Shiv Puran is one of the eighteen Puranas of Hinduism and is traditionally attributed to Ved Vyasa.
This is not just a mythological book—it goes beyond mythology. It contains stories of Shiva, Parvati, devotees, sages, and many other figures. It also explores concepts such as the soul, the afterlife, karma, heaven and hell, and the consequences of one's actions.
The book raises many questions: What is the soul? What happens after death? How should one live a righteous life? How can one attain salvation? Through its stories, it offers different perspectives rather than simple answers.
I won't say that you'll agree with every word in the book. Some ideas feel contradictory or are clearly rooted in the social norms of their time. For example, there are passages that suggest women should always follow men as their leaders. Modern readers may find such views difficult to accept, and I certainly questioned them. At the same time, the text contains many spiritual teachings that can still be meaningful today.
One of the highlights of the book is the many stories of Shiva and his unwavering compassion for his devotees. It also describes his various forms and emphasizes living a righteous life as the path to liberation.
In the end, Shiv Puran does not tell you what to believe. It encourages you to reflect, decide what values you wish to follow, and learn from its stories. Every soul has its own journey.
The two lessons that stayed with me were that true devotion comes from the heart, not from wealth or status, and that every action has consequences. Whether or not one believes every story literally, these ideas remain timeless and relevant.
One story that stayed with me is that of the hunter who spends the night waiting for his prey while sitting in a tree above a Shivling. Without realizing it, he drops leaves and water onto the Shivling throughout the night, unknowingly performing Shiva's worship. By the end of the story, Shiva accepts this act of devotion and grants him liberation.
The lesson I took from this story is that Shiva looks beyond a person's past or social status and values the purity of the heart. Even an unintentional act of devotion, when accompanied by sincerity and inner transformation, can become a path toward divine grace. It beautifully portrays Shiva as compassionate and ever willing to uplift his devotees.
Another story that deeply moved me is that of Chanchula and her husband. Because of his sinful actions, her husband is reborn as a Pishacha (a tormented spirit), suffering the consequences of his karma. Chanchula, however, repents sincerely, develops unwavering devotion to Shiva, and prays for her husband's welfare. Through her devotion and Shiva's grace, her husband is eventually freed from his miserable state and attains liberation.
The story reminded me that no one is beyond redemption. No matter how grave a person's mistakes may be, sincere repentance, devotion, and divine grace can lead to transformation and liberation. It is one of the most compassionate messages in the Shiv Puran—that hope remains even for those who have fallen the farthest.
While I didn't agree with every teaching in the Shiv Puran, especially some passages about gender roles and unquestioning obedience, I appreciated its exploration of karma, devotion, the nature of the soul, and Shiva's compassion for his devotees. I chose to read it as a spiritual and philosophical text shaped by its historical context rather than accept every statement literally.
Read Shiv Puran if you're interested in Hindu philosophy, mythology, or spirituality. Even if you don't agree with every teaching, it offers valuable insights into karma, devotion, morality, and the human journey. The stories are engaging, thought-provoking, and have shaped Indian culture and religious traditions for centuries. Got dejected and disappointed reading the book. Didn't sound like original. There had been many corruption and addition at places. I felt dissatisfied after reading this humongous volume of nothing.i need to see the original shiv puran. I do not want the next generation misled by such corruption.
