Anthony Browne, a Hans Christian Andersen Medalist, is the author-illustrator of many acclaimed books for children, including Silly Billy and Little Beauty. He lives in Kent, England.
Anthony Browne uses simple text and various design elements in How Do You Feel? A story about different emotions you may feel. Starting from the title page Browne uses size and perspective to introduce the character in the story. The character is positioned far away underneath the large size of the title. This makes the reader feel sadness from the character and disconnected. Immediately you want to start reading the story.
As you turn to the first page, you are greeted with the character again, this time much closer and on a full white page. He is staring directly at the reader and the text above him says, How do you feel? It makes the reader feel as if the character is engaging in dialogue with them. As you turn each page, you are faced with a new emotion that the character describes. When talking about feeling bored, the character is drawn in gray on the left side of the page. On the right side of the page, is a group of toys also drawn gray. Browne shows the boredom that the character feels with the toys by drawing them the same color as the character. The word bored is written bold to emphasize how the character feels.
Each page the reader discovers a new emotion that the character is going through. Browne uses color and vectors to draw attention to the images on the page. For guilty, Browne draws the character gazing up. This tries to draw attention away from the drawing the character did on the wall.
Brown uses red upfixes to show the anger the character feels when talking about feeling angry. This page is set on a black background and uses white text which draws more attention to the character and truly shows the emotion he feels.
My favorite page is feeling lonely. It is the same image from the title page. The character is drawn far away on the right side of the page with the word lonely drawn much smaller than the rest of the text. It gives readers a true sense of how the character feels when he is lonely. It is an empty and hollow feeling given from the full two page white spread brown uses.
How Do You Feel? is a great book to talk about emotions and the images really support each feeling as you read.
This is a story about a bear. The first question is 'how do you feel?', bored, lonely. The book goes through all emotions with a picture of the bear displaying each emotion. The book ends with the question stating ' how do you feel?' I thought this was a really good book for young children because it can help them understand and explore different feelings and understand that it was okay to feel this emotion. I thought that it would also be useful in the SEN ( special educational needs) context because many autistic children find it hard to express their feelings and you could use the book with them to explore how they were feeling on a particular day by getting them to pick out the picture that best represented them. This would be a useful book to have in a early years classroom or a special educational needs classroom.

How Do You Feel? is a phenomenal book to use with students ages 1 - 6 years old. The picture book is a book about feelings and different ways people express their emotions using their facial expressions. The monkey in the book shows various emotions from hunger to confidence. I love how the monkey is in different settings while showing these emotions which shows that people express their feelings in several places. I believe this book is a good tool to help students develop socio-emotional intelligence. Often times students have difficulty expressing how they feel to others, both peers and adults. Teachers and school counselors would benefit from having this book on hand whether it's in their classroom library or it's used as a read aloud. It' s a relatable book and one that attracts the eye with colorful illustrations. It's also a book I would I recommend to parents to continue the discussion at home and it's an easy read for bed time stories.
How do you feel? is a fantastic book that allows smaller children to discover, explore and discuss emotions. I have been reading this with children aged 3-4 during group and snack time in Nursery. Although the book is simple it really allows the children to discuss and understand what the vocabulary and emotion really means. They can talk about when they might experience these emotions and if they do, how it makes them feel. I believe this book gives children the opportunity to build emotional literacy. This book would also support children whose schooling may incorporate the Zones of Regulation or Emotion coaching.
Would have loved for there to be more feelings and less sensations depicted. The art could have also been exaggerated more for young readers to have an easier time identifying the emotions being portrayed.
This book talks about lots of feelings that we can have, and how sometimes we can feel one way and sometimes it might be the complete opposite feeling. This could be a good book to read to students and show them how they can tell their feelings.
This is a very good book for young children! It shows the same character with different emotions. It shows that it is okay to feel different ways about different situations.
This is a great introductory text for little kids about recognizing various emotions. The pictures clearly show each feeling and encourages kids to figure out their own.
