A sweet swoon worthy second chance romance perfect for Valentine’s Day 💘

Belinda Missen dreams up romantic stories that are bursting with everything I love about the genre... wonderful characters, witty dialogue, beautiful settings, strong friendships, and humor... it is the month of love and this is the perfect story to sweep you off your feet and take you away for a few hours...

Emmy and Will meet while on vacation... their connection is strong, but can it withstand the test of thousands of Miles? At first they remain in contact email, text, all the means of communication we have available to us today... but when communication stops Emmy is heartbroken... some Time goes by and she finds herself moving to London for a new job... where.... guess who she runs into? SO will Emmy and Will get a second chance at love?

such a fun flirty feel good story filled with humor and heart... Emmy and Will are both very likable, quite adorable together, and I really enjoyed the banter between them... this is the type of story that makes you want to believe in love and happily ever after...

An enchanting and engaging romance that will delight anyone who loves the love! Recommend!

Favorite Quotes:

‘Do you need money? I’ve got some money. What about condoms. Josh, have you got any spare?’ … ‘No, I don’t need money, it’s fine. And I certainly don’t need Josh’s contraceptives.’ He tutted. ‘It’s not like it’s been used, Em.’

Are they rated five-star? I’ll have you know I cannot possibly lower my standards after the holiday I’ve had. Farting boys and vomit-stained shoes, infidelity-inspired fights, and cheap souvenirs are nothing to sniff at.

‘All the sunscreen in the world can’t protect this pale English skin, baby. Look at it, it’s…’ ‘… alabaster?’ I tried. ‘Well, I was going to say porcelain, but alabaster sounds less like a toilet, doesn’t it?’

You’ll be well chuffed to know I delivered a baby today. Well, not technically mine. I didn’t birth it, nor did it come out of me, but I happened to be in the right place at the right time… Hats off to any woman that ever wants to put their body through that because I am completely okay with being a boy right now. If I kept a gratitude journal, it might read something like this: Today I am grateful for: my penis. W

Things weren’t great in the land of real estate… Her boss had given her the stink-eye more than once when she’d delivered the news that the Hawes property in Chelsea was a no-go, and that the buyers in Kensington had backed out quicker than a one-night stand running for the bus.

He’s a peach, Em… A peach that’s fallen to the ground and is riddled with worms.

My Review:

I smirked my way through this refreshingly crisp and delightfully written tale. The writing was loaded with plucky humor, sharp wit, and clever banter, and I adored Ms. Missen’s lively and endearing characters. The unique storylines were active, well-paced, keenly engaging, and held my interest throughout while prickling my curiosity with a bit of intrigue. How many love stories start with a punch in the face to the female lead?

Do you believe in serendipity? I just might after reading this book. I simply can't express what a joy this book was to read! I absolutely loved it!

While on vacation Emmy and William have a chance encounter and sparks fly. Forced to part ways as the vacation comes to an end, they vow to keep in touch and seal it with a kiss. Month after month of letters are exchanged and it seems like they are going to be an adorable couple. Then just as Emmy is planning to come for a visit, William seemingly falls off the face of the earth! All communication on his part comes to a grinding halt.

My heart sunk, I was riddled with questions of what has become of William. Had he had some terrible accident? Was he even alive? Or maybe he had a wife and children that Emmy didn't know about? I found myself initially mad at William, thinking he must be up to no good. Then my anger turned to worry and dread as I feared something terrible may have happened.

Are Emmy and William destined to meet again, perhaps by chance as they once did? I loved reading the banter back and forth between these two! Emmy is such a likeable girl and I found myself rooting for her to find true love despite all the hurdles she had to endure. I loved living vicariously through Emmy as she moved to London and went on her adventures checking off her London (bucket, death) list! You will know what I mean when you read this delightful book!

Belinda Missen does it again! After 'Recipe for Disaster', I knew she was going to be the queen of second chance romances and this story displays all her familiar charms at its finest. What I liked most about this author is her style of writing and the characters who leap out of the pages even if the story sounds a bit unrealistic. A girl and boy meet accidentally and falls in love within a span of a few hours, only to fail in the long distance relationship . . . and they meet again after years quite unexpectedly. What are the odds?
I don't want to spoil your reading by giving out too much of the story. Obviously, you need to wait until the last pages to know what happened to the missing letters. And if you feel sorry for Emmy's boyfriend (like I felt), then don't worry, soon her actions will be justified. Then there is the cute romantic ending, a romance reader's dream. Oh! I loved it!
Altogether a perfect romance for the month of love . . .

