Bodyguard.

Mercenary.

Gun for hire.

I didn’t care what you called it, the end result was always the same.

You paid me for a job, you got results. The Marines trained me to shoot, but life taught me to aim. Working for the best personal security firm in the business was a stepping stone. Put in my time, build the résumé, then move on. I didn’t do attachments, on any level.

Until a smoking-hot former one-night stand crossed the street in front of me, holding a kid who was my spitting image. She tried to play it off, deny he was mine. She said she didn’t remember me, right before she turned around and ran. She thought she’d made a clean escape.

But she was about to find out how merciless a bodyguard could be.

"There's more than chemistry here. I know it."
As always, Ms. Bartel delivers! I've really come to love the world she's created for her ex-Marines, many of whom make cameos in this book. Spending time with these guys is such a pleasure.

Plot in a nutshell: Brooke made a lot of bad choices when she was a teenager. Years later, she's doing her best to escape her past when she meets Garrett, a jaded Marine who's almost finished his third tour.

Though he knows she's trouble, Garrett can't seem to resist wanting to know more about her.
I didn't know if she was eighteen or thirty. Her face was young, but her eyes were old. [...] She was captivating - a gorgeous, beautiful, mind fuck of incongruity.
GAH! Merciless had everything I've come to love about this author's work: a fast-paced plot, a tortured ALPHA, a strong, yet vulnerable heroine, a nice tug at my heartstrings, and SCORCHINGLY HOT SEX.

If, like me, you love a good trashy romance, I can't recommend this author enough!
"What happened to the woman who didn't like people getting near her?"

Strong and bold, she held my gaze. "She hadn't met you."

Hmm..

I actually enjoyed this book.. it was fast paced, had some good dialog, I liked the interaction between the two lead characters and that's about it.

Do I actually believe this is a great book and would I recommend it indiscriminately? No.

Just to be clear, I could nitpick or simply point out what this book does wrong but tbh I don't feel like it because in the end it didn't matter. Sometimes I read books and I can't shut up about the stuff that bothered me but in this case I feel like my overall enjoyment kinda trumps anything else.

Oh and I've got to mention that this hero is such a unicorn. He sees the heroine, likes her, becomes slightly obsessed with her and stays celibate for like 3 years while trying to look for her. I mean..
To top all that, the heroine is kinda more badass than him (him being some badass Marine/Mercenary Bodyguard) - at least she is imho :D
All I’m saying is .. I was sold ;)

This is an author I will check out more of whenever I'm stuck and need a change, cause I feel like she can write some good action into her romances (good as in not OTT and short enough to not bore me to death).

If you love to read about real alpha men, you gotta read Sybil Bartel's books. Holy moly, does she really know how to bring us a hero who what I call a manly man. These men are pure Alpha. They are military trained. They are deadly. The best part, they are true protectors and so, so good to their women.

Collin is everything I mentioned above and more. Every time I read one of Bartel's books, I gotta make room for a new favorite. I love that she also brings back past heroes to make an appearance in each new book. I'm reminded to why I love all these men. They all create the odd family that I wish I can be a part of.

I started out not knowing how I feel about Brookelyn. She seemed too stubborn at first, but the more I read and learned about her situation, the more I felt compassion for her. I couldn't wait for Collins to come in and rescue her cause I knew he would.

Merciless gave me the Alpha fix I needed but I can't wait for the next book. I'm greedy like that.

Another wonderful alpha male dominated drama, this time Collins and Brookelyn are the chemistry makers.
The characters are great and the storyline is tense, very enjoyable and satisfying to read.
Steamy passionate romance packed with great alpha security moments, plots and plans, and some favourite characters are around too.

I Give Up

2 Stars

DNF chapter 17 - 40%

I hate stories that start in the present then jump in the past. And especially when they stay in the past for nearly half the book.
At 40%we are still on the first day they met.
Add to that the FMC is annoying. And a whole lot of TSTL.

I give up. This book is not for me

3.5 'You're my home' stars!

So far this has been my least favourite of Sybil's books that I've read. That doesn't mean that I still didn't enjoy it and gobble it down in one sitting.

Brookelyn is trapped in a life that she can't escape when she first meets Garrett. I kept wanting her to just tell the truth, to let down her guard and trust Garrett, to let him take care of her. But, like most things in life, it never goes how you want it to.

And because life was cruel no matter how you played it, I allowed myself to kiss him back. For one mind-altering moment, I allowed myself to feel the kind of gentle I didn't have. The kind of man I'd never have.

