Sometimes I still shake my head at myself! Me and sci-fi?

“Never,” I would have said, just a few years ago! I am much too caught up in the here and now for that. When I think about how big the universe is, and how small we all seem in comparison, I feel nothing but awe. In my writing, my passion goes to the creatures who live at the edge of our world. Aliens, werewolves, panther shifters, vampires - all of them fascinate me. That’s why I try, with the help of my keyboard, to breathe a life into them.

The Captive:

Cassie and Khazaar - Khazaar is the head warlord of the Qua’Hathri, a humanoid alien race who came to Earth and free humans from the oppressive rule of the Sethari, an alien race who feed off human energy. The Qua’Hathri are a dying race and need females to breed, they ask for one volunteer female for each of their warriors that died in the war, which amounted to something like 140 women. Cassie is chosen by Khazaar to be his wife.

Cassie has some psychic powers which seem to grow once she is on the spaceship. She initially balks at being chosen by Khazaar, mostly because she and the other woman weren’t volunteers like they were supposed to be, but were forced into service. Khazaar tells her if she doesn’t want him, then he can get someone else easily enough and to go with the other women.

Soon after, Cassie figures out that she was in fact attracted to Khazaar and wants to be with him, but when one of his generals overthrows him with the help of the Sethari, he wants Cassie and keeps Khazaar and the rest of the women inprisoned. Cassie and Khazaar use their psychic abilities to meet and make a plan, which ends up with the ship crashing on Betania.

At this point, Cassie thinks she is the only survivor and is found in the wilderness by a man named Zeyliv who wants to use her for her abilities. He looks human but she soon finds he is very predatory and travels with big cats. Each of the men in the village has a spirit animal and he is the leader of the village, who leads with an iron fist.

This book was narrated by Stella Bloom via solo narration. She does a great job and is terrific at doing different voices for different characters and showing emotion through her voice. I liked the story for the most part, though it went to places I didn’t expect at all and so many of the aliens were likable but did things worthy of hate. That I didn’t quite know what to think, but it did get me thinking so that was good.

The Prey:

Mara and Johar - Mara is daughter to Dr. Ruthiel, who did the genetic experiments on Zeyliv and his people. She is a doctor in her own right and lives to make her father proud. Johar is a Cyborg and Mara hates Cyborgs, though she appreciates that Johar was well made and is an impressive member of his kind. Though half-humans as they are derogatorily called, are looked upon as not as good as humans or genetically enhanced humans.

Dr. Ruthiel tells Mara and Johar (who is the best bounty hunter in the galaxy) that they need to go after Cassie from The Captive whom they know is with Khazaar who may be dangerous since he is a Qua’Hathri. They want Cassie since she is pregnant with twins (on is Khazaar’s and one Zeyliv’s).

Mara is interested in making humans stronger so they are not seen throughout the galaxy as weak and easy marks, like they were when the Sethari conquered Earth Before the Qua’Hathri freed Earth in exchange for women. Mara thinks her father is working within legal guidelines, but she feels that something is wrong with the assignment her father gave her.

Mara is not very likable at the beginning of the book. She is definitely prejudiced against cyborgs and sees them less like people and more like robots. She is also a bit too eager to please her father and not too worried about what they are doing to human beings at the research center. She thinks all his experiments were done on people that volunteered for them in order to be released from prison and that those who escaped did so due to aggression issues that were a result of the experiments, not that they were mistreated in any way.

This book was also narrated via solo narration and narrated by Justine Eyre who is a veteran narrator and I like her style. She does a great job and this story was interesting. Mara and Johar pose as smugglers and lovers. There are a bunch of secrets that Mara is not aware of that come out in the telling of this one.

The Human:

Cat and Talon - Talon thought it beneath him to pick up his King’s bride, a human female won in an interstellar poker game. He was once a Kanthari warrior and the most experience fighter and he would rather be hunting space pirates. However, when he was asked by his king to analyze the kings battle strategies in the last campaign, Talon had told him the unvarnished truth about the tactics that cost hundreds of his soldiers lives, so the King demoted him to the King’s official bride collector and harem guard.

Cat had found out about the “Woman Poker” and had heard that the women were paid generously and offered a safe existence in the form of an alien husband such as the King of Kanthari, King Fethoris III. Cat couldn’t live on Earth anymore, there were too many dark memories, so rather than kill herself, she decided to change her life by volunteering to be the prize in the poker game.

This book was narrated by Angela Daw. This is the first time I have heard her narration. She is a good narrator, had terrific tempo and was able to show sarcasm and emotion in her voice. I didn’t like her voice though, for some reason. I think because her voice was kind of deep, though it wasn’t masculine at all.

Cat has a psychic gift, though she promised herself she wouldn’t ever use it again. Not after what happened last time. Though what happened in her past doesn’t come out right away in the story. When she meets Talon, she is afraid since he is so different than what she is used to, so big and predatory. She was afraid he was there to kill her and she thought he was the husband that won her.

Cat had grown up on Earth, never meeting her parents. Her adoptive parents had died when she went to the mind reading institute. Her brother Coran had disappeared when they were fifteen. She still wanted to find her brother, but had to escape the mind reading institute and saw the poker game as her way out. However, when they were on their way to the mother ship Solaris, they got a communication that it was under attack by Pirates and they wouldn’t make it on time, so they had to go back to Earth.

I get the whole thing about fated mates, but these two fell for each other way too fast and I didn’t enjoy the story at first as much as the first two in the series, but it got much better as it went on. The adventure/journey was good and I loved the fact that Shazul, from the first two books was in this one as well. He was a great character, very lovable.

The Dragon:

Chloe and Coran -Coran is twin brother to Cat from The Human and son to Cassie and Khazaar from The Captive. He half human/half Alien and is a spy and an elite soldier in the Black Squad. He is tasked with going to Dassuria and infiltrating the fighting ring owned by the barbaric Shor Dasquian, the dragon lord. Coran is like a sociopath, he doesn’t feel emotions, though had learned to fake his expressions by looking at others.

