Hwang Sok-yong (황석영) was born in Hsinking (today Changchun), Manchukuo, during the period of Japanese rule. His family returned to Korea after liberation in 1945. He later obtained a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Dongguk University (동국대학교).
In 1964 he was jailed for political reasons and met labor activists. Upon his release he worked at a cigarette factory and at several construction sites around the country.
In 1966–1969 he was part of Korea's military corps during the Vietnam War, reluctantly fighting for the American cause that he saw as an attack on a liberation struggle.
This is one of Korean classics, the very well known epic about Jang Gil San. I read the edition published in 12 volumes and while it was very long, it didn't feel like it. Even though this masterpiece can not be compared to any other book, it may be a mix between Robin Hood and Romance of the Three Kingdoms jut so you have a round image. It tells a very heartful and moving story not only about said hero but also about the Korean society at that time, the failure of the governmental structure, the rebellion of those who suffered under corruption and more.
While reading this, I can't even imagine this story in any other language than Korean. I strongly believe that many emotions would get lost during the translation or it would require long notions on how to understand this and that word.