I loved Garrett and his strong sense of honour and his undying affection for Brookelyn...I mean, the man looked high and low and waited 3 years for her.

"I looked for you for a year."
"Why?" Her voice caught.
I took her hand and brought it to my chest. "Because you walked into my life and stole my fucking heart."

This was a quick and easy read that had plenty of angst, instant love, revenge and action.

Another 5 Star read from this amazing author! Her alpha men are just delicious, and I need more! This book so SOOOO good, I dived right into it even before I read the burb. This book has a whole lot of action, and is definitely a very intriguing read.

Collins is ex military. He is rough, tough, and in my eyes he is an absolute sweetheart! His back story isn’t a terribly happy one. Collins is an alpha just like the rest of his security workmates.
Brookelyn has secrets, secrets that could get her into a lot of trouble. She is trapped with no way out. Brookelyn is very timid. She has had a horrible few years and Collins is her breath of fresh air. Can they be happy?

I definitely could not put this book down. It was action packed, and a really enjoyable read. I loved seeing all the past characters show up to help out. I really like when there is an interconnected standalone. There are steamy scenes and some insta love, but it all pulled together really well. The story flowed nicely and I was never bored. I can’t wait to read more from this series!

”I was wrong before, she didn’t smell like woman and spice and laundry. She smelled like everything I’d ever wanted.”

This was a well written romance but it just wasn’t my type of story. I normally wouldn’t have picked this up after reading the blurb but some things said in a review made me go against my instincts.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad book it’s just not my style. I can’t seem appreciate books where the two MCs are kept apart for years and then there’s a secret baby and the man is super made about it. I don’t blame him but the whole thing doesn’t give me the warm fuzzies. If you’re interested in this kind of tale you can check out my highlights for some excerpts from this book.

3.75 stars. I love Sybil Bartel and this is the first book of hers I've read in her Alpha Bodyguard series. I didn't like it as much as her others, mostly because the heroine kind of annoyed me. I feel like with Bartel, we a lot of times get these heroines who are in these super bad situations (usually involving an ex or current boyfriend) and I find that annoying, with the constant damsel-in-distress trope, especially since it usually involves the heroine also hiding things that then lead to miscommunication or issues with the hero.

I loved Collins—such a delicious hero—but Brooke/Brookelyn annoyed the hell out of me, due to the aforementioned issues. Collins deserved SO much more; totally put himself out there, lay his heart on the ground, and she just repeatedly stomps on it. But he's amazing, so he never gives up.

Be aware that this (and all of Bartel's books) are insta-lust and insta-love books, which normally NEVER works for me, but Bartel seems to be the exception lol.

Reread 02/05/25 - 3 stars

This was one of the first books by Sybil Bartel I read more than 4 years ago. I wasn't used to her writing style back then but it eventually grew on me. Her ability to express intense feelings and emotions in a few short sentences was impressive. I loved that her characters swore in their head and out loud; that's how normal people talk. I have read almost every book Bartel has written and while I haven't loved them all, she's always been a comfort read for me. Unfortunately for my to-do list, once I start rereading her old books, it never stops at one. For example, I started with Fearless this time and went on to reread Ruthless, Reckless, Merciless, and Neil. All in 3 days.

As for the review for Merciless, I gave it 2 stars on my first read. I can bump it to 3 stars now, not because the story isn't good. I wanted Garrett and Brooke to have more time together as a family. But that's Sybil Bartel for you: there's always something happening with no real time for us to see the leads settle down. I wish Brooke had confided in Garrett, but I also understood where she was coming from. She had been abused physically and emotionally by the last person she thought loved her. However, I loved the fact that both were celibate during their 3 years apart. How rare.

No matter my complaints, I'm sure I'll be back to read this one in a few months. Off to dive into Shameless...

If you're into a fast paced romance with an alpha male who has excellent bedroom skills, then look no further because this is the book for you. I've been waiting to continue reading this series for a long time now - ever since I finished reading the first book. Imo, this series is one of the best to get anyone out of their reading slump/when they're not really feeling it. Full of plenty of action and smut, this was an overall good read for me and I look forward to reading the next books in the Alpha Bodyguard series :))

Heroine was a strong woman and she suffered alot but Dear god.. the bad decisions she took.
From the beginning itself it was clear that hero was smitten and would’ve done anything for her but still she hid everything from him and lied to him many many times. Now I understand she had trust issues but still she could see he was a gentleman and still kinda betrayed him.
Loved how his teammates came for his help and also the colorful secondary characters.

