Rate this book
Pillar Beccon travels across Andor to discover her mother's mysterious past. But danger is never far away as a demon seeks to destroy her.

An orphaned null without a hint of magic, Pillar can't remember ever belonging anywhere, especially not in the Freemage commune where she grew up. After she graduates from high school, she jumps at the chance to learn why her mother ran away from her family.

During an accidental encounter, Grylerrque, a surviving commander from The Demon Wars, recognizes what Pillar is and decides to feed the girl's life force to her clutch. The demon sends her minions to capture the girl. Pillar escapes with a help of an unexpected allay, only to learn she was pulled out of the frying pan and thrown into the fire.

Running from Demons tells the story of Pillar's search to find a place to call her own. The book continues the chronicles of Andor, a land where the mundane world clashes with one of magic and demons from another plane prey. M. K. Theodoratus has been intrigued by fantasy since she discovered the Oz books. She has traveled through many fantasy worlds since then. When she's not reading about other writer's worlds, she's creating her own -- mostly that of the Far Isle Half-Elven where she explores the social and political influences of population genetics in a hybrid elf/human poplustion.

A sixth grade English assignment introduced her to story writing. The teacher asked for a short story. She got an incomplete, 25-page Nancy Drew pastiche which turned into a novel the next summer. Theodoratus has been addicted to writing stories ever after.

Good story, but ...

I liked the story and the main character (all the others come from three cookie cutters). I was at 66% when I realized the book had prequels, so the author succeeded in making it stand-alone. But why? For me, it only means I don’t need to read the previous books. They didn’t matter, so why should I? Versions of the phrase "the teens" are overused, and at least once, I couldn't tell which teens the author meant. Pillar is an adult. Still, it's a good story with a likable MC.

BUT, and it’s a heavy but, the book has hundreds of annoying typos, missing words, wrong words, etc. Get an editor. Or contact me, and I’ll put together a list of the problems I found.

Running from Demons is the second book in the Chronicles of Andor series by M.K Theodoratus. It is a great urban fantasy- with an action-packed coming of age adventure woven through it. There is magic, danger, demons, discovery, mayhem, drama, mystery, and much more…. This is my first read from Ms. Theodoratus, so I wasn’t entirely sure of what to expect going into the book. The blurb sounded great, and the cover is intriguing- so I took the chance to explore her world…… and now I can say that I am so glad that I did. This story is a great adventure, with interesting characters who swept me into their story and held my attention right till the very end.
We meet Pilar who hasn’t had an easy life. She is an outcast, in her society, a Null- meaning she had no magic in a society where everyone had some sort of ability. Being without her mother for so long now, and the older she gets the more questions she has. So many things she wants to know, secrets that her mother must have kept. So, when an opportunity arises to find some answers, Pilar jumps at the chance and sets off on her quest for answers. But, danger soon catches up with Pilar, and she discovers much more about her world, and herself, than she’d ever bargained for. Will she survive her encounter with demons? Will she find the answers she’s looking for?
There are a lot of characters in this story, and a lot going on- but wasn’t difficult to follow along. I will definitely be reading the third book, “Rendezvous With Demons”- I can’t wait!

Thank you, Ms. Theodoratus!

Running from Demons by M.K. Theodoratus was a action packed, thriller that had me hooked from start to finish.

My first read by this author, I didn't know what to expect. But I wasn't expecting how much I loved this book. Right out of the gate we are tossed into a deadly world. And I couldn't get enough of it.

Wow, there is so much going on in this book, and there is never a dull moment. I know you're thinking, well won't that be too confusing. No my friends it was not. The pace, thought fast, was smooth, connecting and made you feel like everything was unfolding in a natural way. The detail was heavy and rich, adding to the story, making you feel like you were there. I have to say that it got my heart going, and man oh man, was my heart was pounding.

This book has everything you want, a great MC that grows, learns and becomes better by the end. A wicket plot that is ever changing but consistent. And of course, a unique original story that just pulls you in. What else is there say other then you need this book in your life.

