The third and final adventure in The Conscience Series
No man has loved a woman as much as Fitzwilliam “Iceman” Darcy loves his wife Elizabeth. His love is indestructible, insatiable, and his Achilles’ heel.
Since the whirlwind and dangerous adventure in Paris and Moscow in Without a Conscience, life at Pemberley has been a combination of idyllic repose and focused preparation and defense. Darcy’s enemy is still out there—a hair’s breadth from delivering revenge for his father’s assassination.
When the enemy strikes first, Iceman’s world comes crashing down kick starting a firestorm. How far will the gelid warrior go to protect all his loved ones? Just how much is the former Navy SEAL willing to sacrifice? Is his attritional warfare blind rage?—or are his extreme actions in good conscience?
This emotional, wild ride will take you on a breathless, white-knuckle international journey from heartbreak and revenge to survival and enduring bliss because …
No woman has loved a man like Elizabeth Darcy loves her husband Fitzwilliam. Her love is invulnerable, unyielding, and her strength.
Author Note: Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell wrote such wonderful characters, I borrowed their names and some of their characteristics for inspiration to tell my own tale of contemporary love. In Good Conscience - The Final Adventure is a sequel, and I recommend reading Book 1 (Denial of Conscience,) and Book 2 (Without a Conscience) beforehand. Further, it is an original story that follows the lives of the characters of the aforementioned books and therefore, not meant to be a Pride and Prejudice variation. This novel contains explicit sexual content and occasionally salty language. So if you are looking for a clean, canon read, this book is not for you.
Cat Gardiner loves romance and happy endings, history, and comedy. A member of the esteemed National League of American Pen Women, she enjoys writing across the spectrum of the romance genre from Contemporary to Chick-Lit Romantic Comedy, 20th Century Historical Fiction, and Pride and Prejudice-inspired.
Apart from her husband, her greatest passion is writing Historical Fiction, WWII-era. Her debut novel in this genre, A Moment Forever, was a 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Award Romance Finalist. "Flying with the Swallows" WWII Historical Fiction Romance released on April 2, 2024 into Kindle Unlimited. Readers can find the riveting duology on Amazon in Kindle Unlimited and paperback.
Between writing and WWII home front re-enacting, Cat takes her readers on a swell 1940s journey at The 1940s Experience blog and gallery at cgardiner1940s.com
Oh, my!! Talk about a book that's a major angst-burger!! You'll barely be able to take a breath before things explode (literally) at the beginning of this book, and the pace never lets up.
Just hang in there, folks, because the Iceman rides again, and it's one big, bumpy ride.
Diablo comes after Obsidian in a big way, particularly Liz and Darcy. When Obsidian takes up the challenge, Jane employs her "Pussy Galore" persona to assist Charles in casing out a prime target. By the end of the book, she finds herself in over her head and realizes maybe this cloak-and-dagger business isn't all fun and games. Love the little sidebars borrowing characters from other Austen stories, including Obsidian operative George Knightley flirting with dance studio secretary Fanny Price.
Lots of stuff in here requires knowledge of events from the two previous books in this series, so I wouldn't recommend reading it as a stand-alone. (But why would you do that? Why?? Get the others and read them!) This provides the reader with a brilliant conclusion to Liz and Darcy's story. And I LOVE the nod to Gaskell's North and South in the ending.
It's got thrills, romance, steam, mystery, and it packs a hell of a punch. Ms. Gardiner is a gifted writer who draws you right into her work and engages you completely. Can't praise this series enough!
I am so blown away at the evocative ending to this series. Those of us who also love North & South have a treat in the author's subtle use of names and places and even the title of a N&S variation in this tale. Then also there are those quotes from Dumas. One final one, “He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness.” says a lot about Darcy's life and now, Elizabeth's.
I have to say also that the way in which Cat wove the intrigue together with so many details needing to be written about and so as not to contradict or miss continuity has me quite amazed. She has many characters and the parts they play to keep straight as well as events from her prequels to reference in this final book. The creative way in which she leads ODC and their friends into retirement brings us full circle to the connections with the canon of P&P.
The stories do build on each other so you must read the first books. In this story, Elizabeth and Darcy have only been married coming up on one year. They talk about starting a family. But then an inferno engulfs Pemberley. Darcy had just driven away and Elizabeth was at home with plans to tend to her exercises and her orchid greenhouse!
Darcy aka Iceman knows that he has unfinished business with Sanchez-Morales, otherwise known to them as Diablo. He has the Obsidian team who are not only loyal but are also experts in their special skills: Dixon, Rick Fitzwilliam, Caroline and Charles Bingley, etc. There is Jane - skilled but also at times a hazard as she doesn't pay attention to surroundings as she should and also seems to love to flirt, even with her relationship with Charles. We again have Dave Wentworth, the Reynolds, Rick's Sarah and Mr. Bennet, a traitor in Darcy's eyes but he has a very important role in this tale.
