

Know yourself – Throughout the book, Lauren tells part of her story. She walks us through her history and her walk with God. When we know who we are, we understand how much we need a connection with Christ. We learn to pray with boldness for the things we need.

Run your race – Each of us is on a journey which we approach in a unique way. We are not alone in this life, but everyone is on a different journey. Our stories matter and should be shared. As we run our race and share our experiences, we encourage others and ourselves.

I’m no deep diver in a swimming pool. Heights are my enemy. I’m satisfied to do the breaststroke or simply doggy-paddle.

My friend Lauren has been a competitive swimmer. She’s a pro at jumping off the diving board. I’m sure the heights don’t faze her.

But we’ve both had to dive deep in our faith from ridiculous heights of suffering. Lauren has serious health struggles, and I’ve had significant emotional struggles.

What binds us together is our willingness to dive deep into our faith when the hardest times hit us. Her words have inspired me for years on her blog, and now, her first book Into the Deep is splashing into the world.

Lauren is a gifted writer, woman of deep faith, and a personal friend. She hosts a thriving national women’s gathering called She Found Joy and a vibrant podcast. We got to meet one another at She Speaks 2018, which was one of my highlights from a wonderful conference of godly women like Lauren. I have enjoyed reading her book Into the Deep, and you will too if you are looking to deepen your faith this year.

Practical Takeaways from Into the Deep

Lauren talks about deep spiritual truths, but she also offers down-to-earth advice for growing your faith. Here are a few of my favorite ideas from the book:

1. Meditate on the names of God. She provides a helpful chart with many biblical references.

2. Make an SOS file to use when facing spiritual battles–it will help you retain hope and positive feelings in the hardest fights.

3. Read stories of how other women conquered their fears with faith. Lauren graciously shares several inspiring, real-life stories at the end of the book, which you will find uplifting.

Favorite Quotes from Into the Deep

"I don’t want to fight the waves on my own; I want to let Jesus take over as He clears my lungs and floods my heart with His love, joy, grace, power and perfect peace."

"When we say yes to Him, He spurs us on to keep believing. Our choice, then, is whether or not we will yield and receive faith in the first place."

"We need faith if we are going to survive this life, and that means we simply cannot afford to lose it or settle for something less than what God wants to give us."

"I, for one, would trade every pair of fashionable boots and heels I own if that was necessary for me to wear the shoes of peace for the rest of my life. But because of Christ, I can wear these shoes every day."

"Do you try to spend time in the Bible daily–not just so you can check it off your to-do list but so you can be equipped for righteous, victorious living? I promise you, you will never regret making the choice to get more familiar with God’s Word and fill your mind with its truths."

"Even if our worst nightmare comes to life, God is not surprised; and if we can just hold on, we will see deliverance once again."

"Living by faith isn’t living blindly at all; in fact, engaging our faith in the decision-making process gives us the clearest vision we will ever have."

Thanks goes out to Netgalley and Abingdon Press for providing me a review copy of this excellent book.

God gives us fellow believers to strengthen and encourage us. Through their presence, words of encouragement, prayers for us, and the sharing of their own faith journeys, we can be bolstered in our own walk with God.

Filled with personal anecdotes, scriptural references, and practical application, Into the Deep, invites readers to dive deep into a life of “fearless faith”: a deep faith that withstands the battering of the storms that will hit each of us.

Lauren’s own faith was rocked by chronic illness. Her authenticity in sharing her struggles draws readers in. Her sharing of what she learned about developing a deep and courageous faith offers practical help for others. It begins with surrendering our fears and trusting God in the deep waters of life.

“Faith in Jesus is our ticket to victory…. While we might only see things one battle at a time, God sees the bigger picture; and when all is said and done, we won’t have to guess who will win because the war has already been won. Give God your defeated mind-set and watch as He fortifies you with the strength and courage you need to overcome and claim the victory that’s rightfully yours.”

Each chapter in the book provides encouragement and tools for exchanging our doubts and fears for a faith that withstands even the worst circumstances. But perhaps my favorite chapter is the final one, where Lauren shares the stories of others who also battled storms with courageous faith. Their inspirational stories demonstrate that joy is possible in any circumstance.

“living joyfully doesn’t mean we will always be happy; it means that our outlook can be hopeful and joyful in the deep, painful seasons of life.”