An Impossible Thing Called Love was wonderful, feel good, witty and entertaining with heartwarming romance that revolved around the love story of Emmy and William. The book was about second chance to love, miscommunication, forgiveness, looking at your own mistake and behavior, and friendship.

Characters-

Emmy was great throughout the book. I loved her lively and friendly nature. She was amazing friend and developed character with good conscience. I liked the way she accepted her mistake at the end.

William was charming, fun loving and utterly romantic. I loved him from Hogmanay to Hogmanay. What was best about him was he never brought his problems to work. No one could see how worst his personal life was. On outside he was happy, friendly, devoted to his work whom everybody loved. If I was in Emmy’s place I would have forgiven him before he even said sorry. 😉

From the very first chapter I loved the trio of Emmy, Heather and Josh that gave overview of how their friendship started, their characteristics and importance in Emmy’s life. Josh was hilarious. I knew I’m going to like him when I read about his make-up bag. Heather was great with her protective maternal nature. Emmy’s siblings were also good. I wish I could read more about them.

Craig was jerk, not in the beginning but later when he and Emmy moved to London. I never liked him in Sydney as well. Maybe my love for William was more just like Emmy. His behavior was outrageous. I wouldn’t have tolerated it like Emmy did. But I loved her when she snapped and the way she saved her dignity.

What I Liked -

I loved the plot and this heartwarming love story. I like stories that pastes a goofy smile on my face, makes me laugh, fall in love with characters and their life, and ache for more.

Book started with Emmy describing her wonderful experience of Europe trip and enjoying Hogmanay festival with her best friends Josh and Heather. But that unfortunately sidetracked by a punch on face! Good thing, it led her to a beautiful direction, she met handsome first aider, William. In just a day both felt connection. Ending the vacation with promise of staying in touch and heartwarming kiss both went back to their own life, own country and dream the impossible of seeing each other again. Switching from email to letters and gifts exchange, rambling their life they became best friends.

What I didn’t expect was as fast the holiday fling started the sooner it ended. That too abruptly. Letters stopped coming from William. I was dying to know What happened to William? Why he stopped writing?

Emmy moved on in life after waiting more than a year. She started dating her classmate Craig who was nice. Both Emmy and Craig moved to London with new job, new relation sharing apartments with her best friends. Life was good what she didn’t anticipate was heartbreak, new and old friends, secrets and mystery of lost letters were awaiting to make her life complicated.

It was first person narrative from Emmy’s POV who made me fall in love with her charming and delightful voice. Writing was amazing. It hooked me to story right from the beginning. It was easy, enticing and fun to read. All touristy places, streets, restaurants and food were wonderfully written. Whenever I travel I also make bucket list like Emmy and make sure I have enough days to cover all of them. I enjoyed conversation between characters specially those letters.

When Emmy and William met again and shared their disappointments, shouting, fighting, and giving the cold behavior, I had a theory what went wrong and why they didn’t receive each other’s letters. I was eager to find how right my hypothesis was. But I was so so wrong. I didn’t expect William having this big secret.

The communication gap and fear of losing friendship that resulted into secrets and heartbreak. I could feel Emmy’s disappointments and emotions for both William and Craig. I loved the way she handles situation with calm and composure. But she was also at fault for not telling the truth. It showed not to just blame others but look at our own behavior as well.

Twist and turns were surprising, unexpected. I loved William’s proposal and their trip just before climax. The development in story and climax was nicely written. I loved to see how Emmy and William finally resolved their issues and celebrated New Year in perfect happy ending.

Why 4 Stars-

That revelation of missing letters during the conversation was little confusing. I had to reread it. There were some moments I wanted to smack Emmy on the head. I mean why to tolerate nasty behavior of Craig, why couldn’t she forgive William and made things harder.

Overall, it was sweet, happily-ever-after, cozy and perfect vacation read, filled with humor and charming characters.

