The last time I saw Thanos he was cosplaying as the Jurassic Park mosquito, frozen within an amber box or something at the end of Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity event (but then who hasn’t woken up someplace kerazy after a few too many, amirite fellas??). I (intentionally) missed The Black Vortex crossover but it looks like he freed himself and has returned from somewhere. Except now he’s got the space cancer and is dying - but not if his weeny son Thane can kill him first!

Yeah… didn’t think much of this one. Like all Thanos stories, this one’s about someone trying to kill him. Ho hum. Think they’ll succeed? Think he’ll succumb to space AIDS or whatever he’s got ahead of the two highest profile MCU movies about to be released where he’s the Big Bad? Exactly. Tension-free nonsense.

Thane’s not much of a character either - he’s essentially Thanos-lite and who needs that when you’ve got the real thing appearing alongside him? This book is absolutely stuffed with Marvel cosmic characters too. You name it and they’re here. And they’re all pew-pewing lasers at Thanos… snore. Thanos meanwhile is trying to keep sitting on the ugliest-looking throne I’ve ever seen.

Mike Deodato’s art is excellent as are Frank Martin’s colours (laser blasts in all the colours of the rainbow!) but Jeff Lemire ain’t wowing me with this weak and forgettable story. Like many comic book supervillains, Thanos works as a one-dimensional antagonist in a larger story but fails to compel in a solo series.

Thanos is back to reclaim the Black Guard. But he has a larger purpose, he is sick and searching for a cure. At the same time, his son Thane is assembling a team Oceans 11 style to take Thanos down, once and for all.

Lemire does a good job tackling a difficult subject, Marvel's cosmic characters. They are difficult to write without turning the book into a snoozefest. The documentary style interludes interviewing people about Thanos are key to giving the reader insight to Thanos's past atrocities.

Deodato's art is good not not as good as the past. He's always experimenting with his style and he's unfortunately discovered duotone shading. It's a technique 80's artists like John Bryne used back in the day to speed up shading. Why anyone would bring it back in today's world of modern computer coloring I have no idea.

Thanos has returned to reclaim what was his. The only problem, Thanos is dying.
description
He searches for a cure while others like his son Thane, conspire against him.
description
Even weakened he is still Thanos.
description

Thanos's Return is pretty mediocre. There is nothing particularly special about it any way. Thanos is back, people either want to kill him or escape him. It was cool to see the Elder of the Universe The Champion though.
description
I'd also say the artwork is very solid.

This one was so good omg, like the way it starts off with Thanos just taking back his throne from his former servant and that line "It is death by yourself that I offer you, and that is my mercy" and its chilling and pretty much just sums up the whole book and how awesome it is!

We see Thanos and maybe he is dying, and getting to see how the forces against him be conspiring like Thane, Tryco, Starfox and Nebula all coming together with a person behind the scenes pulling the string and its awesome and I freaking love the reveal of how Thane himself became so evil and its so brutally and awesome-ly done and makes sense of his motive and what his end goal and that twist omg, but Thanos trying to find a cure, vs Mentor and the fighting the Imperial guard and that was another awesome brutal one and I love that fight scene, the artist just relished themselves there and they make each page look like a billion bucks!

And then with that massive confrontation and twist omg, it just makes the story all the more better and makes sense considering their histories and all that and gives a status quo to Thanos that is very brutal but very honest and it will be interesting to read the next volume! So yeah do give it a read and it has some great moments of introspection and things finally coming to Thanos and in a way actually advances his story forward!

Finally we have a writer that can handle Thanos as well as starlin, throw in some great artwork and a wonderful story and we have a great Thanos series once again.

Some of it is a bit cliche, like his son not killing Thanos off and Thanos being asked to help etc. but i can look passed that when they write the characters properly and make it entertaining.

Well shit on a stick and call me rick (not a real expression) this was...good?

Listen. I love Jeff Lemire. As I'm creating my own comic I take a lot of inspiration from the man. He is actually writing one of my favorite comics of the entire year (Royal City) and I'll always give his stuff a chance even if it turns out I hate it (looking at you Teen Titan Earth 1). So he decided let's do a series about the Mad Titan. The big ass purple dude you've been seeing at the end credits of avengers for like 7 years now. Is it good though?

