Riches and honour and life are the remuneration of humility and of the fear of the LORD. – Proverbs 22:4God will exalt us when the time is right. We needn't try to promote ourselves; we needn't struggle for position. Let God put us where He wants us and let us be true to God. It is better for a man to be right with God, even if he holds no great earthly position. It is honest and humble men whom God will promote, if He so desires. This study illustrates what Daniel did, and also what Daniel didn't do, which caught the attention of God and kings alike. Few are the men in history of Daniel's caliber, even though the principles he followed can be implemented by all. Are you ready to be a truly great man, one that will cause God and men to take notice?About the AuthorDwight L. Moody, determined to make a fortune, arrived in Chicago and started selling shoes. But Christ found him and his energies were redirected into full-time ministry. And what a ministry it was. Today, Moody's name still graces a church, a mission, a college, and more. Dwight Lyman Moody was a predominant evangelist, author, and publisher. Raised on a farm in Massachusetts, he moved first to Boston, where he converted to evangelical Christianity in 1856, and then to Chicago, where he prospered in business. He gave up business in 1860 and engaged in missionary work with the YMCA (1861-73).

He founded Moody Church and preached in the slums, emphasizing literal interpretation of the Bible and the need to prepare for the Second Coming. In 1870 he teamed up with the hymn writer Ira D. Sankey (1840-1908), and they began a series of highly popular revival tours in Britain and the U.S. Moody founded the Northfield School (1879), the Mount Hermon School (1881), and the Chicago Bible Institute (1889; now the Moody Bible Institute).

I am currently reading an evangelical commentary on the book of Daniel; this is very good. However, it has to address some liberal theology and criticism of the text and the literary style and authorship.
It is managing very well and increasing my knowledge and spiritual understanding like all good biblical commentaries.

But I just wanted to enjoy Daniel.

Daniel the man. Daniel the prophet.

Consider the spiritual lessons of character and faithfulness.

That is why I have quickly read Moody’s faith affirming portrait of Daniel - The man of God.

Dwight L Moody was a great American evangelist in the 19th century. The Billy Graham of his time when there was no TV or radio to help advance the gospel.

You therefore need to read this book in that context.

And in that the author was writing to a male audience addressing young men to follow in Daniel’s footsteps in the wider world of business and commerce.

The spiritual message however transcends time, gender and place. It is for all believers and produces the challenges of our walk with God, based principally on the first six chapters of this Old Testament book.

Many Christians are put off Daniel by the later chapters which touch on more prophetic events and like the book of Revelation they perhaps feel it is beyond their comprehension.

This is not an issue here. This book talks about the walk of faith Daniel had far from his country; away in exile, and trying to worship his God and remember his faith while being assimilated into a new culture and values.

So much more to learn and be blessed from here. The biblical accounts from Daniel’s life are shared. We feel we already know them but each has great value for own own relationship with God and the secular world we inhabit We face similar choices today, bowing to popularism and materialism rather than idols perhaps. While not facing death by fire or wild lions we have consequences to consider.
Moody is a gentle guide who has the heart of the evangelist pointing out Christ’s role and God’s laws. He shows the unity of the scriptures and the book is short enough to read in a day or as part of a study over a week covering the one chapter per day.
A book to inspire and challenged but which will bless you along the way.

I enjoyed this tiny book by Dwight L. Moody, a preacher during the 1800s.

I’m intrigued by Daniel. He was uprooted from his home, country, and religion as a young boy and yet he is so grounded in his faith, that even when immersed in a life of idol worship, he is still solely devoted to the one true God. This book would be a great one to go through with your kids. It’s a book to be read with your Bible open so you can consult back and forth.

*this book doesn’t include anything about the prophecies of Daniel in the last chapters.

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK
“And God will exalt us also when the right time comes. We don’t need to try to promote ourselves; we don’t need to struggle for position. Let God put us in our true places. It is better for a man to be right with God, even if he holds no position down here. Then he can look up and know that God is pleased with him. That is enough.”

“(Daniel 2:28) Daniel took his place as a nobody; he himself was nothing. He did not wish the king to think highly of him. That is the very highest type of devotion – when a man hides himself out of the way, and seeks to exalt his God and lift up his redeemer, not himself.”

“Remember, no man can be true to God and live for Him without at sometime or other being unpopular in this world. Those men who try to live for both worlds fail miserably, for at some time or other the collision is sure to come.”

“Aren’t there some of us who have so little backbone that we would have counseled these three to just bow down a little, so that no one would notice – to merely bow down, but not to worship?”

“He would rather be in the lions’ den with God than out of it without Him.”