Chloe is a human female who, like the women in the previous books, has psychic abilities. She has an agreement with Dasquian, to manipulate the emotions of certain fighters so that Dasquian can bet on the sure winners and make bank, but like Coran, Chloe is really there for another purpose. She is trying to find and rescue her sister Isabelle who is Dasquian’s woman and is addicted to drugs.

When Chloe goes into the mind of Coran and tries to manipulate his thoughts, it doesn’t work and has walls in his mind that keep her from accessing his emotions. So Chloe gets in trouble with Dasquian after Coran wins the fight that she was supposed to sway him to lose. She knows that Dasquian will fire her and punish her sister for this.

This book was told in dual points of view via solo narration. I generally don’t pick books that have only solo narration, but this audiobook came with the first three books for one credit in audible. However, I really liked the fact that each book was narrated by a different narrator. D.C. Cole does a great job and has a pleasant voice. This was the first book in the series narrated by a man, which I like.

This book had a good story and adventure like the first four books, the only thing I disliked about this series was that they didn’t really have HEA’s. They weren’t bad endings, but things weren’t all roses and rainbows either. Though every once in a while I read a romance that doesn’t have a HEA and I am ok with it.

This series is filled with intrigue, twists and turns, questions of morality and questionable choices. Most of the characters don't fall into a category of "good" or "bad," but rather are characters who can be both extremes and everything in between. Even the most vile of creatures has a sympathetic past or characteristic that while not excusing their behavior, makes the reader feel deeply for their suffering.
Everyone encountered has their own agenda and secrets. Any alliances are filled with lies and withholding truths, leaving everyone questioning how far they can trust each one. Manipulations are abound, further increasing the doubt and paranoia.

The story follows an intergenerational journey of individuals who have been genetically altered and individuals with exceptional abilities. A society filled with war and greed is the cause of their torment and the hand controlling each of their lives. An evil scientist intent on creating weapons and super-soldiers manipulates the circumstances around them for his own purposes. No one knows just how far his influence reaches, and what actions they take are actually fighting against him, and what actions are actually falling right into his plan.

=======
Book 1:
The characters in this book are just... WOW! They are multifaceted in a very realistic human way. None of them are really good, in fact, some of them are downright terrible. But no matter how awful they are, they are all sympathetic at some point in some way. I found myself thinking one moment "oh! This is my favorite character!" and the next thinking "you're evil and reprehensible" about the same character. Even a Sethari character - someone from a species that literally sucks the energy from humans as a source of sustenance - becomes likable. I found myself not knowing who I was really routing for, or what outcome I really wanted. This was what I loved most about the book, and what kept drawing me back.

The story isn't necessarily "us vs. them," or anywhere close to being that simple. Everyone has their own agenda, and it's each one for themselves. Communication is terrible, as even alliances are tentative and filled with mistrust.

Cassie, the main character is being manipulated by three men who, in their own way, are in love or infatuated with her. None of them are emotionally healthy, so their "love" for her isn't either. One wants her for the genetics behind her secret talent in order to be a ruler, and the other two want her for themselves as well as to use her powers for their own purposes. They abuse her power, but their motives are understandable at times.

It's full of political intrigue, and there are a couple of situations where the best solution is an obvious one, but the mistrust, pride, and differing agendas make them all refuse what would be best for everyone. So many characters are so unstable, that one wonders if it is a result of the trauma they've been through, or the genetic manipulations they've undergone.

-----Detailed Review with Spoilers-----
Cassie's character instantly endears herself, when she gives the president who has repeatedly sold them our a nice little "FU" in public. She becomes the main interest of Khazaar, the leader of the group to whom she is being sold. He's very off-putting and insulting to Cassie, and his attempts to influence her mind make her reject him. But since their minds connected, Cassie can't stop thinking about him. They know each other without having known each other for a day.
It's hard to see what Cassie sees in Khazaar, because we don't see much of him. What we do know is that he is part of a highly stratified society of conquerors - not exactly the humanitarian type. It doesn't help that he acts like an overgrown child. I never actually come to see what sparks the attraction between the two of them, as their interactions are minimal, and almost entirely sexual only. We don't see enough of him or their interactions together to see him as someone Cassie should love at all. The fact that he also withholds any details of their plans from her throughout the story further distances the reader from liking him. It makes it look as though Cassie is just an object or prize for him, rather than an actual partner. There were points where I found myself thinking she might be better off with Zeyliv, just because we get his back story that adds a great deal of compassion for his character and cause. And Zeyliv is still pretty deplorable, so that says a lot.

Hope is granted in the form of Khazaar's rival Vasul - he's far kinder to Cassie, and when a people's revolution begins, he is behind it. But none of this is out of the goodness of his heart. He derides Cassie's people, offers the other women a bleak future at best, and only wants her because she's the key to more power. And the people's revolution was just a means of doing the dirty work, as he immediately imprisons all of them, and then partners up with the Sethari - a species that has tormented Cassie and her people for decades.

Cassie bargains with Vasul for the lives of the others, while also planning an escape with those imprisoned. She influences a Sethari who is pretty low on the totem pole to assist her. Things go wrong, probably because Khazaar never included Cassie on the details of the plan, and they crash. Everyone around her is dead, and the planet she's stranded on is a brutal and deadly one. Zeyliv, the leader of the people inhabiting the planet, retrieves her and takes her to his home. Cassie learns that she is not the only survivor, but is not allowed to know who or how many survivors there are - just that they will likely be sold as slaves or made to work in the mines.

Zeyliv quickly learns of Cassie's talent and makes her use them to his benefit. Unfortunately, all of her actions end tragically. Cassie hopes she might be able to find allies with his two wives, but while one is rightfully beloved, the other clearly has nothing but malicious motivations. When Zeyliv's infidelity of his second and primary wife is revealed (and that her son isn't biologically his), resulting in her death, the entire community blames the consequences on Cassie. It doesn't elaborate enough on this culture to lead us to understand WHY she is blamed, because it's clear to the reader that she isn't the one who committed the adultery, isn't the one to reveal the secret, nor is she the one who carried the execution. Either way, she is hated by the entire community and will only be protected if she remains in Zeyliv's good graces.