Well Thanos actually starts off with a interesting (if not odd) idea of the mad Titan going around murdering people as usual only to find out in the very first issue that he's sick. Very very sick. We talking like cancer in the lungs, brain, and bones sick. The creature of destruction goes on a mission to find a cure. While that big asshole does that a couple of other assholes including Thawn (his son) and a few other C-List characters decide to team up and take the big ass purple badass down. Will they succeed? Well that would be a spoiler. But is it good? Let's see...

Good: Thanos. I know, give me a moment, I couldn't believe it myself. The Mad Titan always came off as try-hard evil big bad final level boss at the end of the game type dude. However, he's a shit-talking, murdering machine, wild fucking asshole who has some really sick burns. In other words he's got the strength but he's also got the smack talk, oh and his skills at fighting are terrifying. I also enjoyed the ending as it sets up a ton of cool things this series could do.

Bad: The group get together with his son and their mission is kind of boring. I know it needs to be there to give us the other side of things. I mean we can't hope for Thanos to win he's a fucking asshole afterall. But their stuff seemed kind of boring in comparison.

Overall whenever Thanos is on a panel this series really shines. From the savage point of view to a creature desperate to live it's pretty great. While the other side of the story suffers Jeff Lamire writes a very very compelling Thanos. I'll be reading more of this for sure! A 3.5 out of 5.

Thanos is sick. Like...prolly gonna die if you don't find a cure sick.

His son knows this and wants to take advantage of that.

Shit goes down.

It's with this premise that Jeff Lemire tells his story of the return of the Mad Titan. And I'll tell ya what...it's pretty damn good.

Thanos is what now?? oh dear lord the impossible is coming to take place.
All the sacrifices made in favour of Mistress Death, the scheme behind these all. Like a luxury parasite, she finds her favourable host, then sits aside, quietly, till the job has been done —effortlessly and smoothly.
good series, stunning graphics, solid story and characterization, and Jeff Lemire without any doubt excels at creating an epic universe of rage and action with family affairs of the Mad Titan, Jim Starlin's mighty character. From the very beginning, we know that the story is in good hands.

Mentor, the poor father makes an appearance, carrying a huge burden of tense emotions. He allows the readers in his grieve and shame, his disappointments of his firstborn and eventually, after hundreds of years of dismalness being

Even the inevitable becomes destructible one day. So for once, the family gathers to seize the opportunity of this advantage. The father is dead, but the epicure brother, the rebellious son, the enraged daughter and the Champion of the Universe are up to a doing.
Let's see how epic it is going to end up!

Lemire's Thanos is a nicely epic story. Life, death, the existence of the entire universe? It's all here, as one would expect in a true Thanos comic.

Lemire also does a great job of collecting together cosmic entities, but not the default ones who have been so well-featured since the advent of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Here we get people like Starfox, Nebula, the Champion of the Universe, and the Shi'ar Guard, some of whom have appeared regularly and some of whom haven't been seen for some while.

This book isn't as amazing as some of Lemire's more indy work, but it's nonetheless a strong and enjoyable cosmic Marvel comic.

[Read as single issues]
No one can write Thanos quite like Jim Starlin. But Jeff Lemire is out to try, as he assembles an Ocean's Eleven (okay, more like five, but whatever) of cosmic characters with a connection to Thanos in a last ditch effort to stop him once and for all.

Enter Thane, Nebula, Starfox, the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, and Tryco Slatterus. This is a slow burn, made even slower by Lemire's labourous dialogue boxes meant to invoke the cosmic comics of old while never really getting as high concept and crazy as they did. Lemire's playing it a little safe, but the twist ending in the final issue is worth the wait and gives the series more longevity than it would first appear to have.

Industry giant Mike Deodato pencils this story, and while his current issues still plague him (too many shading lines, everything looks a little rubbery), he gets to draw the hell out of some awesome cosmic landscapes, and his Thanos is super-imposing.

Jeff Lemire usually struggles with team books. Maybe hiding it as a team book under the title of just one character has unlocked his next level of talent. Thanos is a welcome callback to comics of yore while being up to date and relevant in today's Marvel Cosmic landscape.