This short book, which draws moral and ethical lessons from the first six chapters of the book of Daniel, focuses on applications rather than theology. In general, I tend to avoid books on Christian application because the conclusions drawn may represent the presuppositions of the authors as much as or more than they represent the teachings of scripture. For example, in another review, I once took a prominent Christian author to task for applications in search of a verse, and I hate having to do that. Furthermore, bad reasoning in interpreting scripture strikes me as inherently disrespectful to the God who inspired them. Fortunately, I didn’t observe any such issues in this book. That said, I was disappointed in Mr. Moody’s treatment of the interpretation of the dream statue in Daniel 2. Daniel 2:41-42 describe the feet and toes as partly of clay and partly of iron and interprets them as representing the divided nature of the fourth kingdom that has the toughness of iron. A common teaching in contemporary premillennialism is that the ten toes of the statue represent ten kingdoms that arose from the ashes of the Roman Empire. Daniel says nothing about ten toes representing kingdoms. In the parallel vision in Daniel 7, the beast representing Rome has ten horns that represent kings. So, Daniel 7 is being read into Daniel 2, and this impresses me as a cavalier way to handle divine scripture, one that I reject. In other words, with the exception of his discussion of the ten toes, Mr. Moody does a good job of drawing application out of the first half of Daniel.

Daniel was an amazing man of faith and character. This book focuses on the first 6 chapters of the book of Daniel from the Bible. It is a beautifully written book focusing on God's faithfulness and also Daniel's faithfulness.

I really love that this company is trying to get [or keep] Moody's works before the world and for the most part they are doing a good job. This book is really good and Moody's teachings are interesting, biblical and reasonable. Hence, the four stars.
What keeps it from getting 5 stars is the Bible version they have chosen to replace [unnecessarily] the one Moody used. Sometimes these interferes with Moody's outlines [especially when they are derived straight from his Bible version- I am assuming the KJV] because they change the Scripture version without altering the outline making it awkward to say the least.
Other times their preferred version is just not as clear. Case in point, Ps. 55:17, where they say it says "Evening, and morning, and at noon, I will complain and murmur, and He will hear my voice" whereas the KJV says, "Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice."
It's a really great book, well worth the read, and worthy of your time.

I love it.

Daniel is definitely my favorite of the prophetic books in the Bible. I find myself referring to it often. This book is truly messages preached about the stories found in the book by one of the greatest preachers of the 19th century. It is not a verse by verse exposition. It is a quick read, so take it a chapter at a time and enjoy it.

A man who faced world leaders without fear.

The life of Daniel is an example of a man who served God with his whole life. Because of this, God revealed to him the future of mankind here on earth.

Timeless message

This book is a wonderful classical to read that although written more than a hundred year ago still is very fresh. Every revelation and preaching or writing based on the book of life holds gems worth reading.

I’ve done a couple of in-depth studies on Daniel. I enjoyed this simple, biblically sound book on Daniel and his life. This would be great to read after reading the book of Daniel in your Bible.
I will refer to this one again. Originally published in 1884, I enjoy Dwight L Moody’s writing/teaching.

Daniel though young was already firm in his belief and trust in God. Referring to the part when he declined to eat the food offered to him because it was not what God approved for HIS people to eat.

Cold Water with a Clear Conscience is better than Wine. The Lord blessed their obedience when an obstacle came. Hearing that made me think of times when I had the opportunity to do the right thing thought by God and didn’t, some times I did and the peace I had for doing them was beyond words.
It’s not every time when you do the right thing a reward comes to you but I can say from experience that it is every time that you have HIS peace which is infinitely more valuable than what most of want.

“Daniel thought more of his Principles than he did of earthly honour or esteem of men. Right was right with him and he was going to do right that day and let the tomorrows take care of themselves.”

I so love the above quote because it shows how humble Daniel was, he wasn’t thinking that tomorrow was guaranteed for him!, he was living in the now and doing the right things now rather than saying later….
As I write this, I can’t count how many times I sin and I tell myself “next time”, a question came up to my head… “why do I believe there will be a next time?”…. This is something to ponder on and I believe it will help those of us who want to stop sinning.

A man is often lost because he does not start right.

Daniels story is quite interesting and amazing to read. His trust in God to reveal the meaning of the dream to him is truly breathtaking. After praying and asking God an answer wasn’t given, they went to sleep… I can honestly say that as I am now, I wouldn’t have slept well or at all but this just shows how much trust they had in God. It was revealed to him in a dream… mind you Daniel didn’t know it would be revealed that way… his faith and trust in God was so strong that he slept peacefully and it was revealed to him as he slept. He trusted in God and he was not let down.

