A savior has come to Res Mysticum, but no one knows who it is. Doran Kane wants to be the savior, but it would help if he first knew what kind of world he lives in. Savior or not, he will soon have to figure it out. He can no longer live in comfortable ignorance in the City of Axbridge now that Rael Dagon, the cruel dictator from the City of Simbrimetus, is after him. The problem is, the world outside of Axbridge is full of magic and monsters, and it is every bit as dangerous as the city he must escape. As Doran flees into the fantastical world beyond Axbridge, his analytical mind struggles to accept the aberrations that greet him. After all, vampires are not supposed to exist, and monks may do many strange things, but Doran would have never expected them to control the elements with their minds.
Will Doran find safety amid the wild dangers of Res Mysticum, or must he remain forever a pilgrim in a treacherous and uncertain world?
I do not normally read fantasy, but Gateways to Pilgrimage was recommended by a friend. I read it in one sitting. This book is a very effective allegory that conveys a broader message while holding the readers interest without seeming preachy. This is one of those books where you want to read more about the characters. I am looking forward to reading more from Mr. Queen.