This is well written and superbly illustrated – not in a ‘superhero’ style but in a dark and claustrophobic style of a science-fiction horror film.

This volume sees Thanos, having escaped from Earth and the distractions of the Humans’ wars, “both Secret and Civil”, and returned to his home base, to find that he has been usurped by one of his followers. He has also discovered that he is ill, and goes on a quest to find out what has happened to cause this.

Meanwhile, his son Thane is busy recruiting some of the minor cosmic characters, Starfox, Nebula, and Tryco, to hunt down and kill Thanos.

As Thanos proceeds on his quest, wading hip-deep in bodies, as is usual for him, Thane’s back-story is revealed in flashabacks to show how he got here from where we last saw him.

The two paths eventually meet and a big shock ending (or two) ensues. There is a volume 2, just so you don’t get the wrong idea.

Thanos has returned. His presence is very much felt - especially by those looking to replace him or end him. Which is par for the course for Thanos, but this time, those threats hold more weight. The reason? ... Thanos is dying.

I've mentioned many times that Jeff Lemire is one of my favorite modern writers. But to be honest, when I saw his name on this, I had two thoughts: 1. Lemire?! awesome! I'm in! and 2. ...wait, Lemire? on Thanos??? not a small personal and emotionally engaging story but a cosmic, wide scoping epic tale of the Mad Titan?.... hm.... Because I think Lemire works best when working small. And this is definitely not small. It's about as big as it gets in the Marvel Universe, so I had some trepidations on if he could pull this off. Luckily, I feel like Lemire is on a great path to making the story not only engaging, but really entertaining as well.

There's a lot of setup in this one, with Thanos looking for a cure wherever he thinks he might find it, and a small group comprising of Nebula, Thane (son of Thanos), Death, and a couple of others conspiring to kill him. The wheels are turning on both fronts, and I'm all in to see where this goes.

Highly recommended for fans of cosmic Marvel tales.

It is really a 3 star book but the art is awesome so i pumped it up to 4. Lemire does a fine job considering its marvel, but that art is awesome. Not much is new, Thanos is killing machine and everyone wants to stop him. Lots of action, lots of Thanos punching people... which is always fun. So Thane, son of Thanos has a team that included Eros, Nebula, Tycos, and Death to finally kill Thanos but of coarse Death always on her own agenda. Anyways Thanos is sick and well its not looking good, purple stuff is leaking out his nose.... could be a cold but who knows! Cool twist at the end which involves Thane and death and a certain space force that hangs around. I will read more.

This was ok in parts. Thanos is sick and needs a cure. His son is out for revenge with a ragtag group of friends. I never got a sense of Thanos being weak or the stakes being all that serious. Good fast read with some decent art.

This was a timely read since Infinity War was just released, and the overall vibe of the comic did remind me of the movie. The art was top notch, as Mike Deodato has always been a favorite but I think he just keeps getting better.

We see Thanos at his evil self as he takes command once again of the Black Legion, however we find out he is diseased and dying. His son Thane assembles a team to take Thanos out once for all, but there's more to the plan than he admits. We also see Mistress Death return and now shes much hotter than that skeletal figure we used to see.

The Shiar Imperial Guard gets involved, we see Starfox, Mentor, Nebula, Terrax and others make an appearance as well. A very good cosmic tale that returns to the spirit of the original Infinity Gaunlet comics and other comics of that era. This is more of a beginning than an end, though, and I'm looking forward to the next volume.

After reading: I have a good rant in the makings for this one.

This is probably the longest review and rant about a book I've done in a while.

Rant about why I don't like Thanos stories, Marvel movie villains and etc. in 3… 2… 1…

SPOILERS for Infinity War, possibly Spiderman Homecoming, Ant Man 2 just… spoilers for the everything Marvel.

So let's talk first about Thanos. The main reason why I don't like Thanos is because he is a poorly written character. I'm a little rusty on my Marvel lore but from what I can remember is his backstory is that he was an outcast on his home planet, a very cliché backstory in my opinion but it's Marvel, we can make cliché backstories work. He kills his mother and then kills everyone on his home planet. Ok, so that right there is the ground work for very interesting character. Again, I'm rusty (and too lazy to look it up) so I don't have answers to why he did those things but that really isn't that important in the stories I'm going to talking about.

