Alex Jarrod is a war veteran. When a flesh-eating parasite destroys his face, he returns from Afghanistan with a head full of nightmares. His world crumbles around him until he realises there is work to be done. Another war to fight.
DI Rosalind Kray has her hopes pinned on becoming the new DCI after tracking down another serial killer, but those in charge have other ideas.
After a small-time crook is killed in a hit and run and a serial burglar is brutally murdered, Kray suspects a vigilante is at work. But her bosses disregard her theory - until they discover a third victim.
Once again Kray finds herself on the trail of a serial killer but this one is different. This one lives in his own private war zone.
With her bosses on her heels Kray has her work cut out and the body count is rising.
But he’s not going to stop until the mission is complete … and Kray’s not going to stop until she finds him.
This is the third book in this dark and addictive series... this book had a bit of a different feel to it, wasn’t quite as gory, but still was captivating from first page to last.... what I love most about this series is getting into the mind of the killer... whether the motivation or justification for the killing is revenge as in the previous book or justice as in this book, it is simply fascinating to see into the psyche of a killer....
Rosalind Kray is back on the case, and a few steps ahead of everyone else... we really got a better look into who Rosalind truly is... we even got a bit of humor and perhaps even a love interest? She still drinks a little too much, is a little defensive, but I feel as though I got a better sense of who she is... I also really enjoyed watching her physically and mentally approach the investigation in this book...
Alex the killer in this book is disturbed and yet a sympathetic character... suffering from PTSD after serving in Afghanistan we really got a real glimpse into what made this man into a monster.... we got a look into the atrocities of war in Afghanistan, it was heartbreaking, but is killing ever justified? Can one man act as judge, jury, and executioner? This really puts you in an uncomfortable and confusing position when you don’t hate the bad guy quite the contrary you have compassion for him...
A well-crafted third installment in this intriguing series that can absolutely be read as a standalone... absolutely recommend to all crime thriller lovers this is an absolute must read series!
*** many thanks to Bloodhound Books for my copy of this book ***
He's on a mission. He spent time in the military, lose some friends and teammates while serving, and how that he's home again, not only does he have severe PTSD, he sees the justice system as not worthy of all those who gave their lives. He lives with nightmares and only one thing gives him any peace. He's a vigilante and he's hunting those that did some terrible deed and thanks to a particular judge, they've all been let go with little more than a slap on the wrist.
This killer makes sure that his justice fits the crime. A small-time crook who killed a young child in an auto accident. His sentence ... he himself is killed in a hit and run accident. Actually, he was run over time and time again.
A woman is killed after assaulting her roommate .... the roommate was found covered in cigarette burns. The punishment is she herself burned repeatedly by a blow torch.
DI Rosalind Kray is lead investigator. With her bosses looking over her shoulder at every move she makes, she knows that she has to once again stop another serial killer ... and the body count is rising. But he’s not going to stop until the mission is complete … and Kray’s not going to stop until she finds him.
Fast-paced, full of action, a few twists, I was not disappointed with this 3rd book of an exceptional series.
I like the blend of Kray as the ultimate professional and her personal life. She feels that she's not treated fairly when it comes to advancement in her department. Someone with far less experience with serial killers will get the new title and responsibility. Her personal life is not so structured. She visits her husband's grave whenever she needs to talk to someone. She drinks a little to excess, but it never affects her job. There is a new man in her life and it would be wonderful if she didn't feel like she was cheating on her husband. And the new man is also harboring a secret which may affect this latest case.
Although part of a series, this one is easily read as a stand-alone. But I would highly recommend starting at the beginning of this terrific series.
Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this Crime Fiction, Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Any one who follows my blog will know I’m a huge crime thriller lover, not the Cosy Murder mystery garden variety type but the dark, gritty ones, the type that keep you awake at night (make of that what you will). So I always look forward to reading a book by Rob Ashman, this is an author whose fertile imagination allows him to create interesting characters and the most shocking and original story lines. Suspended Retribution is the third instalment in the DI Rosalind Kray series, I raved about the first two books in the series but this book is the icing on the proverbial cake, what a fabulous and deeply disturbing read this one turned out to be.