Appropriately, I read this while on holiday, and my weekend interstate trip also ended up containing Emmy's delightful guided tours of Delightfully transporting, full of trademark Missen-isms and croissants (yum) - it is entirely possibly I would not have survived a poorly-thought out 12 hour night train ride without the help of this book taking me away to where Emmy was. Emmy knows how to bloody live. Five stars on Tripadvisor; most fun I have ever had in London.

It isn't very often a story starts with the heroine being punched in the face and needing first aid treatment, is it? Well that's how this story starts and it is also how the victim, Emmy, gets to meet William, who is the first aider coming to treat her. There's an instant connection between them but she's on a touring holiday with her friends and about to return home to Australia so they may have met but they're about to be half a world away from each other.

There are emails and letters which suddenly stop with no explanation, an obnoxious, manipulative female endeavouring to force them apart, new jobs, new relationships and great journeys involved in this story which has some laugh out loud incidents and some that had me shaking my head in disbelief. It is a heartwarming story of travelling, seeking your dreams and learning to question your own attitudes, behaviour and expectations of others and a story that is full of surprises. This is a second chance romance with a great mix of characters as well as plenty of misunderstandings, interference and fate.

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book, via NetGalley. I have chosen to read it and this is my honest review after doing so.

ARC received for an honest review.

Not an original thought in this one. To be fair, it's chick lit - not romance. And chick lit is just an awful awful genre. When I requested the ARC (because I wanted something light and fluffy) it was listed as a romance. Had I known what it really was I wouldn't have asked for it.

So a chick meets a dude while she's on vacay. It's meaningful. We're supposed to be able to tell that based on their conversations. Which were strange and immature - apparently this means they're comfortable with one another and meant to be. Then they lose touch. Then they run into one another. Cue more stilted conversations. Add in evil significant others (this has to be my most hated plot device. The instant - instant - the H/h's significant other is a petty, snotty, immature, evil, backstabbing twat however the character stay with them "because" I know that I hate the book and hate the characters.)

The only reason it got 2 stars rather than one is because I like British/New Zealand/Australian writing.

‘An Impossible Thing Called Love’ is the perfect read for Valentine’s Day. It’s a book about missed opportunities, second chances and the bumpy path to true love.

Emmy and William meet by chance one magical night in Edinburgh and fall head over heels in love with one another. But after Emmy returns home and they correspond for some time via email and letter, William suddenly disappears, leaving Emmy bewildered and heartbroken.

Emmy moves from her home in Australia to work in London and the past and present collide as she comes face to face with someone she thought she would never see again. But why did William disappear so suddenly out of her life? And is it now too late for them to put together the broken pieces of their relationship?

After reading a lot of fantastic but dark and heavy books recently, this was exactly what I needed. Escapism at its very best! A light and lovely read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Fabulous!

Smitten!

That is the word that I would use to describe my feelings about the plot, characters and settings in this book.  Totally and utterly smitten!

It's been a while since I've read a romance novel and this was just pure indulgence.  From the first few pages until the very end I was compelled to read more - stopping was not an option.

William and Emmy meet on New Years Eve in Edinburgh and from the start they are just perfect together.  Unfortunately, Emmy has to return home to Australia and William to London.  Although they keep in touch for a long time, contact fades leaving them both hurt.  When Emmy and her partner Craig move to London, she is surprised to find that William works in the same place.  As they try to put the past behind them, can they remain good friends?

Emmy and William are just delightful but believable characters - the sort of people you just spend the whole book rooting for.  They are joined by a lovable ensemble of friends and work colleagues which just makes this book cosy and uplifting to read.  The settings of Edinburgh, Australia and mainly London provide a stunning backdrop for William and Emmy's friendship to blossom and really bring this story to life.

I cannot recommend this beautiful romance novel enough and I will be recommending to all my friends.

I wanted to like this story based on the cities it takes place in, but I didn't like the characters and plot devices.

After the initial meeting of the two main characters, the book has an epistolary section of rather clunky emails and letters, then -two years later- the story really begins. Drama is added for drama's sake, I kept flipping through my #NetGalley ARC to see why something suddenly was drama-worthy. And cue the evil spouse, a very predictable plot device.