The first story I want to talk about is Infinity War. In the comics he does his thing with the infinity gauntlet to impress Mistress Death. OK, he's a dude that's madly in love with Death. Makes sense that, with the power to do so, he would go on a killing spree. In the movies, he's given a very half-assed reason: population control. REALLY? He has the power of a god (and it's mentioned that he is supposedly very intelligent) and his solution to help starving planets everywhere is to use his powers to just kill half of everyone everywhere?

I got some questions. 1: Why didn't he just make people from populated planets move to new planets? He had the power to do so. 2: Why didn't he end world hunger by making food plentiful? He had the power to do so. 3: Why did he have to fight everyone after getting the stone that changes reality? He could have just fooled everyone to give him the stones. He had the power to do so.

I'm just a bitter girl with some questions, OK?

Then the movie tries to make Thanos a very sympathetic character by making him sacrifice something he loves, Gamora. But it's said that he "loved" all his "children" but had no problem torturing them, evident with Captain Nebula in that one scene where she's floating in the air dismantled and in obvious pain.

So most of the movie is just the Avengers being told how badass Thanos is, fighting off Thanos' followers, and trying to stop Thanos from getting the Infinity Stones. But each time they are basically handed to him, with the exception of Doctor Strange who literally handed Thanos his stone. (he probably had his reasons for doing so but honestly by that point in the movie, I could have cared less)

Many times the characters make some of the dumbest decisions that cause the plot to move forward, either by having Thanos or his minions either escape or get the Infinity Stones. The only one making sound decisions was Thor because he was nowhere near the action for a large part of the movie. "Tension-free nonsense." (A quote from Sam Quixote's review) That's all his stories are, there's no tension because you know he's going to win. That's what I'm talking about when it comes to writing. Most of the characters are turned into lesser versions of themselves or made completely useless. (I'm lookin' at you Vision *grumbles in a corner*) And we all know how it ends so to save myself from being triggered any further, I'll just skip ahead to this volumes story line.

So in this story, Thanos is out here doing his thing, you know, killing people after he destroyed half of everything in existence, as one does, to reclaim his throne on a moon full of assassins and slave traders, and etc. His son, Thane (such an original name for the son of Thanos, I know), gathers a team to help him kill his father. This group consist of Captain Nebula, Starfox, and this red haired beast of a guy whose name I didn't really care to remember. The plot goes back and forth between what Thanos is doing, the red haired dude going out to grab Nebula and Starfox and Thane talking with Mistress Death. (By the way she's dressed in this all black bikini and looks like she's going to some gothic pool party. I'm guessing this is just how Thane sees Death, or maybe it's just fanservice but still it looks weird and threw me off).

We find out Thanos is dying and he goes to his dad to help find out what wrong with him (it's revealed to be some mysterious cancer that no one can treat but he still manages to kick everyone's ass, yet another cliché). Now at first the Mentor refuses to help him because, ya know, he kinda killed everyone on their home planet, and I was thinking: how is Thanos going to convince his dad to help figure out what's wrong with him? He already killed everything he loved, what could he possibly do to him? Thanos threatens to kill every scientist that his dad is working with. Again, he's already killed his loved ones, surely the Mentor isn't going to care if he kills some strangers, right? Right?!

It is the most half-assed, cliched threat I have ever…

I don't know if I'm getting my point across well, but in short: Thanos has the backstory and power to become a Darth Vader and Hulk 2.0 in my eyes but he's always written to be a cliché "badass" killing machine with a "heart" and nothing else. The whole volume we are told he's a death machine over and over by the narrator and in interviews of people who knew Thanos before he bombed his home planet. That's another thing about this comic that irked me: the lack of sedulity. Here's some advice that all readers have been shouting at authors everywhere for as long as I can remember: SHOW DON'T TELL. I know this is aimed at kids but from context alone I'm sure everyone can figure out that Thanos is "badass". But no, we must be remind by everyone in every scene how awesome he is.

