I can't get enough of this series. It's riveting, exciting, full or twists and surprises, and just a great read.
In this installment of the Micah Reed series, Micah has got his hands full like never before. While he and his friend, Layne Parrish, are out walking Layne's dog (Micah is supposed to dogsit for Layne while Layne goes to Lawrence, Kansas to do a security job in some dorms at the University of Kansas), three people jump out of a van and shoot Layne three times in the chest, while Micah and Eddard (the dog) go back to retrieve Micah's wallet. He'd dropped it while he was learning how to control the Bullmastiff. Layne goes down on his face and the last time Micah sees him, Layne is lying in a pool of blood.
The three people who shot him were after Eddard's dog collar, believing something was embedded in it. By now, Micah is at the scene with the dog and these people are hellbent on getting the collar. They throw Micah and the dog into the back of the van and speed off, leaving Layne for dead.
From here, Micah is on the trail of some very bad guys who seem to best him at every turn. But he wants revenge for Layne's death, as well as a few other incidents that happen as the book progresses.
There were more than a few times when I caught my breath and yelled, "No! You can't do that! No!" When you have a reaction like that, you know you are reading one good book.
As a matter of fact, this book was so good, I had it done in a day. There was never a dull moment. Something was going on all the time. At the end, I got a little choked up. *No spoilers*
I've read all of the books in this series now and they just keep getting better and better.
*I received this book as an ARC in return for an honest review
Once again Jim gives us another Micah Reed Adventure. Each one is better than the one before. An ex drug cartel gun toting enforcer, WitSec member and now a skip tracer is only the beginning of these stories. After losing a friend, the friend’s dog’s collar holds the beginning of this story. It is an amazing action filled mystery filled with engaging characters and a great story line. You should be reading all of these !
I liked this one a lot. #7 in the series sounded good, so I started there. I got a little background from the book, but not a lot of information on what Micah was up to previously, except he worked for a cartel and was in Witness Protection. I’ll be reading more in the series.
[Note: I received this book for free in return for an honest review. Fortunately, I find the book deserving of 5 stars anyway, regardless of price (not) paid.]
Micah Reed has a friend, Layne Parrish. Layne runs his own security firm and is about to go away on business for a few days. He gets Micah to look after his huge dog while he is gone and is training Micah on how to deal with his dog. Suddenly, Layne is shot point blank, lying in a puddle of his own blood while the dog is abducted.
And thus Micah is unleashed into an adventure of who would kill Layne for his dog and why.
Plot-wise, perhaps I’ve already said too much, but this is pretty much from the description on Amazon, so you have to deal. I was totally taken aback by these events, and I let the author know of my discontent in no uncertain terms.
The remaining 99% of the story is about Micah vowing vengeance for his slain friend, and investigating what about the dog is so important that it’s worth killing over. Micah, not trusting the police at all, decides to handle things on his own. Hilarity does not ensue. Hopefully, with all the danger Micah finds himself in of his own accord, he will realize he is not invincible. Sure, he can handle himself in a fight, but he was in way over his head throughout the story.
This is another excellent chapter in the ongoing saga of Micah Reed. His character has grown over the course of these books, and he grows increasingly sympathetic. Frank, Micah’s boss and friend, is used effectively but appears less than in previous installments. Even the bad guys are mostly real people.
This is a very good, fast-paced read, full of strong action interspersed with catch-your-breath moments (but not too long). Aside from my heart being ripped out at the beginning, no complaints and highly recommended.
"This couldn't be happening ... this couldn't be happening!" Micah Reed doesn't have many friends. Well, only two, actually. So when one of them is shot down in front of him when they are out together dog walking and he and the dog are kidnapped, Micah is not only angry, he is devastated and determined to find out why, by whom - and the dog!
Jim Heskett's book, seventh in the Micah Reed series ( don't worry, each one is completely stand alone) is a thoughtful, well written, exciting mystery thriller replete with interesting characters who come fully to life with their quirky, sometimes surprising, behaviour. Not saying any more - get it yourself (it's free on Kindle Unlimited). An absolutely must read
I have read the first few books in the Micah Reed stories and wanted to read more. I read this one out of sequence, but each book is a stand alone story, so I didn’t have any problems following the characters and action. In this book, Micah’s friend Layne Parrish appears and we get to know part of his back story and I like it when book series include a little new information about the main characters in each story. This book has a lot of action, a lot of shooting, and an interesting plot. It’s a well written action thriller, and the reader is able to be immersed in the story without mistakes and typos getting in the way. It’s wonderful to read an indie author who has a well edited book. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
Before I get to my overall review I just gotta say that Micah Reed has got to be one of the stupidest people ever or he cannot learn from his experiences! As many times he has been shot at or followed from/to his "secret" destinations or beaten up by bad guys he shouldn't be so surprised that they found him when he thought he was alone and okay! Having said all of that, this book moved swiftly from page one and I have zipped from page start to the end. Layne Parrish's popping up again didn't surprise me but it was unexpected. His demise early on took him out of the game, I thought. Suffice it to say I was thoroughly entertained by this book.