I found this book to be a really engaging, sweet, modern, love story.

Emmy and William meet by chance in Edinburgh. She is an Aussie, on tour. When she goes back to Australia, they keep in touch by e-mail, by snail mail and by occasional parcel. Then suddenly - Emmy doesn't hear from William anymore. She tries to get on with her life, is in a relationship, but at the back of her mind, there is always William, and she wonders what the heck happened?

This book is all about second chances, miscommunication, and even serendipity, I think! I love the writing style, it made me really like these characters and get fully immersed in their story.

4.5 stars from me.

A chance encounter, sparks the beginning of a love story that not only spans continents but years too.
I throughly enjoyed this book, I found myself captivated by William and Emmy’s tale from the start and was routing for their story to have a happy ending.
Having never read any of Belinda Missen’s book previously I enjoyed her writing style, the plot development of the book and will read more from her.
Overall a really good read.

An Impossible Thing Called Love by Belinda Missen is the most charming, fun filled, delightful contemporary romance that will leave you feeling good.
A wonderful humorous look at love, with two lead characters exchanging many amusing dialogues. This book will have you smiling throughout as a great love radiates from its pages. I found An Impossible Thing Called Love very reminiscent of the film Love Story - the great love is tangible for all to feel.
The characters are perfectly drawn. I could 'see' them in my mind's eye, but more than that, I could 'feel' them. I felt an emotional attachment to them, as if the characters reached out from the pages of the book and touched my heart - never have I felt such an emotional response to fictional characters before.
The reader is in for a cosmopolitan treat as the action travels from Edinburgh to Australia to London to Paris, the city of love.
I really cannot praise An Impossible Thing Called Love highly enough. It's a perfectly charming feel good read with characters that remain long after the book is ended.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

The review: So this is a story that begins with a lot of chance meetings-chance meetings that funnily enough happen a lot in real life, but that we won't always recognise in fiction. And yet how many times do you bump into someone you hadn't known until recently? How many people travel halfway across the world only to bump into a neighbour, old friend or ex? I'll be honest, I'm always hearing these stories.

This is what happens with the whirlwind that is the lovely Emmy ( I will never ever be able to gush about this character enough!) Emmy and William have one of those chance meetings that result in them bumping into each other again and again. When the letters began I was so far in I was planning their first night together, their wedding and then suddenly realised this was fiction and so some roadblocks would be thrown in (to devastate my dreams;)).

The places we visited were vivid and perfect, the drama made me silently weep (not really but I was practically there!), the love stories so real and all encompassing and the characters simply epic.

This is a book I found due to blogging but conversely made me wish I hadn't as I would have liked more time with it. I'm generally Rom com only but this is a wistful, swoonerific read that captured my heart and has tempted me into wider reading waters. Beyond recommended and have bookmarked the amazing Ms. Missen to read in the future. Thanks so much to Rachel's Random Resources for the book in return for an honest review.

Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for offering me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a great rom-com!! I’ve had trouble finding romance books that I enjoy lately, mostly due to the writing styles. This author has a fantastic sense of humor and the characters were delightful. I also thought the pacing of the story was really well done.

If you love travel stories and humor, this is a must read. I will definitely be reading the author’s other works. This truly is a gem, and I hope the book gets more exposure so more readers can enjoy it.

There is something really special about New Year's Eve, more than it’s the end of a year, but something almost magical happens, almost like your fairy godmother appears and suddenly you get to find the love of your life! Well, maybe it doesn't happen to everyone, but it certainly happens to Australian globe trotter Emmy, when she meets trainee doctor Will, at the first aid tent in Edinburgh one new year's eve, and while determined to not let go when she returned home (after another chance meeting), they exchange email, and then address, but when the letters and emails stop coming, Emmy is heartbroken but decides to move on with her life, and she meets someone new. So life continues on, Emmy graduates from College and exciting things happen as Emmy gets a job in London! So Emmy and her boyfriend move to London, excited for a fresh start, but that all changes on the first day at work, when in strolls Will!

