Sentado en el balcón del sanatorio y envuelto en una manta, Hans reflexiona acerca de la vida, la muerte y el amor. El resultado es una de las grandes obras maestras de la literatura universal, que ofrece un retrato de la Europa de principios del siglo XX al mismo tiempo que hace una profunda reflexión acerca de la condición humana.

Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and Nobel Prize laureate in 1929, known for his series of highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas, noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized German and Biblical stories, as well as the ideas of Goethe, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer. His older brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann, and three of his six children, Erika Mann, Klaus Mann and Golo Mann, also became important German writers. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Mann fled to Switzerland. When World War II broke out in 1939, he emigrated to the United States, from where he returned to Switzerland in 1952. Thomas Mann is one of the best-known exponents of the so-called Exilliteratur.

El tiempo se ha detenido en un sanatorio para tuberculosos en el corazón de los Alpes suizos. Hans Castorp visita a su primo Joachim sin adivinar que su estancia va a ser algo más prolongada de lo esperado. Multitud de interesantes personajes conviven en este mágico lugar, lo que dará oportunidad para tratar temas como el amor, la guerra, la filosofía y la política.

Raske on "Võlumäge" lühidalt kokku võtta. Selleks on ta liiga tihke ja tummine. Lihtsustades on tegemist romaaniga ajast ja maailmasõja eelsest Euroopast, aga see ei ütle ka päris kõike ära. Toeka 800 lehe hulka pikib Mann veel hulganiselt muid mõtisklusi, mis käsitlevad nii surma kui ka elu, armastust ja üksildust.

Selle kõige seedimine oli paras väljakutse, kuna tempo oli kohati pea olematu ja lõputud kirjeldused sanatooriumist ja nende elanikest ähvardasid hinge matta. Pärast esimese köite lõpetamist liikusin teise kallale pigem tahtejõu najal, aga pärast raamatu sulgemist valdas mind küll ebamäärane rahulolu, mis andis tunnistust tõsiasjast, et lugemisele kulunud aeg polnud mitte raisku läinud.

Nõnda sai teine köide ka kõrgema hinnangu, kuna viimase saja lehe jooksul hakkasid asjad paika loksuma ja teose geniaalsus hakkas vaikselt välja immitsema. Retrospektiivselt kerkis selle läbi ka esimese köite hinnang ja kokkuvõttes võis loetuga rahule jääda küll. Soovitada julgen siiski vaid nendele, kellel on üle nii aega kui ka kannatust.

A esta novela de Thomas Mann le dediqué un podcast completo no hace mucho tiempo (a esta edición en particular, de dos volúmenes). Aquí describo lo que aprecié del libro y lo que no. Mi conclusión es que si hubiera tenido 300 páginas en total habría sido perfecto.