In Suspended Retribution we see a different side to DI Rosalind Kray both in her personal and work life, at times she’s ballsy, confident and reckless but behind the facade is a woman tormented by grief and self doubt which help to make her a relatable protagonist in my opinion. Rob Ashman has an incredible knack of creating the most twisted killers who carry out the most terrible crimes and you have every reason to loathe them but then he gives you their back story and before you know it they get under your skin. I couldn’t help feeling some empathy for Alex Jarrod a war veteran turned killer (not a spoiler as in the book description), but as to the “why” Alex went from being a soldier who protected people to a killer, you will just have to read the book. Although I would never think killing someone was right there was a tiny part of me that couldn’t help thinking the victims were getting their very own kind of “karma”.
The crimes are vividly described enabling the reader to form all to real mental images of the victims and the crime scenes, luckily for me I’m not squeamish but there were a couple of times I actually grimaced at the authors descriptions. In a nut shell Suspended Retribution made for a disconcerting read but also one that was nigh on impossible to put down. This crime series is one that’s going from strength to strength the plots are imaginative, the characters are brilliantly depicted, it’s a series that excites me as you are never sure which direction the next book will take. Would I recommend this book? Most definitely, in fact I would recommend the book, the series, or any of Rob Ashman’s books.
He has done it again. Another fantastic story, with an unusual take. The skill to tell us early on who the killer is and yet keep us on the edge of the seat until the end, again. Also some strong moral dilemmas. Can't wait for book 4.
I can't believe we are already onto the third book in the DI Rosalind Kray series. What a series it has been so far as well. I have to say that without a doubt it is one of my favourites as the author consistently delivers and has never let me down. Whilst it reads easily as a stand alone, some readers may benefit from reading at least the first book for a bit of background on Kray.
The book feels slightly different to it's predecessors even though it is the same layout of the story flicking between the killer and Kray and her fellow officers working on the case. I think it's because we also get taken to Afghanistan and seeing the horrors that the character had to endure. It gave it an almost sombre feel to it but not in a bad way.
As I have come to expect with this authors books, Suspended Retribution is another story where you need to buckle up and hold on tight. The pace doesn't relent making it very hard to put the book down and carry on with any day to day chores that need doing. I so enjoyed seeing Kray's personal life getting better for her as she feels very much like a good friend by now. Her work life, not so much and I loved the bit of humour the author throws in with her job hunting.
Suspended Retribution is another fast paced read that I struggled to put down. Gripping from the off and has thrills and chills a plenty. There's not much more I can say about these books that I haven't already said. They are brilliant and for die hard crime fans they are an absolute must read!
My thanks to Bloodhound Books for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
This is book three in the DI Rosalind Kray series. I was super excited to read this and thankfully the author didn’t disappoint me. As I’ve loved the previous two books I highly recommend you read the first two books before reading this one. It will help you get to know the main character DI Rosalind Kray, Roz.
Roz believes there’s a vigilante at work. Unfortunately her bosses don’t believe her. When a third victim shows up Roz is the hunt for a serial killer.
I really liked how we get to see into the mind of the killer with his point of view. It brings so much more to the story. Roz as a character is growing which is great to see throughout this series..
A really well written story that I highly recommend.
I really enjoyed this book. This has been an excellent series - fast paced and very gritty. Rosalind Kray is a splendid character and Rob Ashman really knows how to ratchet up the tension.
Rob Ashman! Definitely "Author of the Moment" and for the future. Another cracking read from Rob Ashman. This 3rd book in the Roz Kray series is something very different to the first 2 in the series, but every bit as good. A cleverly written gripping plot. Interesting and intriguing aspect regarding the murderer. Roz's personal and professional life is a great storyline too. This was such a gripping , nerve wracking read that I started and finished this book on the same day. It appeared to me to be very well researched regarding PTSD. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
Rob Ashman has written another cracking book in the DI Rosalind Kay series. This book had me gripped from the start and I hated having to put it down! I found Alex Jarrod a fascinating character and couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. Great to see DI Kray at her best again with her wit and sarcasm. I enjoy this authors style of writing, even in the midst of the grit and suspense, there is still great humour which all works well together. I highly recommend this book and the previous 2 in the series.