Heskett certainly puts the kick into asskicking! His Micah Rees stand alone/ series is one of the fast paced action packed bad good guy book sets out there. Every time I get an advanced reader copy I end up losing a day. These books are amazing. They draw you in and with the power of a rare earth magnet keep you there. And every time I finish one, I start on the cold sweats of wanting a new one now. It seems like a reading standard to say this is a must read, but you simply must read it. The shock of the title comes very early on for Micah Reed as he and his friend Layne Parrish are attacked. Micah and Layne’s pet dog are bundled into a van as Layne lies bleeding on the ground. This is another first class thrill ride of a novel in this Micah Reed series but this is almost not his story. It’s a story he’s caught up in and left alone to deal with. Jim Heskett does his usual great job delivering the action scenes and the overall story is very good too. A fun read that’s a fabulous addition to the series.
This was my least favorite Micah Reed story so far. In my opinion this was very choppy story. Shock Collar just didn't flow for me. In my opinion this felt like it was to set up the Layne Parrish Series. I maybe wrong, who knows. Somehow Micah managed to come out the other side in this one. I find it entertaining how Micah gets himself into trouble and manages to stay alive. I appreciate how Micah is trying to stay the straight and narrow with his recovery. I was entertained and will continue to read the series. I read on Kindle Unlimited.
Why was Payne killed while out walking his dog with Micah? Why were the shooters more interested in the dog's collar than the dog or Micah? What happened and why? Micah tries to find out what the hell is going on and possibly avenge - or at least bring to justice those involved in the murder/ dog napping. A terminally ill child, a call center, Tyson, strip clubs and tai kwon, murder at an AA meeting and a hacker all pepper this story to generate an intriguing tale.
Micah Reed sets out to avenge the shooting of Layne Parrish and lands in a lot of hot water. Reluctant to involve the police because of his murky past he enlists his employer Frank and a young hacker who is soon another victim of circumstance trying to decipher a USB drive which was in Layne's dog's collar (bit vague on that point) and was the whole point of his shooting by three of the most inept criminals imaginable. Story rolls along nicely, although I can't figure how he got away so many times. The book was free on Bookbub and passed a day on nicely.
I've read every one of the Micah Reed books and loved them all and they seem to be getting better. There's plenty of action but also enough plot to keep you wondering what was going to happen next. I really look forward to that email that tells me the next book is ready (I generally stop what I'm reading and go right to the Micah Reed book). Jim Heskett's books give me such enjoyment. I hope this series continue for a long time and continues to have Micah grow in each installment.
Great! About all I can say about this book is Great! Or maybe excellent, fantastic, exciting, thrilling, or just Great! This latest installment in the Micah Reed series is up to par with the others, if not better. Hate to see Layne 'go,' though. He and Micah make a great team! Can't wait for the next one! Again, I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys reading books that are Great! Jim Heskett is an author to follow!!
I skimmed the rest. I really didn’t care anymore what happened. I didn’t relate to Micah at all. The whole story was disjointed. I didn’t like it when totally innocent people were slaughtered but the hapless hero escaped. There was no reason in the story to that point that would have that make any kind of sense. None of it made sense. I’ve read other books by Heskett that I liked. This isn’t one of them.
Shock Collar (Micah Reed #7) and my twentieth read from author Jim Heskett. Reading the latest Micah Reed book is like a visit with an old friend. I read this in a matter of hours. Adding in Layne Parrish is a bonus. Great characters, great story-line. A must-read. I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Micah is dragged into a strange action because he was with Parrish at the wrong time and place. Parrish is shot, and Micah escapes with Parrish’s dog. The shooters are after the collar on Parrish’s dog. But why? Eventually Micah finds a drive with encrypted files. What do these files mean? ENJOY!
This story was a winning effort! It had everything you want in a riveting story that you couldn’t wait to turn the page and follow along to see what was around the corner. These two should team up in the future to do good things for the people who are fighting injustice!
Another great Micah Reed Mystery that’s impossible to put down. As usual he’s in trouble but this time his friends as well. Unfortunately one of them gets killed. Had to read the book ASAP to find out what happened. Love these books and the author.
This is a very good book. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Some of the action was a little far fetched and hard to imagine but fun anyway. I definitely recommend this book and the series.
Aside from all of the tired cliches, the book suffers worst from a.lack of competent editing. Full of distracting inconsistencies. But if you're seeking something to occupy the time during a bus or airline trip, it's tolerable.
His first book I've read and although I enjoyed it I have been unable to make my mind up as to how I feel towards the characters involved. The goal of the plot is quite unusual but VERY vague as regards origin
This was written in a very direct and conversational.style which I enjoy. There were no super heroes here just normal folks that can get hurt and have complicated lives. I will definitely read more from this author.
I’ve so been excited to read the next chapter in Micah’s life and it was worth the wait. The only bad part is now that I’ve read it, I have to wait for more.
While taking a walk with Layne and his dog, Micah see a van pull-up and shoot Layne 3 times in the chest. Why did that happen and how will Micah deal with the shooters? Jim Haskett has created an intriguing and conflicted character in Micah.
