Alexis Silver has always defied convention: in the 1920s, she tried to attend college. She also prefers to live on land and she doesn’t really care for the taste of human flesh.
Oh, by the way, she’s also a mermaid.
A century of existence comes with a certain amount of boredom, but work as a private investigator in the Pacific Northwest offers a pleasant combination of access to the sea, intrigue, and helping others.
When a well-to-do woman hires her to find her missing adventurer brother, Alexis feels like she’s landed straight in the middle of the sort of action movie they just don’t make anymore.
The man’s trail leads all over the globe, but she suspects he’s not dead—yet.
An international mining conglomerate evidently wants whatever the missing explorer has found, and they’re more than willing to kill anyone who gets in their way.
J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
These stories are amazing. I'm loving what I've read thus far. Besides I love J.R. Rain and everything he write with whomever he writes with. I've never been disappointed.
Alexis is a 118 year old mermaid possessed by a companion demon. But she’s not your typical Peter Pan-type mermaid. This one has needle teeth and claws and prefers raw meat. Still Alexis has retained most of her previous human qualities and mostly eats fish and reserves her grosser diet to Nazis, etc.
Currently, Alexis works as a private detective in the Washington state area with a beautiful home conveniently on the shore. This story has her working two cases. One pro bono trying to get the goods on possible deceit in a child support case which ends up with a very interesting high tech result. The other is searching for the missing adventurer brother of a well-to-do young woman with two precocious kids.
Footnote: 1) I love the idea of an underwater alien site but the traps were too common and boring.
Fave scenes: pro bone & cocoa, the lion in the study, Alexis trying to stand with a tail and escaping the collapsing cavern.
This is a well-written, fun and easy to read book. Alexis Silver became a mermaid in the 1920's when she "died" after a shipwreck. Now, she is a private investigator and uses her talents/powers to help others.
She is hired by a rich woman to find her adventurer brother. Alexis can't seem to catch a break and begins to wish that she hadn't taken the case. Then, she finds out that Ethan has purchased an underwater habitat so that he can investigate a mysterious discovery. That's where the fun really begins!
With shades of Indiana Jones, Alexis and Ethan go through a gauntlet of booby traps (pardon the pun) and she begins to think that Ethan might be on to something in his belief of aliens. The dialogue is witty, the action is great and Alexis is one of my favorite fantasy characters. I hope that the authors continue this series for a long time because they are just what I need when I'm looking for a lighthearted urban fantasy mixed with mystery.
The narrator is absolutely perfect for the book and her different voices/accents added a lot to my listening enjoyment. I will definitely add Kelley Huston's name to my list of favorite narrators! I was given the chance to listen to this book by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
I really enjoyed this the second book in this series. Alex is a mermaid and a PI, who has a couple of cases that she takes at the same time. The one she thinks is going to be boring turns out to be the more interesting one for her. This definitely isn't your typical mermaid story and I love her relationship with Licinia. I read and listened to the audiobook of this and enjoyed both
Alexis is in another interesting adventure. This time she has to find a missing brother who likes to travel to archeological sites. It was highly entertaining, and I read it in one day. I wish it didn't end. I guess that is a mark of a good book.
I love Alex!! Such a good read!!! Definitely need the next book ASAP. Love her Dark Master as well. Don't want to give away too much but this "alien" business is interesting? The possibilities are endless. Now the CIA??? Can't wait to read more.😀
This fast and fun book takes the reader to the depths of the Pacific ocean where an actual amateur explorer is searching for proof of aliens. The excitement continues for Alexis as she searches for this missing person.

When Ethan fails to check in with his sister as arranged, she panics and hires Alexis Silver to find him. That is the last thing that a certain mining company wants, and they’ll stop at nothing to insure that Ethan is never found! Then there is the matter of a dead beat husband hiding funds from his soon to be ex! All things considered, Alex has her hands full in Deep Silver, book two of the wildly creative, haunting, and at times frighteningly horrifying, Alexis Silver Series! Why frighteningly horrifying? Well, you see, Alex is a Mermaid, and not the cute, innocent wide eyed mermaid of children’s cartoons, but a siren of the sea, lure sailors to their deaths, bad a$$, kick a$$ real deal mermaid! No spoilers! Grab your headphones, snacks, drinks, and all will be revealed as you listen to this fabulously written, brilliantly narrated story! I have to say, I loved everything about Deep Silver! The characters are off the charts original, and so well developed! The plots, yes PLOTS are interesting, fast moving, and complete! And, oh my stars, the narration. Astoundingly perfect! Every voice, every inflection, every emotion, every sound effect, every spoken word, clear, consistent and perfect! Oh, and that last chapter? Ya got me on the hook, just reel me in! Again, no spoilers, but make no mistake, we are NOT talking cliffhanger here, just mind blowing excitement for the next book! As for Deep Silver, five fabulous stars across the board!!!