This is the third in the trilogy of DI Roz Kray. It is not as gruesome as the previous two but is still dark, gritty and highly entertaining.
A vigilante is on the trail of criminals who in his mind have been given soft sentences. Alex Jarrod is a war veteran suffering from PTSD and a score to settle. Can Roz Kray convince her bosses that these murders are linked?
Roz is still battling her past and drinking too much wine whilst taking long baths. Her fledgling relationship with Dr Ding Dong is interesting and adds a certain light heartedness to the story.
When I find myself empathizing with a serial killer and his reasoning for carrying out his killing I know the author has created a well rounded individual. There are killers I love to hate but not Alex, the descriptions of what he and his unit endured in Afghanistan tore my heart apart.
Rob Ashman is a very talented author and this series is growing in depth and development of character in each book. Bring on the next.
An ominous insight into a killer’s mind, a murder disguised as a hit-and-run, an investigation leading nowhere and a competitive colleague, and on top of that a private life she needs to get in order… Roz Kray has her hands full in ‘Suspended Retribution,’ the captivating third instalment in the DI Rosalind Kray detective series!
| Storyline | “My past is an armour I cannot take off, no matter how many times you tell me the war is over.”
DI Rosalind Kray #3
‘There is every need for me.” Who says this and why? What are their plans? It sounds ominous! DI Rosalind Kray acting DCI we should say – is called to a hit-and-run. But as soon as she examines the scene and discovers the blood spatters, “the scars across her back began to tingle,” a sure indication of something being off. Roz is not mistaken: this is murder most foul. The victim is a known criminal which makes the list of his enemies pretty long and an elaborate task for Roz, DS Duncan Taverner, and their team.
For Dan Bagley, there is only one obvious suspect, much to Roz’ annoyance. She hoped he’d be back in Manchester by now… Whilst we are witness to gruesome and pivotal war events in a man’s past, we also see him observant in the present and wonder who he is, this tormented and fucked up human being you can’t help feeling sorry for but who at the same time has no trouble following his vengeful plan. Will Roz and her team get to him before it is too late? Before murder comes too close to home?
| My Thoughts | Wow and wow! Love it! After the pretty gruesome murders in ‘This Little Piggy’ (thank you, Rob Ashman!), this third book is the next in the same series but also feels completely different. The author has gone through a lot of trouble and research to paint an impressive portrayal of his killer, tormented by the atrocities of war. This craftily and cleverly construed novel is a detective thriller, yes, but also makes us aware of how traumatic events can change our perspective on the world we live in. Not to mention the influence of it on someone’s life. Fascinating and insightful, this tormented soul whom you cannot but also feel sorry for, portrayed by the author.
I loved reconnecting with Roz Kray, so hoped she would get her life back together – I’ve grown to love Roz and, knowing what she has been through, seeing how she struggles to pick up her life, you cannot but hope that she will succeed. I will not mention more but let’s just say there are good times and frustrating ones, with disappointment and a development that keep the reader interested! Want to know more? Read Rob Ashman’s gripping, insightful, emotive crime thriller, ‘Suspended Retribution’ – a detective novel with that perfect mix of police procedural and the personal life of the detectives – this time also with a fascinating insight into PTSD.
Finished this beauty yesterday morning. Amazingly, brilliant, fantastic, awesome story. Roz is a great character, full of attitude (and wine) she's funny and doesn't put up with any nonsense that's for sure. I also have to mention Mr Ding Dong the head pathologist with his waistcoats and tight trousers. This book will draw you in from the first page and will keep you in your toes until the very end. Can't recommend it highly enough as well as his others in the series and The Mechanic Trilogy xx
Oh my goodness I LOVE the characters in this series, they are excellent in this plotline – this is a very well crafted thriller that had me addicted from the first page to the last. The writing style is excellent and the flow is just brilliant.
The plot is completely additive and I sat and read it all the evening I started it, it is very hard to put down and well, if I am honest I had no intention of stopping reading it as soon as I’d started it!
