The trials, tribulations, and debauchery of the fictional 1980s rock band Intemperance. A hilarious and sometimes frightening look at the day to day lives of a suburban garage band as they rise from the small city club scene to national fame. There is plenty of sex, drugs, and rock and roll to go around, but fame comes at a high price as ruthless record company executives work at every turn to control them and exploit their names while they try to remain true to their music. A well researched look at the realities of popular music and the record industry in the late twentieth century.
Steiner takes you on a journey through the height of the Heavy Metal domination of the music industry and into the more modern rock era, following what the music industry thought was it's last days as the industry saw massive changed to the way it treated artists, the way it made money, and the false theories they had about the music-buying public in general.
We follow all of this by following one young man on his journey from relative obscurity to super-stardom as a rock icon. We follow Jake Kingsley, the Lead Singer and Rythm Guitarist for the band, Intemperance, as they live up to their name as new raunchy heavy metal artists, we follow the exploits drugs, sex, and especially rock and roll. And through it all, the reader gets to live out their rock star fantasies through this fictional rock opus.
Alan Steiner manages to deliver a hot smut book about the guys in a rock band that's also a mostly decent read. You can tell it's an indie effort because there are lines that would clearly have profited from an editor's oversight - stuff like confusing premier/premiere, principal/principle or his weird fascination with the word "imbibe" - please forgive me for nitpicking, but those lines stick out like sore thumbs. And yet he manages to keep my interest in his characters beyond their exchanges of bodily fluids with members of the opposite sex. I'm looking forward to read more about Intemperance.
This is the first book in one of my favorite series to date. I haven’t read book 7 yet but so far the series is excellent. This book start with the band coming together and taking off. It has great characters and a phenomenal story line of their rise and how the record industry takes advantage of the talent. The best thing is the series doesn’t just get bigger for bigger sake as it goes on. I can’t recommend this enough.
I found this book on SOL and added it to my Kindle.
It's brilliant - very raunchy in places - but the characterization is incredible. You feel and care for the characters, and live their excesses. Wonderfully researched text.
