Not So Wicked

Rate this book
In Underlayes, another dimension where all sorts of nocturnal creatures reside, lies a school in which its main purpose is to teach the younger generations how to survive amongst humans.

Like most teens, even those with supernatural powers and abilities, Elvira thinks that her days at Be Prepared High are a colossal waste of time. Especially Feeding 101, since she’s a cursed vampire that was born without fangs. She and her friends view most of the classes as useless since they never plan on venturing to the human realm. Why would they when Underlayes was made specifically for every factions’ safety, where they could roam free day or night with not a care in the worlds.

But just like her parents always told her, sometimes you’re put into situations you can’t control.
Elvira’s life takes an unexpected turn when a wizard hell bent on misplaced revenge kidnaps her and several of her friends. Not only does she send them with a one-way ticket to Detroit, Michigan, she sends them to a time when the tension amongst the races is at its highest. And having to deal with race issues is the one thing that has never even been so much as a thought to any of them and is the one course not on the roster.

But will everything they’ve learned in school be enough to keep them alive? What will they all do when racism stares them in the face? Most importantly, how will they get back home?

T. A. resides in Detroit, Michigan with her five children, and the rest of her dysfunctional family, where she was born and raised. She started her writing career in the midst of a very hard time in her life and is now a best-selling author. Her debut and award-winning novel, Witch Wars, and the world of Underlayes, was born from a mind that desperately needed an escape, so she created one.

The novel was inspired by her love of all things paranormal and how she wanted it seen. “We live in a diverse world, shouldn’t all of the characters in books, even paranormal also be diverse,” she says. “I saw so few paranormal books with a diverse cast until I read L. A. Banks. You know, with more than one or two diverse characters thrown in for good measure. Mine have it all, too.”

A mother of five beautiful children, but by far more than just that. T. A. Moorman is an artist, a violinist, a seamstress, a crafter, a writer, a blogger, a reviewer, a dark confidant and a darkly dangerous, fiercely protective friend.

This is one of the best Paranormal YA stories I have read in a long time. It had just enough mystery and suspense to keep my attention, mixed with a wonderful selections characters. There was such an eclectic mix of races among them: vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies, necromancers, and so many more.

The setting of the story took place in a school in a realm made specifically for those with magic or supernatural abilities, where it kept them protected and sheltered from the human world. The details portrayed in the writing were just enough for me to picture it all. From the classes on how to properly feed vampires to an aquatic setting for the mermaids, the author made sure to cover it all.

Elvie is fated to the mysterious Jermey and their pairing is perfection. She’s fierce, swift, and easily takes on being a leader, while Jermey’s stealth & protectiveness matches her every move. The characters in the story were good, but I didn’t feel an immediate connection or bond between them. It’s what kept me from giving five stars. I felt a little more background on the characters and how they were connected would’ve tied it all into a nice neat package. New characters were constantly introduced, but the explanation of who they were & how they fit into the story seemed vague.

I would love to read more stories from the Underlayes. My attention has been captured and my one-click finger is ready for more.

This was a great YA/ paranormal read. Based around a group of kids who enter the human world and have to find a way home from a different time. They deal with so much on their journey, you get a little mystery and suspense. With a wide variety of characters from fairies, werewolves, vampires and witches plus some more. These kids deal with topics today's youth understand. Highly recommend for a good read

Omg. I loved this book. I was hooked from page one. While the story revolves around a core group of kids, who time travels to earth against their will, we meet several other characters along the way. The story was well written and the characters was diverse and grew throughout the book. I love the dynamics between fated mates. Poor scale boy had a curse too. I would love more books in this world setting. It’s world building is original and intriguing. I want to read more about this groups lives, and the finding of fated mates for the triplets, Ro, and Narissa. I do wonder if Narissa’s pet made it over ok.

This is a unique take on a YA vampire/paranormal story. I liked the world that the supernatural creatures lived in, their unique qualities and their abilities. These qualities make this in interesting read; and I really liked the diversity of the story.

I really wanted to enjoy it this story, I really did; but it just didn't quite work for me. A lot of the story was the characters wondering around with no clear goal; there were mixed messages and too many convoluted or contradicting ideas for this story to work well for me. My three biggest issues were as follows:

One: the narration drags on and on. The characters have been sent to another time and demention but for what reason? Because a crazy witch felt like it? Why are they just wondering around Detroit? The story never explains how they are trying to get home, or what they are looking for while the are there. They are lost, then touring the city, then one of them is in trouble, then they are being sent back home. It felt like there was no direction and I could not understand the reasoning behind the story, or the purpose.