I have given every book I have read by this author 5 stars – he is definitely one of the stand out authors for me in his genre. I can’t believe that this is the third book already it seems like it was only a few weeks ago that I was eagerly awaiting the first book in the DI Kray series! This book is a fantastic addition to the series, a complete page turner, addictive and hard hitting – superb – 5 stars from me!!
Here is an author that writes brilliant books. It is always full of twists and turn that will have you gripped from the very first pages. Rob Ashman's book's I Highly recommend these. They are just brilliant! 5 stars for the book!
However, the audio book and Narrated by: Nicholas Camm was "Bloody awful!!!!" I wasted a credit for this and so annoyed!!!!! but NO STARS for the Narrator! Worst I have ever heard and I am fan of audio books!!!!
I ended up buying the book in the end to read it. Shame though as the book was brilliant.
Alex Jarrod is a veteran of the Afghanistan war. He has returned home but suffers from severe PTSD. He is having a hard time adjusting and is outraged when he learns that some criminals have been given a slap on the wrist after they murdered someone. Alex decides he is going to be a vigilante and make those that did the crime pay in a fitting death.
Roz Kray is back and hoping for a promotion although it seems her superiors have other things in mind for the new position. Roz gets the murder cases and can just tell that there is a serial killer although her bosses don’t agree. But when the bodies start piling up it’s going to be up to Roz to stop Alex.
I love Rob Ashman’s books and have to say that there are some horrible things that happen in this book it is not as dark as the other two books. But thing that really got me was I could understand why Alex was killing those that escaped justice and agree with him and almost hoped that Roz didn’t catch him. But you can’t have vigilantes, at some point they lose their original mission and become what they originally set out to right.
As for Roz, I felt for her with her disappointment at work. But I was so glad to see that she was starting to move on from her husband’s death, although we find her at his grave talking to him several times. I hope that she finds that happiness that has been lost.
This is an amazing series and one I strongly recommend checking out. Suspended Retribution is a killer story that could be read as a standalone but to really get the full effect I recommend reading the series in order. You won’t be disappointed.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
Will Chill you to the Bone...and then some more...
Rosalind Kray is back and hoping to go from acting DCI to DCI after her success on previous cases..She is so close she can almost taste the victory, when she is pipped to the post by Bagley and is more than a little mad about it..Alex Jarrod comes back from Afghanistan a changed man..Scarred by the things he witnessed there, and by a flesh rating disease that almost destroyed half his face...Kray's life is never easy and when a body is found she has her own ideas , but when she shares she is ignored and inside Kray a quiet rage is building. When Kray bumps into Dr.Chris Millican at the morgue all the flutterings that she has tried to hold down for so long come to the surface...and ding dong merrily on high...after all the loss of the past year Leah is a smitten kitten..But out there in the shadows there are more murders...gruesome...horrendous...and it seems the killer is unstoppable...Kray with her own scars burning into her makes the connection...but the killer has their own plan...and like the toss of a coin who will live and who will die....Third book in this dark twisted brilliant series...All the stars to Kray...I just hope there is a book four....
Rob Ashman has delivered again with this well-executed, exhilarating read. This book successfully gets you into the head and mindset of Alex Jarrod, a PTSD victim and Jarrod will not be stopped until he has completed his mission... This book started a little slow for me, that was until I got my head around who was who and what was going on and then it became all-consuming until the final page. Just brilliant.
Rob Ashman just gets better and better and I very much look forward to reading the last book in this series.
A brilliant criminal thriller, read in one session. The pages just kept on turning themselves. Fast paced and an excellent storyline. Some of the characters really wind me up...feel like punching them! ( But it all adds to the intensity ) Don't know how Roz keeps her cool, although she is more than capable of putting people in their place when needs be.... she is a tough little cookie. Well done Rob Ashman...you did it again!
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the copy in exchange for my honest review.
4.5/5 stars!
I’ve been a huge fan of Rob Ashman since I picked up book on of his Mechanic series and I haven’t been let down yet! Always fast-paced and a quick read, he immediately sucks you in from the beginning. While you could probably read this as a standalone, I would highly recommend picking up books one and two in the series.