Zeyliv comes up with the most disturbing punishment - Cassie is to replace the wife he lost and she has to give birth to a son. Since Zeyliv has been infatuated with her, but can't actually come out and say it, this is his fraked up way of attempting to draw her to him. This is further complicated by the fact that there is a spark between the two of them, no matter how much Cassie also dislikes him. Zeyliv's first wife is infuriated. She has idolized Zeyliv and wants him for herself. Anyone who comes between them is to be eliminated. In her mind, he is not an individual with agency; any woman he is attracted to isn't a result of his choice, but rather the fault of the woman.

When Zeyliv discovers Cassie is still determined to be with Khazaar, he comes up with a reprehensible ultimatum. She can free 6 of the prisoners. She will be presented with two at a time, and has to decide who will be freed and who will be sold into slavery. When we learn of Zeyliv's past, we see that he was forced into a similar situation. When they were imprisoned and genetically altered, they had a chance of escape, but only for so many of them. Zeyliv had to decide who was strong enough to escape and who had to be left behind. Those left behind included his wife, who he killed to spare from more torment. All of his actions, including the most reprehensible, on Betania have have been made with the motivation of going back to save whoever was left. Here, the reader is drawn to two conclusions: Zeyliv wants to have Cassie's genes in his son, because it will likely be the next generation to liberate the others. If his son has Cassie's special talents, it would give them the advantage. The other is that the reader begins to wonder if Zeyliv is doing this as some sort of attempt to get her to understand him. He wants her to love him, but maybe he thinks she can only love him if she is as emotionally ruined as she is? There is a spark between them, and he thinks they can bond other this?

Zeyliv is in denial about his relationships, and it contributes to his downfall. When the prisoners stage their escape, he is distracted by Cassie, enabling his first wife to stab him, letting the prisoners escape, and getting Cassie out of their lives forever. The other details behind the escape attempt are confusing. Where did the lightning come from exactly? But the promise of more excitement comes when scientists discover Cassie has conceived twins - with different fathers (Khazaar and Zeyliv) Not only that, but they begin to share genetic material while fetuses, resulting in them each gaining more and more in strength. What will this mean for the future, and to what lengths will people go to use these two for their own nefarious purposes?
=======
Book 2:
The second installment of this series focuses a bit behind the man who is ultimately behind all of the horrors of the second book. This evil man has a brilliant daughter who he has conditioned to believe that what they are doing is for knowledge, not for war and greed. She's able to moralize the experiments with her belief that all of their subjects are criminals who are volunteering in exchange for amnesty. They aren't, of course, and even if they were, offering freedom to criminals with this condition is still morally depraved, but I digress...

Mara's father asks her to track down Cassie, making this the first mission he's entrusted to her outside of the lab. She's elated, but disheartened when she hears a cyborg is to accompany her and be her equal. She's been conditioned - litterally, to see cyborgs as not human. She doesn't believe that this cyborg could have feelings or opinions, ever though she exhibits more characteristics of the stereotypical cyborg than he does.

As the two of them do some undercover work to get information on Betania, not only does Mara come to have feelings for Johan that are clearly reciprocated, but her belief that there is something suspicious about being put on this mission grows. She knows Johan is withholding information from her, and for various reasons she also withholds information from him. Ultimately, she trusts him, but he has put his blind trust in an organization they know little about. Mara can trust him, but can she trust who he has put his trust in? Much intrigue follows. Like the other book, everyone has their own agenda, and nobody knows the full story, or what anyone else is ultimately after.

Mara thinks her life has been utterly turned upside by falling for a cyborg, but is is upturned and scattered when the ulterior purpose of this mission is revealed to her, and she catches a life altering illness. The experiences Mara goes through result in physical and mental changes. And the extent to which Ruthiel controls things is exposed.

---Detailed review w/potential spoilers---
It's shocking enough to see how Ruthiel is behind what happens to Mara and that she is nothing by an experiment to him. But when we see how complex his intention are, and how he has influenced major events throughout the universe, it is mind-reeling. He's even behind the invasion by the Sethari. It wasn't so much an invasion as it was a deal: Ruthiel gives them humans in exchange for their knowledge and technology. And when the Sethari are of no more use, he uses Khazaar's strength and casualties to get rid of them, again, giving humans in exchange for him doing the heavy lifting.

Seeing Shazuul again in this book was wonderful. He was never thought much of by his own species, but the acceptance he has found among others, and the kindness he got from Cassie have made him rebuke his own species. He's also suffered painful torture at the hands of the Betanians before being released. Mara's bonding with a creature she once saw as disgusting and utterly beneath her shows the extent of her internal transformation. Their relationship is incredibly sweet, lighthearted, and uplifting. And it helps Mara develop and learn to live with the new powers she has (much like Cassie's)

The informant who accompanies Shazuul with Mara and Johan is a mysterious one. The fact that he has Shazuul as an acquaintance makes him seem trustworthy, and the joy he shows when Mara restore's Shazuul's snout makes it seem as though he genuinely has at least Shazuul's best interests at heart, but his story never fully adds up. Considering most of Betanians despise Cassie as having brought ruin and horror to their world, one wonders if he doesn't just want to find Cassie to help her, but in order to exact revenge.

Ultimately, Mara and Johan aren't able to fully defeat Ruthiel, but they save the twins and at least temporarily force a stalemate. He has literally created all of them and it's almost as though he knows their every move before hand due to that fact. He's the one behind all sides, and at heart it's just part of his larger experiment. His hand is in everything, person, institution, and events.

As for the relationship between Mara and Johan, it's realistic in that it's far from perfect, but they are working on establishing trust and understanding. Their happy ending isn't clear cut, as it's not the end by far, but more likely the beginning of an even greater challenge. But they take it on in each others' arms.