It is better for a man to be right with God than to be right with anyone else. God’s way is the only way… remember that.

Daniels 3 friends lived a life that their enemies knew they wouldn’t bow, they were convinced that based of their lifestyle they would not do that…
How many of us can say we live a life where some things people can be sure we would never do?
Are we really living a life that is God’s that anyone can tell that we are different and won’t compromise to our Principles?

The words the 3 friends of Daniel stated are quite Powerful. They spoke that God could deliver them and if He chooses not to they would still worship only Him and no one else.

“Oh it does my heart good to think that the worst the devil can do is to burn off the bonds of God’s children. If Christ is with us the direst affliction can only loosen our earthly bond and set us free to soar higher.”
What a lovely quote above!!

“God will take care of us If only we would stand up for him”
This is so heartbreaking because I can’t count how many times I knew the right thing to do and chose not to… I have gotten better but there is room for growth and I pray to him to strengthen me as such opportunities come!

Take your stand with God even if it means the whole world shunning you.

What kind of testimony would people say about us? Can they say we never accepted a bribe? Never told a lie to increase our position?
A good name is better than a precious ointment!

Character is worth more than money, it is worth more than anything in the whole wide world.

Daniels Character was so known and pure that the only way his name could find fault with him was to make a case where he would have to choose between God and Man. They knew Daniel would choose God 100% and planned for that to put him trouble.

Question, can the same be said for us? Most likely no. This book has made me ask myself some key questions and make some decisions while also looking to make sure I stick by them!

Is he a Christian? Let us live a life where no one asks us that question.

A mans whose habit is to call upon God saves time rather than loses it!

Daniel would rather be in the Lions Den with God than out of it without God!

It is a thousand times to be in the Lions Den with God and hold to our principles than to be out of it and have money but no principles!

Notice how when the king heard it was Daniel, he frowned and didn’t blame Daniel but blamed himself!
He even tried to look for a way to get him out!
He could not even rest at night!
He prayed to Daniels God to please save him!
Wow, just wow!!

Whenever a man stands by God, God will stand by him!

Dwigt L. Moodyn kirjoittama teos ”Daniel, Man of God: Being a Man of Character in a Babylon World” kertoo profeetta Danielin elämänvaiheista Vanhaa testamenttia ja Danielin kirjaa kommentoiden, jolloin Nebukadnessar II vei ison joukon juutalaisia Babylonin vankeuteen.

Disclaimer: I received a PDF copy for free from the publisher in return for my honest opinion. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Daniel: Man of God by Dwight L. Moody is an Aneko Press Christian Classic published in 2018. Dwight L. Moody (1837-1899) traveled an estimated 1 million miles, preached to more than 1 million people, and had a number of works published. Daniel: Man of God, a short book of only 7 chapters, is a personal invitation into the lives of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and Nebuchadnezzar. While many people know the story of Daniel and the lions' den or of the fiery furnace, this book provides a deeper look into the entire time period in a very easy-to-read manner. It will also help modern Christians reflect upon certain circumstances – such as when Daniel and his friends refuse to eat food from the king.

Even though this book was first published in 1884, people today might still react the same way – "when in Rome, do as the Roman does" – how can Daniel expect to live according to his religion in a foreign land? Too many people would take the easy way out and this book provides a great reminder that devotion and love of the Lord is really important.

We are reminded again and again that God was with the Jews while they were in Babylon by Moody in Daniel: Man of God. An example is provided in Daniel – his faith was very strong. God is "able to deliver" the men from the extreme heat of the furnace but Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not claim that God would deliver them. In the furnace there were four men. Wonderful advice is provided by Moody – "dare to do right; dare to be true; dare to be honest" (30).

In addition to the more recognizable stories from the book of Daniel, Moody also looks at the time when Nebuchadnezzar goes mad but then regains his sanity and attains a new spirit. Just like men today, he was thinking and doing things as if his success was a result of his own power – not that of God's. We also read about Belshazzar and Darius.

Through the story of the lions' den, Moody reminds us that "the world will persecute a man if he attempts to live the life of a true Christian" (58) but Daniel was courageous and did not let vanity or warnings of persecution compromise his sense of love and duty to God.

I really enjoyed reading Daniel: Man of God by Moody. In the past, I have found reading Dwight L. Moody a little laborious but this book was very difficult to put down – I enjoyed it that much. I would recommend it to those who enjoy reading Christian classics, to those individuals who wish to know more about the book of Daniel, or those interested in reading more from Dwight L. Moody.

This is an excellent book. Very concise, yet filled with important truths demonstrating how the Christian should live a Godly life in the face of a hostile culture, using Daniel as an example.

