Having read a non-fiction book (of service in Northern Ireland) by this author I know something of his background which I believe throws more light on this collection than any introduction could. These verses are more catharsis than creative, which is an observation, not a criticism. In my opinion, it would make a fine keepsake for a relative or friend. Therein lies what some might think is a negative aspect—it is so personal. Not many people are capable of opening up in such a way. I’m not a poetry purist, but I am not a fan of free-verse, so I liked the content more than the delivery. This is a personal point of view, but like the poetry itself, isn’t that the point? We have here a book which lives up to its title, and you see the author through his work. I was given a copy of the paperback version for my collection.