This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
It's a fantasy / paranormal / cozy mystery - a mix I really like - with the main character who is intelligent, funny, witty and doen't treat herself too seriosuly...:) She works as a PI though she doesn't really need to - which means she is in it not for the money but for the job itself:) And she does everything to solve her cases, putting her heart to it...
The second book in the series is even better than the first, though it's different in that the case Alexis has to deal with seems less urgent and not so emotional as the first one we followed her in. But it's equally entertaining, with some great twists to the plot... It's also faster in terms of the pace, and more balanced in tone.
Narration by Ms Huston is great, with the spot on pace of her reading and voices really matching perfectly the individual characters.
So, if you haven't met Alexis Silver yet, don't wait, grab book one and book two and just listen - you won't regret it:)

This series must be read in order. The first book is "Silver Light". This is the second book. I can't wait to read "Silver Quarrel"!
Together with her Dark Master Licinia life as a mermaid isn't half bad. Working as a PI keeps her (them) from being bored senseless. Sometimes they even get to help people. Her child support case seems pretty straight forward but the second case she got, the missing person's case, is surely going to bite her in the tail! How is the deadbeat dad hiding money? Why does he not want to take ample care of his child? Where did the brother go that he can't keep in touch with his sister? Could be be held hostage somewhere? Why have there been no ransom demands? What did he find that is so important? Can she get to the bottom of the disappearance before she goes missing too?
What a refreshing read! I have enjoyed following Alexis, who is a Private Investigator who isn’t afraid of using her special talents. Like the previous installment, this one dived a bit into her world and it was refreshing. I absolutely love the mystery side of investigating and I found this one to have some Indiana Jones action as well. I’m very intrigued as to what happens next and I’m looking forward to listening to the next installment. - The narrator Kelley Huston did a wonderful job portraying Alexis and the secondary characters. Her voice is pleasant and easy to follow along. The tones and inflections are spot on! She certainly brought the story telling to another level. Highly recommend!
Don’t drink whilst listening to this..... It might save your iPad when you laugh at loud at some of the things that Alexis comes out with 🤣 Absolutely loved listening to this Alexis is so funny and when you get to within an hour of the end don’t say I hadn’t warned you . It was good to hear Anna and her grandparents mentioned from book one . Alexis has a rapport with young children and her interaction with the girl who comes in with her mummy to ask for Alexis’s help is so cute and funny. I’ve already started book 3 and I’m looking forward to Kelley recording book 4 then I suppose I’ll be sad that’s the last book . unless the author decides we can all do with more Alexis Silver 🧜🏾♀️🧜🏾♀️🧜🏾♀️🧜🏾♀️ 4 just isn’t enough.
This is book 2 and I adored it. Between lying ex-spouses and missing adventurous Brits, we get another wild ride with Alex. I just couldn't turn off the story. Rain and Cox have another hit, with Kelley Huston giving their story a voice. All 3 did an amazing job and entertained me for many hours. My only gripe is the ending. Now I absolutely need the next book. Good job everyone on pulling me farther and farther in to this world you created. Would I listen to this book again? yes Would I recommend this book to others? absolutely. This is a great series for all ages.
This is the second in a mermaid detective series by an author I really like for her vampire detective series (vampire for hire). There is just a hint of cross-over between the two series. This one is very light in tone. The heroine Alexis doesn't get romantically involved with anyone and doesn't end up fighting demons or other terribly scary things. Just corporate jerks. And she seems to have a knack for finding missing persons. There's a little fun with the idea of aliens in this book, too. It was a light, entertaining read.
Got to love a Mermaid PI audio version I was so happy to get the second book in this series. Loved it just as much as the first. I won't give spoilers I don't like them. I'm waiting with baited breath for the third one. The narrator brings the story to life. I will definitely listen to it again. This audio book was given to me for free at my request from the publisher or author or narrator and I provided this unbiased voluntary review.
My review is based on the audiobook. This series gets better with each book. I love the female lead and the author does a fantastic job of mixing paranormal/fantasy with the modern world. The narrator is wonderful at bringing the story & characters to life. I look forward to more in this series & from this author & narrator
Deep Silver by JR Rain and Matthew S. Cox is the second book in the Alexis Silver series! I love this mermaid private eye!! Great character and the storyline is fun and easy. I get caught up in the story trying to piece together her current mystery. The inner dialog she has with her mermaid self just cracks me up. The audio narration is very well done!! I can't get enough!!
Seattle 's favorite mermaid is at it again, sleuthing, kicking butt and taking names. Alexis Silver is a full-tailed outright mermaid, who does a little humaning on the side. This tale from the tailside gives a little more to the diren side of Alexis, underwater and all. Splash on in!
I've never read anything like it. The crossing over of so many genres. I love an urban fantasy that actually has a new mythical creature besides vampires and werewolves.
I keep thinking I’m going to get bored of the series, and then I just get sucked in deeper. It’s basically the mermaid version of the Dresden files. I find it refreshing!!!
This was a great continuation of Alex Silver's life and case work. Gotta love throwing in the potential of aliens! If we can have vampires, werewolves and mermaids, why not aliens? I look forward to reading more on Silver.