It aims to challenge and poke that part of you that shies away from admitting you are a follower of Christ or doing/saying anything that may seem at odds with those around us.

I think Moody sums it up well with this quote 'Ah, thousands of men have been lost because of a lack of moral courage; they have been lost because at some critical moment they shrank from going to their knees and being seen and known as worshippers of God - as being on the Lord's side. The fact is that we are a pack of cowards; that is what we are. Shame on the Christians of the nineteenth century! It is a weak and sickly thing. If only we had a host of men like Daniel living today.'

Amen Moody. Amen.
This problem transcends the nineteenth century and stretches assuredly into our own. How I hope and pray to live as fearlessly as Daniel in the face of the lion's den!

I've heard many great things about the great evangelist, D.L. Moody, but I had never read anything he had written. I am glad I have changed that. This is an amazing book. Written in the late 19th century, Moody writes with a fire and passion that is sorely lacking in many a pulpit today. We need people like this in the church today. Moody goes deep into this prophetic book with the heart of an evangelist. This book reads like a preaching master class. It's phenomenal. My prayer is that I will be emboldened to preach with even more Holy Spirit anointed power having read this amazing work. I genuinely hope you read this book, but if I could give you one more incentive, Amazon has it for free! One of the best free books I have ever read.

Character matters

What a great short book. Reading the story of Daniel and his friends I realised that I was not too familiar with the stories I thought Daniel went into the den of lions first 😊 so this book really helped to put them in order
I love how it emphasis the need for having a good character. This is something that is not talked about much these days but hope that it will have a resurgence. Because character is very important if we are to live the lives Christ wants us to live.
And the story of Daniel really shows how to live as a man of great character

Excellent Points on Daniel

My husband and I read this book aloud so we could discuss the points brought out in the text. I've read through the book of Daniel several times before but Mr. Moody's observations showed me a few new points I'd missed. There were also mentions of other books and quotes I wouldn't have found on my own.
Overall, this short book was well-focused and informative, as well as easy to understand. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an example of godly manhood.

An amazing look at the Book of Daniel and his steadfast love for God.

D L Moody's love for the LORD is revealed on every page. Such an encouragement he offers to each of us as he puts his heart into every message. This is only the second book I have read of D L Moody but it won't be the last. I have several more in my library and looking forward to his encouraging words.
Never has anyone shown so much passion for the Word of God as D L Moody.

Daniel,the man of God

" Daniel, the man of God"
I read this book non stop because it is written so beautifully narrating the life of Daniel, the prophet. This book surely will help believer of Jesus to be righteous. This book is encouraging the reader to be good and faithful to God. The writer mentioned in many places about 9th century Christians, but it is true for all centuries. A must for Christians to read.

I think in this 21st century where evil has become the hallmark of the world, a book like this, will help us reshape our thoughts amidst this ongoing raging battle of the world. As Christians we are commanded to live a holy live by our Lord Jesus Christ (be ye holy for I am holy), I believe resources like this will help us to constantly remind ourselves that the world is not our home, for we are just pilgrims.

Brings the book of Daniel to life

This book takes you through the life of Daniel. It provides you with an understanding of no matter what life brings as long as you have faith in God He will bring you through. Moody breaks down the Book of Daniel in a simplified manner. Even a new born Christian could understand and apply the principles of Daniel's life to their own. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper understanding into the Book of Daniel.

Wow. This is a great book about Daniel's resilience in the face of adversity. Even though Daniel was taken away from people to Babylon where no one worshipped God, he still stayed strong in his faith and remained true to God. The author took Daniel's example and showed how we can use it in our lives today. The book is addressing young men, but anyone can read it and use to reflect on the Bible and apply it to their own lives.

I know it is a book mostly written for men but it is also interesting for us women. I had very little knowledge of Daniel and now I learned some great stuff. I loved the biography part, especially the end where the writer state that when his mortal body die, he is more alive than ever.

Short and too the point. This book was a telling of the Book of Daniel and his trials as a captive in Babylon while still retaining his faith as a man of God. Dwight Moody wad an evangelical preacher and thus the book reads like a sermon on how to be a upright worshiper of God taking clues and hints from Daniel's life. I absolutely enjoyed it and many of the similarities can still be used today.

I love every thing about this book, even though I know the story of Daniel just like most of us do. But to read about Daniel's unwavering faith again is renewing for me. This is such a perfect book for the times we are in now, and just knowing God is true to his word and Will never abandon us gives strength and hope.

A reasonably well-written exposition on the stories from the Book of Daniel. Moody often goes into his own version of stories adding unnecessary dialogue and assumptions not supported by the biblical text. While this is annoying, he never outright contradicts the scriptures.