Learn how to take your faith to the next level, trusting God no matter what deep, dark circumstances you face. Learn to embrace His peace and joy in near-impossible situations. I think "Into the Deep" would be most helpful for those who, for perhaps the first time, feel their faith being tested.

Lauren Gaskill writes about faith as the antidote to anxiety. When worries threaten to pull us into deep places, she shows us how taking a leap of faith into a deeper relationship with Jesus can be just the life ring we need.

Lauren learned as a young adult that she couldn’t rely on the faith of her parents to get her through life’s challenges. When anxiety and pain threatened to overwhelm her, she discovered her own faith. Through her experiences, she wants to encourage other people who struggle.

When trials come our way (and they WILL come), Lauren offers six important things to remember—the most important reminder? God is not punishing us (I heard several variations of this one when my husband had cancer). We live in a sinful world and the consequences of sin affect all of us. God wants us to understand that he’ll walk with us through the pain and the consequences of sin.

If you’re looking for a life ring, Lauren offers practical tips on deepening your relationship with God, prayers that guide us closer to him, and resources for further study. Her honest sharing of how Jesus both rescued her from the waves and helped her learn to swim in the deep with faith will encourage and uplift you.

WOW!!!!! What an amazing book. This book came in my hands at the right time. I received this book as ARC. At first I put down about a dozen times because I had others to read but something kept pulling me to it. Now I know why ! I was one of them drowning in the depth of my our waves. I was feeling like I was forsaken going through depression. Then God out this book in my hand and my i add it was hard to put down once you start reading because Lauren is helping you to go through your storms by FAITH. Once I started reading this i could feel my faith being built back up and to know I wasn't along. Lauren open page after page with how much God loves us and how much God wants to help us to gain our Faith to where it needs to be. Lauren is an amazing author with a story to tell. I am so honoured to been chosen to read her book and feel love of God with each passing page.

Author Lauren Gaskill delivers an authentic book that reveals her personal struggles and how living out her faith took great courage. She shares how she overcame obstacles and offers tips, suggestions, Scripture, and advice for how readers can find the courage too.

I appreciated the authenticity shared by the author as she opens up about her own struggles. Each chapter has a selection of Scripture she suggests as well as a prayer that ends the chapter. The progression of the book finds readers where they're at in their struggle and by the last page Ms. Gaskill concludes with how readers can share their faith to friends, family, or anyone who might be facing challenges of their own.

Gaskill has written a book that shows how her faith struggled through anxiety and chronic illness. It also shows how she developed a courageous faith to “swim” through those deep waters. The purpose is to help the reader learn to exchange their fears for courage, too.

Numerous personal stories are shared in the book, along with scripture verses and reflection questions to “Go Deeper.” The author is genuine and transparent, which will likely make this book relatable to many readers, as everyone will face deep waters at some point. Gaskill outlines practical strategies, along with examples, to help the reader when they feel they are drowning by reminding them that Jesus is there to be their lifeline.

Some of my favorite quotes include:

• “When we fight for and step into faith, God’s Word and His promises begin to unfold in our lives.”
• “Beloved, you were not meant to live a life crippled by fear.”
• “The secret to surrender is trust.”
• “Faith is not the absence of fear but the presence of courage.”
• “Faith is our compass in the deep.”

I have been friends with Lauren for quite some time and prayed with her as she wrote this book. I was super excited when she shared that it was finished and being published. I was even more excited when I got my hands on one of the first copies and couldn't wait to dive in and read!

This book is just wow! I have personally struggled with fear and anxiety since I was a little girl so to read about Lauren's struggles with anxiety it helped to reassure me and will help other women know they are not alone in this struggle. It takes courageous faith to face the daily struggles when you feel like the enemy is holding you down. It also takes courageous faith to surrender all your broken pieces so he can make you whole again. Into the Deep is a challenge for women to stand tall when the waves of life are crashing on you and dragging you down.

My favorite part of this book has been the "Go Deeper" questions and the heartfelt prayers after each chapter. I found that the questions helped me identify and address my own struggles challenging me to dive "Into the Deep" in my faith journey. This is a must read for any woman or young girl!

If, like me, you find yourself feeling empty, lost, or alone; if you don’t feel anything and nothing sounds remotely interesting; if you wonder how to deepen your relationship with God; then this book is for you.

