I studied environmental engineering in grad school, however, having started my first job at a WWTP (or water resource recovery facility) and found this book more enlightening than what I learned. Everything in this book is written for the lay audience, but what I like most about it is all the colored figures. My goal was to go on to take the class III certification test, but I couldn't get the hours for experience so I can't say how well this book works for that experience. It's part of a series of books and includes very very detailed flow charts for troubleshooting. Originally I rented the book from the library, but bought it as reference. (Then found out my company has access to it for free through WEF).