Overall I give this book my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval. You will get lost in this world of deadly demons, magic, and of course, be apart of the, fight for your life. Your heart will be in tatters, but at the same time you're going to be rooting for the MC, because if anything, she is worth rooting for.

Happy Reading

A great read about discovery. in a fantasy world where status is ruled by your magical abilities, Pillar has always been at the bottom of the pile. She manages as best as she can in a commune until one day her cousin demands her return. Curious for answers to her mothers past, Pillar journeys west to her kin. But demons follow her trail and there is more to her mothers story than she ever dreamed of. Will she evade the dangers and find the answers she is looking for?
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns that I just couldn't put down. Well developed characters like Pillar wanting to belong but also going after what she wants. a great example of a bildungsroman as we follow Pillars journey and development into who she needs to be. great cast of supporting characters like the strict Thelma or the kind Gracie. A brilliant villain that will send shivers up your spine.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel for example in the nature of Cascadia with its alek and crickets as wild nature that is also comforting which was beautifully written Or the city centre full of life and colour and people to add to the fast paced action of those scenes to make a captivating read. I also adored the vivid colours of the auras as bright and beautiful and the sense of smell and sounds as if you were actually there.
A brillaint example of the fantasy genre with magic that was spellbinding every time and demons straight out of the horror genre as ghastly creatures. A great example of world building in a different world with its own geography which was wonderfully written. Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.

Running from Demons by M. K. Theodoratus

Four Stars

Not knowing what you are and having no place to belong to is so scary. I felt bad for Pillar through this whole book. It sucks that people are judged by their appearance. This story was very interesting and different. I would’ve liked to know more about what Pillar is and the way that the magic works. The story was long and it was a good read. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this author. I liked that Pillar had some kind of guiding voice inside her. The author does a really good job of creating the twist and turns that the story takes. This story also dives into how inconsiderate and mean people can be. Pillar seemed to be a soft, quiet and fragile young girl. You kind of see her come into her own. But I definitely see room for growth. At some moments she reminded me of myself. When I need to be I can be present and dominate but all other times I keep to myself and just keep it moving. The demon aspect of the story was crazy. I couldn’t figure out if the demon Lord was a man or a woman because they kept saying my Lord lol. Overall I really liked how different this story was. It gave me a few laughs and I also got to dive into a new world.

This was my first time reading anything by M.K. Theodoratus and I was pretty impressed. I was in the mood for something with a paranormal twist given that it’s October and this promised some with its synopsis on Goodreads. I wasn’t as spooked as I would had hoped, but it was a really well plotted novel, with plenty of mystery and intrigue to keep one on their toes and ready for more. The details are really what make the novel though, kind of one of those where you can close your eyes and envision yourself in the room with the MC. The writing is flawless and detailed, I loved it.

Pillar Becon is a ‘null’, basically an outcast amongst others because she doesn’t’ have the magic that others around her do. This is just one layer to the story. Throw in several more like, trying to uncover her mother’s buried past, and a horrible demon named Grylerrque, and you have some pretty great reading material.

I wasn’t really aware till further along in the novel that this is actually a part two in a series, The Chronicles of Andor. It didn’t affect my ability to read this one. I do think I will go back and read the first, though. I most definitely will go on to read the third, “Rendezvous with Demons” Overall, a great four-star read that I couldn’t put down. I look forward to seeing what else is available from M.K. Theodoratus.

Running From Demons by M.K. Theodoratus
4 Stars!!!!

I have to admit that I like to find new series and new authors. This book definitely was a good find.
The author has a rather unique writing style along with a very original take on demons and witches. I found myself getting lost in this world the author created and didn't want to put the book down.

The whole story unfolds bit by bit in this book which is quite great and grabs the reader in. Pillar's
character grabs you by the heart strings from the get go and I really routed for her. As the story
unfolds you do get a sense that there are not just two factions pitted against one another but
that one of them is divided so in fact really there are three. I like the fact that there is really
a shadow over the divided group as even though two groups are pitted against the third you know that you really cannot trust the second group.

