In an endless desert floats the Mud Whale, an island city of clay moving by magic, containing a small community where most die young their life spans cut short by their own magic. Chakuro diligently chronicles their lives... This all changes when he meets a young girl and they are suddenly attacked by an Empire! What will be the citizens of Falaina do?!
First I have to talk about the beauty that is a paper volume, specifically, Children of the Whales vol 6 and WOW! I've always thought the art was gorgeous... even reading it in digital form, but the paper version... Well, let me say that you've got to BUY these volumes in paper just for the beauty that is the covers!! And the art inside is equally as gorgeous. You really can envision the post apocalyptic world that they are in... you can see the beauty and the danger that the world of sand and nous holds for this group of people trying to survive. And the hope they hold onto is shown visually on the page... it leaves me breathless!
In this volume the plot explodes with all of the new information that has come to light. Why didn't the people understand what their nous can do? Why are there marked and unmarked? These are answered even as other events are rising up to threaten the plan that the council makes with the major and those who know the secrets of their whale's past. I love how Ouni and the moles are constantly brought into the story... you know these kinds of rebels exist in every society and they unknowingly threaten achieving their dream.
What I love about this series and Children of the Whales vol 6 is no different is that the mangaka balances horrible events and choices with hope and dreams and perseverance. And we see that with Suou the mayor and his dreams for the marked and for Ouni's future as well. Those without hope though are on the move sowing their seeds... so time is ticking... will the hopeless beat the hopeful before they arrive at the promised land? That is where the tension tries to choke us... The whale is moving into parts of the sea of sand its never been in before and its as deadly as it is gorgeous!
Children of the Whales vol 6 shows that the magaka is totally serious about making us sweat even when the war has been delayed. There are threats from allies, threats from rebels among them, threats from unexpected parties and not everyone is going to make it out of the sea of sand... I can't wait for Children of the Whales vol 7 ... oh wait! I don't have to... here it is right here...
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

EN Another thing I love and forgot to mention: the scattered pieces of humour! It brightens the manga despite the darkest of some scenes!
See, my problem is that I've been giving every volume 5 stars. I stand by that, but now I need a 6 stars or some shit.
I had to get up and walking away from this book two or three times towards the end just from overwhelming emotion (especially with Ouni, because I'm so attached to that guy it's unhealthy). I'm so proud of Suou and what he's trying to do even if I think it's going to blow up (also lowkey shipping Suou and Ouni wtf Nico) but I know he's gonna be hurting soon as things progress. Chakuro is still this innocent, optimistic kid with so much life stuff just piling up and he's handling it so earnestly and bravely. The twins were a factor I was not expecting but could make things exceptionally messy. This secret is...yeah.
I've said it before and I'll say it again but the GODDAMNED. ART. Holy shit. I'm showing stuff to my family constantly. I want it on my walls. This cover on particular I've lost a stunning amount of time to just starring at. I love how the characters are drawn; clothes, expressions. I want to live in that world, explore it for hours. Ugh.
By the time I'm done here I'm gonna be demanding a 10 star rating system to accomodate my love for this series and I will feel justified.
With the secret of the Nous Falaina out to us and Chakuro and Suou, the Elders are confronted about it. As they explain why they had kept it secret all these years, we get to see how the Unmarked had been trying to protect the Marked, albeit in a messed up way. This is probably a situation in which the motives matter more than the method, yes, but the fact is that it can be easily used to twist their original intent. Like how Rochalizo uses it as a bargaining chip to make Chakuro and Lykos obey and ferry him, or even the possibility of what the Moles might do with that information.
Another faction of the Moles, a set of twins, who don't like that the Unmarked are ruling the Mud Whale, are trying to create division, and that is before they even know about the secret! Ouni tries to knock sense into them, but even he feels aloof from the people around him, and the Commander whispering in his ears is not a great addition to that feeling. The motivations of characters are now becoming distinct, with individual characteristics manifesting and making us wonder how it would affect their journey going forward. Would they all be united if they have no common cause to do so? Part of it feels all so tragic like Shinono's story, or even the simple assertion that the children didn't usually have close relationships with their parents because of the Marked-Unmarked thing.
Along with the character development, the world becomes wider in this volume. We see two new places - which were like legends to Lykos - but like the Mud Whale, she gets to see it. It recaptures the post-apocalyptic feel with those places. The story fills me with nervousness about what could happen with the threads spun so far, and a bit of excitement too.
Is it just me or does the cover art seem more awesome each subsequent volume? The Mud Whale is making its way to Amonlogia, but along the way they encounter bizarre ruins in the Sea of Sand—the Time Tower and the Castle of Salt. Their new found mobility and recent bloodshed creates new factions interested in vying for control of the ship while Aíma seems to have plans of her own for the Mud Whale. And, a new mystery regarding how Rochalízo’s crew powers his ship is hinted at. There are many layers of intrigue weaved through the story and there is still the larger secret that Chakuro now must keep along with the Elders. Another enjoyable volume!
The majority of our main casts of characters learns the truth of the Marked as well as the rest of the tale of their home and what it is and what it means. We learn the heavy secrets the Committee of Elders holds. Essentially, everything involving the Elder's Committee is now on the table. However, there are still mysteries to uncover concerning particular characters such Ouni and the Commander. It is also yet to be seen just what intent Neri or Aima hold for the people on the Mud Whale, though Aima is certainly empowering the [annoying] twins and their destructive tendencies. It seems things may only get harder from here for everyone involved, perhaps a large part of the world itself.
i’m really enjoying the story. despite the lore being overwhelming at times, i like that the more important parts are brought up in a more simple manner when needed. i also enjoy the variety of characters and interactions we get to see between them. i have one more volume left before i need to buy the next ones !
3.5* Suou must be protected at all costs. Meanwhile this got a little confusing. The story can be hard to follow with the made up names but this took it to another level. Still enjoying the series greatly though.
