New Year’s Negotiation by Kate Allenton

Favorite Quotes:

It was an unfamiliar feeling and one that would pass like my New Year’s resolution to exercise.

“That woman was downright rotten. She said what she meant and meant what she said. She was the strongest and most stubborn woman I’d ever met.” “Then why’d you marry her?” Ben chuckled in passing on his way toward the kitchen. “I had to. She hogtied me on our first date and owned more guns than I did.”

My Review:

This was my first time reading Kate Allenton, and I have to wonder why? How have I not noticed this delightful scribe? She hit on two of my favorite tropes with a second chance small-town romance. The storyline was well developed and entertaining, the characters were knowable and endearing, and the writing was cleverly amusing and engaging. That all adds up to a big Bingo for me – I have an early Christmas present of a new favorite author.

Unexpected Daddy by Gemma Brocato

Favorite Quote:

Braden Morningstar, outstanding centerfielder, cover-model sexy. Man-whore, according to the tabloids. There was a reason they called him Morning After Morningstar.
My Review:

I enjoyed this sweet and steamy second chance romance for previous high school sweethearts. A villainous meddlesome mother was to blame for the previous failure, which is a highly relatable villain in my experience ;) Gemma Brocato always provides an engaging storyline with gasp-worthy sizzle and a satisfying HEA.

5 - Enjoy the magic of Christmas and prepare to fall in love… Stars!

Review of ~ For One Night Only by Carrie Elks

I love Carrie’s work but I wanted to cry at the end of this novella, because the potential for a longer story including this couple was huge (everything crossed we get more in the future).

It was going to be a long eight hours…

I adored Carys and Jesse, and the opposites-attract connection that grows between them over the course of a night. One that’s partially spent stuck in a roadside rest-stop, which interrupts their bus journey to Portland; him for a gig, her for a family visit.

Meet-cute at its best, with a magical fruit cake, some seasonal sparkle and it’s also a really great way to discover this authors work if you haven’t read anything by her previously.

"I don’t know anything about you…"

"…You know more than you think."

Another winner, and I thank the author for providing an advance copy of her novella, the review in exchange was my absolute pleasure to provide.

**** New Year’s Negotiation by Kate Allenton****

So as far as a short story goes, it doesn’t get better. Lizzy is a detective that had love once but a lot of interferences and misunderstandings lead to heart break. Ben comes back into her life after a drunken walk in town and now she’s stuck with him for the night. Lizzy really has walls built up regarding Ben and no wonder. Things aren’t as they seem though and once the air is cleared, love
can once again blossom.

Wild Honey by Sarah Hegger is the only story in the 12 Nights of Christmas Anthology that I have read. After reading Honey and Oliver's story, I'm looking forward to reading the remaining stories.

I really enjoyed reading Honey and Oliver's story. They have a big storm going on, a stuck elevator, a yoga instructor, an OCD business man, and magical fruitcake. What else do you need for a wonderful holiday story.

Sarah Hegger has written great characters for her anthology piece as always. Honey and Oliver were fun to read. They had fantastic depth, and to have it portrayed in such a short story was brilliant. It was wonderful to watch them evolve together and the passion I could feel bubbling under the surface was very well done.

I was excited to see that Stacy Finz contributed a story to this anthology. Her story, Rekindled: December 31st, is the only one I have read.

Branna and Drex are divorced but both attending their mutual friends' New Year's Eve brunch. A faulty elevator, lingering feelings, and old hurts and frustrations come together to make a wonderful second chance story.

I sometimes have issue with short stories or novellas due to underdeveloped characters or plot. While this is definitely not a full length novel, I found myself connecting with and rooting for Brenna and Drex. I was also satisfied with the plot arc, even though I do wish we could see more of their story!

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

I received an ARC of Kate Allenton’s “New Year’s Negotiation” and I loved it! It was a sweet romance of separated young lovers who have been reunited. It is a short novella that is included in a 12 Days of Christmas anthology. I look forward to reading the rest of the stories!

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Rekindled: December 31st by one of my favorite Authors, Stacy Finz. This story is part of anthology by some very good authors. Its a sweet love story involving fruitcake, elevators and love that got off the track but somehow rights itself. A quick read, but worth the time. Dex and Branna are both driven in their careers but at what cost? A New Year's romance that's makes you believe in love again.

New Year's Negotiations by Kate Allenton
Lizzie and Ben have a past. One that ended on such a note of misunderstandings. I love Lizzie's snarkiness and Ben's determination. This was a romance that was so much fun to read. Lizzie fighting tooth and nail against Ben, and Ben being stubbornly determined to get the girl. I can't wait to see what other shenanigans are in store in this book.

