She's city. The more designer and fluffier, the better.
He's a closed-off butcher in a small northern Canadian town.

Emily Gates is hip. If a bag's got more than three zeros in its price tag - she's in. Cream is her favorite color. And her new role as junior city planner in the city of Toronto has her excited beyond all reason. For the gal with the troubled past - something she carefully keeps a secret -  it's all about building community now. Even though she loves working and living in the upscale, trendy area just east of Bloor and Yonge.

Rufus Richardson isn't fancy and his job is dirty. And he's always trying to slay the damn dragons, even when no one wants him to. He should settle for a local gal, one who's used to country and mosquitos and wild animals poking around the family homestead. Instead, the moment he sees the vivacious city beauty, his heart tumbles, and his warrior's sword appears. But she doesn't need him to slay any dragons, and tells him so.

But when the life she's carefully curated falls apart suddenly and she goes off into the dark northern night alone searching for the meaning that's always eluded her, they find themselves thrown together, the night before Christmas Eve. On Ruf's annual, infamous northern Candy Cane Run, and...

Everything changes.

And this Christmas, it all started with a candy cane.

Oh, I love candy canes. Though I try to stay away during the year, I do indulge during Christmas. Well, when it comes to “It Started With a Candy Cane”, you should devour it any time you crave something sweet and romantic. I was quickly swooning over Rufus. You know the old: “My hero” saying? Yup, that was me with this book.

Rufus and Emily cannot be more different. She is a city girl while he enjoys the quiet life of a small town. But they need each other. Emily is the type of woman that can hold her head high, with all the ugly issues life may throw at her. Rufus is the one willing to catch all these nasty things. Their relationship is beautiful and they form an amazing couple.

I got into this book faster than in case of “Real Miracle”. It was not that moody. I loved every page and I hope you will give it a shot as well 🙂

What a sweet, heart-warming story! Just perfect for the holidays or any time you need a pick-me-up. The citizens of Jack’s Bay are always great for lifting my spirits anyway, but Rufus may just totally win the award for biggest heart! He’s that perfect blend of great big total bear of a man with enough awareness to know when those around him are hurt, upset, or needing a friendly ear. He’s open and warm—what you see is what you get. He’s also very intuitive (can we get him to teach classes to the men of the lower 48?????).

This amazing man is drawn (beyond all reason) to a “big city” woman who is all glitz, glamour, and clothes that just aren’t made for these muddy country roads. Together they have an amazing journey they will ever forget. Neither will several of the residents of Jack’s Bay.

While the Real Men of Jack’s Bay is a wonderful series of books, each story, including this one, can easily be read as a stand-alone. This is a great, sweet romantic story that’s appropriate for just about anyone.

I absolutely loved this story. Emily and Rufus are wonderful characters. Emily grows so much over the course of this short, sweet romance. Rufus makes some pretty significant changes to his mind-set as well. The plot is fantastic, all of the peripheral characters are fabulous. I love Susan Saxx's characters and stories, they feel like "real" people to me with all of the their foibles and triumphs. I'm definitely reading more from her as soon as I can.

What a sweet and heartwarming holiday story. I love small town stories and this is a good one. A big city girl meets a small town guy and discovers what's important in life. A very romantic holiday story. I enjoyed reading this story and look forward to reading the other books in this series. I received this book as a gift and voluntarily give this review.

Not just a holiday story. Rufus.... is just the most gorgeous of characters. These REAL men of Susan Saxx creation are wonderful. This story is a gem. Although part of a series, each book can be read as a standalone and each one holds their own. Do yourself a favour, read it and think of it every time you see a Candy Cane!