=======
Book 3:
As in previous books, the ultimate goal is blurred by the fact that so many things are connected and everyone has their own motives. Each person has their own agendas and no one knows the full story. Trust and relationships are questioned, and moral decisions are questioned. Characters are a bit less developed than in previous books in favor of furthering the story line that sets the stage for the next step.

In this third installment, we follow the journey of one of Cassie's children, Cat. Cat has been mysteriously separated from her twin brother and subsequently taken in by the Mind Reader's Institute. The institute is rather dubious, and when Cat shows resistance against them, she knows her life is on the line for crossing them. Lacking another means of escape, she volunteers to be a prize in a poker tournament. She's to be sent off to the winner as his new wife, and given a large sum of money in exchange. Her end game is to escape from the man who won her, once she's far away from earth, and take the money to start a new life and track down her brother and parents.

Her plans are derailed when she goes into the mind of Talon, the man meant to bring her to Fethoris. This results in her understanding him in every way without having known him for long. Talon is a man who values life over objects, and he's more than willing to sacrifice wealth and resources in order to keep the men under his command alive. He tries to manage this despite the fact that the king is reckless and sees others are disposable.

He wants to have a life with Cat, but is deterred from starting this life by mutiny, and the promise to help get revenge for a woman Fethoris tortured. He has to balance working with a species of dubious intent and keeping Cat safe. They each realize that the only way to accomplish their goals is to withhold information from each other - something that further drives a wedge between them. Cassie has been lied to at every step of her life, but a benevolent individual who has watched over her from the beginning knows each lie was to protect Cat. This benevolent watchkeeper (Shazuul!) clears up many of these lies for her (her adoptive parents having to shun them for their own safety, the fact that her bio-parents and brother have survived) but he still has to withhold information from her to keep her safe, however much it hurt them both.

We get to see Shazuul at his peak, in a way. He is of nothing but good intentions and his only mission is to keep Cat safe. His adoration and friendship with Cassie and Mara is the driving force behind is love and protection of the twins. His own abilities are shown to have strengthen, letting him help Cat as he did Mara. But one wonders where Shazuul got these abilities. Was is a result of his contact and friendship with Cat?

When we meet Talon, he is a straightforward and solid individual. As he spends more time on earth, he becomes more mentally unstable, lashing out at random. I also have to scoff at him when he ponders why women on earth are always so determined to prove their strength, independence, and worth. He thinks they are silly for hanging on to a constant competition with men. Clearly, he has no understanding of the history of gender relations in most earth cultures. But that seems like a silly excuse, as he sees women being mistreated all the time. I mean, he's transporting Cassie because his king won her in a poker tournament for crying out loud! He sees the way Fethoris has treated women, and even did what he could to quickly end the torment of the Krak woman who Fethoris treated in the cruelest way imaginable. Stupid man.

*side-note: I appreciate that the author moved away from a racist description of sitting and moved to the term crisscross, but as a warning, there is an able-ist slur used at one point.

----Spoilers----
The revenge the Krak seek against Fethoris align well with the goals of Cat and Talon. Since accomplishing their goal necessitates each of them lying or withholding from each other, the emotional effect of these deceptions derails the original trap that was set. Cat, not being one to just mope forever over a man and be his bait, takes matters into her own hands and runs away before they complete the plan. Her return to apologize to the Krak lures Fethoris into a more convenient and suiting trap.

Both the betrayal by Talon's men and the culmination of luring Fethoris end up in a zoo where the Krak have taken up residence. This zoo echoes back to a memory Cat has of Coran, and is also an excellent metaphor for the way Fethoris views women. The zoo is set up with numerous cages to display exotic animals, much in the way Fethoris sees women as exotic items to be displayed for his own amusement.

We are left with new questions as to why Cat and Coran cannot yet meet, and what might happen when they do!

========
Book 4:
We are introduced to Coran through the eyes of the character Chloe. Chloe shares the special talents of many of the previous characters, more specifically, she is able to go into someone's mind to sense their emotions, and to also manipulate emotions. They are brought together as employees of a prominent member of the underground economy. Chloe is there in an attempt to pay her sister’s debt, freeing hire from Shor and her increasing drug addiction. Coran is undercover to expose Shor’s illegal activities and to learn of his own past.

Coran is a fighter for Shor, while Chloe’s role is to attend the illegal fights he stages, and manipulate the emotions of a fighter in order to result in the winner being of Shor's selection. Once she stages the results for a certain number of fights, her sister can be released.

Coran is a new fighter, and a mystery to Chloe. She is hesitant to influence him, and distracted when she senses his emotions as being almost blocked. She is distracted enough that Coran wins. Shor's punishment to Chloe is that she must gain Coran's trust.

Coran is the one to come after Chloe, drawn to her for a reason he can't pinpoint. When she accidently unlocks his ability to feel, it cements their growing relationship. This causes tension with Coran’s partner and most l

THE PREY
A Twisted Sense of Beauty💃💋

I really, really wish this book📑 had been written with dual points of view! But it's a great book anyway.

Mara is Her father's daughter and his assistant in his "creations" . He creates human and animal hybrids and populated a planet with them. But, his 👑 crowning achievements are the cyborgs he creates. Her father insists the Cyborgs are not living beings, therefore he can treat them however he wants.
Johar🐺🔪🔫 is one of his first cyborgs and probably his best.. He is tasked with accompanying Mara, in a cross universe chase to find Cassie, a DNA modified human woman pregnant with two unborn DNA modified babies.
Each baby has a different father. One baby is sired by Zeyliv, the 👑King of the escaped DNA modified humans on the planet Betania. He has been killed and his wife is now 👑Queen and ruler. Cassie was his lover, which made the Queen very unhappy!

The father of the other baby is a Qua'Hathri Warrior👹🔪🔫. Cassie has fled Betania with the Warrior👹🔪🔫. Johar🐺🔪🔫 and Mara are too late. The chase continues......