Unexpected Daddy by Gemma Brocato
The magic of Christmas extends to more than just typical presents. Five years is a long time to be without the one person that truly completes you. Though the circumstances for being apart include a truly despicable and meddlesome mother. Though she had her reasons and in her heart she may have believed she was doing the right thing. But in terms of love, everything will work out in the end. And it certainly does for Braden and Harper with a bonus sweet little 5 yr old Kai.
Ms. Broccato is a genius at bringing a sweet romance to life. This short story deserves more than just 5 stars. I absolutely loved it, and would definitely recommend it to my friends.

i got a sneak peek at Unexpected Daddy by Gemma Brocato - Great, quick read with the perfect happy ending! College sweethearts Harper and Braden allow another’s bitterness to drive them apart. 5 years later, Harper returns home after her mother’s death, with Braden’s son in tow. The sparks are still there and Christmas miracles do happen. Looking forward to reading the rest of the stories as the "magical fruitcake" premise is intriguing!!

Also go a sneak peek at New Year's Negotiation by Kate Allenton - cop Lizzy helps out her brother's best friend and former boyfriend on New Year's Eve. Unbeknownst to Lizzy, Ben has realized that Lizzy should have been his all along and takes Lizzy on a trip down memory lane in hopes that she can come to the same conclusion. For being a short story, author Kate Allenton manages to invoke all the feels - from laughter to tugging at the heartstrings. I'm looking forward to seeing if the rest of the stories in this collection are of the same superior quality as Gemma's and Kate's!

I had the pleasure of reading an ARC copy of WILD HONEY by SARAH HEGGER. What a great story! The characters were well developed and relatable. It's interesting how the author played to our preconceived notions of how these characters should be based on their career choices and then gave us different personalities altogether. The chemistry between Oliver and Honey was there from the first moment and made for a wonderful read. There were a few brilliant touches that I can't post without creating spoilers. But trust me, dear reader, you'll know it when you read them. I highly recommend this story.

Scrooge You [December 25], MK Schiller
Three stars
A retelling of A Christmas Carol. Sweet story about workaholic Eva and her boyfriend Jack.

Unexpected Daddy [December 26], Gemma Brocato
Three stars
Harper lets her boyfriend go so he can pursue his dreams without letting him know she's pregnant. Braden runs into her when they're both back in town five years later. Again, a sweet story, but it seemed like a fast-forward through the recognition and reconciliation...

The Meant to Be Girl [December 27], Tawdra Kandle
Three stars
Ashley Webbar meets Zane Fletcher when he walks into her salon for an emergency trim. She can't believe this smart, handsome guy might be interested in her; as his family's black sheep, he is trying to work up the nerve to ask her out. A cute small-town Christmas story.

For One Night Only [December 28], Carrie Elks
Four and a half stars
Very charming story about two people who meet unexpectedly on an overnight bus to Portland, and the lovely start of something beautiful and more lasting.

This is the first I've read by Carrie Elks, but I definitely plan to look for more of her writing.

Best Friends for One Night [December 29], Alice Gaines
Four and a half stars

A treasured friendship between Steve and his army buddy's widow Hannah has a chance to become more one stormy night.

Alice Gaines does a lovely job with this friends-to-lovers story, giving two grieving people the opportunity to move beyond their shared mourning to considering the possibilities life has presented them. Steve and Hannah are well written, and their blossoming feelings a sweet treat against the backdrop of the holidays.

I've enjoyed everything I've read so far by Ms Gaines, and definitely plan to add more of her writing to my shelf!

Entwined [December 30], Kristi Rose
Four and a half stars

I've always been a sucker for the brother's best friend trope, and Kristi Rose's Entwined does a great job with it.

Donovan's been a friend of the family for so long, he's practically one of the family. But that hadn't stopped Bailey's stupid heart from considering the possibility that he might LIKE like her... And when they're snowed in for a night, that gives them a chance to... explore the possibilities. Really enjoyed Bailey's straightforwardness and their familiarity, which definitely did not breed contempt ;) Will be looking for more of Ms Rose's work as well!

Rekindled [December 31], Stacy Finz
Four stars

Really enjoyed Stacy Finz's second-chance story. Drex and Branna have been divorced a year now, and she's finally starting to feel like she's able to move on. But their mutual friends have invited them to their annual NYE party in their gorgeous high rise condo, and as luck would have it, they get stuck in the elevator ride up.

Drex and Branna's characters felt very real, and the concerns that parted them equally true-to-life. Loved seeing them work towards a reconciliation, and honestly, would have happily read a chapter or two more to seal the deal :)

Ms Finz is another new-to-me author, and I'll also be looking for more of her writing.