Meanwhile, Thane gets the group together and explains how they plan to kill his dad and we get flashbacks to how he met the red haired dude and Mistress Death. I found this pretty interesting but everything else about him was just another marvel villain character with dad issues and a warped sense of importance. (Looking at you villain from Black Panther whose name I also am too lazy to look up)

Marvel villains in the movies have always been a weak point for me. They either have cliché backstories, anticlimactic fight scenes, or their character personalities aren't fleshed out. Spiderman's villain in homecoming had an anticlimactic boss fight, Ant Man 2's had a cliché backstory and underdeveloped personality (though her powers were so fucking cool), Ultron in Avengers Age of Ultron had a very weak motivation for everything he did in that movie and I could go on but this review is long enough as it is.

I have volume 2 next to me and I'm going to read it because I did enjoy some parts of this and Thanos going around trying to be a "god" but instead being in between a Darth Vader and Hulk 2.0 was fun, at times, to read.

I'm undecided if I will waste my money or time on the next Marvel movie, definitely undecided if I even want to look at Avengers 4, but eh, we'll see.

If you've made it this far into my review congrats, you've just read the rant of a 19 year old nerd.

Happy reading, fellow comic book fans!

Časem snad načtu a ocením víc.

Well I must say I am surprised. I was not expecting much but, instead, got a very good story and excellent art.

Thanos, thought dead, has returned. Yet, all is not well and Thanos is dying. As Thanos battles to regain his lost holdings, he must also find a way to save his own life. This mission will lead him into conflict with the Shi'ar Imperial Guard.

Meanwhile, Thanos' son, Thane (Thanos has a son?), seeks the approval of Mistress Death who has turned against Thanos. He recruits Nebula and The Champion to help him, but he isn't telling them everything and he has an ulterior motive.

An interesting, dark, and entertaining story. Mike Deodato's art is really good and that makes this a great comic. I shall be getting the second volume soon as this seems like a good series.

Collects Thanos (2016) issues #1-6

I'm torn on what to give this...maybe 4 stars or maybe 5 stars. The artwork was really good, and the story continued to get better and better. I believe that reading "Thanos Rising" was helpful for my enjoyment of this book, but it isn't required reading. There is a fun cast of characters in this book, and I'm excited to read on in the series.

What can I say, I enjoyed this first volume by Jeff Lemire. Granted he is one of my favourite writers in the medium, I just enjoyed the storyline and fun Lemire has here. I've never been a giant Marvel fan, but every now and again I'm lured back to find a fun book like this one. I was a little sceptical that this was going to be underwhelming and another excuse for me to throw Marvel in the corner, but it has actually gone the other way.

Why the 5?

Pure enjoyment and exactly why I love the art form medium. Not full of exposition and you get a fast and very eventful storyline. Lemire doesn't drop a beat throughout the story and I was engaged from beginning to end. Reviews have this well over mid way and rightly so. Thanos is an interesting character that in my opinion lost out with Avengers Endgame, they put him in the corner after he was the key success to Infinity War. Strong villain and one of the best Marvel characters.

Great Thanos comic! I’m going through a bunch of them at the moment to explore and deep dive a bit more into the character. With Jeff Lemire as a writer, I knew it was going to be good! Great story, good cast of characters as well, powerful one and not the most frequently seen group either so that make it a bit more original! I love it!

This was fine. A really fast, entertaining and easy read, but light on real stakes and it suffers for it. No way I believed Thanos would succumb to his mystery disease. And no way a bunch of Marvel D-listers were going to get the job done first.

But I enjoy Jeff Lemire’s writing, and Mike Deodato and Frank Martin killed it in the art department. Overall, if you have Avengers Infinity War fever, you could do a lot worse than this.

Falou? Valeu!

A miniseries focusing on Thanos and his cosmic villainy? Written by the great Jeff Lemire and illustrated by the epic Mike Deodato?

The writing my Lemire is very solid, and the art by Deodato is typically excellent. Somehow, although this book is consistently very good, it never quite makes it to the next level. I'm not sure exactly what is lacking, the writing is very true-to-character and I have no complaints about the illustration or coloring, but somehow it never quite comes together. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistically high due to the creative team. Still, quite a good book and a very entertaining read.

Recommended.