A new challenge for DI Roz Kray as a vigilante is on the loose and taking matters into his own hands. As with the other books in the series, we get a glimpse into the mind of the serial killer – which I will never tire of! We also get to see the effects of PTSD with Alex Jarrod, a war veteran that has suffered horrifically in Afghanistan. He is convinced that there is another war to be had, and he won’t stop until his mission is completed.
As with all his other books, I would recommend this to those looking for a gritty and quick crime fiction novel! How can you say no to a serial killer thriller? I can’t wait for the next release from Ashman.
Once again Rob Ashman proves that the voices in his head give him the most amazing storylines! Here’s hoping they keep talking to you, Rob! He delivers the killer hook opening drawing the reader in with the promise of something quite evil to come! A slow seductive introduction to our killer sets the nerve endings tingling: narrated from his POV it is clear that this is a character with a complex background which will thrill readers as they uncover his story!
In Suspended Retribution, Roz Kray is acting D.C.I. a position she believes is rightfully hers but her superiors have other ideas causing Roz to rethink her whole future. We, once again, meet ACC Mary Quade who swings between loving and hating Roz and her nemesis DI Dan Bagley. Damn, Bagley and Quade get on my goat – I completely understand Roz’s frustration at being passed over for promotion, her mind is shit hot at processing clues and evidence while Bagley flounders around with not an original idea in his head but always wanting to take the glory! There is a real tension between the trio and Roz is not the sort of woman to mince her words so you can be sure that sparks are about to fly! I love Roz’s wee quirks; they make her a well-rounded character; her feisty personality and temper make her a legend. She is certainly a character that will worm her way under your skin!
This time around there may also be some romance in the air for Roz in the shape of Home Office Pathologist, Dr Chris Millican. Will Roz, finally be able to shake free the ghosts of her past and move on? Will the path of true love run smoothly? You will just need to read it and see folks!
There’s always something more than just “serial killer” and “police procedural” in Rob’s books, there is always something that makes you question the motivations of others, leading you to an understanding of the whys. It’s difficult to feel sorry for the victims and I do love a serial killer that metes out their own sense of justice and Rob gives us this in abundance: he is the master of creating characters that you really shouldn’t like, that you really shouldn’t be rooting for and making you look at things from a different perspective. Retribution, justice and trauma are all themes running through the book, Rob does a fine job of planting seeds of doubt in your mind challenging the “right” reaction to one of understanding creating that whole what if scenario in your head. Just how far would you go to seek retribution…
Suspended Retribution is a dark, visceral and gritty read; its themes will make you stop and think and question whose side are you really on. With twists and turns that will have you reading way past your bedtime, this is one that you are not going to miss!
I read books 1 and 2 back to back and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline I found the writing to be a little sub par in places. There were lots of annoying, repetitive phrases used and both books used the same 'formula'. Almost identical in structure just slightly different storylines. I was worried that the 3rd novel would be the same but I was wrong. Although it kind of does follow the same structure the writing has evolved and is of a much better quality. The storyline isn't as gruesome but none the less harrowing. All these factors combined and the author has created a brilliant book. I really hope there are more books to follow!
This is the third in the series and, like all series, it is best to start from book one and read in order. I would especially recommend you do just that with this series as, apart from the fact they are all really brilliant reads, main character Roz does need proper getting to know as she is a bit complex. When a couple of small time, low life crooks both meet dodgy ends, Roz starts to think that there might be a vigilante at work. Sadly, as has happened in the past, persuading her bosses of her theory proves difficult to say the least. Then a third turns up dead and they start to think she may have something. But, her track record in catching serial killers doesn't give her any kudos with her bosses and she is watched every step of the way which was pretty shocking and uncomfortable to read at times but also, sadly, probably quite realistic. Sigh. But, this disrespect actually works in her favour and gives her a lucky break. Meanwhile, as always with this author's books, we also hear directly from the killer. I really do love this insight into what always proves to be a really depraved mind but here, well, let's just say that Mr Ashman has really excelled himself. I can't say more for obvious reasons but his story is not easy to read and you can almost understand how the killer's life experiences changed him and it all just tugged at my sympathy somewhat. Those of you with an aversion to the more grisly offerings will be pleased to know that this story wasn't as graphic as the previous two. Not that that took anything away from the hard hitting nature of the crimes, they were just as hard hitting, just not as bloody! I guess this also meant that there was more emphasis put on the way the story was written, removing the shock factor and all, and I am pleased to say that the author came up trumps here too. Roz herself is coming on nicely as a character. With the past she has, there's a lot for her to overcome and the lack of support and acknowledgement from her peers and bosses really doesn't help. But what it does do is make her even more determined to succeed and it's a joy to watch her do just this. On a personal level, things are also getting better and this is also well deserved. I could bang on and on about all the other things that are really great in this book. Characters, pacing, balance, everything is exactly as it should be for a book of this genre. But what I guess the main thing for me is that it gripped me from page one, held me captive throughout and left me satisfied at the end. The only bad point being that I now have to wait for the next one. My thanks go to the Publisher for the chance to read this book.