New Year's Negotiation [January 1], Kate Allenton
Three and a half stars
Ben and Elizabeth threw off sparks years ago, but went their separate ways. Now that Elizabeth's brother, Ben's best friend, is getting married, Ben is determined to close the distance between them and convince her they're meant to be. Their interactions are funny and poignant; the interference of family members less so.

Would be open to reading more of Ms Allenton's writing.

Playing House [January 2], Kim Golden
Three stars
Cassie receives a mysterious package containing a fruitcake the morning of her ex-husband's engagement party. Sick of her awful ex-mother-in-law's cruel comments, she lets her know she'll be bringing a date. Little does she know that her former boyfriend, the one that pre-dated the ex, has been looking for her. The perfect time to rekindle old flames :)

Michael and Cassie's second chance is a pleasant read.

Book of Love [January 3], Cd Brennan
Four stars
Mel can't stand her mailman. He's obviously trying to drive her insane and ruin her packages at the same time, dumping them carelessly outside her bookstore willy-nilly. Nick definitely has some strong feelings for Mel, but she'd be surprised to learn what direction his thoughts tended...

When a snowstorm strands for a night in her shop, some very pleasant truths are revealed. Cd Brennan's story is a delicious read, and I look forward to seeing some of her other work.

A Winter Wonderland [January 4], Rebecca Hunter
Four and a half stars
Jace and Selena were high school sweethearts, and when Selena refused Jace's ring and proposal after graduation, it broke both their hearts. When Selena returns to Delilah's Cove after a painful divorce, maybe this will give them a chance to get it right this time.

A well-written second chance story, A Winter Wonderland is both sweet and passionate. I look forward to reading more by Rebecca Hunter.

Wild Honey [January 5], Sarah Hegger
Four stars
An opposites-attract/enemies-to-lovers story, Wild Honey is about Honey and Oliver, owners of neighboring businesses. He's as straight laced as they come, while she's a bit more of a free spirit.

But when they're trapped in an elevator during a storm, it turns out that they might not be so different after all...

A delightful story about all the layers people have and why often when we take the time to look beneath, we may be pleasantly surprised.

All in all, a great collection of Christmas stories!

Playing House : January 2nd by Kim Golden

A little bit of Christmas magic conspires to bring Cassie Delk and her first real love Michael Holgersson back together in this short but sweet holiday romance. It was always evident to Cassie that Michael was the one for her when she lived in Sweden. However, out of fear she chose comfort and what she thought was predictability, moving back to the states and choosing to marry another man. Years later after they have both married and divorced other people they manage to gravitate back to one another. Michael arrives in the small town of Hunters Grove where Cassie now resides in search of the one that got away. In the beginning Michael pretends to be Cassie's new love interest to help her save face at her ex-husband's engagement party. However, the smoldering heat that has always simmered just beneath the surface between the former lovers is impossible to contain. Before long all pretense is thrown out the window as Cassie and Michael finally admit their true feelings for one another. Playing House is yet another beautiful love story by Kim Golden that shouldn't be missed!

This review is based on one story only. I am reviewing "New Years Negotiation" by Kate Allenton.

It's New Years Eve and Elizabeth Cross is sitting on her deck, watching the party on the beach. She received a fruitcake and four little bottles of bourbon from an unknown person in Delilah's Cove, Oregon when she lives in North Carolina. The enclosed card said it was sent with magic and love.

She blows it off and starts eating it while watching the craziness. She gets a surprise when her doorbell rings and an even bigger surprise when she sees who is there. It's the local defense attorney, Ben Michaels, who is going to be in Elizabeth's brother's wedding the next day and was a former love of Elizabeth's. He's drunk and has an escort.

Ben makes his way in and eats some of the fruitcake. Let the fun begin. The banter between these two made me laugh out loud. My favorite line was when Elizabeth told him"...I could send you to work with a smile on your face. The criminals and you coworkers would thank me. Heck, they might even build a statue in my honor." I laughed and laughed over that. I'm still laughing about it.

The chemistry between these two characters was the best I've seen in a long time. He was clever and creative, but not overbearing. She was reluctant and sarcastic. I loved them. They worked so well together.

The story has a slight theme of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, but is unique in how it all comes together. It's light, fun, and brilliant. I loved every minute of it.