Safe as both were celibate during 3 years of separation.
Recommended.

For me this has been a fab introduction to the work of Sybil Bartel.

The chemistry/heat between Collin and Brookelyn was written and teased out wonderfully.

A strong alpha male who doesn't cross the line into being an ass - perfect. Add in a resilient sassy heroine, action, and a story that flows well and you have yourself a hot engaging read.

Another hot bodyguard!

I am loving this series!!
The bodyguards are all perfectly hot and heroic. The stories are unique enough to really keep the suspense going. The military expertise is on display more in this part more so than in book 1 of the series.

3 stars. The heroine was godawful and annoying as all get out. Every answer was a question and she was so scared at the time and has been abused for years but then has a one night stand that magically makes them both fall in love? Ummm no.

I have never come across another romance author who can create alphas quite as well as this one. Her alphas are hot, unrelenting, bossy and dominating. I found Collins to be a little softer around the edges than his fellow bodyguards, but that made him all the more endearing.

The story starts three years ago. Collins is back in Miami for twenty-four hours to see his ailing mother and he drops in to see a friend, Dax Tyler, (the brother of the Tyler who stars in the next book, Reckless) at his bar. It’s there he meets Brookelynn, a homeless, bruised young woman who Dax found going through his garbage. He gave her a job and some food, but she doesn’t talk much.

Collins finds himself intrigued by the woman, and when they hear a loud crash out back, they race out to find her surrounded by shattered glass and injured. It’s clear that she’s being abused by someone, but Brookelynn refuses to tell him anything. Despite the fact he’s about to be shipped out again, he follows her after she leaves the bar and sees she’s staying in some seedy motel and using a rusty bike to get around.

He eventually coaxes her into coming to his condo for a meal, and they end up in bed together. Collins will only be gone for another three months, so he offers her his condo and asks her to stay. To wait for him. However, during the night, the man Brookelynn was running from shows up at Collins’s condo, and Brookelynn feels she has no choice but to go with the man she’s been trying to escape for years – but not after taking the keys to Collins’s car.

Collins is determined to find Brookelynn, and he spends the next year looking. Not even Andre Luna can locate her. She’s a ghost. He tries to forget her, but can’t. Three years later, Collins has left the Marines and is working for Andre in Miami. He’s on assignment one day when he literally walks straight past her – and this time, she’s not alone. She has a small child with her. A child who looks exactly like Collins did at the same age.

Now that Collins has found Brookelynn again, he’s not going to let her go – especially now he knows they have a son. He manages to find out Brookelynn has been living with a man who is known for money laundering for a powerful cartel, and this is the man she was running from when he first met her. Getting her away from Nathan Lewis isn’t going to be easy, but Collins isn’t going to leave his son and the woman he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about for three years in harm’s way. Oh, he’s plenty annoyed with her, but when he realises the situation she and their son are in, he knows he has to get her out.

With the help of the always cheerful and flirty Talon, the gorgeously dominant Neil, and a few other familiar faces, Collins manages to extract Brookelynn and their boy safely – but not before he is mortally shot. Once he recovers from his injuries, he stays with them in a safe house where he and Brookelynn must decide if they have something between them worth fighting for.

This book has all the hallmarks of Sybil’s delicious writing – hot bodyguards, strong women, incredibly hot sex scenes, and two characters who have a connection that runs deep. Another fantastic book.

This was such a good book! I loved seeing characters from this author's other novels coming together to help out a fellow comrade. I like seeing the family dynamic all these grown men have with men they served with in the military.

I adore Collins. He's a perfect balance of the so-called "alpha" trope and being a respectful human being. He doesn't cross the line from "alpha" into jack*ss, which I am eternally grateful to the author for. I liked how he pushed when something was dire but respected her wishes to not talk about something when it was irrelevant to any situation.

Brooke rubbed me to wrong way in so many instances throughout this novel. I understand the abuse victim mentality and it was portrayed well in this novel (as far as I can tell) but boy! was is annoying to have to read through it. I can respect someone running away after being offered help from a complete stranger who happens to be a huge muscled man who kind-of-but-not-really stalks you after the person you're truly running away from finds you. I know I'm asking too much but half the story wouldn't have had to happen had she accepted/asked for help from the beginning.

The ending was what I was expecting with a few twists that I didn't see coming. I liked how things got resolved. I liked seeing both Collins and Brooke happy for once. I loved seeing Neil from a different perspective. I can't wait to see what the next story in this series is going to be!