Osoby jsou popsané srozumitelně, i když ani jedna z nich si vysloveně nezískala mé sympatie a nepatří určitě k mým oblíbeným knižním hrdinům.
A man is battling his demons, having fought in Afghanistan and seen things a man should never see. “I fought for my country but I never fought for this”. Now back home he is taking the law into his own hands as justice as he sees it is not being done. Meanwhile acting DCI Roz Kray is not only trying to find out about a hit and run that is looking more like attempted murder but also going through the selection process for the DCI role- along with many others. Rob has a knack of making a book so gripping to read that I could complete this in one sitting (if real life didn’t get in the way- like sleep). Yes there are some uncomfortable scenes- nothing that gave me nightmares or put me off food- and only when relevant. The rest is an easy read. We know “whodunnit” but it’s the chase and the clues that have us gripped. Rob holds you into the pages and you have read another 3 chapters before you know where you are- the sign of a craftsman. A brilliantly entertaining read that I really didn’t want to put down- says it all. For more reviews please see my blog http://nickibookblog.blogspot.co.uk/ or follow me on Twitter @nickijmurphy1
A third triumph for Rob Ashman (author of the Mechanic Trilogy) with his DI Roz Kray series. Still battling her inner demons from past cases and tragedies (still drinking but eating a little better we're glad to hear!) Roz and her team are once again chasing down a serial killer with an agenda all of his own. As in the other books we know who the killer is all along, as parts of the story are related by the tormented ex-soldier himself giving a lot of insight into his motives and what has brought him to his current state. There are lighter touches too, like the little “asides” Roz mutters to herself which bring a certain humour, and the killings are a little less gruesome than she has faced in the past. Also once again I had a certain amount of sympathy for the killer and very little for any of the victims which I think is a measure of how cleverly the book is written. It is a fast paced and exciting read, and keeps the reader gripped to the end. This is a great series, of which I hope there will be more to come, as I am becoming a big fan!! Highly recommended!
The third is this compelling series featuring DI Rosalind Kray can be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading the previous books, as Roz needs to be understood and warmed to. It is great to see her character grow. Rob has taken a slight turn and the book isn’t as graphic as the previous two in the series, due to the subject matter. It is NOT any less harrowing for this. I found myself connecting with the characters from both sides of the law and Rob really did make the emotions and reality of his characters shine and come across through the pages. Rob proved that life isn’t simply black and white. While the tension heats up and the team are hot on the trail, we learn from the point of view of the protagonist. Clever. We are also given a mix of humour and insight in to Roz’s life especially how she is moving on and with DR Ding Dong no less… Another excellently written book by Ashman that shows his diversity and he isn’t one to shy away from a challenge and pulled back the graphic horror, but gave us horrors that live inside us instead.
Suspended Retribution was the first book I have read by Rob Ashman, but I’m positive it won’t be the last I really loved it. Sometimes you can get books that say they are thrillers but really are a bit ‘run of the mill’ this book is so different it’s a thriller with a capital T, it was fast, gritty and scary all at the same time. It hits the ground running and doesn’t stop.
I hadn’t realised that it was the third in a series but it didn’t matter, it was easy to pick up the storyline and I have since bought and read the previous two books.
This book should come with a warning -: DO NOT START THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO SIT UP MOST OF THE NIGHT READING IT.
I really wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.
