A group of teenagers must fight off an attack on their town by a secret alien invasion to save their friends and families...but they can only see the aliens if they're completely wasted!
The BURNOUTS are saving the world one puff at a time!
I was a little hesitant when I picked up this book, I'm not totally cool on the idea of teens smoking weed in high school (but whatever, its a book right?). This book starts off with a very smart kid who just wants to take a break from being so serious. He then looks to the outcasts of his high school. He tries to join them but as soon as he gives things a try, he starts to see aliens possessing the ones he cares about. Only this gang of burn outs knows about the aliens evil plan to take over the town. And honestly, whose gonna take a bunch of stoner kids seriously about this? The art is fun but I can see someone not digging it. I thought the story was pretty fun until the end. I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! Cant wait for the next arch now.
*I received this book as an eARC from Image Comics via Edelweiss. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
This is a fun book. A group of teenagers realize they can see aliens inhabiting other people's bodies when they're inebriated, either high or drunk. They take it unto themselves to take care of this unusual alien invasion. It turns out being hit really hard knocks the alien out of you and once the alien is on its own, it can be bopped out of existence easily. You can imagine what this looks like to those not in the know: drunk and high teenagers beating up strangers and shouting about aliens.
This is a colorful book that is intense and hilarious. The cow tipping is great! I'm looking forward to seeing where this series will go with the next volume. I give this first volume a 4/5.
Aliens are invading, possessing humans (and cows for some reason), and you can only see this if you're off your face. But then nobody believes you, because you have a rep for being off your face all the time. It's a solid idea, but reading this mainly made me want to rewatch The Faculty, which executed it with much more charm, vim, and satirical wit about the iniquities and inequities of US schools.
This is such a fun, crazy and entertaining series!!! I really LIKE the group of kids so much, and how they react to the new boy, and his dilemma about getting high. And the art is so incredibly beautiful, LOVE the colors and the aliens are so well drawn Really recommend this comic book if you wanna have some fun :)
This was fun. Marry the Red Scare/alien threat of the 1950s with a more modern anti-drugs sensibility, and you get the pitch of this book. Basically, a lot of aliens have possessed a lot of humans (and cows – go figure), and you can only see who and what if you're doped up on spliff. Therefore being a skunkhead rules at last, for you're the only kind of drop-out to save the world. But what if you're just a teenager with an actual, like, future, and no experience of this kind of thing, whether it be world-saving or toking? A fast-moving, intelligent, and more to the point entertaining read, with a quick and handy way of characterisation – this isn't exactly going for subtle, but like I say it had more than enough smarts for me to be entertained, and I'd certainly roll up (pun intended) for more.
"Burnouts" Volume 1 is so much more than a cute cover. Inside this unique book is a story about a young boy, Andy, and his discovery of not only weed, alcohol and teenage parties, but also of an alien invasion. One day he's a loner, then next he's pushed into the world of burnouts, socially misunderstood teens who will save the world one day.
Aliens invade a small town and the only ones that see them are a group of burnouts. To see them they have to stay high all the time. Yep, that's the basic plot and somehow it works. Also, plenty of laughs as if fitting for the topic.
The world is being invaded by body possessing aliens and the only ones who can save it are teenage burnouts… by staying wasted.
Burnouts is a colorful, quick and light-hearted read about a nerd (who isn’t just a nerd) and a group of outcasts (who are more than just outcasts) coming together to unite their bravery, rebelliousness and smarts to save the world.
There’s a little dose of trope subversion, going a little deeper than surface level which creates characters with entertaining dynamics and dilemmas. The concept is funny and intriguing with the possibility to delve into seriousness and drama.
The kids are just kids. Their only special power being that they can see alien possession when, well, not sober. All they can bring to the table is themselves which makes them pretty average kids with nothing to fall back on but each other.
The ending was a surprisingly serious revelation, making a very quick dive into serious territory.
I can’t wait to get my hands on more.
– 4/5 A quick, fun, light-hearted read where the survival of the world depends on teenage outcasts and their ability to stay wasted, brave and united.
I have received a copy of this book via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Burnouts started as a fun, colorful, and simple story, and up until the last issue, I thought it would continue on that path. Nope. Things just got serious. As I stated in my full review on sequentialplanet.com, it went from the level of E.T., your friendly extraterrestrial, to full blown xenomorph drama.
It’s not the best writing, but it’s entertaining, easy to follow, and the art is easy on the eyes.