My Favorite Quotes:

"Make peace or die. [...] Fear serves a purpose. Panic doesn't."

"This isn't an obligation, duty or pity. You don't get to glorify what I am."

"If you're in trouble, I'm always an option for you."

Great book.

This is a fast paced, yet full of emotions romance story featuring Garrett and Brookelyn.

Brooke is running for her life when she first meets Garrett. Even being scared around any other person, she feels safe enough around him to let her guard down.
He's patient, full on protective alpha mode, but also caring and respectful.
Their encounter may have beem brief, but it was enough to change their feelings and both their lives completely.

So many things go wrong, though, and they only meet each other again a couple of years later, when Brooke is in even more danger than before. Only now, she's not in danger alone.

There were fear, a sense of betrayal and dispair, but also hope, love and willingness to fight for their feelings and for what they could become.
The years apart and the dire circumstances they were facing could never compete with their growing and all-consuming feelings.
They should be a family and they fought hard to earn it.

I loved it.

Holy hotness, she’s done it again.

Sybil Bartel’s, Merciless (The Alpha Bodyguard Series) is everything a reader wants in a book. There’s an alpha af hero, resilient, sassy heroine, jam-packed action scenes, and smokin’ hot sex. Heck, your heartrate will double, possibly triple, in some parts of this well-crafted novel.

Well-crafted.

Yep, those two words are synonymous with Bartel’s work. In fact, they represent what I love most about her writing. Sybil is a master at three-dimensional character building, at slowly teasing out their truth, one multi-layered line of dialogue at a time. It’s also in the way she structures her stories, paces the action, and builds the tension that ensures the reader is in for one hell of a ride when they open the book.

Read it. You can thank me later.

So, I'm not super happy with the precis of this book. From the description, I thought this was going to be a cute little secret baby romance where the heroine gets pregnant from a one-night stand and gets nervous about telling the hot alpha military guy what happened.

description

What really happens is that our dude Garrett is on leave for a day and falls into crazy insta-love for a chick with a hidden identity who's scared of everything and pretty much treats him like garbage and won't tell him she's basically being held hostage by America's biggest money launderer because.....reasons?....., and then three years after she sneaks out of his condo in the middle of the night, he runs into her with a kid that is his spitting image.

Honestly, I really super hated the beginning of this book. The insta-love was off the charts crazy. Like, seriously, you'll let someone you've known for three hours and won't give you her real name have free access to your condo while you finish up your tour in Afghanistan?

description

And Brooke is terrified of Nathan (the baddie), got cut up by him the last time he caught her escaping from him and he just found her again that day, but she won't tell the big, bad Marine she's with what's happening?

description

It's just ludicrous.

However, despite the rocky start, the middle of the book is actually really good. When Garrett runs into Brooke on the street with little Maverick, he immediately follows her and finds out about Nathan, the cartel money launderer. Although, it takes him a while to realize that Brooke is all victim in this, he gets all his private security, ex-military buddies to rescue her and their son. There's a lot of great action and suspense here. And tons of great other characters that I look forward to reading about.

Unfortunately, the ending goes back to kind of cheesy, insta-love with no actual relationship building at all.

I'd say it's a pretty good action/suspense story, but not really that great of a romance. It was a pretty quick read, and the middle section made the rest of the book worthwhile for me. I wouldn't read this one again, but there was enough good stuff to make me want to read other books in the series.

That cover is five star, though! Rawr!

Sybil Bartel was new to me author until a few months ago when someone recommended her books and I got hooked since then. I love how she manages to describe every character to their souls, the very alpha marines with the biggest heart that falls for sassy heroines.
Although my favourite is Neil, aka the Viking, Garrett comes very close to replace Neil in my list and that’s a huge thing. He is everything i love about a hero. Even after 3 years he still thinks of that night with her and wants her more than anything now that he finds out he has a son with her. Brooklyn is the perfect heroine for him, with all her past mistakes and everything else that’s going on, she is a great mother and would do anything for her son but also will never forget Garrett.
I laughed out loud at some point, especially when some of the previous characters in Sybil’s books are showing their support as a true friend and I am happy that we could learn about them more.
Never disappointed by this author.
Can’t wait for more ❤️

Amazing, gripping, gut wrenching, funny, sweet, sexy, heart warming and so many more things is what this book was. I didn’t want to put it down and I didn’t want it to end. The characters are spectacular and the story so fabulously written. The chemistry between these two shines through on every page they are and add in the little surprise that sweetens the whole deal and oh my, you have something truly special. Along with them are friends from the past and it’s always so dang awesome seeing them come to help, the friendships and commitment to one another to be there for each other. This story is a true test that when you wait, what’s meant to be will find you again and love is forgiving. I loved the book and it’s a must read for sure.