I started this book with no words, and as an author, that means something, it hurts. But while reading through this book, praying the prayers at the end of each chapter, and applying the principles listed in each section, I now have words.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in the presence of God in their life. Whatever is holding you back, you will find a way to deepen your pursuit of your Lord and Savior.

Life can be so challenging at times and Into the Deep really helped me to see that God is always there, always faithful. Sometimes when we need to lean into God the most, we lean away and Lauren Gaskill does such a beautiful job leading us to Him to show we can have a deeper faith in our journey. Fear doesn’t have to be the end of our story. God’s got us!

Author Lauren Gaskill reminds us, in her new book, Into the Deep, that we weren't meant to live a life crippled by fear. We were made to experience deep faith, joy, and freedom in Christ.
In Lauren's book, she lays out bold truths that truly help us navigate the deep with God.
The quote I love most is on page 28. Lauren writes, "From the dawn of creation to this very moment, one truth remains: God is faithful and can be trusted."
This book is packed full of encouragement and will be a timeless Christmas gift for any woman in your life.

"Into the Deep", book written by Lauren Gaskill, captures the struggle that obstacles, trials, and unexpected life changes can bring. As you read about her own challenges with chronic illness, her genuine and authentic spirit is clearly seen. "Following Jesus", as she states in the book, doesn't guarantee sunny skies and smooth sailing." Clear, practical examples and strategies are given throughout the book as well as many Scripture references to help the reader to navigate through the deep waters life can bring.
As a chronic illness sufferer, I was drawn to the premise of this book. The message definitely strengthened my resolve and gave renewed hope! I especially liked the quote, "A fully surrendered heart is the antidote to fear and the gateway to freedom in the deep waters of life, because it's not focused on everything that's going wrong."
I recommend this book for everyone! At some point, (or many);) we will face waves, currents, undertows that knock us down or take us under, but Jesus is our anchor! Lauren knows everything we need is found in Him!
"We are warriors of the deep.
We are more than conquerors.
In Him, we are courageous.
In Him, we are victorious.
and because Jesus lives in us,
we will overcome the waves."

This book is amazing. Lauren Gaskill shares openly about her struggle with depression as a teenager and college student. She goes on to share the struggle of learning a few years ago of a long-term illness that was the reason for her depression. In the middle of her struggles, she leads you to find a courageous faith--a consistent, bold faith. I love how Lauren gives practical steps to help us walk the faith journey. As a mom to an 18-year old who struggles with health issues including anxiety and depression, this book gives me comfort and hope. God's not done with my daughter yet! Anyone who walks through difficult situations and struggles to know how to keep the faith needs to read this book! I would love to put this book in the hands of every young female college student there is.

This book. It feels like a conversation with a friend. Lauren shares incredible encouragement and insight straight from the heart. And it’s so honest. There are so many instances in the book where her words described my exact feelings & challenges on living courageously. I also loved the Biblical examples and scripture references woven throughout. We are all challenged to strengthen our faith, even when it’s really hard. Let this book guide & encourage you along the journey. (And then, you’re definitely going to want to share it with a friend! The insights in here are great conversation starters.) Enjoy this gem.