Mara spends much of the first part of the book feeling smug and superior to Johar🐺🔪🔫, when in fact, He is completely superior to her in every way!

You get four well- written stories, full of action, romance, aliens and a universe that pulls you in. The first book starts the series about Cassie and her Qua'Hathri warrior - Khazaar, the second is about Mara and her cyborg - Johar, the third is about Catherine and her Kanthari warrior - Talon, the fourth is about Chloe and her dragon warrior- Coran.
1. The Captive
Cassie is one of many human women who is given to the Qua'Hathri warriors as a trade for their help in ridding the Sethari from Earth. Cassie is not happy being one of the chosen and Warlord Khazaar notices and choses her to be one of his wives. They board a spaceship which Khazaar summons her to his chambers, Cassie refuses him and the next day he chooses another women and Cassie chooses another warrior called Varsul but Khazaar gets mad and drags Cassie away when the ship gets attacked by the Sethari that Varsul made a deal with. With the help of Cassie using her mind powers she make a deal with a Sethari called Shazuul to free Khazaar and the prisoners but during the escape the ship crashes on Betania. The survivors are now captives of the ruler Zeyliv who is planning to sell them in the slave market. Cassie is forced to use her gift to get the best price or he harms Khazaar and the survivors. Does Cassie find a way to help the survivors escape Betania? There is a chapter in the end that continues to a cliffhanger for Cassie and Khazaar future problems.
The Prey
This is the second in the series and ends with a cliffhanger for the future books. Even as it ends sadly I still enjoyed reading this book about Johar and Mara. Mara a scientist is summoned to her father's lab -Ruthiel when he tells her that she and a cyborg named Johar are to look and bring back Cassie who's pregnant with twins from two different fathers. Mara doesn't want to work with Johar but they finally agree to retrace the steps of Cassie on Betania to get more information on were she went. On Betania, they stop at a brothel which Johar meets Hazathel and Shazuul who later help our couple to find Cassie and Khazaar, later at the brothel Mara and Johar hook up which gives Mara a virus that give's her powers to read minds. Do they find Cassie or does Ruthiel find them first? What does Ruthiel have planned in his secret laboratory? Is Mara safe from being a test subject now she can read minds?
The Human
Cat volunteers to be sold in a poker game as a future bride because she's wanted by the Mind Readers because of her mental powers and needs to get off Earth and she also looking for her brother who is off- world. King Ferthoris wins and sends Talon who's a lion shifter with a group of soldiers to pick up his new bride. As they start to leave Earth their main transport ship is stolen by pirates. This brings Cat and Talon together, because when they first met Cat thinks Talon was the winner and Talon feels a attraction toward Cat but doesn't want to betray his King. King Ferthoris (who is considered crazy and mean) gives a order to kill Talon so Cat and Talon are on the run and they meet other "Aliens" who don't like King Ferthoris. Does Talon betray his King because he's fallen for Cat? I loved the "Alien Characters" in this novella you can picture them in your mind. There is betrayal, action, romance and bonding in this enjoyable Sci-fi novella.
The Dragon
Coran is a mixed-alien who has no emotions or memories and is in the Black Squad. He is under- cover to get information about Dasquian's illegal activities in his gaming hall. Coran is portraying a fighter and he's fighting in a bout. Cloe is at the fight and she's been told by Dasquian to make Coran lose by using her mental powers, but she gets distracted and Coran wins the bout. Frighten because she failed, she's summoned to Dasquian who has her sister Isabelle under locked and key and drugged. She bargains with Dasquian who she's afraid of to influence three more fights but Dasquian wants her to get close to Coran. Coran who is strangely curious about Cloe and asks to meet. They meet outside when the gaming hall explodes and is over-taken by the Black Squad. After the explosion Coran kisses Cloe to calm her but the kiss jump starts his memories and feelings. This starts our two to investigate as they each get to know each other. So who gave the unsanctioned order to attack the gaming hall? Who took Coran memories and feelings? Can he control himself after years without feelings? Will Coran help Cloe free her sister from Dasquian? Will he find his family? During the journey we meet Shazuul (there's a tearjerker) who helps our couple while he fulfills his promise to look after the children of Khazaar and Cassie. I loved this like all the others in this series of the Betania Breed that had more drama than action. Can't wait for the next one.
This is a great box set that shows the good and bad in humans and the aliens along with the romance. I volunteer to read and review this ARC.