*I received this as a gift

Playing House by Kim Golden is a hit. I have to tell you, I am usually a lover of dark, erotic and paranormal, but this was so cute 😄. The seamless way you implied them making love is an art and you nailed it! Contrary to what I normally go for, you gave me just enough that it gave me what I needed to visualize the act. The premise of the story that love has no limit even if there’s distance, an satisfied ex that wants his cake and to eat it too, and the mystery package that randomly appears out of nowhere...that was so awesome lol I mean really, can you imagine receiving something like that in the mail? You know we are so suspect that that box would surely make in the trash bin without us even thinking twice hahaha. I really hope that this is an encouragement for you to keep doing what you’re doing and the way you do it 😄 I know, that was a lot, but you get what I’m saying 😉. Congratulations on a great read.

Pretty hard to review an anthology, but I do have to say that I liked the continuity of the fruitcake in each of the novella's. It really connected them despite the characters and their story lines being so different. I wish that some of the novellas were a bit longer, as they had the potential to be a full out novel. However, overall, it's a wonderful read, pretty uplifting and light.I think my favourite was "Scrooge You" simply because I love the Scrooge and the turnaround that ends with a little happier ever after (cause happily ever after isn't always true!)

I received an advance copy of - "Book of Love” by Cd Brennan.
The characters are well developed, the plot is fast-moving and the whole story is great!
I want to spend more time in this small Michigan town and meet everyone - but most importantly, I want to spend another evening with Mel and Nick. They're HOT!

Also "Unexpected Daddy" by Gemma Brocato which was fabulous!
Harper and Braden and Kai are my new favorite family! Their Christmas story was heartwarming and extremely sexy.

These previews of this book make me extremely excited to read the whole thing and hoping Christmas comes early!!

Christmas in September is the best idea ever. The joy and love of this time of the year is worth a good read with twelve sweet love stories. The one that I liked the most, even if it’s difficult to choose is the story of Donovan and Bailey from Kristi Rose. A really good read.

I am reviewing “New Year’s Negotiation” by Kate Allenton...a short, sweet love story with it's up and downs. Lizzie and Ben had a thing years ago but the relationship fell apart due to a misunderstanding. Now Ben is back in town for the wedding of Lizzie's brother. He is also determined to rekindle his relationship with Lizzie. Will it work out? Only time and reading this book will tell.

I received an ARC of Rekindled from Stacy Finz; that is the only story in this anthology that I have read, though I love the premise that links the stories, that magical fruitcakes can bring couples together. Because Christmas. And fruit cake!

I love Stacy’s novels; I’ve read every one of them. One of the reasons I one-click her books is because she’s so very good at writing characters who are unique, interesting, and utterly human. Branna and Drex have been divorced a year, but end up invited to the same New Year’s Eve party. Thanks, perhaps, to a magic fruit cake, they end up trapped in an elevator and finally talking about issues that clearly should have been brought up a year earlier. While it’s clear there was a legitimate concern, I felt that Branna came off as a bit unsympathetic, while Drex finally, finally may be getting a clue that his behavior was unacceptable. Stacy is a brilliant writer, so even though I could have wished for a bit more meat to the story, it’s a very sweet entry into the anthology, and has a lot to say about the value of listening to each other, and to your heart.

I read only the Tawdra Kandle story in this collection (December 27: The Meant to Be Girl), so can only review that portion of the collection.

I’m an avid Tawdra Kandle fan and have devoured all of these small town stories. Even without that background, you could surely read this short and enjoy it just as much. The characters in it are genuine, real, and filled with love. This story shows the inner workings of the budding relationship fans have seen in the background. Ashley is a hard working business owner who falls in love with her salon’s customer, Zane. They skirt the issues and seem to keep missing each other, but this story gives them the perfect (and maybe magical?) way to take the next step. Who wouldn’t love a story about romance, determination, and fruitcake?

Entwined by Kristi Rose is a perfect bite of spicy second chance romance sure to be devoured in one sitting. Donovan knows how he feels about Bay, but doesn't want to lose the only family he has by crossing that line. Will he go for the girl he loves? I highly recommend this book to fans of the contemporary romance genre.

Rekindled by Stacy Finz is a sweet and (a tad) spicy second chance romance.

This is one that you can read in one sitting with time to spare. The characters are well rounded and the story rehashes a marriage gone wrong. Branna and Drex have a second chance to make things right. My romantic side really enjoyed the opportunity for a do-over.

I highly recommend this story to fans of the contemporary romance genre.

I received an ARC of this book from Stacy Finz. Her story is Rekindled: December 31st. I love Stacy's writing style and the way her stories flow. In this book, Drex and Branna are divorced, but find they are still very much in love. While being stuck in an elevator, with only the "magic" fruitcake to eat, they both discover things about each other and themselves, that help to lead them back together. This is a fast read, and while I do wish it had been a little longer and we would have gotten a little more idea of what might happen in the future with these two characters, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps we will see Drex and Branna again sometime...