Oh My Goodness! What a freaking roller-coaster! This book is bloody Brilliant! And I don't say that lightly! From the first meeting of Emmy and Will, I was excited for this romance, because come on, who as a child doesn’t secretly want to be swept off their feet by a romantic pen pay! Okay... maybe that’s just me. But when Will went MIA, my heart broke, and what follows on London is a mixture of Yay! On oh my freaking lawd! What a stalker! Seriously though I cannot emphasize enough how good this book is!

I have never read a Belinda Missen book before, but that is going to certainly change ASAP! As her writing is gripping, and I became totally engrossed! So much so that a brass band could have paraded past me and I wouldn’t have heard a thing! This book deserves top marks!

I went into reading this not sure if I was really in the mood to read a romance book and ended up emerging a few hours later after being completely captivated by the story of William and Emmy!

This is such a sweet charming story that moves at a relatively quick pace, I’m not always a fan of the sort of instant-love plot lines but I felt like this one was able to work quite well as although it was a bit of a love at first sight sort of story, the characters did then communicate for quite a while before losing touch and finding each other again. I also loved that there was a chapter with there letters detailing the time that was passing as well as of course what was going on in their lives at the time. I did get a tad confused with the timeline at points as it did move quite fast but it didn’t take to much to figure out again. This was a book that I had guessed most of what would happen before it did but still I found it to be a really enjoyable, feel-good read.

Rating: 4.5/5

What if you are on holiday and you meet someone just before you have to head home to the other side of the globe? Not a very good timing, I would say, but it’s possible to keep in touch nowadays with all the technical gadgets we have and why not meet up again? You make plans and suddenly your soulmate does not respond anymore …

But nothing just happens, so it must be Cupid watching over them?

This is a romantic story about love found, lost and maybe found again? It’s full of funny conversations that made my day.

The book takes us from Scotland, to Australia, Paris and London to come full circle in Edinburgh.

It made you realise that you have to take a look at your own behaviour before you judge someone else. Maybe you are doing the exact same things that you can’t stand an other person doing to you.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. 4 stars.

Emmy and William- two people I both loved and shouted at (using my inside voice of course!) in equal measures!
This is a heartwarming tale of love, love lost, love maybe found again (or maybe not) that had me staying up to the wee small hours for "just another chapter".
Emmy meets William, moves away and loses touch then runs into him unexpectedly some time later- although she now has a boyfriend in tow.
The story is beautifully written with great descriptions of Edinburgh at Hogmanay, fantastic characters (some of whom I enjoyed hating very much!) and enough suspense in the love triangle to keep you reading to reach a resolution for both Emmy and William.
A fantastic lighthearted read- perfect for curling up with one evening (although only if you don't have to get up for work the next day!).
this is the first novel I have read by Belinda Missen but it will most certainly not be the last.

Absolutely Charming!
Sometimes, you have that book that you are sad that it’s over. Every once and a while, you have that book where you feel like you know the characters so well you talk about them as though they are old friends. An Impossible Thing Called Love is both. It is everything a modern romance should be. I know these characters, their dialogue is fresh and often laugh out loud funny. Some times, I want to knock their heads together, but mostly I’m just so glad I got to go on this journey with them. I can’t wait to see what Belinda Missen writes next.

What a lovely story! This is a feel-good, cozy read for this super cold and wet winter. I can also see it appealing in the warmth and happiness of Spring and Summer. We follow 2 people through the years and some pretty amazing locations to the HEA. I loved the story and the characters. They are faced with some pretty realistic problems in their path to love. Great read! Now... to look for another from this author!

This was a really sweet novel, it really was. There were moments which were terribly cute, but at the same time, as with most novels, moments when you wanted to smack the lead characters upside the head. And I have to admit, the protagonist, Emmy and I did not exactly...connect. I don't know, even though she's an Aussie and I am too, she and I just...I don't know. But she was still fun to read along with. William was a great male lead as well, perhaps not the most swoon-worthy to me at least, but still very likeable.
Look, overall, this was a fun novel to read. Is it going to be one of my favourite novels for ever and ever? Probably not. But, overall a great one to read on a rainy day with a big mug of tea or coffee (or hot chocolate).
Likeable characters, a sweet romance (with a bit of complicated history - I have to admit that I did skim reading all the letters....) and good writing makes for a satisfying read.
Congratulations to Belinda Missen and the publishing house!
Note: I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