I found the chemistry between Pillar and Nate to be enticing. I found myself getting drawn into the book the more they began to interact. I really look forward to reading more from this author. I know that this is the second book so I have once again began a series out of order. I en devour to read the first and the last.

Running from Demons By M.K. Theodoratus is a fantasy/coming of age book. This is my first read by this Author and it won't be my last. I truly enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down once I got started. This is the story about Pillar Beccon. She's a young girl trying to find out more of her moms past. I found myself relating to Pillar at times. She's a stubborn yet independent and one who cares about others. Pillar is also a null or someone without magic . She doesn't always get treated the best by other people. Gryerrque is demon whom discovers pillar and what she is. Will pillar find out why her mom left her family?Does Gryerrque capture Pillar? I like this author's style of writing and ability to grab one's attention and keep it till the end. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read more from this Author.

Running From Demons
By M. K. Theodoratus
This was good fantasy read. As soon as I started reading this story I was drawn in and it hit the ground running. There was a lot going on throughout the entire story and it kept me captivated. Pillar Beccon heads out on a journey to find out about her mother's past and secrets. She does a lot of growing while on her journey and also finds herself in grave danger. There are some interesting characters that you get to meet in this book. You must read this book to find out if Pillar finds her way out of danger, and what she finds out about her mom's past and about herself. I recommend this story it is very detailed and entertaining. I felt like I was there going along this journey with her. You will not want to miss this wonderful story.

This coming of age book Running from Demons was an amazing read. M. K. Theodoratus has a gift of spinning tales that will emerge you into the story and forget about what is going on in the background. I found magic, demons, action, and new world between the covers of the book. It was enjoyable to have a variety. The story is about Pillar Beccon. She is a young girl who does not have magic and is called a “Null”. She is trying to figure out what happened to her mom. That was the wrong move because she was found before she knew what was getting into there was danger at her heels trying to stop her. Will Pillar ever figure out what is going on? I sure hope so. I cannot wait to read the third book “Rendezvous with Demons.”

Let's start with the good ... I enjoyed reading about Pillar, she was a character that I identified with and she was likeable, even in her fierce and stubborn way. The story resonated somewhat with me, living in a country rife with racism and prejudice, so the author got that aspect of her being a null and the consequences thereof on the money.

It was a good way to pass the time, being an avid reader of all genres, however, I found the story quite slow to begin with and rather disjointed - it took me a while to get into it, and I never really felt immersed in the story, the way I have managed to get with other books, as a result of this I struggled to finish it.

Running from Demons by M.K. Theodoratus is a young adult paranormal fantasy book.  There is magic and demons and creatures. M.K. paints a picture with her description of  the characters and places within their world and the attention to detail makes it easy to  read. I found it hard to get into it was a but slow for me to start and took me a while to  settle in to it. There is plenty of action, a little romance and coming of age. There is  danger and a sense of longing, of wanting to belong but always being different even in  a world that is of difference.

Running from Demons is my first book by M.K. Theodoratus, and I have to say that I quite enjoyed it.

We get to meet Pillar Beccon and her interesting journey to find more about her mother's past. I have to say that the author's ability to create a world that is interesting in it's on way. I enjoyed the character development, and was content with most of the characters.

I can't wait to read more from this author! This was a 4 Star Book!

This book was action packed with great detail. Unfortunately i didn’t read the first book
Cuz it’s not something I normally read. The author did a good job with this book. I unfortunately could not get into the book enough and found myself skimming as a I read. So I gave the book 4 stars because she was a good author from what I seen with a great eye for this genre. Which is evident in the writing. It was a good book just not something I would normally read or get into.