We are introduced to Collins (a Marine) home from Afganistan for only hours to attend to a family emergency. Exhausted mentally & locked up emotionally, Collins spares a few hours to visit his friend's bar to talk, drink & maybe pick up a woman for the night. It's there he meets Brookelyn, timid, haunted & terrified of people: male or female.
Collins finds Brookelyn pulls at him as no other woman has, her beauty yes, but it is more the expression in her eyes that calls to him like a Siren.
Despite her best efforts, she ends up at Collin's oceanview condo & ends up allowing herself to have a few hours of pleasure for herself with the military male who in spite of his commanding dominance, his massive size & rugged looks makes her feel safe, wanted & treasured.
And Collins a taciturn & an emotional wasteland unaccountably finds himself trying to entice Brookelyn to wait for him for 3 months when his current tour of duty is completed.
But Brookelyn is hiding a dark past that is still grimly part of her present. And terrified it will drag Collins down, she flees the condo before the dawn.
The first half of the book takes place over the course of a few hours, I did think it went on a little longer than I would have preferred but it sets the tone for how impacted Collins is by Brookelyn's disappearance & why he feels & acts the way he does in the 2nd part of the book & why Brookelyn left the way she did.
However, the action & tension explodes in the 2nd half: Andre, Sawyer, Talon, Dane, as well as Neil (it is funny how Neil scares even Collins) all make appearances to help Collins in his laser focused goal.
But Brookelyn ripped Collins' heart with her betrayal & her deception & now Collins must decide if he'll save her, unaware of the hell she's actually in.
The author does an excellent job with her characters, we get both Collins & Brookelyn's POV throughout the story & her action & covert mission scenes are some of the best I've read.
I was very much interested in both Collins & Brookelyn, rooting for them to overcome their pasts & heartache, to have a HEA together. But first Collins must decide if Brookelyn is worthy to be saved & even Andre Luna admits the enemy they must overcome is beyond Luna & Associates abilities to take down.
A rousing read with an stellar cast.

MERCILESS (Alpha Bodyguard #2)
Before I get started, I've decided to read all books in this series! It's hard to do; I've also been reading "The Alpha Elite" series, too! I can't get enough! 😉
Having said that, I was looking forward to 'Merciless', having read 'Shameless', (I was still cooling off from THAT one!).
I true Sybil Bartel style, 'Merciless' has it all: Alpha bodyguard, Garrett Collins - former Marine, and his challenge, Brookelyn (Barrone).
I love a man in uniform....and sexy, gorgeously built Garrett fills my dreams....and alpha to boot! He stumbles across a beautiful but frightened woman in a friend's bar. He makes his first 'rescue' of her while she is in the back of the bar; a huge crash and a fleeing stranger has Garrett hooked. Who is she? Why is she afraid of people being near her? Who was that running out of the back of the bar?
The story unfolds as Garrett learns her name, "Brookelyn", and that's all! I found myself thinking, "OMG, Brookelyn! This guy wants to help! An ex-Marine, who's drop-dead HOT??!! Just go for it!" I was a little miffed that she refused him!
Then I read further, and my heart went out to her. She really was a strong, independent survivor of a situation where she was trapped into money-laundering for a creepy, disgusting man, holding her future in his hands.
All throughout the story, there is fast-paced action, along action, questionable decisions and of course, lots...and I mean LOTS...of steamy narrative and hot, hot, hot sex!
I might have said too much about the situation that eventually brings Garrett and Brookelyn together - along with a new chapter added to both their lives - sorry!! It's such a great story of falling in love, a barrage of rescue efforts and having a little, or a lot of help from Garrett's buddies.
I must admit that when I began "Merciless", I wasn't immediately convinced of a story like "Shameless", (my apologies to Sybil Bartel). What's the saying, 'oh ye of little faith'! By chapter 3, I was hooked and read through the night. Loved it! I should remember that each story is a standalone; I get my alpha fix and applaud how it all comes together throughout the book! Oh...and yes...if I didn't think I'd like it, well...why did I stay up all night to read it??!!
A beautiful 5🌟 story!