Anthology of books one through 4 of the Betana breed books
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. In this series in book 1, a human woman, Cassie, is paired with a Qua'Hathri warlord, Khazaar as part of a settlement for the Qua'Hathri assistance in ridding Earth of the Sethari invaders. Cassie is one of 168 women sent to the victors to mate and produce children as their race is dying out. She was selected by their leader Khazaar as she was able to read his thoughts...but then she was stolen from him and taken to another planet where she is taken by a hybrid shifter. She is eventually reunited with Khazaar, but they are being tracked....In book 2, Joher is the best bounty hunter in the universe, with a 99% success rate and is a cyborg. Mara is the daughter of the man who turned Joher from fully human into a machine and man hybrid. Mara is paired with him to go after Cassie Burnett who is pregnant with twins and supposed to be with two mates, one a Qua'Hathri warrior and the other a shifter from Betana. Mara also discovers her father had experimented on several species trying to make a super-soldier and now wanted to experiment on her because of her own the mind-reading capabilities. . He also wanted to get his hands on Cassie's children, but there was a bittersweet outcome for these star-crossed lovers....Book 3 we are introduced to Talon Delkhari, a warlord from Kanthari 7 who angered King Ferthoris by being honest when asked for advice. He actually gave advice which was not what the king wanted to hear, so now he was relegated to running the king's errands. He was on Earth to pick up the King's newly acquired wife, won in an illegal poker game. Catherine Burke (aka Cat)was wondering what she got herself into when she applied as a bride. She met Talon and was pleasantly surprised until he told her it was not him she was marrying but his king, and proceeded to show her the book about the king and his harem which she would soon join. She is the mind-reading daughter of Cassie and appears fully human. While he was on Earth fetching the king's bride, pirates boarded the mother ship and stole it. Several of his men escaped in life pods when Talon ordered them not to fight but to get out. Cat asked who the traitor was...which was not something he had thought of. She found that Talon was a shifter of some sort...being able to turn into a saber-tooth type of lion...and he discovered she had a gift for reading minds. She is looking for her twin brother Coran who she hasn't seen for years and the Mind-Reader's on Earth are looking for her, which is why she wanted to go to another planet as a bride...but you will need to read the book to see which of the previous characters show up in this book and how she and Talon escape the wrath of the king after being betrayed by the traitor....Book 4 is the story of Coran Burke, who is more than human. He is the twin brother of Cat, but he looks more like his father who is a legendary warrior, Khazaar Drasurq, with light blue scales and warrior skills honed to sharpness with the elite military group he was a part of. His emotions were muted because his memories were wiped out so he wouldn't remember he had a family or set out to find them. He had met Chloe, who worked for the owner of an illegal fight club, Shor Dasquian. Chloe was an empath who could read people and influence their behavior. However, she could not reach Coran, but her interference in his mind cause some of the memory blocks to crumble. She was supposed to influence him to lose a fight with a shifter, but Coran won, causing Chloe to have to account for her lack of control with Coran to Shor. Shor was actually a member of an ancient race called the Beliel who thrived on the suffering of others...and he knew something about his father so Coran wanted to meet with him. Chloe was only working for him because her sister was addicted to drugs which Shor provided and she was trying to pay off her sister's debts to get her out....but you will have to read the book to see how these two meet up with his old caretaker, Shazuul and how Coran's lost memory unleashes a demand for revenge on those who took his family and memories from him. Tremendous series, can't wait for Cat and Coran to meet their dad who telepathically found Cassie on the sleeping ship...but that's upcoming....

The Captive: What a story. This has so much suspense and drama throughout the story. Khazaar and Cassie has this amazing chemistry with each other. They know how to banter with each other that either brings out the best or the worst. The story has me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t stop reading it. The ending is amazing and I can’t wait to read the second book.

The Prey: Oh wow! Mara and Johar have this wild ride throughout the entire story. They have fantastic chemistry and it is felt throughout it as well. The second book in the series has so much drama, mystery, suspense and even romance. It twists and turns and has you guessing so much. It is definitely worth reading and doesn’t disappoint.

The Human: Great Read! This was a fantastic story. It is so different and unique that it just draws you in. The characters were extremely well developed and have amazing personalities and chemistry with each other. Cat and Talon work well with each other. They tend to get emotional but hey who doesn’t. It has so much action, suspense twists and turns that it just keeps you on your toes. It is definitely worth reading and doesn’t disappoint.

The Dragon: Oh me oh my, we get to learn about Cat's brother Coran and what has been going on with his life. Now because of the beautiful way these books are written you don't have to have read the others in the series but it will make it even more entertaining. Coran has so much going on with his life. He meets Chloe and boy does she give him a run for his money. Both are stubborn but extremely caring and protective of the ones they care about. This story is packed full of information and drama. It has action and some suspense with some great romance along the way. It will draw you in until you just can't put it down. It is most definitely worth reading.

Betania Breed 1-The Captive- Very good start. The book is exciting and full of adventure. There is a lot going on in a short amount of time. you will love this book and will hate the wait until the next.
Betania Breed 2 – The Prey- A good story. There are a lot of little different things going on. Can't put my finger on it excitedly and it can be distracting. I like the by play between the four main people. I still wonder who told Johar who he needed to help them find Cassie. Makes you wonder what expressly is going on.
Betania Breed 3 – The Human- This book is the third in the series and that I have read. They all are exciting and have a lot of scary things going on. It catches you and then takes off. This one is about the children of the woman in the first book. Or one child. A lot of time has gone by. It blew my mind when I remembered what was said about the children in the second book. OOOH!! really good story. I know that you will like it.
Betania Breed 4 – The Dragon- I do love this series. To me the the recurring theme is not only mind reading but that little Shazuul a Sethari. He was in the first book all the way through to this last one. He helped were he could but he was all ways there. This whole series has a way to worm inside you and you become addicted to them. I fix dinner and can't think about anything but the story. It will grab you and sink teeth into you. It just gets better and better. Excitement, danger, you can feel it and not know were it is coming from. Then the next sentence and wham it throws you someplace else. It is an excellent book but it will drive you nuts trying to stay ahead of it. Good luck trying not to just sit down and read and not stay their until the story is finished.

The Captive---Cassie and a few other women have been given to an alien species that helped Earth against another alien species. The leader, Khazaar Drasurq., takes a liking to her and claims her. Unfortunately circumstances Cassie and Khazaar
have many obstacles to get past before they can be together.

The Prey----my! A wonderful story about cyborgs and humans. Mara is the daughter of the scientist who experiments on humans. He;s made cyborgs as well as people with animal beings. For some odd reason he has decided that Mara should go on a reconnaissance with Johar the cyborg. Then he gives Johar as much authority in this adventure which seems to aggravate Mara. Their job is to find a human woman who is pregnant with twins. He is so concerned about this woman that he wants her found. The journey takes them to a planet where her and Johar visit a brothel to get information. Unfortunately Mara picks up a virus which leaves her disfigured. Then things turn not only worse but totally weird!!
Fantastic story which will keep you guessing as you go from one situation to another.

The Human----Talon Delkhari has one job to bring the human that his king won in a poker game. But Talon's inner dragon has laid claimed to her. Now he has to decide whether to let instinct take over or loyalty.

The Dragon---Coran Burke is a fighter who has no memory. Until the day he spies a woman that seems to bring out memories. Now what is he to do and how is he to do it.

Each story leads into the other and this entire series will keep you enthralled till the last page.