Running from Demons
By: M.K. Theodoratus
5 out of 5 stars

The story Running from Demons by M.K. Theodoratus is a coming of age/fantasy book. It is a wonderful story that I enjoyed reading. There is magic, demons, and action scenes. I found myself getting lost in the pages. I enjoyed reading about Pillar Beccon. Pillar is a young girl who is trying to find out more about her mother’s past. She is considered a “null” or someone without magic. Reading about how others treat Pillar when they learn this was at times sad as the attitude towards her was not always kind. I found Pillar to be stubborn and independent as well as one that cares about others. I grew to love her character with each chapter that I read. Unfortunately, there is someone who has taken an interest in Pillar. Grylerrque is a demon who has discovered Pillar and what she is. She is determined to capture Pillar and feed her life force to her clutch. As Pillar tries to learn more about her mother’s past she meets many different characters. Some are openly hostile/rude while others are kind and help her. Will Pillar learn why her mother left her family? Will Grylerrque succeed in capturing Pillar? What does the future hold for her? Read this book to find out. This is a book that does a wonderful job in world building and the description of the places that Pillar visits and stays at. The attention to detail made it so that I felt the I was right there with Pillar seeing what she does. I also felt empathy for Pillar as she doesn’t feel that she fits in. This story has many other characters that are introduced. I enjoyed reading about each one’s part in the story. This is a wonderfully written book and I would recommend reading it.

M.K. Theodoratus has a great ability for description. She really makes the reader understand the ins and outs of Running from Demons by giving such in depth descriptions.

I loved the spin that Theodoratus used in her writing. I was shocked with how much I connected to the characters.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. There is plenty going on and its a very quick yet satisfying read.

This is my 1st read and review for this author and it’s a fantastic read. Pillar is considered a null that is someone without magic, my heart went out to her because of the way that she was treated as an outcast to me she is a sassy stubborn girl with the heart of a warrior. Pillar has questions about her mother and now she has a chance to find out the answers so she leaves on a journey to find the answers, but her journey is fraught with danger and adventure and I loved it. A great Urban Fantasy and I will be looking out for more from this author, I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the free e-book to review.

I liked this, found it interesting and I liked the writers style, quite different abc I like something a bit new and a different take on things. Pillar is lost in her world and I like how the story unfolds, it isn't rushed but it isn't too slow either, we get her story bit by bit . I like the fact although this was the second in the series although I hadn't read the first I could enjoy this as a standalone. I found it a little slow to start but I won't give up on a book and it picked up, I'm glad I did. Pillar is a good likeable and emotive main character and the world building is really good. If I'm going to criticise it at all it's that some of the lesser characters weren't as padded out or likeable. I enjoyed this and would read more of the authors books .

I give Running from Demons by M. K. Theodoratus, 5 stars.

Pillar is a Null, she has no magic. She is an outcast everywhere she goes. Her mother, who passed away a long time ago, left her with so many unanswered questions. When she has a chance to travel to some of her mother's people, she decides to take the chance and travel to see them. But a teenager travelling on their own is dangerous, especially one without power. Will she learn any more about her family? Not to mention she seems to be attracting attention from some very nasty beings. What do they want with her?

This is great book! There is plenty of action, so much is going on that you will not be bored for one second. Not to mention the story of Pillar herself. She never knew her father, and she has spotty memories of her past and her mother. The growth she goes through is very rewarding. Life had never been easy for her, but it has not broken her. She has a wonderful heart too, she helps those who need it.

Since the main character just graduated high school, this would probably be considered young adult, but I am many years removed from this group and I believe this is great for all adults. I highly recommend it.

Running From Demons by M.K. Theodoratus is a great example of a fantasy coming of age story.
Pillar has never felt like she fit in. Devoid of magic she doesn’t belong to any community at all. And so the first chance she gets she sets out on her own.
Determined to find out why she was abandoned by her mother, Pillar is hoping to figure out why she is he way she is - a null. However her journey isn’t as straight forward as she planned. Running from a demon who is out to get her she escapes with some unexpected help. But has she escaped the danger? Or will she find herself involved in something worse?