Two: There is mention in the book blurb about racial tension and how the characters come to contact with horrible examples of abuse and racial tension. While there were scenes of violence because of race, the reasoning for adding that to the story didn't add up for me either. There seemed no purpose to it (other then to be horrified by such tragic circumstances). At one point the main character explains how humans are lesser creatures, only good for feeding on; then there is even a scene with couple of supernatural people playing with a human head. How am I suppose to have sympathy for these characters, to believe they care about racial issues when human life doesn't even matter to them?! What is an internal (human) race war to outsiders who only think humans are for feeding on?

And three: there were a significant number of editing errors. I don't know if the ARC was an unedited version, if so please disregard this section. I found missing punctuation throughout the entire story; the incorrect word tense being used; slang, and a few sentences that read like the words were mixed up or out of order. While these were a lesser issue for me then the plot; they did have significant impact on my ability to fully enjoy the story.

While this review sounds largely negative, let me say that it was a good story and I think others will enjoy it. I just personally needed it cleaned up a bit more. I really think with another pass this story could be great; there is a ton of potential. I would like to read more in this world. Maybe had the story been longer (and not ended so abruptly), where everything could be addressed or fully explained, I would be giving it another star. I received an ARC via Booksprout and I am leaving my honest review.

Not So Wicked was an interesting twist on the typical YA vampire books I've read in the past. I was excited to get my hands on it and dive in, and believe me, it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.

While I think this book had some great characters and some pretty good chemistry between them, I was left wanting more. I wish there would have been more time explaining what exactly caused those characters to be sent to that specific time and place. The way things happened were just too fast for me and I would have loved to know more.

I also wanted more in regards to the race issues brought up in the synopsis.

This book caught my attention for sure and had me dying to know how things were going to work out. Plus, after reading this book I can't wait to grab the other books that take place in Underlayes. - By Alisa

This story is a part of the Underlayes Universe where the strange and not-so-normal are everyday occurrences. Where being different is accepted and welcomed. So imagine what happens when a group of supernatural teenagers are kidnapped by a revenge seeking wizard, and sent back in time to the city of Detroit, to die. To a time period when racism and police brutality ran rampant. And especially bad for the kids because of what they looked like with their mixed black and white skin tones or their Asian features. This is a good story, longer than I normally read. But I have read Tialanna's story which I liked so here I am.

Not So Wicked by T. A. Moorman is a YA story that has a wonderful Underlayes world with many unique characters. The story is basically a bunch of paranormal kids that only know one world till they are thrown into the human world and must find their way home. The writers shows us many different characters with many different skills and it was neat reading about them all. I found that the story needed a bit more of structure but the characters and all their struggles and mishaps kept it a very easy and fun book to read.

Not So Wicked: An Underlayes YA
T. A. Moorman

I thought this was great. It was a fun switch in the underlays universe. I thought it was original and fun! The wicked witch sent them back in a time they were not prepared for, and they had to figure it out. It was a shock to them, and they had to think things through. I found it funny and page turning so that I didn't want to put it down. Definitely want more.

They think most of the lesson they have are useless as they have no intention of going into the human world. What they do not know is the unexpected can happen? They may end up going See if they do and what may happen

This story is centered around 2 teenage vampires who are abnormal even for them. It follows them through adventures and hijinks. High school is never normal and these teens know that first hand. Loved getting to know the characters. The writing was a bit messy for me but it was a super fun and original read.

Elvira feels like she doesn’t need an education at Be Prepared High, she is a cursed vampire. An original concept on a fangless vampire. Suddenly her and her friends are sent to a time and place where they do not belong. They have to deal with issues such as racism, which was never even taught at their school.

This book snatched my soul at times. I was actually scared for the characters at times. I had to put down the book and walk away because I feared for them. With each turn of the page, I was scared to death that something bad was going to happen.

I thought the storyline was perfectly written. Kudos to the author for putting a unique spin on real world situations. I cannot wait to read more from her. The character development was on point, the plot line was incredible. I will be recommending this book to others.