This is one great series. The Betania Breed Series (Book 1-4) by Jenny Foster
Book #1-#4. It starts out with Khazaar and Cassie story. How and why Khazaar came to earth and how Cassie got involved. It is a great romance story. This story is full of twist and turns and keeps you reading and wanting more, and you get it in book two. This is the story of Mara and Johar. Johar is a cyborg, half man half robot. Mara is the daughter of the Dr. who has been messing with genes of the human race. They go looking for Cassie and Khazaar. The next book we meet Talon who is picking up a bride for his king. Talon falls for her and wants to protect her from the king who has many wives and get bored after two weeks. Then we come to book four and I had read this story before so here is my review of it. I had a little trouble getting into this story but once I figured out who was whom. I fell in love with this story, have to give this book a five star. This is the fourth book in this series and I can’t wait to read book one, two, and three. Chloe is working for Dasquian because her sister is stuck at his house and hooked on drugs. She can influence people and make them feel things so they will lose the fights. She is to make Coran lose his fight, but unknown to Chloe he was sent from earth to take down Dasquian and his fighting ring. Can they work together? I received an ARC and have voluntarily left a review.

4.5 out of 5
While this type of book is not really amongst what I normally read I found I truly enjoyed reading books 1 through 4 of Jenny Fosters Betania Breed series. I loved how each book led to the next and how while each was a totally separate story they all did connect and flow and how certain characters made frequent appearances. There were also a few intriguing twists that I found rather unique and surprising. I usually stay away from the types of stories with evil scientists, cyborgs and various aliens because for the most part they all simply seem like the same basic story told again and again with rather little to make them exciting or at times even entertaining, or the themes are just used as a way to try to spice up a book that's basically all sex. These books do not fall into that hole for me at all, they all have a very well written storyline that doesn't depend on sex scenes to keep the reader interested. I found myself able to relate to the main characters in each story no matter what their origins which, for me anyway, always makes for a much more satisfying read. I would definitely recommend theses books to anyone who enjoys some romantic sci-fi that will keep you needing to know what's going to happen next.

I received a free ARC of these books in return for an honest review.

This is a collection of stories that takes place, after earth is taken over by an alien race called the Sethari, creatures with long noses, that suck energy out of humans. Humans that where left alive after a 100 year battle on earth by the Sethari, where finally saved by another alien race called Qua Hathri, an dying race aliens, that came to earth to make a deal with earth people. They would save them from the Sethari in exchange for young health women to breed with and bare their young. One such woman is Cassie, you will follow her journey through this fictional time, from the very beginning of her being pick by the alien Lord Khazaar Drasurq, falling in love, her captured by another alien race, thrown in prison, giving birth to twins, losing her children and husband and follow her children through their lives and what they grow up to be. It was a unique, well written series and many weird and dangerous creatures and characters you will meet long the way. It was full of emotions and actions through out the books, but most of all it was a love story, that expand the decades and brought two people, a human and an alien Lord back together again.
I am volunteering to leave a review for a ARC of this book.

This series contains 4 books about love but also about accepting yourself and others. Is about learning to love and not letting appearances stand in the way for your happiness. The characters have an amazing chemistry and passion between them and develop nicely through the books.
1. The Captive; Cassie and Khazaar, a story about love, to not let your pride get in the way.
2. The Prey; when Johar and Mara first meet they do not see eye to eye but things changes.
3. The Human; I loved the storyline and plot. The characters, Catherine and Talon, are well described and likeable.
4. The Dragon has a spectacular storyline. The story about Chloe and Coran, keeps you on the edge just wanting to read on and know what happens next.

Jenny Foster does an excellent job of creating an alien world and its characters. Add the amazing chemistry and passion between the characters and you will find it very hard to put the books down once you start reading it!The mix of emotions, drama, laughter, romance and more makes it well worth the read. If you love shifter romance and aliens this is a series for you.

What a steamy box set! Here's my review on each book (I reviewed book 2 before I think)

Book 1
Fast paced start to the series - you can expect lots of action and plenty of steam throughout, a great intro which leads beautifully into book 2.

Book 2
This one had a lot going on which is a little distracting but it culminated pretty well. I was left with some questions but nothing that kept me from continuing onto the next book. The story begins to weave itself even more here.

Book 3
Fantastic lead into the next heros - the children of the women from the other books way into the future. This one made lots of references to the other books in a a nice way. I remembered all the details from what was said in the other books because this one brought them back in a marvellous way.

Book 4
AWESOME finish! Wow all my questions were answered in this one. I loved how Sethari played a role in each book too. By this point I was addicted to the series and I just can't wait for her next series.

5 stars!

Would highly recommend to any scifi romance genre readers. I love the writing style of this author and how she makes you feel so involved in the characters lives and the story as a whole. From the minute you start reading you are hooked into wanting to read more and find out what happens this is proven by it taking me two and a half days to read all four books. I have to say the fact that so many things are happening at all times was slightly confusing for me to keep track of who is where and doing what when we swapped books. However, i loved this series and wish I could read more. I gave the first two books 3 stars each and the last two 4 stars. It takes a lot for me to give a book five stars. Would highly recommend this book. Once i finished reading this I gushed to my husband all about it and complained that I couldn't keep reading more.

I received an arc of this collection but all thoughts and opinions are my own

Betania Breeds is a series (books 1-4) of science fiction/fantasy romance. At the start of reading it I had a silent groan at the sheer size of the four books but by the end I wanted nothing more than to keep going. The worlds the books encompass are so very well described and the characters... oh the characters will leap off the page and straight into your heart. One of my favourites is Shazuul, who starts out a foolish bad guy and is transformed by love and acceptance into a hero. I think Shazuul is the most marvellous creature, an energy vampire who is so very ugly and scary and yet he grows to love and be loved. All the other characters, at the very least they shine and mostly they’re unforgettable. For example Khazaar and Cassie and later their twins. But there are several more. I feel as though I’ve lost family with the closing of the fourth story. A brilliant storyline, lots of all kinds of action and romance. The series is a keeper.