This is a new author for me so I didn’t know what to expect from this book. However this one I definitely enjoyed. There are prequels but you don’t need to read them to enjoy this book. Overall the pace of the story was good. It set the scene and built up nicely. I found myself really connecting to Pillar and hoping that she would find the answers she was looking for. It was nice to read this kind of story from a different perspective - from someone who doesn’t have the power. An enjoyable book and a good start to the series.

Her attention to details made me feel as if I was Pillar and the demons were after me. I enjoyed the characters, especially Pillar. She is a great character and really she is just looking for a place to call home. She is a strong character. Will she find what she is looking for before it is too late? I highly recommend this book.

Strong Coming-of-Age Urban Fantasy | Review of ‘Running from Demons’ — Originally reviewed on Cyn's Workshop

Interesting novel. The most impressive part of the book is Pillar and the challenges she faces in her life, in the way her coming-of-age story explores identity. Pillar is a girl who is trying to find her place in a world surrounded by people with power. Everyone around her has power, but to be mundane, to be a null, especially with a mother who wasn’t, it complicates her life and, in ways, makes her an outcast. Which is unfortunate. But that’s also what makes Pillar strong. Pillar faces adversity from all around her, along with demons. Pillar is a great voice for a generation that often feels ignored. She has spent her whole life being put down only to rise in the face of adversity and challenge it, and that’s what makes her great, that challenge, that’s what makes her shine in the novel.

The added element of this hidden power she has within her, it also makes her compelling because it’s not a power she needs to define her, it’s just power she happens to have, the power that was hidden from everyone around her. And that’s great because it adds history to the novel, it adds context to the universe this story is being told in.

Now, the other characters in the novel, well the fact is that there are just too many. Some of them are great, but some of the dynamics between the characters, they don’t get to flourish as they should have. There’s just so much story crammed into this one novel that it almost feels like two novels are trying to coexist and squeeze together. Now, that’s only due to the pace of the book and the scene dynamics. There’s just so much richness in the scenes and story that once the door opens for exploration, its shut and the reader is shoved down a hall towards another door. That’s the biggest fault of the novel, this idea that so much had to be crammed into it for M.K. Theodoratus to tell this story and adventure of Pillar.

Despite that, however, the story is inventive and does provide readers a unique urban fantasy. It has a context to it and many great characters that make it a fun story. The story could have easily been 200 pages longer max, and it wouldn’t have dragged out the story. There’s just so much happening, and the level of detail makes the readers eager for something that doesn’t fully get explored. Pillar's continuously moving in the novel and so it the reader. Roots are not forming here, but that might be intentional since Pillar is searching for roots of her own, a history of her own. So on that level, the reader can truly connect to the main character in a powerful way which is what makes the story, in the end, compelling. (★★★☆☆ | B-)

This is one of those books that as I was reading, I kept comparing to today's socio-economic-political situations.

RUNNING FROM DEMONS is the first book I've read by this author and while it is the second book in a series, I did not realize it until I read the comments at the end of the book.

This book was a tale that involves lots of characters, some well developed and important - others are background players to move the story forward. It is well plotted and has a very clear beginning, middle and end. The world building was fantastic and yet it seemed so familiar. Although this book is set in a "made up" land and time, there are familiar themes to the story. For example:

"Time to go to the restrooms before the bus takes off." ... "I don't have to go." ... "Well, squeeze your drips. I'll smack you up the head if you start whining on the bus."

This book almost reads like an RPG story. It is written with such detail that I felt and the MC's were able to make decisions based on limited facts.

I am going to be adding this to my TBRA (to be read again) pile because I will revisit it when the next installment comes out.

I would recommend this to readers from YA to my mom's book club.

Not really my cup of tea. I had trouble in getting the hang of this story. There is mystery and danger at every step which sounded promising at the beginning but the plot and the action got sucked in the unnecessary details. Yes, I empathised with Pillar and her situation but those were the only feelings I had towards her. And another thing I found weird for me, I couldn't visualise Pillar at all. I tried with the cover, I tried with the way she is described in the book but I still didn't have a clear picture of her.