In seeking to eliminate the man and his empire from causing any future threats to his life and to those he loves Darcy disappears and travels from one country to another always with a strict focus on his goal. Elizabeth is not there but she is in his mind, in his heart and it is for her that he is relentless in bringing down an international cartel. Can he do it alone? What is there for him when/if he meets all his goals? How will his team react to being left out of this final crusade?
I loved this story. I highly recommend it. It does have MA scenes but if you have read her other books, you know that. I have left out much of the premise because to talk about it would spoil the story. There is a lot of angst...just as in most spy thrillers. Here we also have a continuing love story.
A hauntingly beautiful requiem clashes with with a gassed up adrenaline rush toward revenge and restitution. The third and final installment was all that a grand finale should be with its lush international scenes, emotions pushed to the breaking point, sweet and sensual paired with hard-edged thriller action, loose threads tied, and a love affair that can defy even death.
In Good Conscience is the last of a series and must be read in order.
A drug lord is on the hunt to destroy Iceman one dead loved one at a time. He hits black ops company, his ancestral home, and nearly his wife before Fitzwilliam 'Iceman' Darcy goes cold and chooses to turn the tables on el jeffe. Only, the plan goes horribly wrong. Liz has his promise and his friends know who and what he is, but will it be enough when all the pieces must be glued back together. I am being purposefully vague because I think a reader will appreciate this one best knowing as little as possible about the details going in.
This book pulled out all the stops when it came to a plot that roved through sultry romance, missions, international settings, and a whole well-loved cast brought back together for one intense last ride. I enjoyed the main threads of Fitzwilliam and Liz taking turns being devastated and then on their individual missions, but there were several shiny secondary threads, too. Rick, Caroline, Charlie, Jane, Thomas, and a few other surprising new faces get their own snapshot scenes and stories. A startling reunion for Liz forces her to confront a part of her past she thought was gone even while she is left to face it alone and discover more about herself than she could possibly imagine when forced through a very dark time. I loved seeing her finish coming into her own and also seeing several others find their way as well.
I loved the blend of internal and external conflict, tones, pacing, and just that extra indefinable shine that held me rapt for over 400 pages. This series is a modern old-style spy thriller romance and tribute to Jane Austen and its characters with several other literary and cinematic Easter eggs tossed in for good measure. I think these will have a wide-appeal for people who enjoy several romance genres.
What a simply wonderful,modern,angst-filled adventure!
Join our beloved characters on an emotional and action packed physical and psychological journey,as they combat an enemy from their past and plan a future of unfettered happiness.
Liberally peppered by quotes from Dumas and the singer,Van Morrison, this tale will take your breath away!!
Highly recommended to all adults who enjoy adventure, romance and a little spice!! 😊
P.S. As an avid admirer of Gaskell's 'North and South',my heart gloried in the homage paid by Ms Gardiner, with her clever references to yet another masterpiece. No doubt, one fantastic author paying the ultimate honour to another!!
"And so it began...Diablo's hell had cometh to the Iceman." (quote from the book)
Holy Hannah this final book was intense. Nothing will prepare you for the opening Prologue. My heart was pounding and I was clenching my jaw. All I said was 'NOOooooo!' I'm sure my dentist will not be pleased!
With each chapter the tension rises and doesn't let up. I hated to put this book down when life impinged on my reading. As this is the third and final book, I don't want to provide any details that will take away from anyone's intense pleasure of reading this. Just be prepared for an emotional roller coaster of a ride in more ways than one!
This novel is gripping, gritty, steamy, sexy and downright all-consuming. The pace is fast and you'll be gasping for air. I was anxious and on edge as the story unfolded. There are beautiful and haunting 'heaven on earth' moments that will reach deep inside you and touch your heart while the tears fall. Secrets, betrayals, persuasions and deceptions are revealed that affect our characters deeply. There will be hell to pay on more than one front.
Like a tapestry, the threads from each book/novella are woven together beautifully. The circle is complete and the ending sublime...
What a wonderful end to the Conscience series. This book has so many ups and downs, it kept me on an emotional roller coaster. I loved the adventure and the romance is beyond belief. I will miss this Darcy and Elizabeth. I will be reading this trilogy whenever i feel the need for adventure and romance. Do not miss out on reading this.
What an amazing ending to the Conscience series. The other reviews do a great job of summarizing the story.
Cat Gardiner’s has a wonderful talent of story telling weaving adventure, heartache, drama, etc... It’s a page turner and you don’t want the story to end.
I highly recommend the series for P&P fans. It’s a dose of 007 meets P&P with a nod to other Austen characters as well as North & South.

