Over the course of five editions, the ways in which biology is taught have dramatically changed. We have seen a shift away from the memorization of details, which are easily forgotten, and a movement toward emphasizing core concepts and critical thinking skills. The previous edition of Biology strengthened skill development by adding two new features, called CoreSKILLS and BioTIPS (described later), which are aimed at helping students develop effective strategies for solving problems and applying their knowledge in novel situations. In this edition, we have focused our pedagogy on the five core concepts of biology as advocated by “Vision and Change” and introduced at a national conference organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
My textbook for my biology class was this book. Overall, I would say I liked the book, however there were often times were terms were confusing or the book seemed to contradict itself. Coming from a Christian perspective, this book also was very secular and often regarded back to millions/billions of years and evolution in general. There is a ton of information in here though, and if you want a more in depth study for biology this would work well.
Some of the chapters were very illy organized. It would benefit the students if they did a little more presenting the information and a little less contrast and compare. I found the earlier chapters more well written than the latter.
What can I say about this? I’m a science nerd who reads text books? I’m sure science has made new discoveries and evolved since I read this long ago, but it was good then……. If text books are your sort of thing.
I owe my A in biology to this book because lecture was the most confusing thing I ever had to do. Okay, I hated it at first but then I began to actually understand and it’s not bad for science book once I started understanding biology.