I truly enjoyed reading this action-packed & fascinating Sci-Fi alien romance series (Books 1-4), and would recommend it:
There is: drama, intrigue, suspense, twists & turns, aliens, shifters, psychics, pirates, a undeserving king, adventure, action, special abilities, attractions, danger, enemies, murder, drugs, conflict, emotional blackmail, rejection, abduction, deceit, betrayal, rebellion, misunderstandings, revenge, attractions, passion, love and a few steamy scenes.
The various characters are quite well-developed with individual personalities which occasionally results in verbal confrontation and/or verbal conflict, at times they entwine fairly well with each other, and react with varying emotions to the situations they find themselves in.
The story-line and plot is well-thought out and written, it keeps the reader’s attention.

A great solid read

Having read most of these books earlier I wasn't sure if I would " get anything out of a box set " but it was well worth it to have them all in the correct order and to be able to read them as one story rather than disjointed and trying to recollect what had happened earlier . Brilliantly written and full of adventure/misadventure , betrayal and unusual friends fear, frustration, love and so many twists that it can make your mind into a corkscrew NOT a typical hea ( although there is another book to come ) so although there are many endings not everything is tied up in a pretty red bow Well worth buying and will give you hours of reading and even more of contemplation

Have you ever read something so fascinating yet frustrating, so full of hope and a joyful feeling and yet it leaves you incomplete because the story is not over? Well, welcome to the world of the Betania Breed series! Each book ends in a positive high but leaves you with so many unanswered questions that, if you're like me, left me almost climbing the walls for the next installment! The great thing here is that there are four books to devour, one after the other. This is an epic space fantasy that's full of romance and jam packed with danger and suspense. A most worthy read for sci-fi romance lovers everywhere! Sweet!

*I recieved a copy of this series to be honestly reviewed*

Okay, y’all. Cassie. I fell in love with this chick the moment she shook hands with the president. She is my kind of gal! I loved the whole cast of characters hers really, but that first, defining moment just swept me right up into her story and held on tight. Her love story and those that follow were so wonderfully imagined and described, the drama and action easy to visualize and really connect with! And the sexy times? Rawr. But the story doesn’t revolve around those scenes, doesn’t make you feel like you’re just reading fuller to get to them!

I definitely recommend this series for sci-fi and romance fans, so long as you mind a bit of spice!

Very action packed science fiction stories with a little romance that are well written and full of twists and turns I didn't see coming. The character building and scenarios are well thought out and the worlds were interesting and well developed. The characters are rarely truly good or bad, but a mix that felt realistic. I enjoyed the descriptions of the different aliens, their languages, habits, coloration, smells and food preferences. These stories clearly took a lot of thought since they follow each other but can still be read individually. Very nice set of stories.

An absolutely fantastic collection of sci-fi Alien stories, 4 sexy aliens finding their sassy stubborn mates, even though the books take after each one before there is a certain amount of time after each story.
Book 1 The Captive: Cassie’s and Khazaar’s story.
Book 2 The Prey: Mara’s and Johar’s story.
Book 3 The Human: Cat’s and Talon’s story.
Book 4 The Dragon: Cloe’s and Coran’s story.
I absolutely loved these stories there’s action, danger, suspense, romance and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages. A fantastic set of stories a 5 plus +++++ ⭐️ read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

This series is absolutely great. It starts with Cassie and Khazaar. When the series starts you may think that this can’t be a romance, but every book has it’s own couple to follow. Shazuul is a secondary character that started out in the bad guy side. But with Cassie he changed and I loved that little guy. He brought all of the books together in a way that had me feeling the connections. If Sci-Fi is what you like, do NOT miss this series. You won’t be sorry. I volunteered to read an advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.

I have only been able to get about halfway through this series. There are numerous grammatical errors that detract from the story, as you have to take a moment and figure out what the author is trying to say. Partly because of this, the story does not flow well.
There are points where I feel the story is rushed and others where it flows beautifully. I do like the story and thinks it's a great concept; it just needs work.

HOW FAR WILL HUMANS SINK TO TRY AND BETTER THEMSELVES?

A series where you can get immersed and lose yourself. The extent that beings go to protect each other is exhibited in each of the main characters in each book. It makes you want to keep reading and wanting to know how the series ends. Such a THRILLING and INTRIGUING series. Join Cassie, Khazaar and Shazuul in book one, “The Captive”. Join Mara and Johar in book two, “The Prey”. “The Human” will introduce you to Cat and Talon. The fourth book, “The Dragon” introduces Coran and Chloe. Their interactions left my heart in the stories.

This is a great series that is not like others. I loved how each book led to the next and how while each was a totally separate story that connect and flow and how certain characters made frequent appearances. I love how each book revolves around different couples but yet is still has a connection to the first couple. I look forward to reading the fifth book in this series when it comes out.

I fell in love with this series from the first book. The storylines flowed nicely from one book to the next. Each book had its own story and several characters made their appearance throughout the series. The main couple was always connected to each other couple which led to more of a connection and sense that this plot was well thought-out. I would recommend this series to everyone and each book from the author thereafter.

Just not good

I love science fiction romance so was super excited to read these books but they just weren’t good. The plot jumped around a lot and never left you feeling fulfilled. There are definitely some interesting concepts but the execution is lacking and just left me disappointed. I would love to see what this author is capable of 5 years from now because the ideas are there.

I really loved reading and listening to the Betania Breed Series. From Cassie and Kharzaar, Mara, Johar, Coran, Chloe, Talon and Cat. I really liked all of these stories none of them had a true happy ending but left the tale open to other possibilities. I’m going to go on to the next story from the author and truly look forward to seeing what happens with the family if they are reunited and back together again.

Fantastic Action-Packed Series. I had read a couple of these books previously but must have missed the others, so it is great to have them in one collection now. Wonderfully, well written stories with strong characters and some twists to keep your interest. It was very hard to put these books down.
I received an ARC copy of this collection and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