SERIES: The Conscience Series

And since Diablo has vendetta against Obsidian assassin Fitzwilliam (Iceman) Darcy for killing his father, the Obsidian team knows he is coming for them. They just don’t when or how…What happens when Diablo does strike? What can Iceman do to firmly put an end to Diablo’s empire while protecting the life of the one he holds most dear…What happens if he is unsuccessful?
WHAT I LOVED:
- Brilliant Execution: Wowza…this story – no scratch that – this series is thoughtfully and expertly composed. Through all three books Cat Gardiner develops a thrilling romantic adventure full of treacherous paths, high speed action, and surprising twists. Like an expert driver handling the Tail of the Dragon, Cat Gardiner maneuvers and steers the events of this series brilliantly. I’m so impressed with the masterful orchestration behind it all. Especially in this third book – I loved the evasive narratives, the slow reveals, the tender flashbacks that fill in some missing gaps and provide some lighter moments amongst the heart-wrenching scenes of desolation.
- Traveling Everywhere: With all the books in this series, readers can experience adventure and exotic travel vicariously through Liz and Darcy. Their passports have a hefty number of stamps from the last year alone! And I so want to follow their travel routes (minus all the black ops and dangerous villains!). I want to swim in the Santorini Caldera in Greece, ride the Orient Express to Prague, see Madame Butterfly in Venice, and attempt the Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina. (It is after all the state I live in!) I truly loved these jet-setting adventures around the world!
- Character Development: In every book Cat Gardiner writes, she creates such deep-feeling and emotionally complex characters. I find these characters immeasurably absorbing and accessible. With the unexpected events that take place in this story, I think it is crucial for readers to get behind and comprehend the actions/decisions these characters make. Cat Gardiner does a marvelous job of establishing these characters’ personalities, of revealing their inner thoughts, and overall creating a bond between the readers and her characters. In so many ways I felt myself identifying with Liz in this story…I cried with her countless times and felt her pain in my heart. I addition, I could not bring myself to be upset with Darcy for even one second as I knew exactly where he was coming from and what propelled his actions.
- The Little Things: I especially loved that with such a sweeping and complex spy/thriller to create, Cat Gardiner had time to add little touches and moments with secondary characters that are such satisfying additions to the story. Such as Mr. Bennet’s role, the new character that is introduced, and all of Dixon’s moments with Liz! I have such a soft spot for Dixon!
- A Culminating Conclusion: These books truly do take readers on – not just a romantic adventure – but an emotional one as well. This last book in the series brings everything to the most satisfying and moving of conclusions. The series is encompasses such a wide range of emotions, experiences, and events and Cat Gardiner adeptly brings it all together in the end for a deeply gratifying finale.
WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:
The only thing I could possibly think of is that I was hoping to see a little more of John Knightley…but that might be because after The Iceman, he is my favorite Obsidian member. 😉
WARNING: Recommended for Mature Audiences because of the use of profanity and intimate content
CONCLUSION:
Powerful, poignant, and passionate – In Good Conscience is an exceptionally praiseworthy conclusion to The Conscience Series by Cat Gardiner. For readers who crave stories that are full of breathtaking adventure in romantic cities, thrilling danger that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the deepest, most epic of romances, I cannot recommend this series enough!!
In Good Conscience: The Final Adventure by Cat Gardiner is the final installment in this series, and while I love these characters and didn’t want to let them go, they ended up in the right place. The conclusion of their story is just what you’d expect Jane Austen to have. Iceman will always be my favorite modern Darcy, even when he’s being ice cold.
A wonderfully gripping story that keeps you turning pages without pause. Lots of love, passion, heartbreak, despair, revenge, redemption, forgiveness, and happiness. A must read!
After becoming such fans of Iceman and Liz throughout this series, this was a must read. The author does a wonderful job of keeping their relationship fresh and the adventures coming so it doesn't feel like they are rehashing the same issues, conflicts, or drama over and over again. The plot was lovely, but honestly I raced through the middle because I missed seeing our two leading folks being together. Also for fans of North and South FF, this was wonderful. I love how the author nested Margaret and John Thornton in here (along with all of their fellow characters), it was a perfect twist and perfect ending.
Books one through three are filled with excitement, intrigue, and desire.
Darcy and Liz had excellent chemistry.
I appreciate how the author incorporated character names from North and South. Usually, when authors use names from other books, I feel like an outsider, especially if I'm not familiar with the characters' personalities and backstories. However, the names from N&S are introduced in such a casual way that they don't disrupt the flow of the story.
As a side note, while Jane is the only Bennet sister, Lydia could have easily played Jane's role in this adventure.
GRIPPING Conclusion.... Third book of series. Holy moly!! How do I review this without spoilers, which I hate. Excellent final installment. When a certain event takes place, even knowing that there would be a happy ending, I sobbed with Liz. That was all so well written. Really enjoyed these Conscience books which captured me from page one of the first book. Couldn’t stop reading until I completed all the books. Sooo good. Well done!
