Ivan Friesen explores how the interpretation of the book of Isaiah is carried out and lived out today in faith communities where the Bible is the bedrock of faith and life. Such an interpretation combines the concerns of pastoral care with the distress and uncertainty of prophetic action.

The commentary groups the sixty-six chapters of Isaiah into six distinct but continuous parts. Each part may be explored as one might explore the room of a house. The furnishings (themes) in each room are different, but the decor (structure) of the house combines to lend to the book an overall unity of purpose. The architecture of the book as a whole has distinct features that include words of judgment as well as words of promise announcing a new day dawning. In this new day dawning, there are strong elements of a messianic hope.

Year B Advent takes us through Isaiah of the Exile. My very first term as a preacher began with the Year B Advent readings. I've always felt a certain fondness for these texts.

So I was very happy to see them turn up again this year. The poetry and promise of the OT lessons drew me, so we lived with the longing and the warning, the thunder and the ache of the prophets during Advent this year.

Ivan Friesen's BCBC volumen on Isaiah was a helpful resource. While his introduction and commentary were fairly run-of-the-mill, two items sets this commentary apart. First is Friesen's commitment to the text. He doesn't easily entertain emendations, often choosing to work with the hard (at times the very hard) readings represented in the MT. I don't personally have the expertise to judge whether this is always or even often a smart critical move. But I do appreciate the new vantage point this opens on the text.

The second standout feature of this commentary is a structural feature of the series. Each chapter or division of text receives reflection on how this portion relates to the rest of the canon and on how it has been used in the life of the church. I find these excurses beneficial.