If you are a Christian woman struggling with pursuing faith in God wholeheartedly, you may want to read Into the Deep: Diving Into a Life of Courageous Faith. Into the Deep is the first book released by author and speaker Lauren Gaskill and it tells of her personal struggle toward a firm faith in Christ rather than one that is fickle. The result of personal hardship, Lauren found herself receiving counseling and was encouraged by her counselor to remember that the Holy Spirit who raised Christ from the dead was also dwelling in her and able to give her the faith she needed. Over time, Lauren began learning more about who God is according to Scripture and began not only to fall in love with her Savior but to realize she could trust Him because His character never fails. Lauren was a swimmer for years so often throughout the book, readers will find swimming metaphors representing diving into a deep life of bold faith in Christ. One aspect of Lauren's writing that I'm especially grateful for is her honesty. I love that she's vulnerable enough to share with readers that she's endured anxiety, received counseling, and had moments of weak faith. Rather than appealing to being "messy" like many popular books aimed at Christian women, Into the Deep is different because it offers hope. Rather than staying in the midst of the mess, women are encouraged to delight in who God is according to the Word. A unique resource offered in Into the Deep can be found on pages 60-61 in which Lauren provides a chart detailing the names of God and attributes of God with Bible verses to show how who God is can be clearly seen in Scripture. I was greatly encouraged by Lauren's gospel reminders on page 36 that speak to the false notion that we are being punished by God when we endure trials. Regarding this, Lauren wrote, "Punishment is incompatible with the gospel of Jesus Christ. . . The gospel says that because of Christ's sacrifice, our sins have been forgiven and forgotten. . . Jesus' death and resurrection paid all our debts and freed us from the power and penalty of sin. So when we suffer, we can know hat it is not for our punishment but for a greater purpose." Lauren quotes Beth Moore in her book and uses references from The Message paraphrase of the Bible. I'm not a fan of either resource but I also didn't find them to be theologically harmful as used in Into the Deep. Overall, I enjoyed reading Into the Deep and I'm thankful for Lauren's fresh perspective on what it looks like to leave behind a faith that is weak and wholeheartedly pursue Jesus. I received Into the Deep compliments of Abingdon Press in exchange for my honest review.

I never learned to swim and as I read the beginning of this book , I thought oh no I may be in trouble. The author asks which group you fall in comparing faith to swimming. I may be the one who hesitantly exercises faith. Whenever we go through a difficult time, that is the perfect time to lean on our faith. Sometimes we don't and then wonder what happened. For me it was hitting the bottom of the barrel in my life before I truly understood about faith. The anger that had built up inside of me was too much and I was on the brink of walking away from God. I can't pinpoint the moment but I know that at some time, I surrendered and said "God, I have little faith but I need you." It was a turning point in my life.

i really enjoyed this book and how it is set up. Each chapter is about a topic which the author gives great examples that help you apply it to your life.. At the end of each chapter is a Going Deeper section, followed by a prayer. I loved how the author used biblical and real life stories in the book. There are a few chapters I want to touch on. The first is learning to trust. That is a big one for me. I am guilty of wanting to be in control. That does make it hard on God, if I take the reins and leave Him out. When I began to really trust Him, I felt this big weight lifted off me. Now God is in control and I can feel confidant that He has my back.

The other chapter that really caught my attention was about overcoming fear. I have lived with fear all my life and have PTSD. My day is filled will anxiety, depression and fear of everything. It is a hard journey but after reading this chapter, I feel more confidant and assured that my faith will see me through.I enjoyed the example of Job. He really went through so much, yet he showed no fear. His faith was so strong he overcame what the enemy tried to do. God doesn't want to see us suffer. "He may allow it and use it to purify our faith and draw us deeper into relationship with Him."

I hope you will grab a copy of this book and let the words soak in has you go deeper into His presence. He is always there waiting with open arms. "He who is strong to save us once is strong to save us for the rest of our lives."

I received a copy of this book from Read with Audra Blogger Program. The review is my own opinion.

You can fight for faith and keep hope alive

Lauren Gaskill is a speaker and the founder of "She found Joy" podcast and tour. In her book "Into the Deep: Diving into a Life of Courageous Faith" she shares how she experienced God's faithfulness in her life while battling anxiety, dealing with the diagnosis of the incurable genetic Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and starting a women's ministry. The goal of her book is to encourage the reader to fight for faith and to keep hope alive in providing examples from her own life to which the reader can relate, often linked to her experiences as a swimmer. She underlines that the truth of the bible never changes and bases her statements on this truth of the Bible.
Gaskill introduces the chapters with quotes that underline the importance of the discussed topic, she presents resources for further study (Questions for going deeper) and ends the chapters with prayers that can be used as they are or adapted to the reader's personal situation.
I highly recommend the book for today's Christian women who need encouragement for the struggles that they are facing. It will help them to see that they are not alone, that they need to strengthen their own faith, and that they can apply Gaskill's practical tips on deepening their relationship with God in their own lives. I appreciate Gaskill's honesty about her struggles and her wisdom from a life that is not only "sunny skies and smooth sailing."
A quote that is important to me: "God is stronger than the enemy beneath our feet, and he has a divine check on the chaos that the enemy's movement creates. Even if our worst nightmare comes to life, God is not surprised; and if we can just hold on, we will see deliverance once again."
